portuguese philosophers

It seems from the articles themselves that Henry Simpson (economist) and Antonio de Macedo (author and filmaker) have no claims to the category of "Portuguese philosophers". Please advise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.180.211.244 (talk) 05:47, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Madeira

The African country of Madeira is listed in the {{AfricaProject}} template as a workgroup; however, it creates categories in the WikiProject Portugal as a workgroup. See Category:WikiProject Portugal work groups and Category:WikiProject Portugal. Should the {{WikiProject Portugal}} template be changed to add Madeira as a work group?

Probable copyright violation by translation

I recently finished copyediting Portuguese heraldry, correcting mostly what appeared to be errors in translation (presumably from Portuguese) due to literal translation and/or unfamiliarity with English idiom. Then I went to look at the other language pages – only Spanish and Portuguese exist – in the hope of checking up some unclear expressions. Although I can't really speak Spanish or even approximately Portuguese, I can make enough sense out of both of them for some basics. I was shocked to find that the Portuguese article is only about 210 words long, and the entire text of the Spanish article is "La heráldica portuguesa se ha usado desde el siglo XII", i.e., "Portuguese heraldry has been used since the 12th century"; while the English article amounts to

Prose size (text only): 80 kB (13963 words) "readable prose size"

So where did the rest come from? Especially since it was evidently not written in English by a fluent speaker of English. The likeliest answer is that it was translated from a detailed source in Portuguese, or possibly Spanish -- probably one of the listed References -- by someone who was not fluent in English, and posted without attribution: in other words, plagiarized, and a probable copyright violation.

The great bulk of the article was added by one or more anonymous editors from 26 August 2015 to 11 January 2016. The editor may have changed the wording enough to avoid copyvio, but without checking it's impossible to tell; and as I said, my Ibero-Romance language abilities are nowhere near up to the task.

I posted this question originally at Talk:Portuguese heraldry#Possible copyright violation, then (somewhat edited) at the Teahouse. There was some discussion at the Teahouse, but no resolution, and the post has been archived to Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive_466#Probable copyright violation.

Please {{Ping}} me to discuss.

--Thnidu (talk) 05:29, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

{{Ping}} My understanding of content from Wikipedia PT has always been that most of the Portuguese hobbyists and nationalists prefer to copy directly from sources without attribution. You may actually discover that content was copied DIRECTLY from another website (such as the parish or municipal websites). This obviously makes it harder for translations to other idioms. The Wikipedia template about "translating from corresponding PT Wikipedia source" has always bothered me in that respect. In the translation process, I usually look for attributable sources supporting PT Wikipedia edits (in my case, since they are articles about architecture or geography, I reference SIPA or "Património"). Otherwise, I prefer not to translate from corresponding Wiki site without verifiable sources. It is a "wild west" on PT for the most part, most should not be discouraged about direct translation, but should follow-up their translations with verifiable sources. ruben jc ZEORYMER (talk) 10:14, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
@Zeorymer: Well, that's discouraging, but at least now I know. Thanks for that. But this was not translated from the pt.wiki article, which is only about 2% its length. It might have been translated sentence by sentence from some page(s) on the website cited there under References (at a dead link; I just updated it with pt template citar web + arquivourl=), but that's beyond me to check, and probably too much even for a fluent pt/en bilingual to undertake.
(By the way, the way to use Template: ping is like this: {{ping|Zeorymer}}.)
Boa noite! --Thnidu (talk) 05:52, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Hey Thnidu and Zeorymer, I noticed it too when i translated alot of the Castles of portugal articles from list of castles in portugal. The idioms don't translate well. Winterysteppe (talk) 21:49, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
Yes, Portuguese tends to be very "flowery" in the manner of its translation. That is why, even as content can be literally translated, it needs to be interpreted, which implies an understanding of the cultural significance of the terms and also of what can be, or should, be translated. ruben jc ZEORYMER (talk) 21:58, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:20, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Media upload of images from Guinea-Bissau and Senegal

Dear project members,

I would like to draw your attention to a media upload that may be of relevance to your project. The African Studies Center, Leiden University, donated 756 images made by Roel Coutinho, a Dutch MD working in Guinea-Bissau and Senegal between 1973 and 1974. The images show aspects of daily life such as food preparation, festivities and school and hospital buildings, among other things. The metadata (including Portuguese captions) were prepared by Michele Portatadino, the upload was done by Hans Muller using the GWToolset.

Notice to participants at this page about adminship

Many participants here create a lot of content, have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the considerations at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.

So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:

You could be very helpful in evaluating potential candidates, and maybe even finding out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

1936 Naval Revolt (Portugal)

Recently I have been working on the article 1936 Naval Revolt (Portugal). By looking at its Portuguese equivalent, I was able to come up with another source: [1]. Unfortunately, it's in Portuguease, a language I do not know. Is there anyone part of WikiProject Portugal who would be willing to help me translate and comprehend this document? If so, where could I reach them? Indy beetle (talk) 13:49, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

The article in question is not a article, at all, rather a excerpt from the official governmental diary (Diário do Governo), similar to the British Hansard. What might be associated with the events of the "revolt" is the decree law passed by the Government-in-Coucnil to the King. It refers to authorizing the Ministry of the Navy to "fire" or retire officers involved in the events on the 8 September 1936, onboard the Afonso de Albuquerque and Dão. Further, the dispatch suggests that this would not impede applying criminal sanctions to those involved, but readmitted those involved in prooving their military obligation, resisting the insubordination and using all their force to dominate the enemy. Also, article 3 suggested that others could be transfered to the reserves by their own request. The act entered in to vigor immediately on the date published. The remaining references refer to accounting practices within continental Portugal and colonies, the creation of a customshouse in Rebordelo and transfer of funds. I can translate it (Decreto-lei 26:995) verbatim if you would like. ruben jc ZEORYMER (talk) 13:29, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Bom dias senhors e senhoras - that's all I know in Portuguese, and I would probably mispronounce it.
It appears there a two different articles about the same subject. See http://www.lusa.pt
What do you think about this?
Pedro Austrália aka --Shirt58 (talk) 11:55, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Yup, sounds like a duplication problem that needs to be remedied. I will attempt to resolve this today. ruben jc ZEORYMER (talk) 13:36, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Help with Almada Fórum

Hey folks! I recently stumbled upon the page Almada Fórum which appears to be "the third shopping center in Portugal". It has no references and has been tagged as an orphan for 7 years. Any chance someone could take a look, maybe find a source, and maybe even de-orphan it? I'd be eternally grateful! Thanks a bunch! Happy editing! Ajpolino (talk) 05:36, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

You might want to start with the Portuguese-language article, pt:Almada Forum. It has a substantial infobox, six references, and solves the mystery of the lede: it's the third-largest shopping center in Portugal as of that writing. Elizium23 (talk) 05:51, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response! Any chance someone here might be able to take that task upon themselves? I can't read Portuguese so I could try to stumble my way through with Google translate, but if someone who can read pt:Almada Forum, could take a crack at improving the article, I'm sure they'd do far better than I could. 2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages

Greetings WikiProject Portugal/Archive 2 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

  • Fix and improve Mr.Z-bot's popular pages report

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Question about Portuguese newspapers

Hi, I'm trying to find out which newspapers in Portugal are considered the newspapers of record, the equivalent of The Times, The Washington Post or Le Figaro. Our article, Newspaper of record, lists Diario de Noticias for Portugal. Is that correct? It's apparently in a tabloid format, but is it tabloid journalism? Any pointers would be very helpful. SarahSV (talk) 18:59, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Courrier International describes it as on par with the other portuguese newspaper of record, Público ([2]), so I think you can say that, yes. Regards, Comte0 (talk) 23:12, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Portugal/Archive 2/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Portugal.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Portugal, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. This is currently the top-cited missing 'journal' in WP:JCW/MIS. While it's not an academic journal, it does seem like something that could possibly have an article on Wikipedia.

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:51, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

The idea that Luis Figo can, despite his undoubted skills, be considered of High importance whereas Coimbra is ranked of Mid importance strikes me as ridiculous. As of now, Portugal has one Star status article, Caldas da Rainha. I believe that we can help improve cities such as Lisbon or Porto to Star status. Many other places can be improved to Guide status (or better) with a bit of effort: Braga, Coimbra, Peneda-Gerês National Park, etc. If you would like to help, please see the following for guidance:

Naturally, you are welcome to contribute to articles beyond Portugal, as piques your interest. --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 18:29, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I have started an article on this post-Carnation era general and have been told by the Military History project that with an image, it will become C-class. There doesn't seem to be public domain images on the foreign versions of the page, nor a photograph of his bust on Commons. I have been alerted to this video where the conditions say that RTP can grant a license for non-commercial educational use when contacted by a Portuguese citizen. So first, is anyone familiar with the law and whether this would allow the use of a screenshot on Wikipedia? And second, could anyone obtain this license and put the image on the page?

If this is not allowed on Wikipedia, the second option would be to take a photograph of the bust at the Praca da República in Porto, if anyone lives in the area.

Thank you for your cooperation and I look forward to speaking soon. Unknown Temptation (talk) 18:48, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

I don't think that RTP licence would be good enough. WP:IUPC states: "Note that images that are licensed for use only on Wikipedia, or only for non-commercial or educational use, or under a license that doesn't allow for the creation of modified/derived works, are unsuitable." I suppose you have to find somewhere an image with explicitly freer usage policy. (But I don't know how it works exactly, as I've never done it.) Or visit Porto and photograph the bust! LongLivePortugal (talk) 23:00, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing up about the rights to the video. As Pires Veloso was a public figure, there likely are free photos, just like we have free photos of about every other prominent person on this encyclopedia. However, due to my limited connections and language abilities, I will not be the one who finds them. I have visited Porto, yet I am unfamiliar with that park. Current issues mean I am unlikely to go abroad any time soon. I would be grateful if in the spirit of cooperation there might be a user on this board who lives nearby. Women in Red Europe contest

After successfully completing our Asia and Africa contests over the past six months, we now welcome contributions to our Women in Europe contest which runs for three separate months from April to June 2021. To qualify for the contest, articles have to contain at least 160 words or 1,000 characters of running text and participants need to be members of Women in Red. We look forward to lots of new biographies of women from Portugal.--Ipigott (talk) 06:29, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

Surnames question

I have a question on Portuguese naming system and an article I just created: Patrícia Gouveia. Her full name is "Patricia Alexandra Carvalho Ferreira Sousa Gouveia", which of these name(s) would be the maternal surname, and which name(s) the paternal surname? The last 4 names all looks like surnames to me, but she seems to be referred to as Gouveia (which means that would be the paternal surname). I want to try and use Template:Portuguese name correctly which is why I ask. Joseph2302 (talk) 21:20, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

Yes, all last four names are surnames. Common practice in Portugal, when parents choose to give the child four names instead of two, would be that the first two come from the mother and the last two from the father (and, within each such pair, the first one would come from the grandmother and the second one from the grandfather). Thus, for purposes of the template, I believe it should state that the maternal name is Ferreira and the paternal one is Gouveia (assuming that she either is not married or did not take her husband's surname in marriage, meaning all such names are truly 'biological'). This is explained in Portuguese name#Number of names.
I must say, now that you've drawn my attention to it, that I find the template to be quite incomplete, as it does not allow for any fields containing grandmothers' surnames in case they are passed down to the child (in this case, Carvalho and Sousa) or for any field containing the husband's surname, in cases where it occurs. Instead, it focuses on the possibility of generational suffixes, such as 'Filho' and 'Neto', which are so rare (compared to the previous two much more common events) that even I didn't know it was possible! I can't understand.
Finally, please note that her first name is Patrícia, not Patricia. Please don't forget to correct that in her full name on the article. LongLivePortugal (talk) 17:08, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks LongLivePortugal. One last question: looking at Neide Simões (another article I created), her fullname is "Neide Marina Fidalgo Alves Mateus Simões". So does that mean that Alves is her maternal surname, and Simões is her paternal surname (assuming that all names are "biological" as you defined it above)? Sorry for all the questions, if the template was implemented and documented for this scenario, then I would be using that documentation rather than asking here. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:48, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
As an aside, if anyone one in this project knows how to update templates, it would be good to get the scenarios for people with four surnames added to Template:Portuguese name. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:48, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
@Joseph2302: Yes, according to common practice, her maternal surname would be Alves. Please note that this is just common practice, and I can't guarantee that it is the case with every single person, as I believe parents can legally choose a different order. Furthermore, in general, if you find someone with exactly three surnames (even if you assume they are all 'biological'), you can't know whether two come from the father and one from the mother, or vice-versa. Finally, of course any one or two of the existing surnames (usually at the end, but not necessarily I believe) may come from the person's husband or wife (although uncommon, husbands can also take their wives' surnames). So, now that I think about it, perhaps the template should even be omitted in cases where you can't find any sources telling us the parents' and spouse's surnames, so we don't risk writing here any false information. What do you think?
As for the template, it definitely does need change, in order to account for all these issues. Do you know where we can find out how to do that? LongLivePortugal (talk) 11:44, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

WikiProject Macau

Hello there! I invite you all to please help revive WikiProject Macau. I just recently created six articles related to government-administered awards and many recipients have pages on other language editions of Wikipedia which do not yet have pages in English. There is a considerable amount of articles that need to be created and improved on Macau. I also see much potential for collaboration with the Portuguese, Chinese, and even Cantonese editions, which at times are more thoroughly written in comparison to their English counterparts. Any help will be appreciated. Yinglong999 (talk) 07:04, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

WikiProject Portuguese Empire

Fellow contributors:

Due to the high amount of missing articles and vandalism on the English wikipedia, I have decided to take the initiative and submitted a proposal for a WikiProject dedicated to the Portuguese Empire, similiar in nature to the WikiProject British Empire. I invite anyone who is interested to support the project. Wareno (talk) 20:22, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

After the election

All the pages on politicians in the last Assembly need to be updated, either to record that the person was not re-elected or was. New articles are needed on the new members who don't yet have a page, although it is perhaps best left until their biographies are posted on parlamento.pt. Roundtheworld (talk) 19:50, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

I found a list here, however, you can't choose the XVth legislature in the advanced search yet. Looking further, I found the result of the elections at the Home Office here. With some editing, I got this list (foreign districts are still to be counted) :

(moved and updated at List of deputies of Portugal (XV legislature)) Comte0 (talk) 16:36, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

Regards, Comte0 (talk) 22:08, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

I have updated the list with pt:Lista de deputados de Portugal (XV Legislatura). I have the feeling the Portuguese articles were created at random. Do you believe we can invoke WP:IAR and create all the articles? Regards, Comte0 (talk) 15:58, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Great work. I will work on the women, as part of my ongoing contribution to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, starting with those that are more than stubs. Roundtheworld (talk) 19:52, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. I created List of deputies of Portugal (XV legislature), it should help in avoiding the orphan banner on your articles. Regards, Comte0 (talk) 16:13, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Request for help with Draft

Hi! After posting on the Teahouse about this draft that I was working on, they gave the advice that I should ask help from the relevant WikiProject. I'm not in any way an expert on the era this person lived in, and I'm not experienced with editing, so maybe you guys could try add some sources to the article (most of the mentions I found on the internet were from books)? Thanks, Vortex (talk) 13:03, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I was wondering if someone could confirm at Talk:Nelson Piquet#About Hamilton what the English translation of "neguinho" is, as we are not 100% sure. Thanks. SSSB (talk) 19:05, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Two articles

A most bizarre situation has developed involving the pages Battle of Benadir and Battle of Barawa, where for the past four years Somalian nationalists, sockpuppets and unregistered users have persistently sought to rewrite these pages about two minor Portuguese raids on the east African coast into astounding Somalian victories, written in poor English, against all evidence, removing sources and sourced material, despite numerous locks or bans by administrators even. Vandalism inevitably continues once protection wears off, and I thought I'd put this out there because so far almost nobody else has helped to take care of the issue and it's starting to drive me nuts. I already appealed for a permanent lock once but nobody answered my request. Wareno (talk) 06:05, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Portugal:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

This draft has a lot of Portuguese references. I am hoping someone would be willing to have a look at the draft and let me know if the references provided would allow this subject to pass notability. If so, just ping me and I will move it to the mainspace (unless someone else decides to). Cheers! CNMall41 (talk) 05:17, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
