Environmental racism in the United States

Hi, I saw you did the GA review for this article. I don't see the results of any criteria evaluation even though the article did not pass, I'm not sure if the template is broken or if there was another issue? EnPassant♟♙ (talk) 20:12, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Hey - not sure exactly what you mean. The review is visible on the talk page for me (here). I didn't actually make any review comments because the nominator (a WikiEd student editor) no longer appears to be active on Wikipedia, so I eventually closed the review as a fail. Ganesha811 (talk) 22:38, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
I see, thank you. EnPassant♟♙ (talk) 23:17, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Elizabeth Timothy GAN

Appreciate you picking up on this GAN review, however I won't be able to respond to it until the end of January 2022 at the earliest. I broke my arm and had surgery and am on the road to recovery. I have two other reviews backlogged and have to do those first, when I can. So, please take your time in doing the review. I can probably get to responding to the Timothy review at the end of January or first week in February 2022. Thanks. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 08:59, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Ok, that's no problem! I'll do the review and put it on hold until you can get around to responding. Best wishes for your recovery! I saw you nominated a few other printers/publishers too - would you object if I picked up and reviewed a few of those as well to add to the stack? Ganesha811 (talk) 13:21, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
No objection. Yes, go ahead and do some other printers/publishers and I will be glad to address those issues on those articles also - when I am capable. Once I get going I will be able to handle several reviews. If you are willing to put those on hold I will eventually solve all the issues on all the reviews you do. Thanks. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:53, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Lorraine Bracco

Hi, could you work this sorce or another into the article please? Particulary where it goes "Bracco traces her paternal lineage back to the Sicilian capital of Palermo", so the category:People of Sicilian descent can be added. I'm not so good at revising/grammar. Thank you - 21:44, 14 December 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:38FC:A300:FCF5:BBA1:D2CD:894F (talk)

Question from I.hate.spam.mail.here (05:35, 4 January 2022)

Hi,

Are images that are going to be used in forums (such as the Teahouse), but are not going to be used in encyclopedic articles okay on Wikipedia?

According to WP:NOTWEBHOST, files uploaded must be (or will be) used in encyclopedic articles or project pages. The page doesn't mention forums.

When I ask at the Teahouse, I copy in the text using a blockquote and a URL if needed instead of uploading a screenshot. So can I upload an image for use in a forum? --I.hate.spam.mail.here (This is YOUR page) (talk) 05:35, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

There are no firm rules and I don't think anyone polices that issue too actively, so if you needed an image in a discussion, I don't see why you couldn't upload it. But it would almost certainly be deleted eventually if it was never used in an article. What kinds of images are we talking about? I'm having a hard time imagining an image that is needed in a Teahouse discussion that is not being considered for inclusion in an article. Ganesha811 (talk) 13:53, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Skrishnamur1 on User:Skrishnamur1/sandbox (22:42, 13 January 2022)

Hi I am hoping to add an article about how business can support Neurodiversity. Is there anyone who can help? --Skrishnamur1 (talk) 22:42, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

  • Hello and welcome to Wikipedia, Skrishnamurl! Adding a new article to Wikipedia is one of the toughest things for a novice editor to take on. I would suggest you gain experience first by contributing to other articles. Why don't you add some sentences about neurodiversity in business (with sources) to the page on neurodiversity? Thank you and any tips before editing

Nice to meet you, Mentor! I'm new to editing wikis, although I've had many years of user experience. It's pretty cool to contribute to this online encyclopedia. Could you give some suggestions for starting? I tried some editing on some key world of my professional field, but many of them are canceled. I know some of them because of copyright or "refspam" (?). But where can I learn them in advance? Pai Wang (talk) 23:45, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

Honestly, the best way to learn is to do - just dive in. There are a lot of Wikipedia policies, but they all come back to the same foundation - the five pillars (WP:5P). Read that, and then start editing. The more you contribute, the more you'll learn. The basic idea is that material you add should be non-copyrighted and use a reference to a reliable source.
Occasionally, someone will come along and revert your edit. It happens to everyone, including me. Don't take it personally. Sometimes, you can start a good discussion from it and learn something - other times, it's just a drive-by. More often, you'll find Wikipedians happy to help a newbie. Cite your sources, avoid promotionalism, and contribute however it makes you happy. If you're looking for something specific, The Guild of Copyeditors (WP:GUILD) could always use folks willing to catch typos, or the Task Center (WP:TASK) has a bunch of good suggestions. If I'm understanding your field of interest right, you could also join WP:CHEMISTRY, the WikiProject dedicated to chemistry. Just make a new section at the talk page there and introduce yourself! But more than anything, do what you find interesting and engaging, whether that's adding stuff to articles on materials science, taking images of local landmarks for pictureless pages, or just fixing typos.
I'd be glad to keep on answering questions as you have them. Happy editing! Ganesha811 (talk) 00:06, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Faltero (01:21, 27 January 2022)

Hello my friend. I'm gradually getting a feel for how you guys seem to do things, but want to suggest a change to the John Cambell (youtuber) article and I think I've done it wrong. First I simply typed in this Semi-protected edit request on 25 January 2022 into the edits page and wrote my suggestion below. Today I found that there is a procedure for changes and I hadn't followed it. I found then found the "Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)" box and put them in. Nothing seemed to change. Can you tell if I’ve done right?

It's almost like it's my first week at a new job!! All I wanted to do was change two words I thought were unwarranted and somewhat offensive, and, frankly, unworthy of Wikipedia. As a retired English teacher I thought that would be uncontroversial, but they've been "commenting" about the guy's credentials, general character and motives now for two days and I’ve heard nothing back (obviously, because I did the request wrong) Apologies for any confusion and thanks in advance. --Faltero (talk) 01:21, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

@Faltero: I took a look at the section. Your suggested changes have simply sparked a discussion, that's all. That's normal for Wikipedia. One of our core principles is that consensus is key - so the discussion on the Talk page is simply a way of finding a consensus between multiple Wikipedians. Feel free to keep contributing in good faith. Once consensus is reached, someone can implement whatever changes are decided upon.
The best way to learn is to do - just dive in. There are a lot of Wikipedia policies, but they all come back to the same foundation - the five pillars (WP:5P). Read that, and then keep on editing. Thank you very much, deity of fortune and success and remover of obstacles... In fact my understanding of the issues raised in the article has improved a lot by reading the other people’s comments. Hi Ganesha811 Nothing's happened about my suggested change. It's not need declined or accepted. Faltero (talk) 11:15, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

@Faltero: reading over the talk page again, it seems as though discussion is ongoing. It seems that several other editors disagree with your perspective on the article. Question from Thammalama (03:40, 3 February 2022)

How do templates work? --Thammalama (talk) 03:40, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

@Thammalama: great question! A template is basically anything that's designed to be added to a ton of different Wikipedia pages but contain the same information on each one. So, for example, you could have a template that adds a box saying "This article needs updating because it has no sources" or a template that adds an infobox for a politician. You can find more information here, a list of common templates here, and ask questions about templates specifically here. Ganesha811 (talk) 04:15, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from CreatorJ (16:49, 12 February 2022)

Hi, i recently submitted a request to change my wikipedia name how long will it take to change? --CreatorJ (talk) 16:49, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

@CreatorJ Perhaps I can answer this question on behalf of @Ganesha811? I read this request you made and there are some problems I must mention. Firstly you made it at the wrong place, and a link was provided there to the correct page. Secondly, because you haven't actually made any edits with this account yet, my advice is simply to abandon it, lose the password so you aren't ever tempted to start using it again, and just create a new account with a better name. It saves everyone a lot of work if you do that.
But, even if you didn't, we would not accept the new name you wanted as it appears to be that of the subject you want to write an article about. That would be a bad move, as it would appear to be impersonating them. That could then lead to your account being 'soft-blocked' in order to protect the person you say you're writing about (and anyway they would have no rights or control over the page you might try to write about them)
Them, just as importantly, you use the term 'we', which suggests you are a company or group of people who have set this account up. If you know or represent 'Joey Nelson' you will have an Conflict of Interest you must declare, as well as declaring if you are undertaking Paid editing, and who is paying you to do that. Falling to do so could lead to an account being blocked for breaching our rules which demand a clear declaration of who someone is connected to. I hope this helps and that Ganesha811 doesn't mind me answering on their behalf as your mentor. Nick Moyes (talk) 16:00, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
No, no problem - that's a great answer, thanks Nick. Ganesha811 (talk) 16:25, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I had a good deal of content in my Sandbox. It appears to have been deleted. Is there a way to recover? --TrashPatch (talk) 21:12, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi @TrashPatch - pretty much everything on Wikipedia is saved, so we should be able to get it back one way or another. However, I only see one edit for you, so I assume this is material you added as an IP. Did you add it to Wikipedia:Sandbox? That's an open space where anyone can edit, and it does periodically get cleaned out. However, if you know or remember what IP address you edited under, you could go through that page's history (link) and find your contributions. Happy to help if you'd like. The "missing" desk has also been driving me crazy ever since I learned about it and I spent a number of fruitless hours trying to find out anything I could online, but nothing. So in the end, I figured, there was nothing to do but ask the people who might know best. I reached out to the George HW Bush Library and the White House Historical Association via email. The WHHA didn't get back to me, but the Bush Library did! Mr. Patton informed me via email that the desk remains in the collection of the White House.
The citation is a Chicago-style citation for a museum exhibit. Why? Because a bemused Mr. Patton informed me, when I asked about citing this information, that in addition to him just knowing it, it's mentioned in the museum, and he said "The Oval Office in the Bush Era." I'm not 100% sure whether that's a plaque, a room, a full exhibit, the replica Oval Office they have there... but it was good enough for me that it's somewhere in the museum and that he confirmed it.
I thought about whether this was WP:OR. In the end, I decided it's not. I'm not interpreting the source, synthesizing information from multiple sources, or even relying on a source document, really. It's not a self-published source either. All I did was dig up the (offline) place where the information exists in the unusually direct way of emailing someone who knows. The source is reliable, and the information is verifiable - even if in this case you would have to verify it by going to the museum in College Station! With all that said, I can understand why the whole thing is a little weird for Wikipedia, and I'd welcome your thoughts on it. Ganesha811 (talk) 11:20, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
Incredible. I also reached out to both the HW bush library and the White House Historical Association and all I ever got in response for either was to ask the other one about it. It is wonderful you managed to get a response! Your reasoning seems sound for for how it is referenced, but I wonder if there is a more sound reference. I will sift through flickr and google images to see if I can find an image of the wall text that this fact is supposedly on.--Found5dollar (talk) 18:18, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
I guess I just got lucky! The other option would be to ask Mr. Patton to get the information added to the Bush Library's website. I'll send him an email to that effect, but who knows if it'll happen. Ganesha811 (talk) 18:20, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Whip Gate

  • I see that the phrase "Whip Gate" still links to the renamed page when typed into the search bar. How long will this last? Not long, is my guess. And what of the five other Wikipidia pages that link to this article? There was no need for this change. Moreover, the change introduced problems that did not previously exist.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Ray.lowry (talkcontribs)

Earwig reads 54%. Reason? --Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:03, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Yup, I see that (FossPC link). I wrote the paragraph on Wikipedia and it looks like FossPC simply copied and pasted the 'Features' section wholesale into their article/guide. I don't think that page existed as of a few days ago. This is a case of Wikipedia content being reused elsewhere, not copyvio on our end. Ganesha811 (talk) 14:10, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
To confirm, if you 'View Source' on their page, the article:published_time value is "2022-04-27T05:44:15+00:00" - so it was published 4/27, or 6-7 days after that material was added to the Wiki page. Ganesha811 (talk) 14:17, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from SaminaHaji on Elaeagnus angustifolia (20:22, 29 April 2022)

Hi I want to add afghanistan to this description. As senjed (oleaster) is widely known in afghanistan and much loved by the people. Its especially grown throughout the country with different types and each region having its own reputation for it. Its especially grown in the province of logar. There are many types of oleater trees in afghanistan and each province as I mentioned has its own type. I have not seen senhed trees in Pakistan or have heard people know of them. I've spent quite a while in Pakistan through the country I've not seen the trees or hear the people speak of it. --SaminaHaji (talk) 20:22, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

That's great! Do you have any reliable sources (newspaper articles, books, etc) that talk about this? If there are, I'd be happy to add the information to the page or help you do it. Ganesha811 (talk) 20:26, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Cherielaurent007 on User:Cherielaurent007/sandbox (13:01, 9 May 2022)

Hello, I would like to get this page published for 'Cherie Laurent'. What do I need to do? --Cherielaurent007 (talk) 13:01, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello! I'm afraid that it doesn't look like Cherie Laurent meets our notability standard for people (see WP:NACTOR and WP:GNG). This means it wouldn't be possible to publish the page at this time. In addition, if you have a personal connection to Laurent (if you are her or a friend/business associate of hers), you are not permitted to create a page for her per our policy on conflicts-of-interest (WP:COIE). I understand this is probably not the answer you were hoping for, but I hope it made the issues with publishing this article clear. —Ganesha811 (talk) 13:14, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
