In the article on Jiro Taniguchi, the word "aruto" probably should be "aruku" ("to walk"). However, titles being titles, I can't be sure...

Thanks for the info. I just checked some ressources on the Web, and both I saw titles. I'll guess by your contributions that you are from Japan or at least have a good knowledge of japanese. So go up for your translation.

Hi Laurent,

The way I add Japanese is using Microsoft's IME. You can download it at no cost from microsoft.com and set it up to appear in the language bar. Then I select Japanese and Hiragana and type. Pressing the spacebar converts hiragana to natural Japanese (a mixture of kanji and kana).

Another way to get Japanese is to copy and paste from the Japanese Wikipedia.

Thanks for the spelling fix on Hankyuu. I tend to overlook them.

Chuka Soba, from what I think it means from your writing, refers to a varient of Ramen known as Gomokusoba, lit. five ingredients ramen (=soba). Gomokusoba is flavored with spices used in Chinese cuisines and things on top are stir-fried and thickened. It is served in a Chinese restaurant in Japan. It's probably an oddity in a particular restaurant you are familiar with. Revth 01:33, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointer to the Columbia site - it contains a number of useful items. I was planning on redoing the 47 Ronin page, taking into account the information provided in Hiroaki Sato's book (particularly the account of Okado Denpachirō, who was an official on duty the day Asano attacked Kira, and was present at many of the events of that day), and will include material from the Columbia too. Hi, thanks for the reply. Following up on the Columbia page you posted, I have contacted the author, Prof. Henry Smith, who it turns out I already had several books by! He is quite a scholar of the Ronin, and has given me a great deal of very useful information about them - which sources are best, etc. He is sending me a number of papers, etc, and I have ordered some books he recommended. You are the main author of the above article, so I'm dropping a note here. I have just reverted a long POV rant which was quoted in the article. It was placed there by 219.43.110.1 on Sept 3. Besides being POV, the quotation overwhelmed the article, indeed it became the article.

Yet obviously something more is needed about this tomb, either here or in its own article. Accordingly I've added two external links to the page. The links are just to the first reasonable discussions I found on the matter and there may be better ones. I did not add a link to the site from which the quotation was taken as I don't think it as helpful as the ones I did link to.

Hey, thanks for letting me know about the deletion of Route 128 station. Actually, as someone who has used that station many a time, I don't think it was a particularly well-written article. There was a lot that could be talked about (they just recently rebuilt the entire station from a stray platform to a very expensive new station). To me, the information seemed like it was all pulled raw from [www.mbta.com the MBTA] and re-organised. It was not a good article for deletion, but for re-organisation and expansion. I wasn't aware of any trend in Japanese city names, but standard Wikipedia convention is to use the simplest and most common name, unless there is a specific reason (eg, disambiguation) to do otherwise. I'm aware that US cities are often an exception, but that was by special agreement — I haven't noticed such an agreement for Japan, and can't find any mention of one at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (city names) or its associated talk pages. (The only mention I can find of Kyoto, Kyoto is a brief comment by another user calling it "ridiculous"). Is there a place where this has been discussed? And if so, what is the reason given for departing from Wikipedia convention? -- Vardion 22:10, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

On another note, I was looking through your photo album, great work! I was wondering, could you provide larger resolution versions of the following images, shot by you:

I would really like to nominate them for featured pictures, but the resolution of all your images is just a tad too low. In general, when uploading images, do not spare the Wikipedia disk space :) You can upload the highest resolution version you have, although it is a good idea to apply some resizing and JPEG compression (at least 80 quality) to get image size under 1 MB. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Than you for the compliment on the Kigo article. That leaf picture looks very nice, but it probably should be cropped so that is still recognizable in the thumbnail view in the article. I would like to find one picture per season. I'd love to find a good picture of some people in colorful costumes doing odori dancing during the Bon Festival, for example. It would great to find a good flea market picture too. The Univ. of California has a couple of good websites on native plants that I think are all public domain photos, so I'll also look to see if I can find some good wildflower pictures. re:Tanabata: What I had in my mind's eye is what I've seen at some the Japanese festivals here in the Los Angeles area—everybody in colorful Japanese costumes doing a sort of walking line-dance, usually in a big circle. BlankVerse ∅ 06:00, 5 May 2005 (UTC)

re:Lotus: I was thoroughly confused for awhile after I followed the Lotus link and then started doing some more checking. I was thinking that the lotus used for kigo was the sacred lotus plant of Hinduism and Buddhism (genus Nelumbo), but there is also a genus Lotus with this interestingly named variation Lotus corniculatus var.japonicus (see this link for a picture [1]). Before I had done that checking, I was all set to ask the guy who took the picture at this link if he would license it under the GFDL to be used by the Wikipedia, because to me it looks like a lotus flower you might write a haiku about [2]. Then the WHC World Kigo Database says that rengesoo 蓮華草 (milk vetch) is sometimes incorrectly translated as "lotus flower" [3]. Next from my internet search is [4] Lotus flower (Byakuren, Hasu no hana) summer kigo, Lotus digging (Hasuhori) and Withered lotus (Kare hasu) winter kigo. And from THE FIVE HUNDRED ESSENTIAL JAPANESE SEASON WORDS [5] lotus (hasu, late summer). The plant, tattered lotus (yarehasu, late autumn). withered lotus (karehasu, all winter). And one more internet source [6] 枯蓮 【かれはす】 kare-hasu, withered lotus(es) (all winter). 蓮枯る 【はすかる】 hasu karu, lotuses wither / lotus withers Finally, I plug in "lotus hasu" into the Google Image Search [7] to find out that it was your type of lotus all along. ;-) After all of that, I guess that I need to change to Lotus wikilink from the disambiguation page to the correct Lotus page. Municipalities in Japan have their own articles. Former provinces also have their own articles. Tsushima, Nagasaki should be an article. Tsushima Province should be a separate article. Parts of Tsushima Islands such as culture and history do not belong in the article on Tsushima Islands. They should be moved to the city article or to Tsushima Province. The article on Tsushima Islands should concentrate on the land, not the people or culture or history on it. Fg2 01:00, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

• The rough but maturing article Military needs a list of military forces particular to your country and any others you may be able to expand upon. At the moment, these lists at the bottom are extremely 'Anglo-centric' (USA + UK). Please pass this on to others you know in other countries after checking theirs hasn't been updated since I looked. I see that you have had a history of editing Japanese articals, and so I assume that you may know about this subject. Japanese clothing seems to contain only links to other articals, but at the top of the page it makes a refrence to itself as an artical. Also, it has a link to obi that leads to a disambiguation page. The only clothing related listing there is a belt worn on a kimono in certain martial arts. There does not seem to be an artical on obi, nor does there seem to be a more detailed definition of what it is. Do you want to clean up the Category:Japanese writing system into a tree structure, so that e.g. "kana" will be unlinked from Category:Japanese language and only be under the writing system category? I like what you're doing Fg2, and while jpatokal seems to think you're the only vocal anti-macronist (is that a right-winger or a left-winger?) it's no big deal. I WOULD back you up a little more if I had the time, but there's a few facts about this here establishment that make it more of a burden than I'm willing to handle.

First of all, you have to admit the bias here (on Wikipedia) is totally slanted towards the geeky, over-factual, crufty, and elitest. Most likely, 90% of the people working on Japanese articles are, in fact, non-Japanese people with a decent understanding of Japanese things and a relative pride for Japan. You may be one of these too, as am I. It is only natural that these kind of people would fight for macrons, Japanese name order, articles in 'accurate' Japanese, -ku and -dera suffixes, and things like that. It's how Japanese articles are made less accessible to people who know nothing about Japan or at least how they are made more mysterious and foreign.

I believe that it is natural for this to happen (mathematics articles will always have really confusing diagrams and explanations, and linguistics articles will be understood by nobody who hasn't studied at least 5 languages) and there's not much that can be done about it; the number of 興味ある人 is far greater than the number of people seriously trying to write encyclopedic articles for the masses.

Jpatokal mentioned 'hypercorrectness' and I think that's a great word to describe what can't be stopped in something like Wikipedia. I won't promote it; I'll resist it, but it's too much for me to fight against so I'll just sit back and let everyone else fight it out. In the meantime I'll try to quietly fix the problems that nobody has noticed yet, and hopefully consensus will last long enough for it to become standard ; ).  freshgavin TALK   07:02, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

I've been editing articles for a year and a half now, long enough to have figured out that Wikipedia doesn't go my way. It's heartening to hear from one who agrees with me! Many of your points struck a responsive chord. Especially, the word "hypercorrectness" captures a lot of my feeling about what some people are trying to achieve. Hi thanks about my map. Used a black background to make it look different than the ones I had been looking at, not sure if it works. I hadnt seen your maps before, found it just then after you mentioned it. I certainly wont be replacing yours because theyre alot more detailed than mine, but I had been thinking about putting a map of the individual lines on some of the pages which dont have maps at the moment. I have to admit I find the new article a little too washed out for my tastes. Since that's my apartment, though, it would be very easy for me to step outside and take a new picture (well, not tonight, obviously, but whenever daylight is good). I'm not particularly attached to the picture, necessarily, but if you think that it's properly illustrative for the article, I'll try for a better shot that focuses more closely on the building.

There's another apartment going up near here that I pass regularly on my way to school, although it may be almost completed by now. I noticed your inclusion of an external link in the Japanese section of non-native pronunciations of English. It seems redundant to me to have such a link when there is one provided for all languages at the bottom. Do you have something in mind that would imply we ought to do the same for all the languages or should we remove it and allow readers to find the language themselves at the bottom?AEuSoes1 03:06, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Concerning coordinates and second of arc, I am not aware of the any discussions on this issue except Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers). Nevertheless, I tend to include the second of arc if they are specified by the Tiger Map server available through the U.S. Census Bureau. I don't know if I would be so bold as to call two or three of us agreeing a conclusion; but, I think naming it Chikatetsu Narimasu Staion is correct, and it can be justified pretty easily, based on the info at the Tokyo Metro home page: http://www.tokyometro.jp/e/ticket/index.html

Hi Fg2 -- Please don't re-add the photo of Kyoto to the Boston article. Wikipedia tries to have a few photos that add information about the subject of the article, rather than many "interesting" photos of lesser relevance. Photographs of sister cities don't really give people more information about a place, and the wikilink to a sister city provides a very easy and immediate way to get to photos and other information without having it in the article.

I see where you're coming at with the rounding but I can only assume that the stated 13.01km² isn't quite as accurate as they know it is and in fact officially it's usually stated as a simple 13km². On second inspection, though, I realized that the pop. density figure didn't line up with the pop/land area figures I listed so I checked again and realized the officially stated pop. figure applies to the population minus foreigners so I'm going to revise it and ... round it to the 4th anyways.

BUT, if I hadn't have had to make that change myself I would have argued against your revision because I do believe it's the ward's job to monitor the precision of their figures and not ours, so we should be able to trust in what ever amount of reasonable precision they hand us!   freshgavin TALK    09:29, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi there, I've just released a first draft of the article for Owarai. Planning on adding a couple sections (e.g. history) in the near future, but I think it's pretty informative as it is. Would appreciate your input; It may be better in the owarai geinin/talent space instead, though I think a more general title would be appropriate, and I'm going to work on filling out the links from there as well.

It's definitely quite biased as to my interest (tried to smooth it out as much as I could, with my knowledge of owarai only as recent as it is!) so I'd appreciate if you could pick me up on anything I overlooked there. I agree with what you commented. I actually started to change it to Hakata Station while disambig'ing some of the Hakata links, but I forgot what Osaka's shinkansen station was called.

On another completely unrelated topic, I just now came across Iwashimizu Shrine, where you moved the picture to the left side about a year ago. Any particular reason for that (other than the perspective of the shrine's staircase)? I thought I remembered some guideline about the first picture of short articles should be on the right, but a cursory search through the MoS came up empty. The equivalent tag for what is on the Japanese site is {{PD-ineligible}}. I am willing to take it on good faith and assume the folks from Japan no their copyright law better than I. I have just seen a couple of Japanese government web sites (English versions) with copyright emblems on them. I suggest you replace the Copyright warning tag on the two images with the PD ineligible tag for now and see if anyone else raise a fuss. -Regards Nv8200p talk 23:09, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm currently in the process of completely rewriting the list (it's gonna take a while), User:Freshgavin/Sandbox/List_of_Japanese_comedians, and I'm trying to think of an elegant way to list the names in English alongside the Japanese. Names like アンガールズ will be transliterated appropriately to Ungirls, though it's not technically official, and I'd like to maintain links to the members of kombi of 2 or 3 members if possible too.
