Reviews of Ancient Evenings

Hello, I am looking for the text of two reviews of Norman Mailer's novel Ancient Evenings, for use at Ancient Evenings.

The first review: "Norman in Egypt" by Harold Bloom, published in the April 28, 1983 issue of The New York Review of Books, Volume 30, Number 7. There is an extract from the review here. EBSCO contains only a listing of the review, not its text.

The second review: "In Pyramid and Palace" by Richard Poirier, published in the June 10, 1983 issue of The Times Literary Supplement, Issue 4184, pages 591-592. ISSN is 0307-661X and the Accession Number 16545455. There is an extract from the review here.

Thanks, Gazal world (talk) 19:13, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gazal world, based on the information there, I'm not quite sure if that is realistic. It says there is a print copy available, but obviously nobody can scan the entire thesis, and then it says that one can -- alternatively, -- "purchase a copy for private research as a PDF file" (my emphasis), which suggests to me that there is no free electronic access (even on-site). I'd probably email the author if I were in your position. If Cambridge has an electronic version, he may well have it too, and presumably he wouldn't profit from their rather hefty access fee anyway (£75 per https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/251676/restricted-resource?bitstreamId=844426). But I have some difficulty seeing a way for a volunteer to help with this request. Maybe I'm missing something :). — Pajz (talk) 21:02, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see. If electronic access is not available, then I will mark this request as 'resolved'. I failed to obtain a copy from the author. --Gazal world (talk) 21:09, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gazal world: ResearchGate references it here. You could try the "Request full-text" button, but if you have already contacted the author, it's unlikely this will yield anything. —Bruce1eetalk 23:49, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Sunday Times - early 1980

Hi

I am after an article (possibly a couple) from The Sunday Times from early 1980 (probably 16 March 1980, but certainly before 26 April). It concerns the death of Blair Peach and the report produced by Commander CASS. I suspect it was from the S Times Insight team, but maybe not.

Thanks, SchroCat (talk) 20:26, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: The Gale sub subscription allows access to The Times archives but not to The Sunday Times. WBGconverse 06:01, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Even a subscription to The Times doesn't give you access to The Sunday Times archive - it's a separate file that is only accessible through Gale. - SchroCat (talk) 13:17, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gale's Sunday Times Digital Archive isn't included in the Wikipedia Library subscription. —Bruce1eetalk 14:04, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I know. Someone has previously sent me stuff they could obtain from their university, but they no longer have access unfortunately. I'm hoping that some other passer-by has access... Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 21:38, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, Gale only has issues of The Sunday Times from 1985 on. Cheers, gnu57 22:37, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, they have the full set from 1822 onwards - SchroCat (talk) 04:36, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I do have access to the print version but since there are quite a few potentially relevant issues and there is, as best as I can tell, no annual register or similar, the relevant articles are probably hard to find. However, I'll at least check the March 16 issue, though. If somebody could narrow down the date range, that'd obviously be helpful. — Pajz (talk) 19:36, 25 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sent two articles from the March 16 issue to SchroCat, — Pajz (talk) 15:21, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Many, many thanks Pajz - you absolute star! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 15:34, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have no clue about whether this is an extremely fringe-field but am having a hard time in locating any library, that holds this journal/magazine.
Making a simultaneous request over the resource exchange at German wiki, might serve better given that ISU seems to be a Germany based organisation. I note though that the German National Library catalog returns no relevant holding which is weird:-( WBGconverse 14:29, 20 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

{{resolved}} Sup RXits  :) any chance someone can send the "Neville" or "de Neville" index pages of the following? None of them are available on Gbooks to me (although if they to anyone else, a screen cap will be fine of course):

Thanks very much for the link, Pajz, I didn't realize it as an article. As for the other, I don't really mind—probably the most recent would be best but, frankly, whichever is most easily accessible. Cheers, ——SerialNumber54129 08:26, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The International Who's Who - Thomas H. Haines

For Thomas H. Haines, I'm looking for verification that this biochemist has an entry in this reference book (2005 or later, more recent is better). Also need a complete citation if you round out the citation template above. Thanks, Netoholic @ 09:51, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Netoholic, if I understand the ZDB record correctly, the online edition of this reference work is http://www.worldwhoswho.com (titled "The International Who's Who Online" until 2007) and there no longer is a print edition. In that database, I do not see an entry for Thomas H. Haines. A search for "Haines" only turns up 1. HAINES Brian William British writer, poet and researcher, 2. HAINES Emily Canadian singer, songwriter and musician (keyboards, guitar), 3. HAINES John Francis British poet and local government official (retd), 4. HAINES John Meade American poet, writer and teacher, 5. HAINES Luke British singer and songwriter. — Pajz (talk) 10:27, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure about the online service, but the series is still in print - https://www.routledge.com/series/IWW . -- Netoholic @ 11:09, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And a snip at only 850 GB pounds sterling  ;) ——SerialNumber54129 11:16, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like a good business to be in. -- Netoholic @ 11:19, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Well, my library has a copy, but since that site also specifically says that it is "Also available online at www.worldwhoswho.com, featuring thousands of click-through web links and email addresses, and advanced search functions enabling users to search by name, nationality, place and date of birth and by profession" and since I do have access to that database (which doesn't contain an entry on him), I'm not sure there's a point in checking the printed edition as well. Seems like a bit of a waste of time. Did someone specifically claim there *is* an entry? — Pajz (talk) 11:40, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
His CV lists him being in both Who's Who in America and International Who's Who. I did find him in a copy of the Who's Who in America 2011, so I'm reasonably confident he's in at least some print versions. -- Netoholic @ 12:32, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the WorldCat entry, might help someone find one at a local library. -- Netoholic @ 11:19, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Netoholic, as expected, there is no entry for "Haines" in The international who's who / 2019,1 = Ed. 82, none in The international who's who / 2018,1 = Ed. 81, and none in The international who's who / 2005 (2004) = Ed. 68. — Pajz (talk) 14:33, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks much, Pajz -- Netoholic @ 14:39, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
