A Chinchilla's Life Span usally consists of a mininum of 15 years, some have been said to have lived for up to 30 years. As a result of irresponsible animal husbandry practices originating from the early twentieth century when fur coats were at the height of popularity for the middle class, dental problems affecting proper natural tooth wear are common in the domesticated species. Chinchillas that develop dental problems, particularly at a younger age, do not experience the longevity that is cited; uneven tooth wear results, which if regular tooth trims cannot effectively manage the condition, results in dental abcesses that drain into the lung cavity causing fatal pneumonia. It is more accurate to give a broad range of longevity: 3-5 years if dental problems present would be more typical (up to 10 years with extensive veterinary intervention and extraordinary efforts on the part of the pet owner), and 15-20 years with good dental genetics (30 years is absolutely unsubstantiated).

Look under the section "Health." The individuals responsible for the site, Betti Cogswell, RN, Lani Ritchey, and Roxane Beeman, have privately published a booklet called "The Joy of Chinchillas" that is in its 6th edition now. I merely mention it because it was cited in the veterinary book by Elizabeth V. Hillyer, DVM, and Katherine E. Quesenberry, DVM, in their first edition (1977) of "Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery" (by W. B. Saunders Company). (The Hillyer & Quesenberry book has since been updated, but I cannot keep up with every edition that is published when I am not a veterinarian.) Betti, Lani, and Roxane have worked with chinchillas for a long, long time, from show chinchillas to rescues. They have been researching the health needs of just chinchillas.

Chinchillas are currently listed as a critically endangered species

I think there's a typo : the year should refer to the late 1990s rather than the late 1900s. However, no source is explicitly cited. Could anyone verify if this is the case (or even better, find the exact year)?TehUniverse (talk) 08:38, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Chinchillas are normally diurnal in the their wild habitat, but when domesticated, chinchillas have shown an adaptation to a diurnal lifestyle. Chinchillas are normally known as agile and playful, but can be timid and give trial bites when exposed to new people or environments. Similar to other rodents, chinchillas enjoy environments where they are capable to climb and jump as well have access to gnawing materials. [1]

In the introduction, the article says the name 'literally means clay' with no citation, then later in the same paragraph says the animal is named after the Chincha people. An edit I would suggest is for the “as pets” section of the article. This section briefly covers how chinchillas are cared for as pets but it does not go into detail, such as the proper diet they should be eating and chew toys they should have to help with the constant growing of their teeth. This section also does not cover the kind of habitat an owner should provide them with (such as a large cage and a wheel for exercise) and a cage mate because chinchillas do not like to live alone. Hello @Max Vestappen: You added two WP:PRIMARY sources and so this certainly does appear overly detailed to Elmidae. However Kuhl is one of the most cited studies I have seen and Spotorno is also highly cited. If you include WP:SECONDARY sources this would show why this is justified coverage in the article. Actually I'm less objecting to the use of primary sources - those do end to pop up in STEM topics more than in other articles - but the excessive and, to the reader, pointless detail in terms of measurements and values. The entire addition could probably be condensed to something like "The inner ear of the Chilean chinchilla has an unusual morphology with ossicles suspended in balanced positions, enabling perception of high frequencies (ref Spotorno)".
