Hi, Djembayz! Let's collaborate on some Tibetan articles at some point. I've been trying to find solid resources for Akhu Tönpa and build it up, but it's got a ways to go. Check it out when you get a chance! Upjav (talk) 19:09, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and YOUR History: Taking Control of the Internet

Come one and come all. To a presentation at the Laurel Historical Society about how you can help verify, validate, and edit the information that is on the front line of local history.

Picture your self leading the masses to improve Wikimedia one article at a time.
  • Show the Internet who is the better editor.
  • Be the creator of culture that you know you are.
  • Spread the knowledge of noteworthy people who no one but you cares about.
  • Lead the charge to a better Wikipedia --- eventually.

Wikipedia and YOUR History: Taking Control of the Internet

See you at the Laurel Pool Room, 9th and Main Street, Laurel, MD on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:00 PM EST. See http://www.meetup.com/Wikimedia-DC/events/205494212/ for more information. Geraldshields11 (talk) 02:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

Unstoppable: The Emerging Left–Right Alliance to Dismantle the Corporate State

Thanks for creating the page on Nader's book. I spent a chunk of February dipping my toes into the shark-infested waters at the American Left talk page and the associated article, and I may have managed to kick a shark or two before escaping relatively unscathed. Or maybe I just replaced one shark with a different one. The results are at User:Flying_Jazz. Depending on your political views, you might find what's there hilarious or amusing or troubling or upsetting, but based on your creation of the article for Nader's book, your academic background, and the time you've been at Wikipedia, I'm hoping for the first option which is why I'm writing here. There must be some joy and fun at Wikipedia now and then! Flying Jazz (talk) 22:09, 27 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of African American men in STEM fields

Some misunderstanding here. At 4:34, 25 February 2015,User:Cullen328 moved page List of African American men in STEM fields to Donald R. Brown on the basis that that was the actual topic, so I think the text has been moved rather than deleted. My only role was to delete the resulting redirect on the basis that it was implausible, but feel free to recreate the redirect if you disagree. Invitation

A gummi bear holding a sign that says "Thank you"
Thank you for using VisualEditor and sharing your ideas with the developers.

Hello, Djembayz,

The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you were one of the very first testers of VisualEditor, back in 2012 or early 2013. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work better for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

You can share your thoughts by clicking this link. You may respond to this quick, simple, anonymous survey in your own language. If you take the survey, then you agree your responses may be used in accordance with these terms. This survey is powered by Qualtrics and their use of your information is governed by their privacy policy.

More information (including a translateable list of the questions) is posted on wiki at mw:VisualEditor/Survey 2015. If you have questions, or prefer to respond on-wiki, then please leave a message on the survey's talk page.

You are right

Hi Djembayz, you are right with your post on the LB page about the real world implications of a hostile environment. However, the problem is that LB's problems are self-inflicted. It's sort of like trying to deal with a difficult customer at a business who behaves inappropriately. I like the point you made that WMF has to pull on their big kid boots and grow a spine, not defer to the unpaid volunteers of arbcom. But here we do have an individual behavior issue. I don't have an answer, but I wanted to tell you that I agree with your RL concerns, but as I know EC via Facebook and he's not satan, I really do liken this to a situation where you have two clients who both patronize a business, but whose paths should never cross, as opposed to two co-workers whose paths should never cross and one or both of them will ultimately get fired. I wish I had a definitive answer to your dilemma. Montanabw(talk) 01:13, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Montanabw, shouldn't this be on User talk:Djembayz (which was moved here and is still a redirect)? I'd move it there but that might be rude. ekips39talk 19:39, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If Djembayz wants this as her talk, I'm not going to un-redirect it, I thought you were right, but I've reconsidered. Presumably Djembayz has her archives watchlisted. Montanabw(talk) 22:00, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reporting usernames for admin review

Hey! Hope all is well. Thanks for reporting usernames for admin review. Here is a tip to save us admins some time: If the user has a warning that has been placed on their page within the past seven days, don't report it to us. We are usually watching it already and aware of the situation. Thanks again. Missvain (talk) 23:47, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of List of cities impacted by current sea level rise

The article List of cities impacted by current sea level rise has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

article of little value whose scope is extremely large (all seaside cities) and whose fundamental concern (the impact of sea rise) is better deal in the already existing article Future sea level.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Lappspira (talk) 07:41, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've made what I hope are some improvements to the From pupulation control to reproductive health article, starting again almost from scratch: I'd greatly appreciate it if you could review them, and perhaps expand the article a bit more with material from WP:RS. -- The Anome (talk) 17:23, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Five minutes to help make WikiProjects better

Hello!

First, on behalf of WikiProject X, thank you for trying out the WikiProject X pilot projects. I would like to get some anonymous feedback from you on your experience using the new WikiProject layout and tools. This way, we will know what we did right, and if we did something horribly wrong, we can try to fix it. This feedback won't be associated with your username, so please be completely honest. We are determined to improve the experience of Wikipedians, and your feedback helps us with that. (You are also welcome to leave non-anonymous feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X.)

Please complete the survey here. The survey has two parts: the first part asks for your username, while the second part contains the survey questions. These two parts are stored separately, so your username will not be associated with your feedback. There are only nine questions and it should not take very long to complete. Once you complete the survey I will leave a handwritten note on your talk page as a token of my appreciation.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Harej (talk) 17:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Tools

Yes, if you have some specific technique that makes it possible for individuals to defend ourselves against bullies on this website without turning to others for help, it would be very useful. What is it?

That's not exactly what I said now, is it? I'm not going to respond to a straw man. However, I will note that many users do not know how to use certain things, which is why we need to teach them. New users have a tutorial which they are presented with upon account creation. Does it focus on how to deal with incivility? Start there. A healthy community will defend its members as a reflex. Instead we see lots of editors who prefer to keep their heads down and allow others to engage in bad behavior without sticking their neck out. I've had admins lie about me, make false accusations in my own block log, and continue to spread lies -- who am I supposed to complain to when the very people who are supposed to protect the community are the biggest bullies? Sorry, but my experience here is obviously at odds with your own. I don't trust anyone in any position of power or authority here, and I have very good reason for it. Viriditas (talk) 01:21, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker)I've seen both good and bad users of authority here. The "canvassing" rules are poorly-designed and inconsistently applied. Clearly, some animals are more equal than others. Montanabw(talk) 21:16, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Montanabw, you're one of my fave people here, so I'm biased, but the reason I disagree with you is because the system on Wikipedia encourages power centralization which inevitably leads to abuse and CYA decisions. Look no farther than the current Neelix situation where this user is being treated differently than others for all the wrong reasons. One, he's an admin, as if that is supposed to protect him from the rules. In fact, as an admin he is held to a greater level of responsibility and trust, so his actions should result not just in an immediate desysopping and block, but in a display of zero tolerance for a person in his position acting in this way. Instead, we see the corruption of Wikipedia playing out in full form: because Neelix is a professor, other professors have stepped in to give him an exemption from the rules. Can anyone say Geoffrey Marcy, who the academic community took twenty years to discipline for sexual harassment? Then you've got the enablers who have accused those asking for discipline here of carrying pitchforks and acting villainous. Really? Asking for a modicum of swift justice in an unambiguous incident where the perp has repeatedly violated community norms towards women is tantamount to villainous pitchfork rioting? And as if it couldn't get any worse, we have arbcom itself failing to take action, killing a motion to save us from further inaction, and actually calling for a three-month interregnum where Neelix will be given the benefit of the doubt! Insanity prevails, and if it couldn't get any worse, you have loads of editors and admins alike congratulating arbcom and the failure to take action against Neelix. This is why I have called for the immediate disbanding and dissolution of arbcom, and the removal of the RFA process. If you want to limit and mitigate sexism and prejudice against women on Wikipedia, you first have to go after the real perps: admins and arbcom. Viriditas (talk) 20:18, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Probably deeper issues here than I know, I misinterpreted the discussion; I wasn't up on the Neelix thing (and yes, that does sound like a bad situation), I was actually going in the same general direction I think you are - in that it seems that when I have a problem and ask people to lend me a hand in a bad situation, everyone promptly starts yelling that I am "canvassing," (or at least, they accuse me of having "friends") while the people bent on making my life utter hell seem to "canvass" without compunction or penalty. I was also surprised at some of the people who threw me under the bus at my RfA, after I thought we were amicable colleagues. OTOH, some rather weird stuff happened right after the RfA concluded, and some "people in authority" did right by me to protect my real-world identity and removing some harassment before I'd even been alerted that it was there. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed anti-bullying task force

Given your usually commendable efforts to try to make Wikipedia a safer place, and despite my disappointment that your chosen set of illustrative safe workplace guidelines (which I now seem unable to find, but you linked to them during or just after Lightbreather's "show trial") said they would never consider complaints of discrimination against 'priviliged' groups such as whites and males (meaning people like me, tho I don't want to put in time and effort discussing that question anytime soon), just in case you don't already know (as you haven't commented), I thought you might want to know that SageRad has a proposal to set up an anti-bullying task force, discussion of which stretches from here to here. Unsurprizingly, some people don't think Wikipedia has a bullying problem and prefer to call Mobbing 'piling on' and view it as a good thing that helps bring about 'consensus' - and those who say this are probably just the unusually honest tip of the iceberg. Wishing you a Charlie Brown
Charlie Russell Christmas! 🎄
Best wishes for your Christmas
Is all you get from me
'Cause I ain't no Santa Claus
Don't own no Christmas tree.
But if wishes was health and money
I'd fill your buck-skin poke
Your doctor would go hungry
An' you never would be broke."

The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 22:01, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Towards a New Wikimania results

Last December, I invited you to share your views on the value of Wikimedia conferences and the planning process of Wikimania. We have completed analysis of these results and have prepared this report summarizing your feedback and important changes for Wikimania starting in 2018 as an experiment. Feedback and comments are welcome at the discussion page. Thank you so much for your participation. I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, 22:47, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WikiConference - Indigenous People's Day Programming

Hi Djembayz - I see that you are taking a wikibreak, but I thought I would reach out anyway.

I am getting in touch with you because I am helping to plan and organize Indigenous Peoples' Day programming during WikiConference 2016 and I think your feedback about our direction would be invaluable. If you are interested, perhaps I can share our vision and what we have planned to date? Input during the conference from Wikipedia users who focus on these projects and adding this content is also an important piece of this. Thanks! March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
