Uploading and downloading

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was histmerge "Uploading and downloading" to Upload, delete "uploading or downloading". There is unanimous consensus that these redirects should be changed, with a strong majority favouring removal. As an old version of "uploading and downloading" was cut-and-pasted for both upload and download, a histmerge is necessary and the discussion below suggested that the more plausible successor article is upload. Deryck C. 11:24, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Uploading and downloadingUpload  (links · history · stats)     [ Closure: keep/retarget/delete ]
  • Uploading or downloadingDownload  (links · history · stats)     [ Closure: keep/retarget/delete ]

Between 2002 and 2013, there was an article called "Uploading and downloading." In 2013, the article was deleted and the content was split between the articles for Upload and Download. Prior to the 2013 deletion, "uploading or downloading" targeted "uploading and downloading." The original target for both of these was download, but in the week following the deletion, an editor changed the target of "uploading and downloading" to upload (no explanation was given in the edit summary). I think that choosing either upload or download as a target over the other would be more confusing to readers than it would be helpful, so I think we should delete both these redirects. Notecardforfree (talk) 19:28, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the redirect to upload - I guess I did it because it was the first word in the sentence. Uploading and downloading contains the history and may not be deleted unless upload and download are deleted too. (but it can be moved, merge, etc.). However, I think the articles (upload/download) should be merged back to the original article (upload and download). Christian75 (talk) 19:47, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Christian75, I couldn't find a discussion about why the article was split back in 2013. It looks like an editor named Sejel may have made the decision unilaterally (and without discussing the split on the article's talk page), but I presume they wanted to avoid a WP:CONTENTFORK with the existing articles for upload and download. However, it looks like they haven't edited on Wikipedia since 2013. If you think the best course of action is merging the articles for upload and download, then I am fine with that too. -- Notecardforfree (talk) 19:58, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:XY. While we usually keep redirects resulting from page moves, this is a good example of a harmful result which should be deleted, because "X and Y" type titles might equally refer to two different targets. If the articles happen to be merged later then it will probably live at one of these titles anyway; that possibility is not relevant to the current situation. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 02:21, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. As Christian75 pointed out, Uploading and downloading was split into Upload and Download, so thus the article has history that doesn't necessarily pertain to the current title, so something may have to be fixed there per WP:CWW. And, by the way, Notecardforfree, thanks for nominating these redirects: I meant to nominate them a while back when I disambiguated the links to Uploading and downloading back in October, but it must have spaced my mind. Steel1943 (talk) 03:42, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, I weak oppose the article being restored. The terms "upload" and "download" have specifically different meanings when used as nouns, so thus, grouping them together as so could confuse readers. I may be able to support the restoration, but only if the article received a new name; "Uploading and downloading" is too genetic. A term that could encapsulate the scope of the article would need to be determined. Steel1943 (talk) 15:29, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, I oppose retargetting to File transfer or Data transmission since the nominated term does not have a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT target; as I stated in a previous comment in my comment thread, the terms are ambiguous when grouped together as such due to their noun forms having multiple meanings. Steel1943 (talk) 12:08, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Data transmission is primary target based on the definitions in the article, but "upload" and "download" are not mentioned there. Peter James (talk) 12:33, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep and Restore to this version, with detailed separate articles of each action. The very visible commons:Template:BadJPEG links to the Wikipedia article uploading and downloading, which currently shows a redirect. The original link seems to have been meant for new users to learn the concepts of uploading and downloading.
Ivanvector, if that unilateral decision is accurate, then I support fully restoring the article. -Mardus /talk 10:14, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It wouldn't bother me if the article were restored either. Having the two separate is a bit redundant, since downloading is just uploading in the other direction. However that's really a separate discussion from what to do with the redirect. Propose merging downloading into uploading, and then move it back to this title? Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 14:35, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to File transfer or data transmission, since uploading/downloading is the transfer of data files -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 10:56, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • History merge - Christian75 and Mardus make a good point: the content was cut-and-paste moved to the new titles, and the history is at uploading and downloading. Regardless of what we do with the redirect, that history needs to be merged with one of the articles. I say uploading because the last revision before the split contained more information on uploading, although there's not much other than dictionary definitions either then or now. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 14:35, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Since the article covered both, we can just add attribution templates {{copied}} or {{split-to}} to the talk pages of uploading and downloading. That way we do not bias the location of the contributions, as long as the redirect exists. If the redirects point to "file transfer" that would solve the problem of the existence of the redirect (and a hatnote can be added to the top to point to d/l-ing and u/l-ing specifically. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 06:34, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was delete. Although only the last few opinions favour deletion, the discussion has clearly shown that the colloquial phrase "turn-offs" can mean many different concepts that are covered by Wikipedia, so deletion is the appropriate outcome. Deryck C. 11:04, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I propose retargeting this to sexual arousal, which is the current target of turn-on and turn-ons. -- Notecardforfree (talk) 19:05, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mardus, that's a good point, but there is not yet an article for the topic of turn-offs, unless it's the Dislike article, which redirects to Disgust, and there is currently no better redirect target. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 19:24, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just moved this to Perungarai. The suffix appears to be a corruption of the name of another village, upon which we have an article, Vadakkumangudi. Does not appear to be a plausible redirect and since the article was recently created, it is orphaned. I don't see any reason to retain this. Safiel (talk) 16:03, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget most likely to be Chris Brown, primary topic and entertainer (which is likely to refer to someone such as Chris Brown who is notable not just as a musician). Peter James (talk) 01:07, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget per nom. If he's the primary topic for the base name, he's also the primary topic for disambiguated versions. You could make an argument for a title like Chris Brown (actor), since he's not primarily known for being an actor (cf. discussion for Michael Jordan (actor)). The result of the discussion was delete all except those still mentioned on target page. ("Ate my balls" was already deleted by RHaworth.) Deryck C. 23:43, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion

All of the above used to be articles, but were merged to the target (in most cases after AfDs which concluded that these should not be standalone articles). However, the target now lists only memes/phenomena with their own articles since User:Tavix pruned it down back in August, and these aren't discussed elsewhere in Wikipedia either. Does the edit history for these need to be retained somewhere (not necessarily under the current titles) or can they be deleted outright? 210.6.254.106 (talk) 08:25, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Fuck her right in the pussy and FHRITP, as that entry is on the target list. Delete the others, unless content on them is added or we find out a way to soft redirect to Know Your Meme. For my money, "Thanks Obama" and the dancing banana (if that's the "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" one) should be on the list; if any of these are added to the list, I support keeping the redirects. But for any instance where we have a redirect and no content, keeping will only mislead and disappoint readers. Please think of them first. --BDD (talk) 17:25, 3 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment is it a title (i.e. Al-Hajji) or his actual given name that just happens to be derived from a title? He seems to be the only one using this exact spelling, though we also have a bunch of West African "Elhadj"s and one Elhadji (see Special:PrefixIndex/Elhadj). A bit like the RFD on Kayte from last month, I guess. 210.6.254.106 (talk) 07:41, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I found this book [2] which names an Ottoman person, suggesting this is related to the Muslim title.Legacypac (talk) 08:22, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Arabic names frustrate me because they can be transliterated literally dozens of ways. A search shows Soccerway reporting it as a first name: "El Hadji," which is also the dominant non-Wiki spelling I saw. I couldn't find any reliable info on the guy. He'd fail WP:GNG even though he's technically notable because he played for a fully professional league. I doubt someone searching "Elhadjy" without a qualifier would be looking for this guy, so I would support a retarget to Hajji, as an alternative transliteration. -- Tavix (talk) 17:28, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of noming the target for deletion too... would it get past an AfD? Legacypac (talk) 20:49, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
He'd probably survive an AFD. The relevant guideline is WP:NFOOTY: Players who have played in a fully professional league will generally be regarded as notable. -- Tavix (talk) 06:05, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Middle Last name by Neelix Legacypac (talk) 06:46, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Appears to be a surname, and sometimes hyphenated. fr:Liste des députés béninois de la Ve législature mentions "Tidjani Serpos Ismaël" which may be the same person, that list puts the surnames first. Peter James (talk) 09:44, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Both are very short stubs. Redirect the article to the list of politicians they are on. Legacypac (talk) 10:03, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Set-indexify {{surname}} per Peter James. A redirect to the list of politicians is likely to confuse readers as to why they're ending up there; even more confusing if any other articles about people by this name get created in the future (judging from Google this is a reasonably widespread surname; not sure if all its holders are related or what, I know very little about West African names). 210.6.254.106 (talk) 05:05, 1 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep three Wikipedia articles about people by this name; drafted a {{given name}} set index under the redirect. 210.6.254.106 (talk) 07:35, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Ah yeah, as Tavix points out, my !vote was technically Set-indexify not "keep". 210.6.254.106 (talk) 05:06, 1 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Middle last name combination by Neelix. Maybe G6 Housekeeping? Legacypac (talk) 06:38, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - no valid reason given for deletion. Many African people can be known by their middle name as well as first name, sometimes they are mixed up in sources due to local naming conventions. Seems a legitimate redirect. GiantSnowman 20:17, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • That may or may not be a standard we want to generally allow, in the sense that we allow redirects "First Matronymic" to Hispanic names "First Patronymic Matronymic" because they're likely search terms in English. But if you want an example of this African confusion, see John Obi Mikel, where it looks like we can agree that "John" isn't his surname, but that's about all. I might suggest a low bar for such names, such as one instance in a decent (i.e., conventionally reliable or commonly consulted) source. I don't think I'd support just assuming confusion. --BDD (talk) 15:38, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
