Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Eastmain, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Eastmain,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Eastmain,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Regarding Declined status of Endeavor Business Media entry

Hello, I wanted to respond to your comment that the "deals reported on by reliable sources are significantly more than "run-of-the-mill" events" - can you clarify what you mean? The acquisitions included in this entry explain how the company was built and includes links to Wikipedia pages for the companies they were purchased from - PennWell, Informa, etc. Additionally, all of these citations were from verifiable news sources-Folio Magazine, Nashville Post, etc.

And yes, the Google Streetview image you noted is correct - 331 54th Ave N., Nashville, TN 37209, is a commercial space that looks like a house. The reason this is the company headquarters is because this is the building the executive leadership leased when they started the company with a much smaller staff. Endeavor Business Media now has offices in multiple locations throughout the country. The company was in the process of remodeling several of these offices before Covid put a pause on these plans.

Regarding your request for more reference, there is more information on the company website but I was previously discouraged from including links to the actual company website. If you have any advice on how I can improve this, please let me know. Thank you for your help! Abigail Christine (talk) 23:22, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Citation bot

Hi Eastmain

I noticed that recent edits by Citation bot have included AFC categories suggest by you. Those for recent AFCs make some sense to me, because those are drafts which are due for scrutiny, and the bot may help with that. But the latest batch of bot edits includes all of Category:AfC submissions by date/04 February 2021, suggested by you.

Unfortunately, the bot has limited capacity, so en.wp is best served by directing it towards wherever it has maximum benefit. There are a few job series being fed to it which concentrate articles identified as having issues which the bot can fix, where it has a high success rate. Jobs which don't improve the 'pedia displace or delay the jobs which do.

So it seems to me that processing all of Category:AfC submissions by date/04 February 2021 is not a great use of the bot. Those drafts are now over 8 months old, and after that long they will probably have a very low rate of being accepted. I did a quick check using https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=19912694, which shows that 81 of the 84 draft-space pages in that category have already been declined. Wouldn't it be better to let the bot work on live articles, rather than old declined drafts? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:18, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @BrownHairedGirl: You're probably right, but some of the February 4 articles which were declined are salvageable. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 20:21, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Eastmain: Thaks for the prompt reply.
Yes some will be salvageable, but the proportion which will actually be salvaged is going to be very low. So instead of having of the bot process them all, wouldn't it be better for anyone who tries to salvage one of those drafts to just feed that individual article to the bot?
If we assume that the 85 pages in the Feb 4 cat is about average, that means that in Jan-June 2021 there are about 14,000 stale drafts. Feeding them all to the bot would occupy it for about two days if it was doing nothing else.
I am not persuaded that having the bot process all new AFC submissions is a great idea, since a significant proportion of them will never get to article space. But stale drafts seems to me to give a very low return on the bot's time. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:36, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Eastmain

I see that the latest bot contribs include the bot working its way through the 176 drafts in Category:AfC submissions by date/23 August 2021. But a quick Petscan check shows that 132 of those AfC submissions have already been declined. As above, that seems pointless.

I don't think the bot should be fed any batches of drafts; better for a reviewer to do them individually if that helps them. But if you are going to set the bot to work on batches of drafts, please can you at least exclude those which have already been declined? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 09:54, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PS this bot edit[1] shows that you also ran the bot over the same Category:AfC submissions by date/23 August 2021 only three days ago, on 23 August.
Over 70% of published articles have never been touched by the bot. It makes no sense to me to divert it away from published articles into drafts, let alone to a second pass on mostly-declined drafts. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:02, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And again. This set of bot edits shows a webform batch of 23 pages submitted by you. Only 7 of the 23 pages were edited by the bot, and 5 of those are declined submissions: [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:21, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To my knowledge people contribute to Wikipedia of the stuff they know

Grazmach Tameru Lemma is not a public figure so Wikipedia users except me don't know him. The article is written from family knowledge I didn't read articles or newspapers which talked about him and plus there are none. So I write through family links. And because of this no other Wikipeidan user can edit it because they don't have the knowledge first of all to contribute to the article. I wish you understand common sense. And because i told you the truth don't block or attack me. Thanks.

Thanks for adding more sources
