Talk:Adam Jones (American football)

POV check

I added a POV check tag so someone else could check the article out. I was hesitant to add it, but a large portion of the article seems very slanted towards not liking the Adam Jones. i think it just needs to just be reworded a bit to conform to a neutral point of view. --ScottyBoy900Q 12:40, 4 March 2006 (UTC) I tried to fix it up a bit. Sarge[reply]

The article still seems to take narrative and negative position on Jones looking at the length of different sections and which details of his career are written about (is it really noteworthy that he compared Andre Johnson unfavorably to AJ Green?). Wish it could get some review by, say, non-American football fans for objectivity. 75.118.96.54 (talk) 18:35, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Official name

If his now-legal name is Pacman Jones, we should make his article under that name, not Adam Jones (American football). We have Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Muhammad Ali under their changed names, so too should we for Pacman. SliceNYC 03:31, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I checked into it quickly on Google and it doesn't seem like Pacman is his legal first name. So I deleted the part about that in the article, and my point is now moot. SliceNYC 03:35, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy

Couldn't this section be retitled 'legal troubles' or something of the sort? all of the controversy is related to criminal investigations. maybe it would be more accurate than to simply say 'controversy' (although obviously controversy would be applicable if something else comes up.) Xwoodandwater 01:46, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article should be moved to Pacman Jones (settled)

He is always reffered to as Pacman Jones, NFL.com, CBS sportsline and everyone other stat datebase lists him as 'Pacman'.[1][2] [3]In the media he is never reffered to a Adam Jones. This article should be moved to Pacman Jones even if its not his real name--Coasttocoast 01:04, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly agree. We already, after all, have Michael Savage's artilce under his pseudonym instead of his real name, Michael Weiner. WP:COMMONNAME says we should use the name a person is best known by, and in Mr. Jones' case that's clearly "Pacman". Redxiv 04:25, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I second the notion to rename the article Pacman Jones. Along with the references more commonly referring to Pacman instead of Adam, there are other Adam Jones and it would make the article neater looking to have it say Pacman Jones instead of Adam Jones (football player). The parenthesis of football player makes it look unclean. Either change it to Pacman Jones or Adam "Pacman" Jones. John 05:27, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Might be a good idea to include how he got the name Pacman somewhere in the article, because it is important and nowhere to be seen. Kaiser matias 03:20, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Who the hell is Moore? Possible Plagiarism?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacman_Jones#2007 This "Moore" person is not mentioned anywhere else in the article... but then suddenly, boom, this last name comes out of nowhere. Who's "Moore"? --Recoil42 05:58, 4 April 2007 (UTC) Moore is drug dealer Darryl Moore. --Zero Cool 07:09, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is it really worth mentioning?

Is it really worth mentioning that the NFL commissioner met with Pacman to discuss his future on April 3rd? --Angrymansr 21:05, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-Protection

I had placed this page on Semi-Protection, to lessen the vandalism hopefully. John 06:09, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More Vandalism

I removed a lot of overtly racist comments. The article said that he was the only black person in the state of West Virginia and moved to Tennessee because it had a larger black population. Clearly that was vandalism. But I also removed a few items that I mention here just in case I'm wrong. The article said that his mother Deborah's nickname was "Shaniqua." Sounded racist to me, but I Googled it to be safe, and found nothing, so I removed it. Likewise for a nickname for his Grandmother Christine. Finally, I removed this sentence from his "legal troubles - 2006" section: "Also, on November 12, 2006. Jones was arrested for sucker-punching Latino fans after the Tennessee Titans game in Oakland." Because of the racial overtones and the use of the term "sucker punch" I figured it was suspicious. I checked every source I could think of and I couldn't find any reference to him being arrested in Oakland for getting in a fight with fans. If he did get arrested, put this back in without the unnecessary bits. Andrewdoane 12:53, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Info Box Name?

Some of you wanted "Adam Jones". Some of you wanted "Pacman Jones". I thought "Adam 'Pacman' Jones" was a fair compromise. Obviously, "Pacman Jones" is more recognized, so I don't have a problem with the article being named "Pacman Jones". However, if you wanted to look up his statistics in a sports almanac, you wouldn't find anything under "Pacman Jones". You would have to look up his information under "Adam Jones". Having the full variation "Adam 'Pacman' Jones" solves both problems. --Bark 21:26, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention, it's inclusive and not exclusive. Inclusive is good for an encyclopedia. --Bark 21:27, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
His infobox name should not be a full name. The only reason that field is in even the infobox template is for pages that have a disambig. (i.e. (American football)) can have it removed for the infobox. But if there's not a disambig., as is the case here, the name that the article is titled by (the common name of the person) is the one used in the infobox. All other middle names/other nicknames/jr's, etc. that aren't in the article title should be left for the actual article text itself. Pats1 00:25, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The purpose of infoboxes is to give correct snapshot information. The reason the name field was implemented was not only to allow for things like disambiguations in titles, but people or things that are also known by alternate names to the point that their article is titled as such under the naming conventions (Hulk Hogan, Dog, AIDS). Pacman Jones is not his actual name, Adam is. Not only is "Adam 'Pacman' Jones" inclusive (his whole public name is in the box), it's a good middle ground.«»bd(talk stalk) 14:36, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So where is the line drawn? Donald "Don" Davis? Christopher "Chris" Henry? My point is, the infobox, like the article title, is for a player's common name. I don't see how Christopher "Chris" Henry is any different from Adam "Pacman" Jones (a nickname). Chris Henry (wide receiver) is the article title, so his infobox title is Chris Henry. Pacman Jones is the article title, so his infobox title is Pacman Jones. All the other middle names/nicknames that aren't in the article titles are left to the first line of the article. Pats1 14:50, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
With Christopher "Chris" Henry, the "Chris" is an obvious and common derivative of "Christopher", so there is no need to include the "Chris". "Pacman" is not derived from "Adam" or "Jones". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.211.223.170 (talk) 10:44, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Professional TNA Wrestler?

His agent has stated his won't wrestle and thus far, he has not wrestled, so I don't think he should be describled as a "TNA wrestler". Perhaps simply "under contract to TNA Wrestling" would suffice.

On the other hand, the Executive V.P. of TNA said that Pacman will wrestle, in a tag-team. It's also being reported that Pacman has had a wrestling ring installed at his home, where he's working out. For right now, I think that both his agent's denial and the TNA V.P.'s affirmation should be included. --ChandlerH 19:26, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Second Infobox

Shouldn't we have a second infobox in the Pro Wrestling section listing his wrestling stats. I mean Arnold (the governor of California) as three on his page...Politician infobox, Movie star infobox, and a Body Builder infobox. Doesn't it make sense?--Hornetman16 (talk) 03:07, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Mild oppose I think in this case an argument can be made for common name. What he wants to be called is somewhat irrelevent, IMO. Are the news reports, for example, saying that Adam Jones wants to be known as Adam Jones or that Pacman Jones wants to be known as Adam Jones? Narson (talk) 19:15, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment: IINM, the news reports are saying that Pacman Jones wants to be called Adam Jones. (Imus, apparently, hasn't gotten the memo.) --AEMoreira042281 (talk) 16:39, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment 2: The NFL website lists the player's name as Adam Jones, not Pacman Jones. --AEMoreira042281 (talk) 00:47, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Another Mild oppose (for now): If, once the season begins, most media begin to call him Adam (without constant mention of the name Pacman), then I'd support moving the article. Until then, this is really no different than the Orange Bowl, et al.
  • Oppose until usage reflects his wishes. This can be reviewed in a few months. — AjaxSmack 04:12, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Page move reversed

Seeing a distinct lack of consensus for the June 24 move, I have reversed it and restored the article name as Pacman Jones, and will update WP:RM as well. --MCB (talk) 07:19, 12 July 2008 (UTC) He asked not to be called Pacman any more, so why don't we respect his wishes?[reply]

He is now listed as Adam on the Cowboys roster and he said that even though his friends and teammates call him Pacman he wants to be Adam in the media.►Chris NelsonHolla! 16:41, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He's been referred as Pacman Jones in all prior media reports, and unless he starts being called Adam Jones by a majority of the press, there's no reason to move this page. This is a controversial move; discuss this first instead of moving the page against consensus. Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 00:55, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protection was totally unnecessary.►Chris NelsonHolla! 05:08, 30 July 2008 (UTC) It has been a month since that "vote" - and not surprisingly, most of the media refers to him as Adam Jones. In addition, all popular nfl sites, as well as dallascowboys.com and nfl.com list him as "Adam Jones." If the media is the ultimate reasoning behind what we decide is his name (thats another argument, but whatever) it seems as if the media seems to be saying that his name should be Adam Jones. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sag969 (talkcontribs) 20:44, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The fact of the matter is that his name is Adam Jones. He asked not to be referred to by his nickname anymore, and regardless of old media reports, current sports reporters refer to him as "Adam Jones" or, infrequently and to avoid confusion from less knowledgeable readers, "Adam Jones, formerly known as Pacman Jones". On this week's Monday Night Football, he was referred to as Adam Jones throughout the game. Why is this still an issue? When Chad Johnson changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco, the wikipedia page adjusted almost immediately. Add a redirect, but move the page to "Adam Jones (American football). --PoloShot (talk) 18:04, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Considering all media outlets have not taken to calling him Adam Jones, the page should now be moved for the same reason Chad Ocho Cinco's page was.►Chris NelsonHolla! 04:28, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Page protected and the move reversed.

IceFrappe copy paste moved this three times today, which is totally unacceptable. It is only slightly more unacceptable than me blocking the page against editing, which I've done. I personally agree with the move. I urge everyone involved in this thing to step back. Hold an RFC. Take a straw poll here on the talk page. But a copy paste move is not the answer. Please? Dlohcierekim 01:45, 25 September 2008 (UTC) This admin has made it clear on my talkpage that he agrees with this move. Now that there is no visible objection, the move should be performed accordingly.--IceFrappe (talk) 08:10, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seek consensus from those who edit the article. Put in a request at Requested page moves. Contact each editor involved in the prior discussion to see if consensus now exists. Seek opinion of Admin who who protected the page against moves in the first place. Cheers, Dlohcierekim 20:11, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes the page should be moved, but you can't simply copy-and-paste it because then the article loses all its edit history and stuff. It has to be actually moved.►Chris NelsonHolla! 20:46, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Combining Legal issues with Career

This article used to have sections on "Legal Issues" and those issues' "Effect on NFL Career". These duplicated the section on the NFL career and also confused the flow of the narrative. It felt, when you read the article in strict order, like he was arbitrarily suspended for no good reason--- when in fact the NFL was quite justified in its actions. I decided to combine the off-the-field issues with the on-field story. This makes for a depressing tale, but frankly Jones is most famous for his problems off the field, even though he did play very well during his first two years in the league (the only full seasons he has played so far.) Timothy Horrigan (talk) 03:20, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two other things which still need to be fixed are: #1. We typically ascribe the NFL's actions against Jones personally to the commissioner Roger Goodell. Goodell himself doubtless was personally involved, and at a minimum he made several announcements and signed several letters. It seems likely however, that most of the work on Jones's case was done by people at lower pay grades. #2. How many June 2007 shooting incidents at how many strip clubs in how many cities was he implicated in? Right now, we say that Jones was involved with a June 18, 2007 incident at a club in Atlanta--- and later we say that Jones was released by the Cowboys because of his involvement with a June 2007 incident at a club in Las Vegas. Are we mixing up the cities, or were there two different incidents in the same month? Timothy Horrigan (talk) 12:22, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Burned on a touchdown?

I'm guessing fire wasn't involved but this needs to be made clear for people not familiar with the sport. Hack (talk) 19:08, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2018 data missing from table

His playing statistics stop at 2017, although article text talks of 2018. The missing data is available at https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/J/JonePa20.htm

I'm sure I would mess up the HTML table so I'll just point this out for someone who knows how to edit it.2600:6C56:6600:1EA7:219F:B87B:49EB:7F73 (talk) 13:00, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Surely someone with basic HTML competency can fix this. I supplied the link which has the goods.2600:6C56:6600:1EA7:694D:FA90:265A:6C39 (talk) 13:25, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure this is as easy as Silly Putty for anyone with elementary HTML skills. Is the issue that pro-football-reference.com is not definitive?2600:6C56:6600:1EA7:E898:2EDB:3FB1:44E4 (talk) 23:55, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is there some issue with someone doing this utterly straightforward correction?2600:6C56:6600:1ECF:7C6A:B0CB:CBBA:FDF2 (talk) 08:52, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Since it's been so long and no one has acted on it, what I did was added the 2018 season, updated games played, updated INTs, and updated PDs. I did not do the rest and I would welcome assistance. If no one else does it, I will try to get to it later this month. Enigmamsg 21:35, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, due to matters outside my control, I am unable to further assist in this matter. Enigmamsg 21:40, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
