Howdy, thanks for your welcome message. Is it just me, or does it seem that there are a lot of unrelated politics unnecessarily involved with authoring an article for this crowd-sourced encyclopedia? Just a hunch, but both users involved with deletion had 'red' in their usernames. Hi Phoebe, I'm wondering if WP or WMF has ever done any outreach to the Center for Research Libraries, and you seemed the one who would know. It seems like an obvious path to pursue for improving wp:RX access to obscure sources, if they're prepared to entertain it. No doubt we can go through individual member libraries, but that doesn't really seem fair to the WP editors at those member institutions and might in some cases violate their terms of service. the short answer is I don't think so (or I don't know of anything, anyway); the long answer is I think maybe it would be something CRL would entertain, maybe not. They tend to enter very complicated agreements with the member libraries (which I don't fully understand) for consortial deals and access to their collections, and it's far from free. Seems plausible. Perhaps the W-I-R at the OCLC or the LoC could offer some insights. As I understand it they are major participant institutions in CRL. The recent discussions around possible loss of WebCite on-demand archiving of ephemeral web based sources might also play into it. As Phoebe says, the CRL is not a library in the ordinary sense, but an interlibrary center for large bodies of print and microfilm material. It only works as a resource for individual libraries (almost all significant college and university libraries are members) with only two exceptions: It has a reading room in Chicago open to researchers under the normal special restrictions of a rare book facility, and it will make photocopies of items in its collection for anyone at a minimum cost of $175 for up to 50 pages. It would not seem to make any sense for us to interface with it directly, even were they prepared to enter in such an arrangement. DGG ( talk ) 00:45, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

   thank You for making the technical edits on the list of archaeologists.  How-ever, I don't agree with Your eliminating the ref. to the Srpskohrvatski Wikipedia  article about Cheman.  I know Your action follows general Wik policy, but here we are dealing with a list which includes people who can be prominent in material not in English.  By having a cross-Wik ref, we "protect" the name from being removed by some-one saying the person doesn't belong on the list 'because s/he has no individual Wikipedia page.'  To me, on a list a cross-Wik  ref to an entry (in this case, an archaeologist) is like  double-bracketing:  simply a way of saying that the person merits entry and on essentially the same basis. Hi! Yes! Let's do it. I suppose what I'm imagining is a non-project specific portal for professional libraries & librarians who would like to get involved in Wikimedia, to provide a one-shop-stop as it were. I think that means working on Outreach (or maybe meta, but there's already a start on outreach), even though the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Libraries pages are maybe more complete here? I don't think there is a logical progression of pages, no. I think we just need to pick a place and start collecting resources.

The things I'd like to see are:

• Library-related presentations
• handouts that could be used for teaching /information literacy etc
• event ideas and reports
• links to relevant projects on commons, wp, wikisource, etc
• best practices, example projects
• ??

Hey Phoebe - sorry for being late with getting to this (reorganization of library pages). I've looked at pages on Outreach and WP. How do you want to organize them? In a sense, I think most of the "how-to" pages belong on Outreach.wikimedia.org. But I'm uneasy with that because I don't think that wiki is as prominent as regular WP, and I have my doubts as to weather the "curious" will follow the trail to outreach (or will even realize that it's a separate domain). @Kosboot: hi! I think outreach makes sense as a place to organize both how-to pages and listings of events/projects from around the world -- not just the English Wikipedia. So my first task is going to be collect a list of projects that have been done already, on outreach. Speaking as a person/not my agency, I'd love to help out - there's a lot of interest in Wikipedia from Michigan libraries of all kinds, public and University. Thank you for your kind words on my wall when you noticed that I have been inspired by your book about Wikipedia. As you wrote there, I was finishing up sandbox updates for the IQ classification article. I have submitted that to the current nominations on DYK, but so far no one has checked the hook fact there, which I discovered while expanding the article. It occurs to me that since you are a librarian, you can help me better understand how most Wikipedians use sources. I'm pretty big on using print sources and writing pathfinders to reliable sources, but I get the impression that I still need more cultural guidance on how to fit in with other Wikipedians who have other work styles. I am a reference librarian at Grace A. Dow Memorial Library and have been editing the library's Wikipedia page. I have now read the sections on conflict of interest, and wondering where I should put a conflict of interest statement? On the article's talk page? How?

I wasn't aware of the conflict of interest policies when I started, but have no problem with abiding by them. I know that mgreason corrected some mistakes in the format for the external links (which was probably fine, and I messed it up).

I would like to appreciate you on your appointment as a member on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. This may the first request you received from a community member, requesting your help.

In a discussion with Jimmy Wales on the moral rights of the photographers and the personal rights of the subjects, he said "I think that the commons community has gone down a very sad and disappointing path with respect to ethical matters. My views on this are not new, and are well known. Our project is a grand humanitarian effort. That it has been hijacked by people who do not share our values is something that needs to be fixed."

We further requested him to bring this matter to the attention of WMF and make a resolution or something to force Commons make enough policies to protect our rights as a photographer and our commitments to our subjects. He replied: "I am just one board member on this issue. I will continue to call this to the attention of the board and staff, but I need help from the community to illustrate that this is a problem that concerns many of us."

So we would like to bring that discussion to the attention of every member on board.

Further, please note a somewhat related discussion at Commons too: Concern about the bureaucrat role of Russavia.

One admin even exclaimed in that discussion: "I find this rather an interesting discussion but what I find really intriguing is for all the "official" concerns being raised about Russavia's competence as a representative with authority within Commons this isnt being backup by the action of WMF. The reason being is that if there is such official concern over Russavia actions and representations of the community does he continue in a position of trust with OTRS having access to personal information and answer emails sent to the Foundation."

I would like to let you know that some of your strong opinions in your individual talk pages ([4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]) influenced the Commons community to initiate a discussion to develop a policy for courtesy deletions.

Hey Phoebe. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Good afternoon,

I saw you might be going to the Meetup/Berkeley Edit-a-thon, discovered you were a librarian from your user page and thought you might be able to give an informed answer to the following:

Sort version: What would be needed for a worthwhile descriptive bibliography article on a particular work?

Long version: I recently acquired Minkoff's Bibliography of the Black Sun Press. It's a terrific example of the genre of descriptive bibliography, and since the Black Sun Press is certainly notorious enough, I thought it would be pretty easy to crank out a bibliographical article listing their publications. The work in progress is here. There have been several complicating factors (multiple "Black Sun Presses" exist, should ephemera be included, how to handle pricing information) but for the most part the "table o' titles" is coming together nicely.

That table, though, leaves out all of the good stuff. I had originally thought I could include the bibliographical description of most of these works, copying Minkoff where his work was not creative and paraphrasing him (as well as others) where it was, but there's just too much. I considered spitting the article into several bibliographies by year, but that seems really artificial. Then it occurred to me that each of these works could have their own standalone article with a full bibliographic description, with the main table linking to each one.

Based on my poking around at the (moribund) WikiProject Bibliographies page, nobody has tried to do this before. If this really is a new class of article then there are going to be several issues that need hashing out: copyright (how much of an existing bibliography can be copied verbatum?), notability (does a single published descriptive bibliography of a work confer sufficient notability for an article?) and WP:OR (counting pages probably isn't original research, determining paper type might be, where to draw the line?).

Thoughts? Advice?

Hello. I am writing you because you are an elected community representative on the board of the Wikimedia Foundation. I am writing my other two representatives also. At some point in an appropriate venue, would you please comment on the community's decision to take down the VisualEditor? At the Administrator's Noticeboard right now there is a recently closed request for comment on a community-forced removal of the VisualEditor. I think that none of you three participated in that last discussion which resulted in the community changing MediaWiki code to remove the VisualEditor.

It is my wish that at least one of you would say something encouraging to show respect to the Wikimedia Foundation and to the Wikipedia community and their ability to work collaboratively to meet contributor needs. It might be the case that this event would be looked upon by people outside the community and perhaps even remembered in the future. Since you three are elected representatives who relay messages between the Wikimedia Foundation and the community, I would like for any of you to publicly comment on the situation in a succinct and positive way which demonstrates the constructive aspects of the relationships we all have with each other. I hope that this could be done in a venue which people would be likely to find if they started reading about this, but this need not be done in a place which would send people to this issue if they were not already searching for it.

I do not know who might be covering this in the The Signpost, for example, but if it is covered I wish that if you did not give statements in the article space then perhaps you could comment in the comment section if any article on the topic is published and you find this venue to be appropriate enough for your attention. I'm hard at work with the article for the historically significant 1912 silent short film A Cure for Pokeritis. Tracking down sources for 13 minutes of 90 year old film has been an interesting challenge, but there's one really important piece of information that eludes me, and that's anything at all about the music that would have accompanied the film at its release. I know that Vitagraph Studios had an exhibitors' publication, distributed to movie theaters that aired their films, giving their recommendations for the music to be played at each of them. Web sources disagree on exactly what that should have been called in February 1912, but I believe it would have been titled Vitagraph Bulletin of Life Portrayals (other options include just Vitagraph Bulletin or possibly Vitagraph Exhibitor). Needless to say, I've got very little publication information for the periodical; I know it had issue numbers, but I have no idea what issue I'd need for the recommendations for a February 23, 1912 film release.

This is so far outside my normal research zone that I'm at a big disadvantage. And my knowledge about what I need is sufficiently incomplete (not to mention the rarity, obscurity, and age issues) that my local library more or less laughed off my efforts to interlibrary loan the material. Assuming that Vitagraph bulletin of life portrayals is indeed the right title for 1912 issues of their music recommendation periodical, WorldCat lists 3 libraries: NY Public Library, University of South Carolina, and the Margaret Herrick Library in Beverly Hills. But it also doesn't give any issue information or date ranges, so I don't really even know how comprehensive the collections are at these institutions (over a decade of these things were published, possibly even weekly?). No luck from the University of South Carolina either, although they missed it by this much, and their collection was able to provide some insight into what I'm actually looking for. The Vitagraph Bulletin, under a zillion titles (they index theirs as Vitagraph Life Portrayals) was published every other week during 1912 (and probably earlier, perhaps under different titles), then switched to monthly publication in 1913. They have only a fragmentary sampling of the 1912 run: two issues, one from late January, and one from late March. So close, but so far. But from those issues, I am able to determine that I'm looking for Vitagraph Life Portrayals volume 1, number 16 (late February, 1912). Progress, I suppose.
