small things

  1. Google books. Generally my ETVP script adds | via = xxxx wherever it makes sense. Because google books is so commonplace for URLs in book citations, I don't see any need for | via = if the URL points to google books. But I won't remove it if it is already present.
  2. The point of ETVP is to make the wikitext easy to read (visually parse); normally this means a blank following list markup, but not for citations within biblio listings. Doing this helps to delimit the beginning and end of each template.
  3. Normally in ETVP, there is always a blank before a pipe. ETVP is a trade-off between white space for clarity and trying to keep the cite as short as possible, so I made a small exception for the first pipe after the template name, with the exception of cite journal. It's possible I might remove this exception, since it saves so little space.

Which reminds me – I really must get round to documenting ETVP properly so I don't have to type out explanations like this!

Bd Navy

Hello Cdjp1, I'm seeing multiple overlapping of insignias in Mobile (browser & app). For example, the sleeve insignia of Admiral is overlapped by shoulder insignia of Vice admiral, which is confusing. I hope you’ll understand & let me fix it. Litton123 (talk) 03:24, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Skjoldbro:, now seeing this issue in the android app for display, across all charts that use the two images with nobreak, so we will need to find a satisfactory solution that isn't just halving the image sizes. Cdjp1 (talk) 07:11, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The issue described here, is most likely because of the {{nobreak|}} used on many navy templates. This code was originally introduced so there is certainty that all shoulder boards are placed next to the sleeve rather than random placement, based on the length of the template at any given time, as you might remember (Example). This however, results in the images staying locked on phone, when there is a limited space. Skjoldbro (talk) 16:16, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rank templates

Hey

I have some things concerning the rank templates that I would like to get your thoughts on.

OF(D)

I have been annoyed some time, that I have been unable to locate anything in STANAG 2116 about the "OF(D)" and "Student officer". Mostly because, there is such a great variety between the officer cadet ranks and structures. For example, UK only has one rank, while Germany has three all of which have their own OR rank, Iran has four, Spain has six and the US has as many as 16! This creates some issues with the templates, where half the page is dedicated to cadet ranks, or in the case of the US, it just written "Various".

As far as I can tell, there is no mention in any STANAG 2116 edition, and the addition of OF(D), can be traced back to 7 September 2010, where a 2006 UK report on Women in the military was added in reference to page 6's mention of "OF(OD)", as an "Official NATO source". The designation makes sense when looking at the UK, since it only has a single cadet rank, but becomes an issue when other nations use a whole dedicated rank structure for their cadet ranks. This is of course also incorrect as "OF(OD)" doesn't exist within NATO.

OR ranks

As you have noticed, with especially the US, there is an increase in nations using various special NCO/enlisted appointments (not ranks). E.g. SEAC et al., which are, like OFD, filling up the templates with unique and to an extend incomparable insignia. According to STANAG 2116 of 1975: "Unusual ranks and grades which are virtually unique to a nation are to be excluded from the code system and explained by footnotes to the appropriate Annex."

Solution

Trawl through every single rank template and remove mentions of OFD and senior enlisted appointments (SEA), eventually also removing the OFD from the top bar.

OFD and SEA removed from the comparative rank templates can then be placed on the national rank page. If there is a known correlation to standard ranks, the removed ranks can be placed like Lithuanian Specialist ranks. If the ranks and appointments are outside the normal structure, they can be placed in separate tables like at Botswana. Going the Botswana-route will also allow for other appointments insignia to be added, such as band insignia etc.

It is a lot of work, and it is going to take a long time, which is why I wanted to hear your opinion on it, especially, since there aren’t that many other editors who work on the templates.

Best Skjoldbro (talk) 11:52, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Skjoldbro, before getting to your suggested solution, a similar solution is what I was forming from your points. I have already done similar for ranks that are variations on that standard ranks systems countries use for the NATO coding, such as with British army ORs. I am happy to proceed with your suggestion, with my only change being (if you support it), having something in the main template that provides a link to the correct article/article section detailing the Cadet/Student/Designate ranks. -- Cdjp1 (talk) 14:59, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I have seen the table for UK OR. Hmm, I'm a bit apprehensive about that, as I can't really see how you would go about doing it. What were you thinking? Skjoldbro (talk) 16:09, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As an example:
NATO code OF-10 OF-9 OF-8 OF-7 OF-6 OF-5 OF-4 OF-3 OF-2 OF-1 OF(D) Student officer
 United States Air Force[1]
[a]
General of the Air Force General Lieutenant general Major general Brigadier general Colonel Lieutenant colonel Major Captain First lieutenant Second lieutenant Cadet / Officer trainee
New version OF-10 OF-9 OF-8 OF-7 OF-6 OF-5 OF-4 OF-3 OF-2 OF-1
  1. ^ "U.S. Military Rank Insignia". defense.gov. Department of Defense. Retrieved 13 January 2022.
  1. ^ Various insignia are used dependent on the commissioning route:

-- Cdjp1 (talk) 17:01, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think you misunderstand. Seeing as all countries have a different number of cadet ranks, and especially seeing that "OF(D)" and "Student officer" are not ranks or codes within NATO, I am planning a complete removal of these two titles from the Template:Ranks and Insignia of NATO Armed Forces/OF/Blank and all related templates (result seen above). However, only after all mentions have been moved from rank templates to appropriate rank pages. Skjoldbro (talk) 19:54, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

"Formatting references" on Israel–Hamas war

Your edits on Israel–Hamas war to "format some of the references" not only caused the page to exceed the Post-expand include size (preventing templates on the page from showing correctly), but it also broke the calls to {{portal bar}} and {{authority control}} at the bottom (even after you re-added accidentally removed content). Please do not change the module invocations back to template calls without verifying that it doesn't break other things on the page. --Ahecht (TALK

Revert

the RAFAC are no longer known as the Air Training Corps and hasn't for a long time. Please remove your revert. Joddd334 (talk) 20:19, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Joddd334: I have been unable to find sources detailing this change, if you have sources please share them. -- Cdjp1 (talk) 21:13, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There was never a big announcement it was just a change that gradually happened. It became particularly prominent post CFC when the term "Air Training Corps" became less used and "RAF Air Cadets" became more common. RAF wanted to have their name in the organisation to show that they were sponsors of the corps Joddd334 (talk) 23:47, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joddd334: Without a reliable source stating the change as official, the article will remain in a state that is in line with our current reliable sources. And with your description it seems that it's not a change to the actual entities that has occurred and more so something members have just adopted in a linguistic shift. -- Cdjp1 (talk) 13:28, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
please find me sources thar say it is still the "ATC", when the RAF website doesn't state "ATC" anywhere. Joddd334 (talk) 13:30, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

from 2007. Show me anywhere on this website, https://www.raf.mod.uk/aircadets/cadets/being-a-cadet/, where lt says "Air Training Corps" or ATC? Joddd334 (talk) 08:16, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Robert McClenon. I noticed that you recently removed content from Tang Chia-kun without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. The use of draft space is usually not required. Copying a page from draft space to article space is discouraged but permitted, and so blanking it is not permitted. @Robert McClenon Hi Robert, the article was initially created and then moved to draft due to no citations and being a general stub, the original creator then ignored the draft and recreated the page in main space. The page requires a full review from draft and not just accepting the editor having bypassed the draft process. -- Cdjp1 (talk) 09:03, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Cdjp1 - I largely agree with you, that the biography of a living person does not appear to be ready for article space. However, Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and the originator has chosen to bypass the draft process, and the guideline is clear that an originator may bypass the draft review process, see objecting to draftification. When an originator has chosen to bypass draft review, the article is in article space. Your choices and mine include nominating the article for deletion, tagging the article, reducing the article to a stub, or expanding the article. I don't plan to nominate the article for deletion, and do not recommend that it be nominated for deletion, because it is my opinion that the subject is notable. There isn't a procedure for enforcing a review from draft over the objection of the originator (and moving the article from draft to article is a means of objecting), except in the case of authors with conflict of interest, which this does not appear to be. If you have any further questions about how other editors can deal with an article that is moved into article space without review, we can discuss at the Village Pump or the Articles for Creation talk page. Soviet POWs death toll

I see that you're a frequent editor of the list of genocides page, and regularly edit and also format sources. There's a discussion between me and another user on the page "German atrocities committed against Soviet prisoners of war", where the work of Peter Calvocoressi and Guy Wint estimating 3.5 million Soviet POWs dead has been labeled as being WP:FRINGE and non-academic, yet it is cited as the upper limit on "List of genocides". Also, the work of Russian historians Boris Sokolov and Viktor Zemskov has been labeled WP:FRINGE, so I would appreciate input on the matter. Reaper1945 (talk) 03:26, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nakba citation template edits

Hi, I don't understand what is the benefit of changing {harvnb |blah |blah} to {harvnb|blah|blah}, can you explain? Levivich (talk) 23:20, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your edit (again). Sorry, but changing (to take one example) {sfnm |Masalha |2012 |1pp=13 and 128 |2a1=Abu-Lughod |2a2=Sa'di |2y=2007 |2p=19} to {sfnm|Masalha|2012|1pp=13 and 128|2a1=Abu-Lughod|2a2=Sa'di|2y=2007|2p=19} makes the citation worse, not better. I'm not sure if this was just a mistake or an intentional change? Levivich (talk) 03:28, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
