Non-free poster art being used in African-American culture#Dance and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

File has a non-free use rationale for "African-American culture", but there's nothing about nothing in that particular section which requires the use of a non-free image. The poster art itself is not the subject of any sourced commentary and the reader does not need to see the poster to understand the sentence "Groups such as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater have continued to contribute to the growth of this form." The context required by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking and usage is purely decorative. Moreover, there may be free equivalents available on Wikipedia Commons or which can be WP:NFCC#1 to show an example of this style of dancing, so there's no reason to use non-free content. Suggest remove from article.
File has no non-free use rationale for "Alvin Ailey American dance Theater" and from it's history it never looks as if it did. It makes more sense on the surface to use the file in the article about the theater, perhaps at the top of the article switching places with the freely licensed photo of the building. Otherwise, the poster itself will need to be the subject of sourced commentary later in the article to satisfy NFCC#8. Regardless, without a rationale, the file's usage doesn't satisfy WP:NFCC#10c. If a valid rationale can be written for the top of the article, then I suggest keep for "Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater". If not, then then file should be removed from this article as well.

This is also being discussed at WT:NFCC#File:Lithuanian-Football-Federation-logo.png, and as I posted there, I feel the usage in Lithuanian Football Federation is NFCC-compliant, but that the usage in the individual team articles is not. The non-free rationale currently provided for the file should be edited so that it's current usage in the aforementioned federation's article is listed for the |article= parameter; otherwsie the file could be tagged for speedy deletion per Template:Di-missing article links because of WP:NFCC#10c. This is a simple fix and I will do it if there are no objections. The only way, at least in my opinion, that the file could be used in the team articles would be if it were freely licensed. Is it it possible for this to be converted to public domain per Template:PD-LT-exempt? Other than that and the perhaps the LFF agreeing to freely license the logo, I do not see how non-free in the individual team articles complies with WP:NFCC. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:13, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use rationales added for every article. According to Template:PD-LT-exempt articles 22 and 24, this logo can be used as long as the source and the author is mentioned. The main question remains – can this logo be used for teams? I know it fails WP:NFC#UUI #17, but looks like Lithuania is one of the countries that have copyright relations with the United States, so it should mean that it can be used? – Sabbatino (talk) 12:32, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If the file can be converted to free license, then it would not be subject to Wikipedia's non-free content policy and it would not need a non-free use rationale for each use. The question is whether it can be converted to a free license. Maybe you should try asking on Wikimedia Commons at c:COM:VP/C. If Commons will feels the license can be converted to PD, then there should be no problem moving the image there. Their author, the late mbeychok, was the author of a couple of notable textbooks in chemical engineering (they have articles here). I presume that this was produced as part of those articles. This image is currently detached (should be re-attached) from its article Colossal_Cave_Adventure. The article includes further details about the image's originating source. The originating source is computer code "Crowther W., Woods D., PDP-10 FORTRAN source code adv350-pdp10.tar.gz" published in 1977 in the United States with no copyright notice. What's the difference? For a 6000 pixel wide diagram there is no appreciable quality difference between JPG or PNG (and MediaWiki thumbnailing of PNGs still sucks). There is a slight difference in the height of the logo positioning. Which is the more accurate, keep that one. If we don't know which is more accurate, keep both. If you zoom in, you will also see that there are minor differences in line thickness, and there are white/grey/black colour differences around the floor. I was the uploader a dozen years ago and have little recollection of why I did so. I guess I just assumed that it was PD because it looked old enough. This same plate appears in American Book-Plates - A Guide to their Study with Examples, By Charles Dexter Allen. 1894, (Project Gutenberg, Image). Comment – HAARP has been mostly inactive for the past several years. When it was more active, it was operated in part by the U.S. Air Force. I'm not saying that this makes it a US-PD work, but that's something worth exploring. As for project scope, just about every time I do any work on Commons, I see hundreds/thousands more uploads from a few particular U.S. military and other US-PD sources which really aren't that useful for much of anything beyond making Commons out to be another government propaganda site rather than any kind of resource.
