Check out the page for Mateusz Morawiecki. There has been an edit war between a Pole and several editors who are Jewish/Isrseli. There was a part where a user decided for no reason to list the PM's comments talking about Jewish perpetrators of the Holocaust (which there obviously were) and listed this as somehow controversial when it isn't. When another user reverted it, the guy reverted it back and locked the page. The claim is from a Jewish perspective and whitewashes Jewish complicity by claiming that the Prime Ministers words were somehow shocking when in reality there is noting factually wrong with what he stated as there were Jewish groups who assisted the Nazis like Sonderkommando, Group 13, Zagiew, etc.. When the edit got reverted, the user decided to added Netanyahu's comments and response as if it actually has any meaning where it just reinforces a Jewish perspective attempting to deny they had any role. The user also reverted a claim where the PM Morwaiecki visited the grave of a group that assisted the Nazis when the only source there to back up his claim is from not even a legitimate source, YNET. Hi, I saw that you had deleted my addition of sibling nicknames on the Marie Curie^[1] page, and wanted to explain why I put them back in. You had said their inclusion was "pointless and inaccurate," but in doing research for a book project, my daughter kept finding reference to the sister "Bronya." When looking at the Wikipedia page she noted that there was no Bronya, only Bronislawa, and this became fuel for her to rant about, "See, you can't trust Wikipedia!" My contention was that if something was missing or unclear in Wikipedia, we could help fix it. So we did further research, and came up with what I feel is a fairly credible source for the family nicknames. In addition, the mother and sister having the same name leads to potential confusion, so it seems there are several points to be made with their inclusion. I'm not sure how you determined that they were inaccurate, but I'm open to hearing more about that.

I'm a fairly new editor, though, and I appreciate your diligence and willingness to help me understand if I've done something inappropriate, and don't hesitate to let me know if there is a better way to go about some aspect of this. Footleg (talk) 19:23, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The daughter's nickname was "Bronia", not "Bronya". The son's nickname was "Józio", not "Jozio".

The authors who include these nicknames are patronizing the Polish-language-ignorant. Would you refer to "Georgie Washington" or to "Tommy Jefferson"?

I take your point about Georgie and Tommy, and I would certainly include myself among the "Polish-language-ignorant," but are you saying that the various sources that use "Bronya" or "Bronia" are not authoritative because they are patronizing? I guess I don't see the problem of including the nicknames if that's what they were called and if there is confusion out in the world. The best source that we found (that I cited on the Marie Curie page, but am having trouble including here), lists her given name as, "Marja," and that she, "went by Manya, Manyusya, and Anciupeccio." Later it goes on to say that when she registered at the university in Paris, she put "Marie...(but)...everyone who knew her forever called her Manya." ^[2] All of this makes me wonder if it is appropriate for the article to refer to her as "Maria" as much as it does in the "Early Years."Footleg (talk) 02:14, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've corrected the spelling from the unaccountably russified "Bronya" to the authentic Polish Bronia.

Maria Skłodowska's given name is spelled Maria, not "Marja".

A diminutive for Maria is Mania, spelled with an "i", not a "y".

Maniusia is simply a diminutive of Mania. (Polish abounds in diminutives.)

Anciupecio [1] is a nonspecific pet name, something like "Snooky Ookums" [2].

The nickname for Maria's mother Bronisława would also likely have been Bronia.

The nickname for Maria's father Władysław would likely have been Władek.

Thank You for Your input and contribution on subject. However, before changing anthing, I would appreciate if You consult this on "Talk" page. Polish Clans are a bit different but still, they are concidered as Clans. Polish Clans are not just "heraldic families" or families that use same CoA. Those clans have specific identity that do back to XII century or much earlier before any CoA have been used. Primary, "Ostoja" was used as a battle Cry for military unit so it have nothing to do with heraldry. Also, note definition "Clan" on Wiki and note about Poland and Clan, futhermore in Polish Wiki definition "Klan" - Klan (celt. clan) – ród spokrewnionych lub spowinowaconych ze sobą osób lub też związek osób wspierających się i mających wspólne interesy. Therefore, I kindly ask You to undo renaming the art. and change back as it was before. Correct art. name should be "Clan of Ostoja" and nothing more. Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.

Hi Nihil novi, I see you have reverted some recent changes to Nicolaus Copernicus:

1. I don't have a problem with you re-adding the category "Category:People of the Polish–Teutonic War (1519–21)" (which I didn't remove) but...
2. Why re-add the unsupported "religion" parameter to the Infobox scientist? If you have that parameter you will get a message:
    "Warning: Page using Template:Infobox scientist with unknown parameter "religion" (this message is shown only in preview).".
3. Why remove "Johannes Kepler" as a value for the "influenced =" parameter in the same Infobox? Reading the Kepler article will show that Copernicus was definitely an influence.
4. Why remove references to 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica? There are several statements in the Copernicus article which do not have any references e.g. "In 1489 Watzenrode was elected Bishop of Warmia (Ermeland, Ermland)..." and "He met the famous astronomer Domenico Maria Novara da Ferrara..." to which I added a reference. The EB1911 is a reliable source.

Short answer: Your edits added nothing useful.

More specifically:

No need to specify "fresh" water, as opposed to brackish water or salt water. That is understood without explicit statement.

Saying that "Humanity's history starts with its prehistory", as you do, is illogical: Prehistory clearly precedes history; it doesn't start history.

Again, that "The history of the world (or world history) describes the history of all humanity", goes without saying, and so there is no need to say it, which you do.

Historic records include records from all the fields that you specify (archaeology, anthropology, genetics, linguistics), as well as a few thousand other fields and subfields of scholarship. Therefore, again, no need to select the 4 that you happen to specify.

Please consider contributing germane information to this and other Wikipedia articles.

My response:

1) Specification of “fresh” water adds precision and accuracy, so is valuable. You personally may be highly attuned to water quality issues, but many readers – especially younger readers – are oblivious.

2) “History” in this article means the aggregate of past events involving humanity. This aggregate includes everything human. Nothing human precedes it. Prehistory, despite the name, does not precede human history. It is part of human history – the earliest part. This is consistent with Wikipedia’s Prehistory article.

3) I’ll concede your point regarding the redundancy of “all humanity,” but the opening sentence has several problems, and needs work:

a. “World History” should not be listed as a synonym for “History of the World,” because, on Wikipedia, World History has a different meaning.

b. The History of the World is the aggregate of past events involving humanity. By themselves, the events do not “describe” anything. Authors describe the events, but that is the province of History, not History of the World.

c. Similarly, the events are not “based on” archaeology or other disciplines. The events can be studied by these disciplines, but are not “based on” them.

d. Archaeology is not the only discipline associated with historical research. My edit said “many” disciplines, and mentioned a few specific ones. I chose anthropology, genetics, and linguistics because they are mentioned later in the article. I think it is valuable in the lede to give readers – especially readers new to the subject – a sense of the breadth of knowledge that contributes to the understanding of our past.

4) “Historic records” (or “written records”) in this context refers to primary sources written around the time being studied, not to writings by later authors.

5) Wikipedia edits are not only for adding “germane information,” but also for improvements to form, style, and readability. Many of your own edits fall into this latter category.

I also wrote a book with what I thought an original theory on historic recurrence. As yet unpublished. Then I heard about, and read, Ibn Khaldun, and realised he'd arrived at similar conclusions 640 years earlier. Brief summary is at www.terror-rhythm.blogspot.com if you're interested to know more. Even briefer summary at my first Wikipedia page, 'political midlife crisis', which I think is still awaiting review and approval.

Was your 6 September 2017 "Historic recurrence" contribution, listing 20-year intervals for warlike episodes, based on your own observations, or on a published source? (The absence of the latter would, prima facie, explain its having been deleted. On Wikipedia, "original research" is the original sin!)

A 20-year interval between wars makes sense. It takes about that long to bring up a new gullible generation that, in some cases, is actually enthusiastic about experiencing war: how else can one indulge in murder, mayhem, pillage, and rape—and be awarded medals for it?

If you are not already an academically certified historian, and if you can afford the expenses, you might consider history as an academic career. Then, when you publish, you can pseudonymously enter your ideas into Wikipedia!

I've read your "www.terror-rhythm.blogspot.com" (I couldn't find 'political midlife crisis' on Wikipedia). I think that, like Ibn Khaldun and commentators on historic cycles since antiquity, you've given much thought to these phenomena; and you are seeing deep below the superficial contemporary layer that nearly everyone dwells in. Something that has struck me, in reading history, is that all countries, including currently small ones, seem to go through similar cycles of expansion, as far as they can, before they get clobbered over the head and lose some of their megalomania. Big empires age till they explode like a supernova; small empires collapse in on themselves as white dwarves. There is much more, at every level of observation and analogy, that could be said of these historic processes... The predictability of the processes is terrifying, and it is hard to close one's eyes to them because they ineluctably threaten each and every one of us.

On the earlier settings before I adjusted them, the images showed as gigantic on the page.

This seems to be a systemic problem: image size apparently depends on individual computer settings.

I likewise like to see images without having to click on them; but maybe neutral, non-"px" settings are a solution, after all—or just provide the "px's" and let the images be too small or too large?

Please recognize that almost all collaborating Jews of the time, as well as their victims, were Polish nationals. Most Jewish collaborators were well integrated into the Polish society. The State of Israel didn't exist at the time. These are crucial points to realize and remember in light of the latest Polish-Israeli dispute. I'm sure you know what this turmoil is all about, right? Hello, I've see your edits and must say I'm impressed. You are doing a good job editing articles regarding Poland's good name. I'm not as experienced in Wikipedia as you are so may I ask you for some help?

There was a massacre during World War II known as the Naliboki massacre where's Soviet and Jewish partisans aided in the killing of Poles. The page itself mentions the Jewish collaborators and it is sourced from a Holocaust memorial site as well as an additional source. Several users keep trying to edit war and undo the mention of Jewish perpetrators such as יניב הורון or Beyond My Ken. Can you help report them somehow? I don't know the mechanics of how things here work. I have warned them on their talk pages yet despite this they continue to vandalize the article. Sorry, I'm not sure how you can argue for your changes to the original text, and say they are "better English"... honestly, some of the changes you made come across as vandalism, for example:

"Shortly after the completed German invasion of Poland" instead of "Shortly after the German invasion of Poland" — what is the point of adding the word "completed"?? It's redundant because the word "after" also implies the END of the invasion.

"the Germans ordered pre-war low-level Polish functionaries and the Polish police (the "Blue Police"), under penalty of death, to get back to work, now for the occupying Germans" — how many times are you going to use the word "Germans" in just one sentence? Also, how about "mobilization" instead of "to get back to work" and what's the point of having the word "now"... sounds redundant because the IMMEDIACY of the action is also implied in the word "ordered".

"Invasion" can be understood as the beginning of an invasion; the Germans proceeded with various measures, such as activating the Polish police under their supervision, after their invasion had been completed. I notice your revert of my edit here and invite you to reconsider. Those entries provide nothing of interest to the reader, as they are all already mentioned in the "Literature" section above. They therefore tell us nothing beyond that those particular works have also been made into films. Of course, both a work of literature and its film adaptation may be listed, but only if the film importantly elaborates on its source material, which does not seem to be the case with any of the entries here. You may not agree with my content removal, but surely removing information which is effectively stated twice is at least not "incomprehensible".

I understand the Polish need to propagandize against USSR/Russia at every opportunity, but in an article on a famous animal? I quote,

"In the spring of 1942 the newly formed Anders' Army left the Soviet Union for Iran, accompanied by thousands of Polish civilians who had been deported to the Gulag camps following the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939"

This is provable baloney, as there were never any Soviet Gulag camps is Iran and neither there is a point for Polish civilians released from such to participate in invasion of Iran for some reason other than being an Anders' Army volunteer, i.e. no longer a civilian. The article on the more relevant to the topic (than the invasion of Poland) is

You have a complete muddle. Anders' Polish army was formed in the Soviet Union after Hitler attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, and was evacuated from the Soviet Union, via Iran to the Middle East, to reinforce British forces there. Evacuated together with Anders' army were thousands of Polish civilians who had been deported from Poland to the Soviet Union after the Soviet invasion of eastern Poland that began on 17 September 1939.

Anders' army did not "invade" Iran, much less together with Soviet forces. Please read up on the history.

Basically, my view is that, given that the structural constraints of the article mean we have to summarize the entire 21st century in just a few paragraphs, only the very top defining trends and events of global (not merely national) prominence can be included, and even then only briefly. I also think it's extra important that that section maintain neutral language, as there is necessarily some element of ideology in determining history at a grand scale, but in keeping with Wikipedia's ideals, we need to strive for as neutral a point of view as possible, and to not let the issues we might be passionate about distort proportional coverage.

On a more parochial level, it'd be helpful to the collaborative editing process if you could propose potentially controversial edits to the section to the talk page and obtain consensus for them before implementing them, and if you could start using edit summaries to let others know what changes you are making. Jacek Dukaj appears to have followed a couple of approaches alternative to translation stricto sensu (he himself calls his Polish rendering of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness a "Polonization" rather than a "translation"): his appears to be 1. an "adapted translation"; 2. a "modern translation" (a rendering into present-day language). Which is well and good (in all the arts, people have been adapting entire works of predecessors, or at least stealing motifs from them), so long as he in fact does not claim that his version is actually a "translation".

If my sense of the Polish language is accurate, Conrad's niece Aniela Zagórska was probably right in rendering the title "Heart of Darkness" paraphrastically as "Jądro ciemności" rather than metaphrastically ("literally") as "Serce ciemności". Conrad uses "heart" here in a geographical sense (the Congo lying roughly in the "heart" of Africa) as well as in a sense that is, I think, approximated by the Polish "sedno", as in "sedno sprawy" ("the heart of the matter").

Dukaj would like, as much as possible, to do away with words, to get at direct experience. This is attempted by films; but what film cannot do, generally, is present abstractions, which are a forte of written language.

On a different subject: I have a mnemonic for you: "though" ("choć") vs. "through" ("przez").

I trust you are picking up some of the local language and culture: an invaluable experience, as Poland was for me! This kind of exposure transforms a person into an inter-cultural with improved binocular vision—as it did Conrad.

Hi Nihil Novi, just wanted to also raise one other issue with Grabovski's figures, taken directly from his book on pages 2-3 [8]. Grabowski writes, "Given the numbers above one can assume that the number of victims of the Judenjagd could reach 200,000." As User:Spinney Hill writes, in this context either "a shambles" or "in a shambles" is correct.

I'm not sure why "in a shambles should be correct. I suppose it's a matter of idiom, analogously to "a mess" and "in a mess".

I would swear that I've seen the expression "in shambles", but I gather that sticklers consider it incorrect, probably because – despite the "s" ending – the word is considered to be singular rather than plural. (Presumably, "in shambles" might be correct if it referred to more than one shambles.)

In the last couple of years, I've encountered the adjective "shambolic", as used in British House of Commons debates. I had never come across it before, and it's not listed in any of my dictionaries, UK or US.

P.S. Please note the difference between "though" and "through".  :)

The Concise Oxford Dictionary 1990 Edition lists "Shambolic", giving the definition as "chaotic,unorganised." It says it is a colloquial adjective "after symbolic." Incidentally the same dictionary gives "shambles" as colloquial for "a mess or muddle" and also givees the original meaning of slaughterhouse and a scene of carnage. It also gives an example of the words use: "The room was a shambles." Thinking about it I'm not sure "in a shambles" is correct but like you with "in shambles" I think I have seen it in print. Also incidentally two shambles would be spelt the same way with an s on the end. Shamble without an s on the end means a walk "with a shuffling gait." @MyMoloboaccount: I copyedited what appeared to be your additions to that article. As far as I could tell from internal evidence (repetitions of information), you unaccountably and confusingly placed your sources before your quotations. In some items, you omitted to provide the pagination. And in the last item of information, you gave two page ranges for your source. I hope I did not misunderstand your strange techniques, and that you can provide paginations and straighten out those final odd page ranges.

Otherwise, it's very interesting information – and might shed light on some of the current disputes involving the "Stanisław Kot" and "paradisus Judaeorum" articles. @Piotrus:

Are you thinking of translating the Polish-Wikipedia article – or just its title?

The Polish-language genre arose as a ca. 1535 Polish translation of the original 1515 German-language chapbook recounting the adventures of the merry prankster Till Eulenspiegel.

According to Aleksander Brückner's Słownik etymologiczny języka polskiego, in my understanding the polonization of the character's surname (in German, formed from Eule, "owl" + Spiegel, "looking-glass", aka "mirror") to Sowizdrzał began as Sownociardłek (from sowa, "owl" + zwierciadło, "mirror"). But in the next, 1547 edition the overlong name was shortened to Sowizdrzał.

There were also early French and Czech translations of the German chapbook.

The character's outlandish German surname is derived by some scholar's from a play on words involving a scabrous German expression meaning, roughly, "Kiss my ass!"

So, how you would treat the Polish article's title, "Literatura sowizdrzalska", may depend on what you mean to do with it.

If you merely want to employ it adjectivally, you might consider "Eulenspiegelesque literature" (my neologism, so far as I know).

As I've mentioned, Prus' 1873 lecture anticipated by 50 years Florian Znaniecki's 1923 paper proposing the creation of a "science of knowledge" – what in a 1935 paper Maria Ossowska and Stanisław Ossowski would in English call, somewhat infelicitously, "the science of science". I understand that the latter 1935 paper, in English, made quite an impression in English-speaking academia.

I don't know whether there has been a joint review of these 3 papers. It occurs to me that the approaching hundredth anniversary of Znaniecki's paper, in 2023, might be an opportune moment for a note on the subject.

Prus' lecture is much shorter than Znaniecki's (which is some 80 pages long) and is more congenial to my own thinking.

Someone had inadvisedly moved part of the "Joseph Conrad" article as a separate article, "Joseph Conrad's career at sea". It would have been awkward to start the new article's lead with "Joseph Conrad's career at sea". It would have been equally awkward not to provide readers with a prominent indication of who the article was about; hence the placement of Conrad's name in boldface. Exceptional situations sometimes require exceptional solutions.

thank you for reviewing the improvements and specifications in the article about Frédéric Chopin. But I would like to ask you what were the reasons to remove them all.

1. I think it's quite relevant information whith whom Chopin lived together in Paris, as cited in the improvements he lived for years with Jan Matuszynski and Julian Fontana.

2. Why did you remove the caracterizing quotes from Chopins own hand, from his letters? Since they caracterize not only his style of writing but also his feelings and the relations between him and the addressees.

3. Why did you remove the pictures of personalities in Chopins live, which were obviously very important for him, as he writes himself in his letters. And as Fontana writes in his letters too.

4. That he wrote a waltz for Tytus Woyciechowski seems to be also quite relevant, if we see it in context with what he wrote about it in his letters.

5. As admitted by the Chopin Institue in Warsaw, there is no reliable proof at all for his "affairs" with Gladkowska or Wodzinska^[1][2][3], as cited. The citation linked to these stories are more than 20 years old.

6. That there has been a debate for decades about if Chopin was gay, this probably should be shown to readers of an encyclopedia, or not? Especially because there are many indications for it in his own letters. The readers of an encyclopedia should bee able to see all the discourses to be able to build their own opinion, shouldn't they?

About the Third Opinion request: The Third Opinion request has been removed (i.e. denied) because as stated in the 3O listing and mostly discussed above, this is a conduct issue not a content issue. 3O does not issue opinions on conduct issues. Many of the past five months' advocacies for including, in the "Chopin" article, homosexual or bisexual interpretations of Chopin's sexual orientation – nearly two centuries after his penning of a few letters containing a few passages of unclear import, sometimes mistranslated from the Polish into English – have been redolent of a poor-quality gossip column. Such speculative matter would not serve well the world's Wikipedia readers who expect solid, substantial, meaningful information on a subject – especially from a Featured Article.

Indeed, it is a question whether, for some years now, it should have been a featured article, having for example been tendentiously censored of even the mention (only belatedly restored by Smerus on 30 March 2021) of Chopin's first known love, the teen opera soprano Konstancja Gładkowska, whose singing is thought to have contributed to inspiring Chopin's invention of important musical devices in his compositions.

Similarly, if not quite as radically, downplayed (and a little less so since I myself restored previously deleted information) has been the second known love of Chopin's life, his fiancée Maria Wodzińska, the talented teen portraitist who, according to Tad Szulc, painted the best portrait we have of Chopin, besides Delacroix's portrait which Chopin hated.

In lieu of genuine, indubitable aspects of Chopin's love life, we have been offered ersatz speculations – whose own authors acknowledge to be speculations – about a few passages, in a teen's private correspondence, lacking in adequate context for establishing their import.

To which the answer is: Many believe that may be true.

Nihil novi, I have done a c/e that I hope addresses your question: [18]. You are right, I think that phrase was incorrect. Rereading his argument, I think he says there are two different versions of the proverb, Aramaic (about shekles) and Arabic (about silver and gold), perhaps sharing the same unknown ancestor (but that's just speculation). The Polish "obszlega", derived I assume from the German "Aufschlag" (which means, among other things, "facing (on coat)", "lapel (of coat)", "cuff (on sleeve)", "turn-up (on trousers)" – which appears in the title of Piotrus' illustration (File:Aufschlag 8e regiment.JPG) – in the relevant Polish meaning is "wyłogi (facings) u munduru (on a uniform)". In related contexts, "wyłóg" (the singular form of the plural, "wyłogi") may mean "lapel, lappet; reverse".

The Polish "pąsowy" ("bright red; crimson") is the adjective formed from "pąs" ("kolor jasnoczerwony", "bright-red color"), which derives from the French "ponceau" ("poppy-red").

In standard practice when writing English, an introductory phrase is followed by a comma only when the introductory phrase is long or when the comma is necessary to clarify the sentence's meaning.

The introductory phrases "In 1978" and "In 1975" are not long; nor does the absence of a comma, following them, cause confusion.

In such contexts, adding a comma can create a needless impression of choppiness. Especially if, farther along in the sentence, a comma does legitimately appear.

One of Wikipedia's style rules ("Wikipedia:Ignore all rules") recommends breaking a Wikipedia rule if that rule impedes the production of an informative and attractive text.

I just wish to forward some thoughts regarding spelling Polish Clans and remind You of discussions since 2016 where You started with renamed art. about Ostoja without any posting on talk page or asking for other interpretation - Your change was according to best Polish scholars in subject just ridiculous. In this discusion I backed from "Clan of XXX" to Clan XXX because of response from most skilled scholars in Poland on subject. They said that all three names (XXX Clan, Clan XXX or Clan of XXX) are good but "Clan XXX" was the best option. So there is no dispute about how to spell between us.

However, two years later, I see that all Polish Clans except Ostoja was spelled "Clan of XXX". I did not take part of this consensus. I was then forced to rename to "Clan of Ostoja" to meet consensus and it was approved, signed by Wiki administrator. Then, You tryed to change again on 31th of December 2020 and that was same day reverted by another editor because on consensus that You disregarded. Then again, You changed in June 2022.

Note that if there is consensus, You can not change as You wish, its against Wiki policy and its disruptive editing that could on WP:AN be subject of blocking You. Once consensus is done, You can not change anything without starting new WP:RM and new discussion on subject. Then, if we now agree on that "Clan of XXX" is better without "of" then we also need to change all the other spelling in the category and also change in all art. that relate to the category. I can not start to change anything since I have to respect consensus. We then need to start new discussion how to spell Polish Clans again and there, if You wish to bring it on, I would support Your input - write to Piotrus. If you tell me that You will do all the work with changing Clan names (also category) and all the art related (hundreds) then I can also participate in the discussion. After consensus, You can change. Thats the way to go. Alternative is WP:AN and that I waste my time on this. Life is short, we all should try to cooperate but you can never do that with people that do not respect others or consensus. I know this kind of people and I really try to avoid them but if necessary, I will find time to make it right. I then kindly ask you to stop disregarding consensus and follow the rules on Wikipedia. Thank you, User:Hugo999, but calling a cipher a "code" is a distortion that oversimplifies reality for people ignorant of cryptology. David Kahn, author of the encyclopedic The Codebreakers, explains in great detail the difference between ciphers and codes. He adopted the expression "codebreakers" as a kind of shorthand, to keep the title brief and simple.

However, sloppy use of the word "code" in recent years has led to its widespread inappropriate applications. Why needlessly proliferate this – often mercenarily motivated – disinformation?

There is no compelling necessity to call the Bletchley Park personnel "codebreakers", especially since what they mostly worked on were ciphers. They could readily be called cryptologists or – an unfavorite expression, to me, of William Friedman's – "cryptanalysts".

Another common confusion: a message's intended recipient "deciphers" or "decodes" it, as the case may be; a message's unintended recipient "decrypts" it.

I was impressed by two Scientific American articles by Marcus – which I listed in his Wikipedia biography, and have used as sources in other Wikipedia articles and in publications elsewhere.

I share his skepticism about the "intelligence" of "artificial intelligence". (I've read that the term was coined only to discourage Norbert Wiener from attending a planned computer workshop!).

My hobbies include translating and editing. That makes me a bit obsessive-compulsive about things that others might not bother about.

I find congenial, George Orwell's advice on writing, in "Politics and the English Language".

Something I have been doing on Wikipedia is breaking up overlong paragraphs, especially in leads, to make the contents more "bite-sized" and thus more assimilable.

By the way, in Marcus' biography is it (in regard to privacy and security) a good idea to give his complete birthdate?

Breaking up paragraphs isn't a bad idea. One thing I was planning to try, was to run my writing through the Hemingway app, to make sure it's clear and understandable to a large audience.

It seems all right to give exact dates for deceased persons, but I tend to be wary of giving them for living ones. However, I'm open to other views.

"Artificial intelligence" is a useful tool, but is reliant on data submitted to it. True Artificial General Intelligence does not seem an imminent prospect and, as some have remarked, might raise ethical questions: how cavalierly may we treat a seemingly sentient, if artificial, being? The "Gary Marcus" article would indeed be enhanced by adding more arguments about these questions.

I see two advantages to splitting excessively long paragraphs (especially in a lead): it makes it easier to physically track the text and not lose one's place at the end of a line; and it makes the text clearer when there is a change of topic.

To increase the likelihood that a text of mine will be clear to others (as Marcus points out, nearly anything we say or write can be ambiguous), I find it helpful to look back on it after a time: by then my text is less familiar to me, and I often catch a point of unclarity. Re-viewing the text can, of course, be done after publication, if the medium (such as an electronic one) permits corrections. Where clarity and precision are especially crucial, it can be helpful to show the text to another person for comment.

An arbitration case, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland, has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

• The Arbitration Committee formally requests that the Wikimedia Foundation develop and promulgate a white paper on the best practices for researchers and authors when writing about Wikipedians. The Committee requests that the white paper convey to researchers the principles of our movement and give specific recommendation for researchers on how to study and write about Wikipedians and their personal information in a way that respects our principles. Upon completion, we request that the white paper be distributed through the Foundation's research networks including email newsletters, social media accounts, and web publications such as the Diff blog.
  This request will be sent by the Arbitration Committee to Maggie Dennis, Vice President of Community Resilience & Sustainability with the understanding that the task may be delegated as appropriate.
• Remedy 5 of Antisemitism in Poland is superseded by the following restriction:
  All articles and edits in the topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland are subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction. When a source that is not an article in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, an academically focused book by a reputable publisher, and/or an article published by a reputable institution is removed from an article, no editor may reinstate the source without first obtaining consensus on the talk page of the article in question or consensus about the reliability of the source in a discussion at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard. Administrators may enforce this restriction with page protections, topic bans, or blocks; enforcement decisions should consider not merely the severity of the violation but the general disciplinary record of the editor in violation.

• Piotrus is reminded that while off-wiki communication is allowed in most circumstances, he has previously used off-wiki communication disruptively. He is reminded to be cautious about how and when to use off-wiki contact in the future, and to avoid future conflict, he should prioritize on-wiki communication.
• The Arbitration Committee affirms its January 2022 motion allowing editors to file for Arbitration enforcement at ARCA or Arbitration enforcement noticeboards. In recognition of the overlap of editor interest and activity between this topic area and Eastern Europe, the committee extends this provision to that topic area. It does so by adding the following text in Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Eastern Europe:
  As an alternative to Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement, editors may make enforcement requests directly to the Arbitration Committee at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification and Amendment.
• The Arbitration Committee separately rescinds the part of the January 2022 motion allowing transfer of a case from Arbitration Enforcement to ARCA, in recognition of the now-standard provision in Wikipedia:Contentious topics § Referrals from Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard to the full Committee. It does so by striking the following text in its entirety in item number 7:
  In addition to the usual processes, a consensus of administrators at AE may refer complex or intractable issues to the Arbitration Committee for resolution at ARCA, at which point the committee may resolve the request by motion or open a case to examine the issue.

• When considering sanctions against editors in the Eastern Europe topic area, uninvolved administrators should consider past sanctions and the findings of fact and remedies issued in this case.

Should any user subject to a restriction in this case violate that restriction, that user may be blocked for up to 1 year. Administrators placing blocks should take into account an editor's overall conduct and Arbitration history and seriously consider increasing the duration of blocks. Any block 3 months or longer should be reported for automatic review either (1) at ARCA or (2) to an arbitrator or clerk who will open a review at ARCA. The committee will consider presented evidence and statements before deciding by motion what, if any, actions are necessary, up to and including a site ban.

Having recently created an article on fictional religion (and fictional music), with fictional economy on my to do list, I wonder if fictional philosophy would be doable as well. My own preoccupation these days is with nonfiction (which the uninformed or excessively optimistic insist on calling fiction) such as global warming and climate change.

In any case, at present my health is severely limiting my time at the computer.
