I don't know the details, but can someone fix this?or is it just me? it sounds like he married his own granddaughter in this section:
" They are cousins of the flamenco great Manitas de Plata, lead guitarist Tonino Baliardo married his granddaughter. "

YES, surely that is not right and should be fixed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.115.97.51 (talk) 00:00, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Videography??

The Discography and Live sections of the article don't seem to include the DVD's/Videotapes the Gipsy Kings have done. For example Gipsy Kings "Live at Kenwood House in London" (Liberation Entertainment, 2006 copyright owned by Genius Entertainment); "Tierra Gitana y Live" (Publisher? 2005 DVD only available in PAL system format, zone 2; however a U.S.A. compatible videotape version appears to be available. It's about 2 hours long) and another "Tierra Gitana" without the "y Live" that was produced in the late 1990's that is 57 minutes long. There may be other DVD's and videotapes as well. Source of my info: I own a copy of the Live at Kenwood DVD; my local librarian was able to locate copies of videotapes of the other two in Florida and California and told me about them. The specific DVD info about "Tierra Gitana y Live" came from http://www.esflamenco.com/product/en25771045.html

I don't know how to properly add this info to the Wikipedia article, so please feel free if you are more experienced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.168.52.86 (talk) 18:34, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

T. Baliardo info changed!

People should really research more thoroughly! Before the self-titled one, there was Essences. Yes it was import-only, but you can buy it on ...zon. -andy 85.179.207.229 (talk) 03:42, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Allegria I believe was their debut, not the eponymous one. Also, Allegria had several lead singers and they eventually assigned the lead singer duties to Nick Reyes. I don't know if there's a story behind that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tintindeo82 (talkcontribs) 15:09, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Language

I see no mention of this made elsewhere in the article or the discussion page, so thought I would bring the subject up.

The first sentence in the article lists the Kings as "Spanish-language musicians." This is technically incorrect. While some people regard Gitane (the language most of their songs are presented in) as a dialect of Spanish, it could equally be claimed to be a dialect of Catalan or French, as both of these languages have heavy influence on the language. Rather than enter the fray and try to decide what is, and is not, a dialect of what, I think it would be better to provide the facts and let people draw their own conclusions.

In reference to the way the page in now written: it's just not true that the Gipsy Kings "perform mostly in Catalan". In fact, I'm not sure that they ever really perform in Catalan. If you look at the Catalan version of this page, it mentions that they perform mainly in Spanish with an Andalusian accent. That seems to be a lot more accurate than what's written here, even if their Spanish is a bit of a hybrid that's not always fully intelligible to many Spanish speakers. I would suggest changing "who perform mostly in Catalan but also mix in Spanish with southern French dialects" to "who perform mainly in Spanish", since this would be a lot less misleading than the current text. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.43.17.224 (talk) 22:24, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible to find any sources that would clearly state what language the band mainly sings in? Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 05:02, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I'm not sure, but looking at some other wikipedia pages (i.e. those in Spanish, French, Dutch and German...apart from the page in Catalan I mentioned above) none seem to claim that the Gispy Kings perform in Catalan at all. The Spanish page mentions the following: "cantan en español combinado con dialectos franceses sureños" while the Catalan page interestingly clarifies "Criats dins la cultura gitana, els Gipsy Kings han conservat el català com a llengua materna i han adoptat el castellà per a cantar, costum estès entre els gitanos catalans de França des de fa dècades" and has a reference to go along with that. That could be worth mentioning here and would be much more accurate and informative than the way the page in English is currently written. 83.43.17.224 (talk) 14:27, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The text you've copy/pasted isn't in English, so it isn't super helpful for an improved understanding of the issue. I'm leaning towards leaving it as it is until a source can be found that can confirm what language the band mainly sings in. Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 14:36, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So, in English, the quote from Spanish Wikipedia is: "they sing in Spanish mixed with southern French dialects"; and the quote from the Catalan page is something like, "Raised within Gypsy culture, the Gipsy Kings have maintained the use of Catalan as a mother tongue while using Spanish to sing, a practice which, for decades, has been typical among Catalan Gypsies in France".
Both the Spanish and Catalan pages acknowledge that the group sings in Spanish. The other Wikipedia pages I checked make no mention of language, and it's apparently only the English version that wrongly indicates that the Gipsy Kings perform mainly in Catalan.
You can use the "detect language" feature on Google Translate to see that the vast majority of their lyrics are in Spanish. I don't think any lyrics-- taken as a whole-- will be detected as Catalan, not even their song Petite Noya which is, I think, the only song of theirs that seems like it was meant to be written in Catalan. (Their spelling and grammar are so non-standard that it may not be totally recognizable as Catalan) 83.43.20.87 (talk) 21:59, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than requiring a source to explicitly demonstrate something that is painfully obvious to every Catalan speaker on the planet, to my mind, what is necessary is some substantiation of the rather extraordinary claim that the group performs mainly in Catalan.
The Radio Prague International article used as a source is problematic. The article quotes the group's manager as saying "we sing mainly in Catalan", but isn't it strange for a group's manager to use "we sing" like this? In context, it's actually not clear that he would be referring to the Gipsy Kings here rather than, say, all Catalan Gypsies in France. Though, from what I can gather, it seems equally likely that he is not being quoted in a fully accurate way.
The fact that this is a Czech organization, publishing a Spanish article based on an interview with a French speaker may not be totally irrelevant. And the fact that the article makes a claim which has, apparently, never been made elsewhere should raise a few red flags.
I'm not opposed to finding new sources that say what language the group performs in, but in the meantime, the misinformation that currently appears on the page should be removed. 83.42.60.109 (talk) 19:17, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Those are all valid points, come to think of it. Perhaps the best thing to do is to align the content of this article with other wikis on the subject of the language the band sings in. Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 03:56, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what to do with this on Wikipedia. I imagine it should be deleted and rewritten by somebody who knows something about the Gipsy Kings. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.73.37.115 (talk) 08:46, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Caminando por la Calle

A previous version of this article claimed that the Gipsy Kings had collaborated with Rubén Blades on the song "Caminando por la Calle". Rubén disputed this vehemently: actually, the singer for the Gipsy Kings scat-sang the trombone solo from Rubén's song "Patria" as part of the newer creation, without Blades even being aware of it, and once he learned of it that brought a copyright dispute, that was easily settled when Rubén got co-writer credits for the song (and, I would imagine, a share of the royalties). The problem I have is that I've misplaced the reference I had about that dispute. Can anybody find it? 199.64.0.252 (talk) 16:13, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of André Reyes

The spelling of André Reyes' first name is variously given as Andre or Andre' but it should be André (with French e-acute-accent letter). As support I am throwing in an official Gipsy Kings website giving the (current?) line-up's names. https://gipsykingsandrereyes.com/ 64.62.19.90 (talk) 17:30, 14 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I will correct it accordingly. Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 17:58, 14 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Does all the "left-handed" discussion belong in "career" section

I think it's interesting to read about what methods of stringing, holding, and playing the guitar are used by these musicians, but I'm not sure it belongs in the "career" section. Did any of it affect their careers? I don't see the connection. I think it would have to be a separate section, more related for example to a discussion of their overall rumba flamenca style. Playing a right-handed guitar in left-handed position does change the way chords are fingered and could contribute to the unique overall sound and style. K9gardner (talk) 15:49, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

K9gardner, I agree with you in theory, but is there enough material on the topic of playing style to warrant a separate sub-section? Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 16:08, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Chico Bouchikhi

Chico Bouchikhi is described in the section Beginnings: 1970s–1980s as a "Moroccan musician," and on his own Wikipedia page, Chico Bouchikhi as a "French musician" - ("born in Arles, France, to a Moroccan father from Oujda and an Algerian mother from Tlemcen.") it might be appropriate to change one article or the other. 81.105.46.48 (talk) 08:00, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
