What is the meaning of "来帰する" in this sentence: "三鎮陥落．広嗣軍惨敗により、豊前国の郡司層は兵を率い、続々と政府軍に来帰する。"? bamse (talk) 09:48, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

I think it's "surrender". This page says "大野東人25日付報告、豊前国の大領・少領らの来帰が相次ぐ。" and the ja article says "9月25日、豊前国の諸郡司が500騎、80人、70人と率いて官軍に投降してきた。". Using a zh to ja machine translator, 来帰 was translated as 帰順する/surrender. But it looks like 来帰 sometime means "naturalize" or literally "go/visit somewhere and return" or "come and go". Hi, I'm using File:Fujiwaranomichinaga.jpg in Murasaki Shikibu and realized I haven't a clue about the licensing on the file. Does the Japanese text add any useful information? Thanks. Truthkeeper (talk) 22:27, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

I am afraid the Japanese text only says "Fujiwara no Michinaga" so is not that useful. Unfortunately there is no source given in the image description. The uploader has only been active for a short while 5 years ago so asking him/her is likely not going to help. I am not an expert on licensing, but the license of the file looks strange unless the copyright holder (the artist?) put it in PD. Based on the style of the painting, I would suspect it to be from the Edo period which would allow for a PD-Art license. However I am not confident enough to upload it under that license based on a guess. bamse (talk) 22:51, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Can't find that image from the webcast either. If you don't mind using an image that is similar in style to those that are already in the article, you could take this image of Michinaga which is a crop from a larger image (see for instance here. That image is from the National Treasure Murasaki Shikibu Diary Ekotoba, Kamakura period (13th century); (the part of the scroll that is located at Fujita Art Museum, not the one from Gotoh Museum). bamse (talk) 17:12, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

The currently blocked anonymous 2.224.12.20 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) has a history of problematic edits to articles about Germany, in which he/she repeatedly added unsourced information about administrative subdivisions that may become effective in the (distant) future, but doesn't reflect the current situation. Hard to say from the romaji only. I was searching for a kanji transcription (which does not need to exist) or a prose explanation of the name, but without success. That being said, "take" is most likely mushroom and "ke" could be "hair" (referring to the hair on the stem). Sorry for not being of much help. bamse (talk) 13:31, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

It might be 毛縄茸 as "funalis" means "rope-like". 毛 is hair and 縄 is rope. So it could be "hairy rope" or "fuzzy rope". Oda Mari (talk) 15:23, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

I'd like to see the following parameters in {{Infobox Shinto shrine}}.

• Coordinates
• Shrine rank: ja:社格
• Architecture: architectural sytle of the main building (honden)
• Alternative names
• Pilgrimage: ja:札所
• Festivals: ja:例祭
• Rituals: ja:神事

Over on the Kono Chikyū no Heiwa o Honki de Negatterun da yo!/Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai! article (a single by Morning Musume), the song title "Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai!" was translated as "I want to go shopping with him!". I have commented this out in the article, as I have my doubts about whether this is an accurate translation. Apart from the fact that "kare" is more likely to mean "boyfriend" here, I have not heard of "omise ga shitai" being used to mean "go shopping", and without knowing exactly what the song is about, I would have thought that it meant "I want to start/run a shop with my boyfriend". Can any native Japanese or other knowledgeable editor confirm/check this, and possibly comment on the article's Talk page. Thanks. --DAJF (talk) 01:20, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Can someone please have a look over the recently created article Maidashi (a district in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka)? It was written by a Japanese native, and appears to have been mostly machine-translated from the equivalent Japanese Wikipedia article. I had a go at cleaning up the English and removing some of the unrelated stuff myself, but the author still appears bitter about my having sent an earlier article of his to AfD and simply reverted my changes outright as "destructive". This article definitely shows potential for improvement and expansion, but it needs a native English speaker to improve the level of the writing and bring it up to a basic standard. I am slightly bewildered for DAJF's claim. The reason comes from the fact as follows. His series act [1] consists of three elements.
① correction of the grammatical errors
② large removal
③ treating for using of pic.
For mixed three element, I cannot hide my embarrassment, for these reason I reversed it. I agreed to ① but for ② and ③ asked him discussion of community.
Mr. Leutha, he is a reliable writer, corrects the grammatical errors now, and I think people of sound judgment will develop an appropriate response.--Hot cake syrup (talk) 09:34, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

I can't really identify the text all that well, so could anyone vouch for the quality of the transcription at the blog? (I'm assuming there is quite a bit of "muto" or however its spelled...) The transcription seems to match, but turning that into English is not straightforward: the writing is in historical kana and full of obscure slang. The blog entry above explains some of the terminology though. Jpatokal (talk) 23:52, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Another thing to consider: this picture will never be allowed on the front page as a picture of the day due to the content. Are there other featured pictures with similar content? • There are some nudes and scatological images, but the scatologicals aren't for the main page. Nothing overtly sexual, although the current main image at Hentai could probably get FP status. It would have to be whitelisted for WP:FPC first though. It should be noted that FP status is not exclusively for MP exposure. Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:25, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

• Not sure about the historical value, but it is probably the best known shunga image. As for the Extermination of Evil, the images don't have an official title (as given by the artist), so titles assigned will be descriptive. The emuseum website, Agency for Cultural Affairs and possibly others use the titles which are already in your article, so not sure the following is of any use to you: (i) Tenkeisei (天刑星, lit. "star of divine punishment"), (ii) Sendan Kendatsuba (栴檀乾闥婆, name of one of the protectors of Buddhism), (iii) Shinchū (神虫, lit. "divine insect"), (iv) Shōki (鍾馗, name of an (original Chinese) deities said to prevent plagues and ward off evil), (v) Bishamonten (毘沙門天, name of a guardian god). bamse (talk) 13:55, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Broadly speaking they seem disruptive, eg. this has lost a lot of the information in this. The user has apparently done this before and has been blocked for it [4], so wholesale reverts seem in order. Jpatokal (talk) 22:43, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Well, there were some examples before, and the consensus at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive718#Questionable edits to kana articles seems to be that the former examples were good, and the ones that the IP added were unhelpful. Can anyone with a better handle of Japanese than me tackle a translation of a quote? I've got the gist of it, but I'm planning on using the quote in an article and I'd like to have it be a little more precise. Here is the quote: 「オレの長い野球生活でもこんな猛打は初めてだ。諸君知っているかい？アメリカでは今日みたいなにヒットの種類を全部打つと“サイクルヒット”というのさ。こんなことは滅多にできないんだ。ヨネダも２０００奪三振だって？いいことばかりだな今日は。とてもハッピーな気分だ」。 And the source if you need some context. User:Tenmei has contributed to WP:Japan articles enormously. However Tenmei is now discussed to be banned for one year. Please see Wikipedia talk:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Senkaku Islands/Proposed decision#Concerns. Although Tenmei is some problem in editing style in contentious articles, Tenmei should not be banned without any restrictions. I don't think that lobbying in relation to ArbCom cases is a very good idea. From having been on the receiving end of Tenmei's conduct a couple of years ago, I think that a ban is long overdue. Nick-D (talk) 10:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
