Take Two: Request for change in consensus. Change title to "Franklin Child Abuse Allegations"

"A small group of editors can reach a consensual decision, but when the article gains wider attention, others may then disagree. The original group should not block further change on grounds that they already have made a decision. No one person, and no (limited) group of people, can unilaterally declare that community consensus has changed, or that it is fixed and determined."

The existing title "Franklin Coverup Hoax" is, in the opinion of many who have commented (Gyrofrog, Awfultin, Wayne, Tom1976, Conexion, Apostle 12), fatally biased. To start out saying that the subject material is a "hoax" is indefensible, especially when that point of view is hardly universal. A specially called county grand jury used the word "hoax;" that is all. And there is ample reason to believe that those who comprised the jury had a vested interest in protecting local people.

In the previous section, various editors commented on their support for, or opposition to, a name change to "Franklin Coverup Incident." Those who commented over the space of several days included Sherurcij, PopeFauveXXIII, Wayne, Orange Mike, Apostle12, and Rosicrucian.

Orange Mike came up with a suggestion: How about "Franklin Child Abuse Allegations"? Neutral, takes no position regarding "hoax" or "coverup" claims.

The article is unbiased and does not showcase Porter Novelli or Goddard Claussen. You recently bothered me regarding spelling changes.

If you are referring to the "Gold" article, it was littered with spelling inconsistencies in both forms of English. It has been reverted to its incorrect form in violation of Wiki policy by a seemingly zealous user called "User:Ohnoitsjamie".

When an original form of an article was in one form of English; and amendments added in another form of English. Wikipedia policy is that articles are kept consistently in the original form of English used (rather than separating them into two forms as is the case with Norwegian into Nynorsk and Bokmal).

I'm aware of Wikipedia policy, I've been on it for about 5 years. I can't remember doing anything to the DoD page, but I can see my username on the history (there are two usernames on this PC). I can't even remember visiting that page ever. I've got a good idea who did it; this is a shared computer.

Not a "protest", simply doing what the vast majority of admins would have done before or after the supposed "policy change" of April 4, which was not supported by consensus, and was put through by a small (but vocal) minority faction of editors. As you are participating at WP:AN#Change to the Username Policy regarding confusing usernames, you can see that it's pretty obvious that there was, and is, no consensus to make the changes that you made at the time, and that they do not enjoy universal, or even wide, support. If the change had been proposed in a single place, with a poll mechanism, and with interested parties notified, and it resulted in a consensus, that would be fine, and I'd consider the result a good policy, whatever it might be. Polls are not evil and are very widely used, for everything from RfAs to deletion discussions to policy changes, and have the advantage of being completely transparent and unambiguous. Trying to claim a consensus from a bunch of scattered discussion topics over a period of 8 months, rather than an explicit proposal and poll, does not seem to me to be a very fair, effective, and transparent process. I have seen significant objection to your policy change (KnightLago, EVula, AzaToth, Rlevse, Scetoaux, and myself, just looking at the discussion in WP:AN) and I think the right thing to do is just undo the April 4 change to WP:U, and if you want to make an explicit proposal, make it, and we'll do a proper poll. --MCB (talk) 22:06, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And I've seen significant support from it from even more people who have actually followed the discussion, considered the issues involved, and expressed their opinions on WT:U.

The issues involved are complex; when enforcing the username policy, you have to keep in mind how it interacts with other policies such as the vandalism policy, and now, unified login as well. A poll would just invite people to show up saying "I don't like it, it makes it harder to just click buttons in TWINKLE and forget about it". Wikipedia policy is not just a popularity contest, it's an ongoing discussion. And it's been my experience that talking to people on WT:U, with all the context available, tends to make them less gung-ho about blocking people for "confusion". Look at how it happened with Ryan Postlethwaite, who endorsed "confusion" blocks for a long time, but now supports the new policy and has made tools for it such as the holding pen.

Consensus isn't about numbers, it's about discussion, and you haven't held up your own end of the discussion. A brief flareup on WP:AN where most people are unaware of the issues involved isn't enough to undo months of work. Instead of quibbling over what a consensus is, why don't you join the discussion and justify your version of the username policy? rspeer / ɹəədsɹ 04:43, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm happy to join the discussion, though I've certainly made my views clear in the past (on your user talk page, among other places). I don't think the policy needs any particular change, though the one thing I'd like to see, and may work on, is a set of different {{uw-ublock}} templates that clarify the reason for the block and the degree to which the user is welcome to return. (One example, I forget who drafted it but I thanked them, is {{uw-spamublock}}.) The template for a confusing username would intentionally be non-BITEy, and just tell the user that they're welcome to come back with a new name. Templates for spammers, hatemongers, disrupters, etc., less so. That wasn't a simple revert. You created a new version of the policy by picking and choosing edits to undo, and you haven't discussed why that version would be an improvement over anything. Why would you undo just those edits, and not all the other edits that have ever been made to the policy based on discussion? It wasn't a literal revert (rollback), it was an undo, and I undid your change of April 4 (plus one edit that added to your change). That returned the policy to the status quo ante, which is what I suggested in WP:AN, said I was going to do, and then did. The other subsequent edits were housekeeping changes (if that's not the case, please feel free to point that out and fix it; I'm certainly capable of making mistakes). It's exactly the same as when you remove old vandalism from an article where someone has fixed typos subsequent to that -- you don't revert to the version before the vandalism, because that would remove all the fixes, which is harmful. You undo, either using the undo function, or manually. This seems elementary to me. Done. I'm three weeks ahead of you there. The specific proposal came a few edits later, and you would still see it on the talk page if you were to read it. WT:UAA was notified both before and after the discussion. The result was not a resounding unanimous consensus, as it never is when it comes to policy, but it was certainly strong enough consensus to make the change. I confess I don't know enough about CAT:TEMP to understand the controversy: are pages in that category automatically deleted by a bot at some future date? A pointer to the discussion would be useful; there was reference to a thread in WP:AN but it appears to have been archived, unless I'm missing it. It's unclear whether he (or others) is objecting in substance (arguing that the pages should not be deleted at all), or objecting regarding process (arguing that they shouldn't be tagged until the user is blocked). I have created a new page, List of Dungeons & Dragons 3.0 edition monsters, which which would be a proper destination to merge and/or redirect the article to. I understand that a bank of its size and reputation can come under much scrutiny through Wikipedia, but such a bank also deserves more verifiable information on such a widely used forum such as Wikipedia. Also, do you have any guides on how to make the page more COI compliant. I looked at the Times, Newsweek, WSJ, even Times of India pages and they all use the same kind of text and language, and they all are promoting the periodical. How can I do the same? I am wondering how I can comply with the clauses if I cannot make edits to the pages for ethical reasons. The periodical has been in publication for decades and it would be great to have a wikipedia information page for it.

Hi, not sure why SmackBot would remove three valid stub-sorting tags as it did to Pink Saturday, in this edit. Is there a rule about too many stub types (in which case at least one or more valid ones should be left)? I checked on those stub types as well, and they do not seem to be deprecated. Please advise. Thanks. If I understand your response, it means that the metric used is AWB's, and not SmackBot's directly. If that's the case, perhaps (if it's not too ambitious) you might consider programming SmackBot to include the {{expand}} tag when it removes certain stub templates due to article length, per this from WP:STUB: "Many articles still marked as stubs have in fact been expanded beyond what is regarded as stub size. If an article is too large to be considered a stub but still needs expansion, replace the stub template with an {{expand}} template (no article should contain both a stub template and an expand template)." I've relisted some entries removed by User:Shereth from WP:UAA -- including two that had been originally removed by User:Rspeer and re-removed by him -- and it appears he's editwarring to exclude those two on the grounds that "two admins had already rejected them", namely himself and Rspeer. Maybe they should have been removed, but he's clearly not the one who should be deciding that. There is one easy way for me to relax and not be so stressed about protecting newbies from username blocks: I'd like you to stop functionally undoing everything I do. If I remove some names, you assume I must be wrong and put them back (with a haughty message on my talk page, no less). If I stick up for a new user with a clever CS joke as a name, you stick up for the edit warrior who got him blocked and say that you can't possibly assume good faith from someone with a 40-character name. If I organize months of discussion toward a consensus about how to reasonably apply the username policy, you try to break up the consensus by subjecting it to a poll, and then when you don't get the poll you want you go around encouraging admins to flout the new policy.

If I try to make WT:UAA stick to the issues, you put your personal conflict with me on center stage.

I don't consider it a good thing that you can't assume good faith from a user such as User:GUID-FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF. Maybe if you had read his user page you would get why the name is clever, but really, it shouldn't matter whether you personally get it or not. The current situation where hundreds of users hold a veto over every new username (and basically anyone can get a username blocked if they don't like it) is ridiculous, and it's been observed as such by people outside the English Wikipedia community. Maybe our community wouldn't be shrinking if we didn't have hundreds of bouncers at the door.

I wish I understood what your goal was for Wikipedia, and why it's so important to you that it's worth sacrificing the newbies who get in the way of it. Maybe you can help me understand. I see that you have blocked User:PAHouseGOP, and I would like to speak up on behalf of him. I do believe that this editor may have started as a political spammer, but he has since changed his ways and is well on his way to becoming a good editor. In fact, his work has been extremely helpful--expanding biographical coverage of republican members of the PA House of Representatives. I would hate to scare off this editor (who apparently loves the tedium required to do that many pages) just because of a bad username.

If you look at his talk page you can see that several editors (including myself and User talk:Montco) have been in contact with him over some of his actions. If nothing else, his username indicated a bias and COI, and we have been extra watchful over his work; we corrected and cleaned up some sloppy edits and impermissible actions (like adding copyvio text). This account seems to have made limited edits but most of the edits made are on articles also edited by one of the above three editors. Also the Pds0101 account is starting to become quite prominent on the South Korea article, which is the most edited article for all of the above.

As far as I was concerned there were 4 accounts used by the same person, the Lakshmix and Wondergirls accounts have been indef blocked, but the Ziggymaster and Pds0101 have not - while the user might deserve to have one account, the use of multiple accounts is making it seem as if certain consensus exists, when in fact it is just one editor.

What do you think? Should the Ziggymaster account have been blocked as well? Do you think Pds0101 is the same editor?

Hello... FYI, I've had to revert your addition to the Tennant article (regarding his supposed engagement). I'm not crazy about doing so, but text regarding the (possible) relationship with Moffat has been problematic for a very long time. Many IPs and new editors have added material based on rumours they have seen, but there has never been a reliable source to confirm it. I reviewed the Mail article, and could not see any indication of where they sourced the report from. I also did a search on Wikipedia and found a sizeable discussion that suggests we should not use the Mail as a source without having other reliable sources to confirm what they are saying. My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. This year's 2013 SF Wiknik will be held at Lake Merritt, next to Children's Fairyland in Oakland. This event will be co-attended by people from the hyperlocal Oakland Wiki. May crosspollination of ideas and merriment abound!

• The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
• Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. We hope you can join us today, Wednesday, from 6 p.m. on, at our July Bay Area WikiSalon. This month only, we are going to be at Noisebridge, a hackerspace/makerspace 1.5 blocks from the 16th & Mission BART station (see the link for directions). Some of us will be working on the Wikipedia article on basic income. All info here. Some good news - we do not have to be as strict about advance RSVP at Noisebridge, so bring spontaneous guests! (Registering ahead of time is still helpful, as always, as it will help us plan ahead.)

Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

• Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. The "WikiSpeech" was the subject of prominent national media attention in 2015, and more than half of her classmates contributed to writing and editing the commencement address via a wiki.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Also, don't be shy about hitting us up if you have thoughts on speakers or wiki-related activities.
