Help to review new article

Hello! I'm a new Wikipedia user and just published my first article for a class. I would greatly appreciate it if you took the time to give it a quick look and give me some feedback. It's the History of democracy in Mexico. Thanks! Claudia Paine22 (talk) 01:21, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Information icon Hello, I'm Gab4gab. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Elk Grove High School (Elk Grove Village, Illinois), but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. We don't consider www.wikia.com a reliable source because it's content, like Wikipedia, is contributed by users. In addition, the source says she grew up in Elk Grove. It does not say she attended Elk Grove High School. Gab4gab (talk) 19:07, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Hello Mr. Nolan. I noticed you have been adding some citations to articles where they have been requested. That is great news! Many of your sources are solid: book-based or reputable news outlets. Others are not so much: IMDb is not a RS for biographical information (see WP:RS/IMDb). Also, "madmonarchs.guusbeltman.nl" appears to be run by one guy, and has no "reputation for fact-checking or editorial oversight" per WP:RS. So I would ask you to use caution as you continue to add good sources. Thank you! Elizium23 (talk) 04:18, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
Again... revolvy.com is actually a Wikipedia mirror! There is no way you can use this as a reliable secondary source. Consider yourself formally warned three times now. Elizium23 (talk) 05:09, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Hernán Cortés

Why the addition of "see also"s? You added Cuernavaca, Morelos, Palace of Cortés, Tenochtilán. I can see maybe adding the last (he did conquer and destroy that city - but it's already linked in the text referencing that), but the first three? He happened to live in Cuernavaca, Morelos for a while. That doesn't mean we need a "See also" entry for those locations. That's like saying an article about GW Bush needs a "see also" for Texas, which is pretty absurd.

A "See Also" section should be articles which have notable chunks of information on the subject of this article, not already covered in this article. Not simply be a laundry list of things the article subject touched on. Tarl N. (discuss) 05:03, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

I would say he didn't simply live in Cuernavaca for a while--it was the center of his operation after he was turned down for Viceroy. He built two haciendas in the city (including the first sugar mill in Nueva Espana), what is said to be the first church on the continent, and the first civil building (Palace of Cortes) in Nueva Espana--which is where his wife lived and his legitimate children were born and lived until adulthood.

Battles in Cuauhnahuac (Cuernavaca) and Huaxtepex (Oaxtepec), both in Morelos, were key to the conquest of Tenochtitlan.

Since Tenochtitlan is referenced elsewhere, I'll remove it from the "See also" list; I'll also remove the Cuernavaca and Morelos references since they I can see your point about things that are touched upon in the article. However, the palace does seem to be important to the story of Cortes, and the article gives a fairly extensive description of why, when, and how it was built.Michael E Nolan (talk) 05:46, 4 January 2019 (UTC)Michael E Nolan

Hello, Michael E Nolan,

The Wikipedia article on John Steinbeck is on my watchlist, so I noticed your recent edits. Since you have further edited the ariticle, I am sure you have noticed mine. You are an enthuastic and productive Wikipedia editor; I hope you will enjoy your time here.

I left a summary for each recent edit I made. Perhaps I should explain further. Reliable sources are the most important aspect of a Wikipedia article. John Steinbeck is an important American author and a Nobel Laureate for Literature. Scholarly Biographies exist. These should be the first sources to check. Scholarly journals are also reliable sources. Please read the Wikipedia policy on verifiability and the guideline on reliable sources. Newspaper and television reports can also be reliable sources, as long as the organizations have a reputation for rigorous fact-checking. Blogs, unless by a recognized subject expert are not reliable sources; neither are student study guides.

Once a reliable source is found, use the Wikipedia guidelne WP:Citing sources for the proper way to build an in-line citation. There are several systems of citation in use in Wikipeda; each is equally valid, but the style should be consistent within an article.

If you have further questions, I will be happy to help. You may reply here. Just place a colon on the line after my signature and begin typing (the colon as a first character on a line forces an indent—this keeps a conversation on track). I will reply using two colons to indent further.

Teahouse query

Hi there, just saw your post at the teahouse- does this help for your 404 ? https://web.archive.org/web/20170104171150/http://www.cuernavaca.gob.mx/turismo/?page_id=2621 - The wayback machine had an older version cached. BTW, it would be better to rewrite that section of your article; the wording appears to be a direct WP:COPYPASTE of the google translated version of this one, and that could get your article deleted; Wikipedia is very strict about copyvio, and it extends to translated versions too. Curdle (talk) 22:30, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. I believe the article you linked to is an earlier version of what I wrote since it is actually dated 2013-2015, and one point in particular is different. I will rewrite the parts that may be seen as plagiarism.Michael E Nolan (talk) 15:41, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Michael E Nolan

1960 in mexico moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, 1960 in mexico, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Famousbirthdays.com as a source

Hi Michael E Nolan. I noticed that you recently used famousbirthdays.com as a source for biographical information in 1960.
