Section about "Scandals"

In regards to the Hawaii Baptist Academy entry, you mentioned that to prevent warring between editors, we cannot edit a page after it's been reverted back and that a consensus should be reached between the editors. But how do you determine which editor is in the right? It's true that part of it is due to one's preferred version, but then there are times when two editors cannot come to an agreement. In that case, how is it determined whose version gets to be the one that stays? The fact that there is a source link provided doesn't mean the information included is appropriate. Especially for private high schools, how do we prevent someone with a grudge against the school from posting material (with source links) that may be partially true but nevertheless is inappropriate for inclusion? How do we prevent one person's point of view (in this case, including information about "scandals") from appearing on a page that would have consequences for that institution? Hawaii Baptist Academy is a private school in Hawaii with a good reputation. Unfortunately, it encountered a couple incidents that one person wanted to include in the Wikipedia page. Someone reading that page would come across this information -- information that frankly is not very relevant to the bigger picture of the school, its description, and its history -- and have their view of the school affected negatively. The bottom line is: Two editors have different preferred versions of what is posted. One editor wants to include a "Scandals" section; the other editor does not. Given that it is a small local school, I hope that we can rule on the side of giving that school the benefit of the doubt. In reading a past exchange about this page, the editor who wants to include the "Scandals" section is insistent on it. How do we go about taking it off if a consensus is not reached? Why does he/she get to keep what he/she included when there is a large group of people who thinks it should be removed? Please advise. HSMT2002 (talk) 23:26, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Gab4gab. I noticed that you recently used thefamouspeople.com as a source for biographical information in Lloyd V. Berkner High School. Chino Hills High School notable alumni

All of the people you added do have it mentioned that they attended the school in their profiles, but can you still please add sources in the school page.--Rockchalk717 02:56, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

@Rockchalk717: All of the names have sources confirming they are alumni cited in their articles. I don't think it's necessary to cite them again in the school article. Gab4gab (talk) 10:06, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Actually they don't. I went through most of them and the only sources verifying their attendance were dead links. So yes it is necessary. An example of a notable alumni section done right is Wichita South High School in Kansas.--Rockchalk717 15:50, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
@Rockchalk717: I went through all of them and made sure they had cited sources confirming they are alumni. So actually they do.

The Gregg School

@218.250.248.22:, I appreciate your efforts to improve The Gregg School. References to published sources are important. They are needed for verification. Often editors of school articles add details they know from their own experience or local knowledge only to have them removed because there are no reliable published sources backing them. Consider becoming a registered user. It can make communication easier if other editors know it is you and not someone else who happens to be using the same IP address. Richmont Graduate University

Thanks for your edits to theRichmont Graduate Universitypage. I have been trying over the past couple months to update the page as it was out of date and incorrect. I am the copyright owner and webmaster for richmont.edu and the content in question. I would be glad to take down the content in question and re-write the history section. Could you please remove the copyvio-revdel from the page. I am relatively new to Wikipedia and would appreciate your help. Scottiebburn (talk) 15:23, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

@Scottiebburn:, I understand and thank you for the improvements you've made. It's fine to re-add the history section content as long as it's re-worded so it's no longer a copyright violation. Regarding the copyvio-revdel: A Wikipedia administrator needs to do some cleanup in the article edit history. This may take several days, depending on the backlog. My understanding is that the visibility of the copyrighted material in the edit history (by previewing or selecting an older version to edit or read) is an issue. Only administrators have the authority to turn off that visibility. After they complete their task they will remove the template.
It's helpful that you have disclosed your association with Richmont Graduate University on you user page. I'll add a connected contributor template to the university articles talk page for you. Wikipedia has policies and guidance for editors who either have conflicts of interest or are being paid to edit. For example it's recommended that editors not edit articles about their own organization. I'll drop some text on your talk page about those topics for your review. It takes time get familiar with the various conventions and policies of Wikipedia. If you have questions feel free to ask me on my talk page or visit the Tea House where other editors offer friendly advice. Gab4gab (talk) 16:20, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

August 2018

Why do you keep removing Kent J. Thiry from the list? Just b/c something "normally" has an article does not mean it HAS to have an article. However, given there is no article, I can provide a reference that he attended Harvard Business School. It is not false information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timothymarcc (talkcontribs) 17:48, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

@Timothymarcc:, I remove the name because we only list people who are notable and an alumnus. A reference confirming he attended Harvard Business School satisfies one of two necessary elements. The generally accepted way to demonstrate notability is to have an article about the person. When a person doesn't have an article we normally remove the name unless there is some justification to make them an exception. So I keep doing the normal thing. Gab4gab (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Well, I just left the NYU Stern Business School Alumni page. It did not seem "normal" there.Timothymarcc (talk) 23:01, 15 August 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timothymarcc (talkcontribs) 22:58, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

@Timothymarcc:, If you take the time to step through the edit history for February and March of List of NYU Stern people you'll see that most of the red-link names or names not linked to an article were removed over time by editors with edit summaries saying they are non-notable. Certainly from time to time names are added that don't qualify and there are names, such as Deepen Shah, who once had an article that has been deleted. Gab4gab (talk) 14:35, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

WP:RFCN

Hello, Just wondering why you didn't report this to WP:UAA first, it seems pretty blanant. - FlightTime (open channel) 19:58, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

@FlightTime:Yes, it was certainly blatant. The guidance at UAA is to report there when it is both blatant and serious. (and not to report there if I'm also warning them) My thought was, assuming this is just an individual choosing a name poorly, they simply needed to change their user name. Looking at their edits they didn't appear to be promoting Northeastern University or causing other serious damage. Mostly adding content in a sandbox. So I warned them and waited a bit. Perhaps I'm not seeing a serious issue where others would. I do wonder if the warnings are very useful although... I think I've gotten at least one positive response. Gab4gab (talk) 20:28, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Understood, however WP:UAA should be the first stop before heading to WP:RFCN. Cheers, - FlightTime (open channel) 20:42, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
@FlightTime:, I think I'm following the instructions at UAA. If I'm not please explain where I'm going wrong. Or is my problem that I'm following the instuctions? Gab4gab (talk) 20:46, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
There's other opinions here maybe @Beeblebrox: would like to comment here. - FlightTime (open channel) 21:04, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
@FlightTime:, I see now that if I've warning a user about a blatant violation and then time passes without a username change I should go to UAA rather than RFCN. Gab4gab (talk) 21:14, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
  • (edit conflict)I think maybe we do need to tweak the language at WP:UAAI to reflect actual practice. In practice blocking is actually the tool of first resort for anyone using an obvious WP:ORGNAME. In a case like this where they are claiming (probably falsely) to be representing a real, well known institution we don’t need to see anything else to issue a block, if they’ve made even one edit, even if not related to the university in question, it merits at least a soft block. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:16, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

@Beeblebrox and FlightTime: Thanks for your patience and friendly advice in clearing this up for me. I was a bit confused by the instructions at UAA which I think I understand now. I'm fine with the approach to ORGNAME violations you've suggested. Gab4gab (talk) 23:42, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

You're very welcome. Thank you for what you do, happy editing. - FlightTime (open channel) 23:49, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Removal of Peter Godfrey-Smith from Australian National University people

Hi, the item removed from List of Australian National University people was an addition made by Philozoan, an editor with a past history of only adding/editing content praising Peter Godfrey-Smith across many articles (“famous philosopher”, “acclaimed author” of the “bestseller”, etc.) which don’t seem to be neutral or of good faith. At a bare minimum the reference to “bestseller” should be removed as it is unsubstantiated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.86.209.61 (talk) 04:08, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

@202.86.209.61: The alumni brief description is taken from the lead of Peter Godfrey-Smith. If you feel it's not supported by sources that would seem the place to start, although I have no objection to you removing "bestseller" from the description in List of Australian National University people. Article Cleanup

I appreciate your commitment to sourcing information and defending truth from dilettantes like myself, but I think flagging i.e. '(citation needed)' is better for the long term health and currentness of the Wikipedia ecosystem than outright removal of information. Those calls for citation invite the reader to healthily question the facts of the article, and to possibly contribute the necessary corroborating references. To simply remove material on the other hand keeps often correct and useful, if yet un-cited, information from the reader. Wikipedia currently relies on volunteers to contribute to this cultural ark, but the proliferation of difficult to write on phones and tablets is causing a decline in the diversity of voices that can easily contribute to articles within the constraints of their technology. If too many contributors' voices are immediately silenced by neat-nicks like yourself it stifles any interest in contributing further. That is unhealthy to the long term ecosystem. Much better to use the 'citation needed' type tools that call for further construction and verification of knowledge rather than its erasure. Thanks again for your volunteer work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.243.108.69 (talk) 23:46, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

On the other hand sometimes letting an editor know why their recent edit was not accepted prompts a quick fix. When it doesn't result in a quick fix then we have avoided presenting content to the reader which they cannot verify. While you may disagree the Wikipedia policy on verifiability states that "even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it." It's a judgement call whether to remove unverifiable content or add the citation needed tag. In this case three names were added to the list of notables. None of their biography articles mentioned the school. No references were provided. Looked like removal was appropriate to me. Easy for you to fix if you have the necessary sources. Let me know if you need help adding the citations. Gab4gab (talk) 15:34, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

King's College London

Hey, I just saw that you reverted my edit on King's College London. I absolutely agree with you that the short info I stated at the beginning of the lead appears later on in the lead section again in a more detailed manner. However, (this is my personal view) the entire lead section is quite long. I feel for those people who just only read the first two sentences or so with the first (and shortest/simplest) info part of an article, my added info would be good. I will therefore re-add my edit. Again, you are right, it is repetitive (or introductory) to the same info which follows more profoundly later on in the lead. I feel it's good if the info is stated shortly and in simple terms at the very beginning and those who are interested in the details can continue reading. Hi I looked at this page the other day and noticed that most of the Old Boys listed did not have an inline citation but one, Gary Carpenter, was flagged with "Citation Needed". I couldn't find any references to him but I knew that the entry was true because we started school the same day and graduated together 8 years later. Consequently I simply added the dates to make it easier for anyone to find the references. Meanwhile I was searching with the intention of completing that entry myself. I'm not sure that it was helpful for you to remove the dates.

Unfortunately Carpenter's music career really started after he left school although on one occasion he played one of his compositions to the whole school before morning assembly. In consequence his website starts with his further education which was specifically music based rather than the earlier mainstream education. Luckily there is a section in the Old Monovians website that lists him.

I am puzzled as to why this one person was flagged as needing a citation when so many others were accepted without question. OrewaTel (talk) 14:06, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for clarifying things for me. I can understand why personal recollections are not acceptable. It's not that my memory is not reliable but rather I could easily be lying. Anyway your removing the edit forced me to do things properly. So thanks once again. OrewaTel (talk) 00:35, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Diocesan Boys' School

Hi, I update the summary from time to time as I work at that school. Also, the results can be found at the organizer website http://www.hkssf-hk.org.hk/hk/sec/champion.htm which is archived into pdf files yearly Kyro2 (talk) 13:41, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

The organizer published a book named HKSSA 40th years of schools sports in 1991, but those data are not made available online. The book can be found in the city's central library Kyro2 (talk) 14:09, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

As this wasn't the first "joke" I blocked him for 31 hours. Then saw this and blocked for 72. Doug Weller talk 14:45, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

October 2019

Hi Gab4gab. It's Heliophysics. I understand the reason for removing Karen Aplin from the Denmark Road High School (lack of source). I'll see if I can dig up a citation later today. However, I'm confused why you left up the other 4 (of 5 total) Notable Former Students which also lack any citation? Seems a little inconsistent. Heliophysics (talk) 09:02, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Great - thanks!

Roundhay school

I will add references to my text, though many of them are from the school archives and therefore not independently verifiable e.g. staff lists. For now I have removed the old History section as, whilst is cites certain references, it is riddled with factual inaccuracies. JohnMattinson (talk) 19:39, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
