Would some others mind taking a look at this article and assessing it for WP:PUFF, WP:ALLCAPS and WP:PROMOTION among other things? I came across the article via the talk page of Materialscientist (this post) and User talk:MKAMisawa#May 2020. Elly's dad does have a Japanese Wikipedia article written about him and may be notable for an English Wikipedia article in his own right so mentioning seem reasonable, but it also seems reasonable to mention Elly's mom by name as well if a source can be found in support. I did some minor cleaning up, but there still may be an excessive amount of detail and a promotional tone that need addressing. There are also some table syntax things that need cleaning up, but those are fairly minor. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:44, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion for Inrō

Please share your thoughts at Talk:Inrō#Requested_move_8_May_2020. Opencooper (talk) 08:53, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone add the Japanese spelling for Koso (drink) and if possible link the article to the Japanese equivalent?

Info in title, thanks! MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:32, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Done, though this article needs a lot more work (it looks like it's a machine translated version of the Japanese article, which isn't a quality piece of research to start off with). --Prosperosity (talk) 04:16, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Manzanar featured article review

I have nominated Manzanar for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:14, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The external links on the Manzanar article are being discussed. There are currently 18 of them, which is excessive. Please come participate in the discussion at Talk:Manzanar#External links. Thanks! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 04:27, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Souces for Japanese crafts

Hello, I'm translating japanese crafts on itwiki, but the section History needs sources. Can someone help me finding some? Thank you!--ValeJappo (talk) 07:05, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help with sources

I'm in the process of drafting an article for Fumio Tajima, the Japanese population geneticist. While there's plenty of English sources discussing his work, there's not many I can find that provide biographical details. I suspect such sources would exist in Japanese (on University websites, or even news profiles). I would really appreciate any assistance with finding such. Anyone who is willing to help find such is welcome to collaborate on a DYK nomination, too. Best, Vanamonde (Talk) 02:43, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I had a quick look and found the following:
His name is 田嶋文生 (1)
He retired from Tokyo University at the end of March 2017, and gave a farewell lecture on the 4th March 2
His archived biography page from the university website is very plain, with no biographical details (3)
I can't find much about any activity following that date
I dived into the internet archive of the university's website, but as you go further back there is no bio page for professors at all. Sorry I couldn't be more help. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 09:50, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I found this: Genetic Society of Japan, page 9, a bio from high school to professor of UT.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 10:50, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Athomeinkobe and Phoenix7777: Many thanks. The GSJ source was particularly useful; the retirement date is nice to have, too. Vanamonde (Talk) 16:13, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On the italicization of foreign-language song titles

A problem came up today while I was editing Squid Girl. It was my incorrect understanding that MOS:FOREIGNITALIC always trumps MOS:NOITALIC, but actually the reverse is true; song titles are not to be italicized. Juhachi correctly reverted me. However, this raises an issue; because my edit was not really about the italic, it was about making sure that Japanese rōmaji gets marked with |lang=ja-Latn, as MOS:ACCESS and MOS:OTHERLANG dictate. Screen readers require ja-Latn to recognize that it's a Japanese term. Therefore, we now have a dilemma. My proposed solution is simple:

 • Add a |italic=no to Nihongo3, so we don't need to resort to noitalic, which Juhachi thinks is ugly. (I agree.)
 • Make it clear that it is wrong to put rōmaji where English should go in Nihongo. Template:Nihongo/doc is already clear on this issue.

Some preliminary discussion has already happened at User_talk:Juhachi#On_the_italicization_of_foreign-language_song_titles_and_Squid_Girl. I'd remind that just because many articles are sticking rōmaji where English is supposed to go in Nihongo, that doesn't make it right; that's just WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. If many articles need to change to correctly work with screen readers, that's a perfectly fine requirement, as MOS:ACCESS is a very important goal of the project.

I'd also like to loop in Graham87, who I consider to be a friend ever since he helped me with integrating File:Dust Bowl map.svg into Dust Bowl. I'm sure he has something interesting to say about the necessity of lang tags, even for rōmaji. Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) 22:28, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Psiĥedelisto: Oh yes, I remember you! I'm actually not personally a fan of language switching with screen readers (I've turned it off myself. In this case, I don't think "Shinryaku no Susume" should really be in lang tags, otherwise a screen reader user would hear the text spoken in Japanese twice, once in romaji and the second time in kana/kanji. It's actually a bit more difficult to get decent speech synthesisers in Japanese to work with screen readers than it is for most other major languages if you're an English speaker (I don't know exactly why that is, but it took me a while to find one once), so I don't think many screen reader users would have Japanese synths installed unless they were particularly interested in the language. Graham87 03:33, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Graham87: Interesting take. What should we do then? It seems worse to me to hear it pronounced horribly wrongly once then correct the second time than to hear it twice. But that's why I mentioned you—I hadn't even considered that screen readers might attempt to read the kanji, I figured they'd just skip it, so only reading first the rōmaji, then the English. Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) 03:38, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Psiĥedelisto: I think just leave it as it is. Screen reader users are very much used to hearing speech synths butcher pronunciation of foreign words. With non-Japanese synths, The kanji, like most non-Latin characters, will either be read as a question mark or not at all ... some synths will however try to read them with varying results. Graham87 04:49, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, if that's what you think, I won't go make an WP:ER to Module:Lang/utilities. I'll leave this open for a bit longer to collect opinions, but I'm satisfied with that answer. Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) 05:13, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
