Foo articles missing geocoordinate data

I anticipate we will from time to time find new entries for currently empty categories, so would tend to keep them. I think there's one infobox template which populates country level categories if there are no geo-ccords; and I know we have many more category branches to parse to find articles missing geo-coords. All that said, expect progress to be glacial and for empty categories to stay empty for long periods of time.

Though I've not looked for a fortnight or so, I think we only had 10 or so empty cats out of about 300.

Mekong

I might be able to save you some time and effort by going ahead and starting populating Category:Communities on the Mekong River; I started the category at the same time I started Category:Mekong River, a few days ago, sorry for just leaving it there empty, I have been busy. There are definitely dozens of villages, communes and districts to be placed in the category, I am going to start on it now. Bodega Bay

You know--I never thought about that, but I take your point--part of Bodega Bay is in Marin. The reference I deleted though was to The Birds. I'm looking at Footsteps in the Fog, a rather meticulous book on Hitchcock's Northern California films. The author says the film was shot mainly in the town of Bodega Bay and the "hamlet of Bodega". Also San Francisco, Sebastopol, and Santa Cruz. The furthest point south in the Bodega area was the Nosecchi Dairy on Bodega Avenue, standing in for the Brenner driveway. (As opposed to the farm, which was filmed on Bodega Head using facades.) On that basis, I don't think Marin can claim it. Barte (talk) 04:55, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Navboxes

I am moving our discussion here so as not to "hog" the project's talk page.

Thank you for looking them over, but what do I do now? Do I create a page like a regular article? And, lastly the million-dollar question-do I need to comb through the articles I've worked on and replace old box with new box. I guess that would be optional. If you're going to do this, you should definitely take care of replacing templates in the affected articles. Let me know if you need help -- I don't have much template-editing experience, but I've done a lot of boring mass-edits.

You need to create at least one page in Template space, maybe two. Start by editing Template:Protected Areas of California and copying all the markup to your browser's clipboard. Then go to Template:Federally-protected areas of California and click on the redlink that says "Create the page". Paste the markup into the text box. Then make an necessary changes -- deletions mostly but you might need to cut and paste from your sandbox -- and save changes.

For Template:State-protected areas of California you could try simply doing a page-move of Template:Protected Areas of California and then editing the result. This has the advantage of incorporating the edit history, but the move would break so much that it would probably get reverted before you could finish the job. I suggest creating a third Template: page instead.

Well I think I've done it. And I think I've learned a bit about templates, what they are and what their use is, as well as some of the different types. I decided to leave the original large navbox as is, so there are now three template options for editors to use. Thanks again for your help and patience.

Yes, the boxes seem to be working-go for it. Sorry to have taken so long to respond, I've caught the bug going around Sonoma County. :( that " noinclude" code is tricky, I still don't fully understand it. Cat deletion

Hello Stephen. I just deleted a handful of your latest sweep of useless categories. You do realize that this would all go much faster if you could delete these categories yourself, right? wink wink nudge nudge. Why not apply for adminship? By the way, admin tools are extremely useful for the kind of cleanup work you do around here. Not because you can delete pages or block people: the really interesting tool is the access to deleted pages. In many cases, you'll find that this info can really help understand the little details you need to make your cleanup decisions. I know that it's a pain to go through RfA (and pain isn't even the right word here) but I think you'd be the kind of admin we need. We have plenty of people doing the contentious bits but we're short on admins working on the little things. Anyhoo, let me know if you're interested. Cat

It's part of a complex set of templates and categories which if broken will probably be repaired incorrectly if at all. The way it works would be obvious if it wasn't blanked, blanking these cats is counter productive because the deleting admin will see a page with just the the db message on and assume that it was blank and empty, some cats are meant to be empty. There will probably be some articles in the category soon, several of it's sister cats had been deleted and weren't empty. Rich Farmbrough, 00:24 9 February 2009 (UTC).

Hi, Stepheng3 - Have you considered notifying cat creators when you do this? I always notify the creator when I take something to CFD -- and doing so in the case of a Speedy is just as important, if not more so. It's to your credit that you blank the page before coming back to tag it for deletion. But I've created many hundreds of categories and can't possibly keep an eye on all of them. I just saved a recently-created category (Category:Government in the United States by state) in the nick of time -- purely by luck, as I just happened to check in on it and was truly shocked to discover that it had been deliberately emptied by another editor, who didn't have the decency to let me know. Anyway, I hope in the future you'll take the extra step of notifying the creator, just to be sure that you're not inadvertently a party to this sort of situation. No, I hadn't considered notifying cat creators. It's a good idea. For convenience (and to maintain a high degree of tact) I'd want a notification template for the purpose, but that shouldn't be too hard to create. Or does one already exist?

17th-century elections categories, etc

Hi - great job on the C1 deletion front (as you may have seen, I was busy zapping ones you'd tagged earlier), but there's a hitch on the "xx-century elections" categories. They're in the process of being moved from unhyphenated to hyphenated form, and are listed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working for the bots to do. For some reason, the bots have created the new page but not moved the contents across yet. Everything at the moment is in Category:17th century elections but will be moved shortly. So I'd ask you not to blank these categories. There's been a lot of these hyphen-adding changes recently, with more to come I expect, so you may see this again. Regards, and carry on the good work! I take on board what you say - however they shouldn't have been changed, they are article that are tagged for the Fantasy task force of the "Novels Wikiproject". The scope of this project "is" wider than just novels covering all prose narratives. However it is does not cover all "fiction" that would be film, comics etc etc. So I don't mind you tidying up but someone has just taken it upon themselves to make changes to our Banner with out thinking about the consequences. Categories:Current peer reviews are administrative not part of the encyclopedia.

Stephen, the process of peer review is not something I am really familiar with and some things appear to have changed since the category was created. My understanding is that the Category:Open Dance peer reviews belongs under the hierarchy of Category:Current peer reviews/Category:Arts peer reviews and to quote from these higher level cats "This category is used for administration of the Wikipedia project, and is not part of the encyclopedia." The name appears inconsistent with other cats in that hierarchy though, so probably should be deleted. -- Paul foord (talk) 10:21, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Under Category:Religious terrorism this category was included. It included the page Hindu Taliban. Someone has removed the category. There are various topics associated with it. book category moves

In some cases there were a series of categories created for a single book, so it it the bottom level category was merged into to high level parents, that could leave several other categories effectively empty. The entire tree needs looking at after the Indian books are cleaned up. That would be great. That's real kind of you and I appreciate it. The article, I was thinking, could just be plain simple with:

• It's subject
• Categories
• Classification
• and the people that run it

Because the only one that exists is for Jammu and Kashmir and is within the scope of wikiproject India and also isn't at all a normal wikiproject i thought of creating one for the whole of Kashmir, the disputed, free and controlled areas as, even though being Indian, i remain neutral on the argument of who it belongs to.

Help would be great and gradually we should be able to create a simple wikiproject that just takes an effort of watching it once every 2 days or something.

Thanks for your note about sock categories. If I recall correctly, all his puppets are now confirmed by checkuser, but they still show in the 'suspected' category. In the past, I have not bothered to try to reclassify accounts that are confirmed. Do you think it's worth it? Also, is there a sockpuppeteer template that has links to the sock categories? Cache Creek article suggestion

I bring this up with you as you and I seem to be the only editors interested in Cache Creek. I think the title should be just "Cache Creek (California)" so that, one, it matches Bear Creek (California) wikilink and two, the counties it travels through do not matter-that is addressed in the text portion. But seriously, if our Cache Creek is the only one that is a trib to the Sacramento R., then that name you suggest would indeed be more accurate and I vote yes to that.

Also, in a related note, then is there a disambig for Bear Creek?

Bear Creek(California) Looking at this article, I think it is the proper way to address this issue of multiple creeks-it lists the total number of creeks, then each section discusses each creek by county, with links as needed. Stephen, I think your suggestion on the naming convention of Cache Creek is the best way to go because,one, it eliminates possible duplication of names/articles and two, it gives the larger river system that the notable creek is a part of. May I go ahead and "move" the article? I would also be willing to "break out" as you put it- the Bear Creek page hybrid, although at the moment, I'm trying to create a new article on the Cosumnes River Preserve as well.

I created the category in the process of doing some cleanup on a set of articles that had been misfiled in inappropriate categories by somebody else, but the articles (which I had no part in creating, just fixing the categorization on) were subsequently deleted as NN.
