Welcome to the 2024 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2024 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close on 31 January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), and Frostly (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! Draft: American Junior Red Cross

Okay, I added a Ref. showing notability (Re: 22 million). Also stretched out the article a little to be more all-encompassing. I mean, to give a more complete picture of the organization. It's far more notable than an athlete appearing in one game in the pros, IMO. Thanks for hopefully putting it through. However, either way, I really didn't want to spend much time on this. I just wanted to start this worthy article. It was once a major branch of the Red Cross. JimPercy (talk) 16:26, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I added some more to give it completeness. JimPercy (talk) 13:12, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. I want to give a personal thank you to you for your motivation towards improving articles' references. As you have well surpassed 750 articles cited, I would like to award you the level 10 badge early. Perhaps, a quote from one of our writers who has recently passed away would be the most appropriate here for the monumental work – citing all articles on Wikipedia – that we are dealing with. The only way Completion can and will be reached is through a Herculean amount of work. Completion will also require Completionists to be bold, but civil and patient, and to some extent charismatic. This is a collaborative project! It shall also require Completionists to be discerning and travel to many places to acquire what the Encyclopedia needs. But most of all, it must be repeated, it shall require us to work. As is said of the Swabians, "Schaffe, schaffe Häusle baue" — Let's work and work, and build a house.

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Draftifying articles

I see that you have just removed two of my recently created rugby union articles into draftspace on grounds of lack of references. The Royal Bassett article has now been improved and expanded, and the number of references has been increased from two to eight, and none are primary references from their website. Therefore, can you please reinstate it back to mainspace. I shall now look to do the same with Hammersmith and Fulham and I hope you won't relegate any more of my articles from Wikipedia.Rillington (talk) 00:03, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @Rillington: Royal Wootton Bassett is the club in question, thus sources 1 and 2 cannot be used to establish notability. The Rugby Football Union is directly associated with the club, thus sources 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 cannot be used to establish notability. I am sure that Source 3 has plenty of in-depth coverage of the club, but I am unable to access the text. JTtheOG (talk) 00:15, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The RFU is not associated, even indirectly, with any club - it's the sport's governing body. Therefore its website is independent of the subject.Rillington (talk) 00:25, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rillington: It is generally agreed upon that sports governing bodies are not independent of the teams or athletes that compete under their jurisdiction. JTtheOG (talk) 00:55, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is the first I've heard of this and I've been producing articles on English rugby union clubs for a decade. Plus it is also generally agreed that any club which has played at tier 5 of the English rugby league system is seen as notable. RWB played at this level for three seasons and H&F currently play at this level.Rillington (talk) 11:52, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Draft:Royal Wootton Bassett RFC has multiple primary and secondary references, including both the RFU pages as well as Rothman's Rugby Union Yearbook. These are the gold standard for rugby union and are notable sources. Tier 5 clubs play in the 'National Leagues' so this should also be considered when it comes to notability. Recommend keeping pages with note on adding future sources to help with reinforcing validaty as opposed to removing pages. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 16:27, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey. As someone who also has also been creating sports articles for over a decade, it somewhat troubling that you would think this way. The RFU is simply not an independent source. At the time of draftification, the article had two sources: a link to the club's contacts page and a dead link to a results page from 8 years ago posted by the RFU. I hope we can all agree that this is nowhere near enough sources to meet notability guidelines, no matter which tier they are currently in, and it would be irresponsible of me to mark it as patrolled. Instead of deleting a page not ready for the mainspace, I draftified it to give you (or others) enough time to come up with better sourcing and re-submit it. I'm AGF that the Rothman's Yearbook has adequate in-depth coverage of the subject, but once again, this was not present in the originally published version of the article. Deletion rationales

Hello, JTtheOG,

I'd like to request that on any future articles you nominate for PRODs or AFDs, that you do not mention that the article was created by Lugnuts. The identify of the editor who created an article, unless they are a sockpuppet, is really irrelevant to whether or not we should keep or delete an article. Basically, I think you can make a strong argument for deletion without drawing attention to a fellow editor.

There are many of us who worked with Lugnuts before he was blocked and while his editing was problematic, it just seems a bit mean-spirited to use his name as shorthand for an article that should be deleted. I respect the work that you do and I'm asking for this favor as a fellow editor, not an administrator who deletes a lot of PRODs and closes a lot of AFDs. For what it's worth, I think it might be appropriate to mention his participation while you are responding to other editors in AFD comments but just not in your deletion rationale, as the primary reason for an article's deletion. Thank you for considering this request. Liz Read! Talk! 01:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I certainly meant no ill will towards them and was simply attempting to provide context using a phrase I had seen others use in the past. I suppose I had not fully considered the implications of invoking their username. JTtheOG (talk) 01:33, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Símun Sólheim

Why have you moved my article about a footballer into draft, refering to lack of cources. In fact there are a lot of sources, even uefa.com, wich is the most trustworthy of all sources regarding footballers. You have obviously done this by routine, and not checked the vaildy of the sources in the article. RonTho (talk) 03:37, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @RonTho: This was a deliberate draftification. In order to better establish notability of this footballer, you must demonstrate that there is significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Source 1 (worldfootball.net) is a database and is thus not significant coverage of the subject. Source 2 (in.fo) is a short transactional announcement and is thus not significant coverage of the subject. Source 3 (B36) is his employer and is thus not independent of the subject. I am unable to access Source 4 (faroesoccer.com), but judging by the URL it seems to be a match report, and is thus not significant coverage of the subject. I draftified your article instead of nominating for deletion in order to allow you the time to present sources that establish notability. Hope this helps and happy editing. JTtheOG (talk) 20:59, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You did not mention the most reliable source - uefa.com Is that not sufficient enough, regarding footballers? And what about soccerway.com?
I sincerely ask you to do a proper work, instead of what you are preforming here. RonTho (talk) 22:06, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RonTho: You are correct. This is not sufficient enough because stats databases do not contribute towards notability, as I mentioned in my previous comment. JTtheOG (talk) 22:19, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hans Werner Sokop

Hi JTtheOG,

I've seen that you have tagged my article about Hans Werner Sokop (if this is not the case, please accept my apologies).

In the meantime, I've added a section with external links of libraries etc. that prove the literary production of Hans Werner Sokop.

Is there anything else that is necessary to prove that the content is correct and valuable?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello JTtheOG,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Reminders:

  • You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
  • Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

A few days ago, I stumbled a think that I don't fully understand and I would appreciate your opinion. I have created some Wikipedia pages and all of them have received "reviewed" status. One didn't – Kurk Lietuvai. Ironically, it's the one that I happened to put the most effort in and wanted to do as good as I could. Even much newer pages that I created have already been reviewed, e.g. Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve. How come that my articles get reviewed, but one is "stuck" and doesn't? What difference on Wikipedia does it make if an article has been reviewed?

Best regards,

Hey there. I wouldn't exactly be able to tell you, because it shows up as reviewed for me. Good work, though. JTtheOG (talk) 16:27, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 April newsletter

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. SusuGeo seems to have copy-pasted back all/some of the pages you moved to draft. -- Aunva6talk - contribs 14:48, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly recommend you utilize the Articles for creation process to create new articles. they generally give decent feedback for you to improve the article prior to it 'going live' in article space. and you especially cannot just copy the content back into the article. -- Aunva6talk - contribs 15:13, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the helpful feedback SusuGeo (talk) 15:36, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted

Hello, JTtheOG. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! Hey man im josh (talk) 12:53, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
