Talk:Meistriliiga

Founded

The league was founded in 1991 and the current, 2010 is the league's 20th season. But in the template it says Founded 1992. When was it founded and what was the first season? Also look 1991 in Estonian football. Pelmeen10 (talk) 22:35, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fully professional

In regards to the league being fully professional or not I would like to see a source to indicate this. PortlandOregon97217 (talk) 11:34, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Meistriliiga → Premium liiga – Proposal to change the name of the article to Premium liiga, as the league last carried the name Meistriliiga more than a decade ago, in 2012. Since the cooperation agreement deal with A. Le Coq in 2013, the league has carried the name Premium liiga. Last week, on 12 January 2024, the logo of the league was modified in which the "ML" symbol in the center was replaced by the letters "PL", removing the last indication to the former Meistriliiga name. Furthermore, the Estonian FA and the league's official regulatory document all state the league's full official name to be A. Le Coq Premium liiga and the name "Meistriliiga" can be seen to no longer be used to refer to the league. • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. It's definitely still know as the Meistriliiga, Premium liiga is the sponsored/official name but not the most commonly used. Soccerway and FlashScore among other still use Meistriliiga. Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 14:02, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support The most commonly used name for the league is Premium liiga, as this is the name used in the Estonian media, who cover the league the most. Transfermarkt, SofaScore and Eurosport, among a number of other websites, also use the name Premium liiga. It is very likely that Soccerway and Flashscore still use the name Meistriliiga because of the Wikipedia article in question. Sancos (talk) 23:36, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose A. Le Coq Premium is all the sponsor name (Premium is one of the products that they produce). The WP:COMMONNAME that won't change throughout time or if they change sponsor is Meistriliiga. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:19, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support There are no sources that suggest the name would be changed to Meistriliiga if the sponsor changes or disappears. Estonian FA states that the league name was changed to Premium liiga in 2013 and the current official full name is A. Le Coq Premium liiga. A. Le Coq indeed also has a product named ‘Premium’, but the official statement from 2013 that reported the name change reads that Premium also refers to the fact that it is the highest ‘premier’ league of the country. • Oppose as above, we don't use the sponsored name. GiantSnowman 16:46, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support A. Le Coq Premium liiga would be the sponsored name. Premium liiga would not directly refer to the sponsor, but to the fact it is the top-flight league of the country. Sancos (talk) 23:36, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sancos You're only allowed to vote once, I've struck all your other votes. And Premium is part of the sponsor name, as A. Le Coq Premium is a brand of beer they produce. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:52, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. This article is about an Estonian league, and the Estonian Wikipedia has no problem with the name Premium liiga. JIP | Talk 19:27, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter what Estonian Wiki calls it. Per WP:USEENGLISH, we should go with the name used in English language sources and they tend to use Meistriliiga. Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 20:13, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment In Estonia, it's not called Meistriliiga, but Premium liiga. They even changed the logo from ML to PL not long ago. Just recently they added A. Le Coq into the name and its full name now is "A. Le Coq Premium liiga". Not sure whats the thing with not allowing sponsor names, when there's no proof of the "original" name. Pelmeen10 (talk) 15:28, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Sponsored names are avoided where possible. Number 57 12:38, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Meistrilliga is the common, non-sponsored name. SportingFlyer T·C 11:43, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
