Someone suggested that we have a page on this. There's a japanese wiki page: ja:SENDAI光のページェント and several photos of it on wiki commons. Seems to be a tourist attraction mentioned on at least some English language travel sites. The article "Kaiju" (which incidentally can't decide if it's about "kaijū" or about "kaiju") has recently turned into a battlefield among (very young?) IPs and new editors, primarily over whether "Clifford the Big Red Dog" and "Grape Ape" should be counted. Should they? I don't know; perhaps somebody here does. If so, do go over there and, displaying your superior knowledge (from explicitly specified reliable sources, of course), shoo the silly people away.

Incidentally, what to me is the most bizarre aspect of the article is the sizable section on "In popular culture". Are kaijū (as understood in the article) ever not in popular culture? If this means "Trivial appearances elsewhere" (as it seems to), why can't it be so titled? -- Hoary (talk) 02:58, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a problem with using both. The article itself is at "Kaiju", and the lead uses "Kaijū". If anything, the lead should remain as is and all other instances in the article (outside of appropriate spots in the infobox) should be changed to "kaiju". I've tried to standardize the orthography, or anyway to systematize it: "kaijū" (macron, italics) when Japanese terminology is discussed; "kaiju" (neither) elsewhere. Never capitalized (except of course in contexts where any word, e.g. "monster", would be capitalized). I have little experience editing this kind of subject and little knowledge of the subject, and may have failed to notice some occurrences and/or made some goofs; please, 日本穣 (or anyone), feel free to amend. ¶ As kaijū is a Japanese word and "kaiju" is an English one -- and, unlike Gojira/Godzilla, neither is a name -- it seems most unlikely that each has a hard and fast definition. That simply isn't how language works. Instead, they'll have core meanings, of course allowing for Gojira/Godzilla as a referent, and also peripheral/sporadic/disputed uses. It's quite likely that some knowledgable (even academic) sources will explicitly define the term to include this or that (eg King Kong) and others will explicitly define it not to do so. If this is indeed so, then I think it would be helpful if the article briefly acknowledged this. I'm sure that others here would be a lot better qualified to tackle this than I am. In view of the problems I've pointed out at Talk:Foreign policy of the administration of Shinzō Abe, I believe that this should be moved back to draft space. For two assertions in surprisingly dramatic/grandiose language, the accompanying "references" fail even to back up a weaker, non-melodramatic version. If this new en:WP article is, as claimed, a translation from an article in es:WP, then either it's a mistranslation or the original is not reliable. I don't see it as my job to check the veracity of all the appeals to English-language sources; it's primarily the responsibility of the person who creates the draft -- and this hasn't been done, or anyway hasn't been done adequately. I received the second opinion (from Mathglot). I have moved the article back to Draft:Foreign policy of the administration of Shinzō Abe. This needs a very thorough revision, or more likely deletion and a restart from scratch. The draft was and remains a translation of es:Política externa del gobierno de Shinzō Abe (mostly dependent, either actually or just fictionally, on English-language sources). This is as problematic as its English-language derivative. Unfortunately I am ignorant of Spanish, but Mathglot has brought up issues about the article at es:Discusión:Política externa del gobierno de Shinzō Abe#Información discutida.
