T:MP

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. ~ Amory (utc) 19:16, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a pseudo-namespace redirect of a type that is strongly discouraged. Unlike all the remaining 80 or so T: redirects, it doesn't go to a template namespace, and it's further confusing because it has absolutely nothing to do with either Template:mp or Template:Main page. Still, I wouldn't have bothered nominating it for deletion – presumably people use it so why shouldn't they? – but then I noticed that the redirect was discussed at this 2010 RfD. The discsussion resulted in deletion, only for the redirect to be recreated a month later, and – surreally – eventually sealed with indefinite full protection, apparently to stop people from trying to get it deleted. If we're going to keep a redirect that's confusing in so many ways, we'd need an explicit consensus and evidence of significant use, neither of which I can see – it's got 80, or fewer, uses – for a shortcut to one of Wikipedia's most-popular project pages (and until just now, one prominently advertised there) – that's a paltry number. The few people who like that sort of shortcut can instead use the straightforward and regular WT:MP; typing one extra letter isn't too much to ask for, is it? – Uanfala (talk) 22:07, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. This redirect (and any redirect T:Foo that targets a Talk page) is ambiguous and may cause confusion. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:07, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The Main Page is uniquely located (in article space but is really a portal), and T:MP was specifically exempted from the cross-namespace rules when they were first introduced in 2009. The 2010 deletion discussion was overturned because it was never announced on Talk:Main Page and only three people participated. I notice you haven't informed that page either. It's a useful redirect with numerous incoming links and there doesn't seem to be any benefit to getting rid of it. Modest Genius talk 10:53, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as above, plus it's a useful shorthand. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 11:23, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep The Main Page is a special case. Now that the history of why the RfD was overturned has been explained to the OP maybe they will withdraw this. P-K3 (talk) 12:14, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • If it turns out this redirect is useful to a large number of people, then I'd happily withdraw. But I'm not seeing that now, and I'm still not seeing any particularly strong justification for keeping a redirect that's confusing at so many levels. – Uanfala (talk) 12:21, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Ambiguous and potentially confusing. CycloneYoris talk! 00:39, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Useful, historically well used shortcut. No problem with keeping it as an exception to normal practice. Plus, it literally is an acronym for the page itself, which I find its most useful feature. --Jayron32 12:53, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Added and cited. That article is certainly on a notable topic, and it's certainly worth mentioning some of the character parodies, so I've done so there. Also, these redirects are entirely plausible search terms, and readers using them should be rewarded with a correct target as a result. This one gets 100 searches a year, for example. This is a preparation that's used to treat chronic hepatitis in Japan, and it contains glycyrrhizin as its primary active ingredient. I had encountered some people suggesting it be used to treat COVID-19 elsewhere on the internet, and so I was looking for it on Wikipedia but didn't find anything about it, hence the redirect. I may add a reference to it in the target article thereafter. • Keep; harmless and unambiguous. Not much to be gained by deleting these at all. J947 [cont] 19:30, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, since these are unusually plausible typos. Pld English and 9ld English are both one character away from Old English (and ditto for the others), but they're graphically quite different — if you just glance quickly at what you typed, you'll see the error. Conversely, O and 0 are similar enough that a brief glance might not show you your error, so while you're not more likely to make the typo, you're more likely to search for it because you're less likely to fix it. Nyttend backup (talk) 20:12, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

These are all recently created redirects (by CityOfSails2) from some minecraft cruft to their real-world counterpart, which is unhelpful. It got deleted eventually and nobody remembers this, so let's delete the redirect. 77.98.105.119 (talk) 12:54, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ж-looking frog
  • The word for "frog" in many Slavic languages starts with ж (zhe), and so the image of a frog typically features in pictorial alphabet charts. However, as far as I know there are no stable associations between letters and words in Cyrillic (the way there are say for Thai), so the redirect doesn't really serve a purpose. The discussion referred to by 77.98.105.119 is at Talk:Zhe (Cyrillic)#Official ж-looking frog discussion, and the image appears to be the one on the right (caption copied from article at the time). It's one of those silly things that could draw a hearty chuckle, but there was no way the image could have been kept, and there's no way the redirect could be kept either. – Uanfala (talk) 13:26, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Ss112: I chose to open an RfD because I see a choice between retarget and delete. Whether or not you agree, you should wait for the outcome of the RfD before taking unilateral action. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:43, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • @Shhhnotsoloud: Yes, and most users usually just decide for themselves instead of always jumping to go to RfD. As the one who created the "1940-41 nhl seaosn" I have a feeling that was the case when I did that (back in 2006, so I have no recollection whatsoever). I know for myself I will on occasion create redirects like the above to save myself from typos like that. That said I don't really lean either way: I'm sure they aren't often used (I haven't looked at the stats to confirm this), but there really isn't anything lost by keeping them.
