Have just started this article, related to the reverse migration of African Americans back to the South from 1965-2000. It's still going on, of course, but they have a lot of data on it. This is the real story, or the bigger story, behind some aspects of Black flight. In 2000 GA, MD and TX were the gaining states for black college graduates (this is mostly a middle class migration). CA was the largest net loser of African Americans, unlike its trend for the previous few decades. Gaining states are the New South: GA, TN, VA, MD, NC, and FL - where there are good jobs, knowledge industry, tech, service fields. People are going to metro areas, and Atlanta is the biggest draw of all. I found a big Brookings Institution paper on this, and have seen other references.--Parkwells (talk) 03:02, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Just wanted to let project members know about a great resource I've been using - zotero, which can be downloaded for free, is a web-based citation and source/material manager developed by the Dept. for History and New Media at George Mason University near Washington, DC. I've been using it for a few months but am just beginning to capitalize on it and shift from using notes and scraps of paper around my computer! You can take "notes", create tags for notes and articles, books, etc.; download snapshots of title pages, capture URL and titles, access dates, etc. There is more that I have not begun to touch, not yet having made it through the instructional video. --Parkwells (talk) 16:19, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Contradiction needs resolved re: 1st Af-Am female pilot

There is contradictory reportage from two sources making competing claims. Since this involves not just List of African-American firsts but also the article Vernice Armour, which makes a major point of this claim, I've removed this entry from ["List of African-American firsts"] article until the competing claims can be sorted out on this talk page and any related pages can be adjusted.

The Wiki article Vernice Armour cites the Jet magazine article "Vernice Armour, 1st black female combat pilot, serves in Persian Gulf as family copes - National Report", April 14, 2003, by Nicole Walker. It says, "After flight school, Armour took an assignment at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station near San Diego, CA, and honed her skills piloting the famed Super Cobra. In March 2002, she was recognized as the Department of Defense's lone African-American female combat pilot."

The editor changing the claim to that of Captain Christina Hopper (who has no Wikipedia article) cites the webzine Talking Proud!, which has much less of a publishing history than Jet and may not or may not use professional journalists, but is a niche publication specializing in the subject. The article "'Thumper' Hopper, F-16 fighter jock, Iraqi war vet, instructor pilot", non-bylined, published February 26, 2005, says, "Her squadron deployed in December 2002 to Al Jaber Air Base, Kuwait as part of the 332rd Air Expeditionary Wing supporting Operations Southern watch and Iraqi Freedom, making her the first Air Force African-American female fighter pilot to fight in a war."

I'm wondering whether Armour was the first female Af-Am combat pilot, and Hopper the first female Af-Am combat pilot deployed in a war zone?

Editors on the "List of African American firsts" decided to set a list up for "First African American mayors" to be able to reflect the many varieties of cities represented. Please feel free to add appropriate mayors; be sure you use the year elected (not sworn in to office) or appointed. As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed African American culture and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article and several other related WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. There is a proposal to merge this article with Freedman. I've discussed at the Talk page of FPC why I think this is inappropriate - both in terms of societies (this article refers to more than the US and to earlier than US history in Louisiana) and timing (Freedman defines former slaves freed by the Emancipation Proclamation and Civil War)- but it would be good for others with an interest to chime in. As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

The state of LA has designated sites and is promoting this directed cultural heritage trail. It includes more than 20 sites ranging from Congo Square/Louis Armstrong Square in New Orleans (and other sites there) to the River Road African American Museum in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, and other sites up to Shreveport. I'm going to create a stub article on the trail, use it for a category, and mark sites included in it.--Parkwells (talk) 10:59, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

The article is up, and all sites with articles are identified on the "Trail" in text and category. There are a few museums and a church without articles, including the New Orleans African American Museum, so editors with an interest in culture are invited to write up articles so that all sites on the new heritage "trail" will have wikipedia links. This category appeared to be set up to cover historic Native American trails (for which there is a sub-category), pioneer trails, and auto routes - especially related to the migrations of peoples, movement and trading of peoples and goods, early roadways and highways. I see from the article Historical roads and trails of the United States (watch those slight differences in wording!) that generally it applies to roads before a certain date, so is mostly a discussion/identification of roadways.

There is a growing class of Cultural or Heritage Trails, designated by themes by cities, states or federal bodies, such as the Freedom Trail and Black Heritage Trail in Boston, both pedestrian-oriented, or the LA Trail noted above, which also includes sections reachable only by car. Should this be a new category and what should be the name? I think it should be a separate category, as the sites are linked by different themes of heritage and culture. I started a discussion at the category page, Historic trails and roads in the United States, but wanted to bring up the topic here, too. Making a separate category helps highlight these trails, as the cities and states intend.--Parkwells (talk) 11:27, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

I would suggest going with the most frequently used name. "Heritage Tourism Trails" gets 338 Google hits. "Cultural Heritage Trails" gets 538 gh. "Cultural or Heritage Trails" gets 2 gh. I think an accompanying article that utilizes both of those names, and then used as a main article for the category, would settle the question of parameters for including an article. Don't bother, you've got about 5 more minutes before somebody comes along and reverses every change you have made ( that Ihave not already) . Thats the way it works sorry. thats bs. this is my wikipedia too, i want to change the box so all six pictures line in a better order, if you cant help then learn to at least decent to the other editor. i am trying to figure out how to do it and i guess you dont know about it good enouph to help

Wow. I followed a wikilink to this article because I was working on referencing the article on Crip Walk where one of the references describing the term "crip walk" directly referenced the term "black pride". Amazingly, I found the black pride article to be replete with racism and lacking sources. We need some editors to help make this article better. I'm not an expert in the subject, but will lend as much help as I can.

Hi, I'm looking at the Wikimedia collection of images and the African American section seems to be ill-served. Most media (800 files) seem to be put in the category African Americans. I have created an African American History category and many subcategories. However, the task is overwhelming. This is a heads-up about some early chatter regarding categorizing people as Category:African American. A recent AfD deleted the category Category:African American physicians, in it an editor suggested "at some point we will need a position on how to deal with Category:African Americans." • Freechild'sup? 05:04, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

This independent city was an early industrial city in VA, and its 3,224 free blacks comprised the largest such population in the South in 1860, and one of the largest in the nation. Nearly half the city's population was black, and of that, one-third were free. Most of the free blacks lived on Pocahontas Island, now designated as a National Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
