Ergun Caner, within the scope of WikiProject Turkey?

Should Ergun Caner's article be under the scope of WikiProject Turkey? At least once he said he was "100 % Turkish", so I think so. OTOH, the "Vikipedi" version needs to be expanded. Please take a look if you speak Turkish. --Filius Rosadis (talk) 22:42, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Problem about User:Kansas Bear

i really dont care if he served both PKK or ASALA, but, by looking his contributions its not hard to find out about his personality. yes, he is against Turkic civilization (with his every edit). he remove (and replace them) all the facts and valuable sources in the pages related with Turkic civilization. he glorify ASALA, PKK and all the terrorist organisations againts the Turkish civilians and its wealth. enough is enough, now he claim Sari Gelin is an Armenian song! stop him! --Alpha Beta Gaga (talk) 12:21, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Derya Büyükuncu

I don't understand Turkish and the google translation is hard to follow, but is there a controversy about Derya Büyükuncu that should be in his article, as referenced here? Is Sporx.com a reliable source? I have just removed a long, detailed, unreferenced list of his (mainly junior) swimming results from the article, but if he is aiming to compete at his 6th Olympic Games it would be a remarkable achievement. Unsatisfactory ranking

According to Wikipedia:Database reports/WikiProject watchers, a list of projects by the no. of watchers, neither Turkey Project nor Ottoman Empire Project is in the displayed top 172 project lists. According to Wikipedia:Database reports/WikiProjects by changes, a list of top 2194 projects by the no.of edits, Project Turkey ranks 303. and Project Ottoman Empire ranks 755. place. I think these two projects deserve better rankings. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:49, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Pentagram (Mezarkabul album)

The article Pentagram (Mezarkabul album) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of meeting WP:NALBUMS, a couple of minor mentions in published (gBooks) works found. No references available in the Turkish article

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Istanbul turkish being the standard

user http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Nipsonanomhmata has removed the reference to Istanbul turkish being the standard in Cypriot Turkish. I reverted him and he is asking for a reference. Wikipedia turkish language article also states the same without providing a reference. Now this is possibly a very basic thing for you and you will find it rather ridiculous to have to provide a reference but if someone is aware of a reference in English or can be bothered to translate something from turkish it will be really great. Cheers Mavros (talk)

I don't know why the name İstanbul has been removed. But in this age of telecommunications, İstanbul Turkish is not as distinct as it was used to be. After all, everybody watch the same TV programs and listen to the same newsreel and there is too little dialect difference to distinguish İstanbul Turkish. Personally, I don't oppose to use alternative names in the lead sentence. I only oppose double standards. Aziz Nesin etc.

A source said his surname implies a Tatar background. But I've never heard that Aziz Nesin didn't adopt Crimean Tatarness. Do we have to consider him a Crimean Tatar ? This problem is similar to the problem on "Who is Kurd ?". As we know, İsmet İnönü, Bülent Ecevit etc. were Kurdish descent, but nobody (except extremists) considers them as Kurdish people. • Classifying people according to their genetic background is racism. National background depends on the sense of belonging and mother tongue. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:16, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
If you examine the source listed closely, the "surname implies" is directed at various other public figures (for example Fahrettin Cureklibatur etc.) and not Aziz Nesin, however what it clearly stated is him belonging to the Crimean Tatar community in Turkey. Therefore Takabeg seems to misunderstand the source, and yet insists on his misinterpreted version. And no, maybe the laws in Turkey allow for the second part of the above statement to be true, everywhere else people are classified based on heritage. Experienced editors with specialist regional knowledge urgently wanted

The Arbitration Committee is seeking to appoint additional people to the CheckUser and Oversight teams, in particular people with specialist knowledge.

Because of increasing activity in the South Asian, Southeast Asian, or Middle Eastern regions, CheckUser applications are particularly sought from people who not only meet our general requirements but also are familiar with the ISPs and typical editing patterns of any of these regions.

Successful candidates are likely to be regularly available and already familiar with local and global processes, policies, and guidelines especially those concerning CheckUser and Oversight. CheckUser candidates are expected to be technically proficient, and previous experience with OTRS is beneficial for Oversight candidates. All candidates must at least 18 years of age; have attained legal majority in their jurisdiction of residence; and be willing to identify to the Wikimedia Foundation prior to receiving permissions. If you think you may be suitably qualified, please see the appointments page for further information. The application period is scheduled to close 18 September 2011.  Roger Davies talk 15:49, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Not so obvious then? From the start, the section heading: "Ottoman rule and national awakening". This is very typical of a nationalist approach to Ottoman history, especially among Balkan states: Ottoman rule was just a mistake so that period of history should be skipped as fast as possible, maybe only to be examined as how that particular nation could get out of it, not in itself, which was, of course not at all interesting. Read the section and you will see it is imbibed with nationalism. Filanca (talk) 20:19, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

The Turkish alternative name of Van Cat (which is not same as Turkish Van) isVan Kedisi. Even if the term Türk Van Kedisi is used in some website (unreliable sources), there is no evidence that the Turkish authority named or add the word Türk. Argeşo or Yasan ?

Who was the minister of Nafia (Public Works) in 1920-1921 ? The first minister was Ismail Fazil Pasha, but who was second ?

Takabeg (talk) 03:30, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Quite a few sources just name "Ömer Lütfi Bey", and it is easy to see how two individuals with the same name and such similar backgrounds can get confused. This source even manages to identify the two, referring to the chimera "Ömer Lütfi Argeşo (Yasan)"! Almost all sources available online that make the distinction appear to agree on Argeşo, though, and this one, Çağdaş Türkiye (1987), even gives specific dates for his (Argeşo's) vekillik: "27.12.1920–24.1.1921, 24.1.1921, [sic] 24.1.1921–16.5.1921, 19.5.1921–17.11.1921". (The search term was the only way I saw to make Google's "snippet view" reveal the first part of this text, and this one gives the missing bit.) So I'd bet on Ömer Lütfi Argeşo. This source (Birinci Meclis'te muhalefet: İkinci Grup, 1994), however, agrees with Türk Parlamento Tarihi.  --Lambiam 10:29, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Vedat Akman

Hi, the above article is currently at AfD (and being vehemently defended by a slate of SPAs). It seems clear there has been lots of COI type editing and contributions to the debate and article. However, that is not what I am soliciting people here about. There is a page on the website of the subject showing some coverage in the media. Perhaps someone from this project, with good knowledge of WP's policies and guidelines) could have a look at this and see whether there is anything in there that would establish notability? Extensive work needed on "regions" of Turkey

As you know, in "Districts of Turkey" template , the provinces of Turkey are distributed to seven geographically defined regions of Turkey. This is technically wrong, as the borders of those regions do not overlap with that of provinces: See this map showing the discrepancies in borders. This is addressed in the article, "List of regions of Turkey", claiming provinces are to be considered in the region where most of their territory are located. Although it's with good faith, this solution is imperfect.

So here's my suggestion:

1. Introduce accurate content to the geographically-defined regions article. The article in Turkish Wikipedia, while it seems very basic, is on the right tract: Türkiye'nin coğrafi bölgeleri.

2. If there is need to have a larger division than provinces, use "NUTS of Turkey" instead. The Turkish Statistical Institute does that. Again, the article in Turkish Wikipedia seems solid: Türkiye'nin İBBS'si.

I'm very eagerly awaiting response. Regards. --Mttll (talk) 02:20, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

About half of Muğla Province is in Mediterranean and the other half is in Aegean Region. Most of Bilecik Province is in the Central Anatolia, but the capital of the province is in Marmara Province. The provinces of Kahramanmaraş, Şırnak, Erzurum, Konya and some others are problematic in this respect. For the last 8 months or so, I've concentrated on creating articles about towns (belde) of Turkey and I've found a solution to this problem. I categorize both for the Province and the Geographical region. For the template notes can be used for districts which are not in the same geographical region of the province capital. (Like "Note:Köyceğiz is in Mediterranean Region".)Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 05:58, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
So what do you think of Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics of Turkey, which completely overlap with the provincial borders? --Mttll (talk) 00:38, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm afraid I haven't seen your point. Are you proposing to use nuts instead of geographical regions ? Well as far as I can see nuts are used for statistics and don't really convey any information. Geographical regions on the other hand are useful to summerize the main geographical features and climate. So I think geographical regions should be kept in the template. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:21, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
What information are you seeing in this article, or in this template for that matter? Geographical regions of Turkey are being used outside their purpose (statistical) and in a technically inaccurate way at that. --Mttll (talk) 22:04, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
On 2008 July 8, User:Univer had added the following sentence: "Provinces, by custom, are accepted to be located in the regions where most of their territory remains." So the there is nothing wrong with the list. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:30, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
I had already addressed that in my first post in this section. The wrong thing is the subdivisions of seven geographical regions of Turkey are not provinces, but subregions that are based on river basins, mountains etc.; and that there is a way after all, an official one at that, to group Turkish provinces that completely overlap with the official borders. --Mttll (talk) 13:55, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

"Turks", should it be a disambiguation of "Turk" or should it redirect to the "Turkish people"?

Hi everyone, I'd like to bring your attention to the recent debate at Talk:Turks. "Turks" has been a redirect to "Turkish people" but there is a minor edit war/debate as to whether it should direct there or redirect to the "Turk" disambiguation instead. I for one believe that "Turks" should redirect to the "Turkish people" and that the disambiguation of "Turk" is sufficent. My main reason for this is that most offical censuses, including that of Turkic nations, refer to the Turkish people as "Turks" within their data. Turco85 (Talk) 17:26, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

"a 13th-century Persian Muslim poet, jurist, theologian, and Sufi mystic."
to "a 13th-century Muslim poet, jurist, theologian, and Sufi mystic of Persian literature. 81.213.117.125 (talk) 21:38, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

I believe the Yakut American should be put in some template related with this group for that they are more easy localized in the articles of ethic groups of United States and, because they are culturally Turkish, I believe more appropriate to include in the template "American Middle East". I would wanted to get their views on the incorporation of the American ethnic group to that template.- --Isinbill (talk) 10:28, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

American Middle East for Sakha people ? No, Sakha people are from Sakha Republic which is located at about 5000 km distance to Middle east. They have nothing to do with Middle east.Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 12:16, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
and, however, they are culturally Turkish and, if I not included in that template, where I include? I see no other ethnic group that has a relationship with them. --Isinbill (talk) 00:22, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Middle east refers to a loosely defined geographic region. For ethnicity the article already has a Template:Turkic states. But you can also add Template:Turkic topics. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 06:45, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Separating town articles and district articles

Recently, in an effort to improve and broaden the coverage of the geographical and administrative features of Şebinkarahisar District, I separated the article about the town Şebinkarahisar, from the article about the district Şebinkarahisar District. This process of separating towns from their larger eponymous districts (communes, municipalities, etc.) has taken place in the Wikipedia in other countries. But, apparently, there is not consensus that such separation is a good idea, see Talk:Şebinkarahisar District#Merge. So, I thought that I'd bring the discussion here for everyone's input. --Bejnar (talk) 18:44, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

This is not a process that need be done all-at-once, it should be done on an article by article basis. Also, it is not necessarily needed in all cases, but is more appropriate for rural districts where there can be large differences between the town and the district. In the case of city districts there is often no difference, with the boundaries and administration being the same. --Bejnar (talk) 18:47, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Well almost all Turkish districts have articles (though some only stub) in WP. These articles generally cover the district as well as the district center with the same name. Splitting the articles is certainly possible. But creating about 1000 new articles requires a huge amount of work. Expanding the stubs instead of creating new articles may be a better alternative. Istanbul or İstanbul

Whenever I write İstanbul, somebody immediatelly changes it to Istanbul remarking that the capital dotted İ is not used in English. İstanbul (and İzmir for that matter) is a proper noun and I don't think that the proper nouns are translateble. If the keyboard permits (which is case of Turkish editors) the letter İ should not be changed to I in the English texts. Please check the following articles. Bâlea Lake, Nové Zámky, Hans Christian Ørsted, Jönköping, Évora District and uncountable other examples. Do we have Ø, É etc in English ? Then why do we have to change the name of İstanbul just because English alphabet lacks İ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:35, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

They do not change the letter due to the lack of an "İ" in the English alphabet. They change it because the English name of "İstanbul" is "Istanbul" just as Turkish name of "London" is "Londra". Istanbul is the correct form whenever you write in English. Filanca (talk) 20:33, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

It's like Vienna vs Wien or Florence vs Firenze. It's simply based on a long history of tradition. For that matter, İstanbul is rendered hu:Isztambul and Vienna is hu:Bécs in Hungarian for the same historical/traditional reasons. Teemeah 편지 (letter) 13:45, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Help with an article?

Hi! I need a little help because I'm running into a language barrier with an article. I'm editing the article for the film Ölü Bölgeden Fısıltılar and I've done a decent job with the sources I could find using Google Translate. The big issue is that the translation programs have obvious limitations. There is another editor (User:Gulgun G) also working on the page, but English is not his first language and so there's a language barrier there as well. (I think he speaks Turkish, but I'm not 100% certain.) Can anyone help out? I know that this technically falls more under the banner of the film wikiproject than the Turkey WP, but I thought that I would be more likely to find someone that could better understand the sources in the article and help flesh out the article more.Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 11:32, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Template:Largest cities in Turkey

I have a dispute with a colleague about Template:Largest cities in Turkey. Main problem is that Mr. Maurice is adding the population numbers for provinces and not for the cities. He uses Turkish Statistical Institute Address-based calculation from December, 2012.[1] as source, while I use TurkStat. Address-based calculation from December, 2012.[2] By now, it gets rather annoying and except a long talkpage, I see no progress at all. A second, minor, issue is a disagreement about the use of regions (his choice) and provinces (the long standing consensus). What is best here? The Banner talk 00:57, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I found this. Not sure how many of them were Serbian or what their numbers are today:

During the period from 1821 to 1922 alone, Justin McCarthy estimates that the ethnic cleansing of Ottoman Muslims led to the death of several million individuals and the expulsion of a similar number.

[6] Cavann (talk) 20:20, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
I don't have a source on Serbs living in Turkey. However, there are sources of non Muslim minority groups in Turkey and Serbs are not listed separately in those lists. According to the Treaty of Lausanne, there were only three notable non Muslim groups in Turkey in 1920s; Greeks, Jews and Armenians. It is hard to believe that millions of Serbs living in Turkey go unnoticed in the conference in which entente powers were present. Besides how can we explain the migration of millions of Serbs to a Muslim city ? Frankly speaking, I don't believe it. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 15:26, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks to user Sokac121 for giving me a heads up on the thread. As I previously commented on the Serbs talk page, user Правичност's news magazine "source" which speaks of a staggering number of 9 million Serbs in Turkey is among the worst nationalist POV I've come across in ex-Yugoslav online magazines lately. It basically claims the Slavic Muslims in Turkey to be of a "forgotten" and "suppressed" Serb ancestry, when in fact a vast majority of Slavic Muslims in Turkey descend from Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks), and Pomaks, which emigrated following the collapse of the Ottoman empire. As a matter of fact, the National Security Council of Turkey (Milli Güvenlik Kurulu) estimates as many as 2,000,000 Turkish citizens having Bosniak (Boşnaklar) ancestry. Naturally however, in Serb nationalist circuits Bosniaks are really only "converted Serbs" without their own identity or history, and Bosnia has really only always been "Serbian". There is consequently not a shred of credibility in the source which draws on the private, nationalist, reflections made by the president of a minor Belgrade-based non-accredited organization, who even for a moment slips away to talk about the "Catholic Serbs" in Croatia (i.e. Croats). Eagerly pushing such nasty nationalist sources on wikipedia without discretion should see user Правичност subjected to some serious review. Praxis Icosahedron ϡ (TALK) 12:45, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
There were Bosnians fleeing the wars during 90's, Balkan Muslims fleeing from the Balkan wars in 19th-20th centuries (don't think Milli Güvenlik Kurulu took this into account since it is so old). Before then there were population transfers in Ottoman Empire [8]. But I don't think a number, such as 9 million, can be established. Cavann (talk) 19:25, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Let's make one point clear. Are we referring to Bosnians or Serbs ? I am not in the position to decide on the ethnical background of Serbs and Bosnians. But when the name Serb is mentioned most people take as Serbs of Serbia and not Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the past, being Muslim some Bosnians migrated to Turkey (but not in millions). However, I don't think Serbs (other than devshirme) ever though of settling in Turkey. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 07:06, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Whoa whoa, stirring up confusion here. What I ment to clarify is that the source which speaks of "9 million Serbs in Turkey" is not a credible one and based on POV nationalist views by the interviewee that Bosniaks (and Slavic Muslims) are really only converted Serbs. Compare such inflammatory rhetoric with a hypothetical article claiming Kurds as "Mountain Turks": it deserves little attention. Thus, what the article ("source") suggests is not that millions of Serbs (Orthodox Christians) live in Turkey today, but that the millions of Slavic Muslims in Turkey which are of, partial or full, Bosniak ancestry are in fact "really" Serbs, and consequently the whole Bosniak nation "really" Serb. Needless to say, it qualifies as severe nationalist jargon. The Milli Güvenlik Kurulu estimates 2,000,000 Bosniaks in Turkey, the majority of which trace their origin to migrations from the Bosnia Eyalet in the 19th and early 20th century: this is not to say that millions of Bosniaks emigrated in those times, rather their community in Turkey has expanded through natural growth since then. Praxis Icosahedron ϡ (TALK) 12:32, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
Let's not forget emigrations from Montenegro to Turkey due to the genocides against the Bosniak population there largely until World War II, namely Kolašin, Šehovići, Pljevlja, etc... I should probably point out that there are a lot of Bosniaks in Turkey originally from Sandžak, esp. Novi Pazar but that fun fact is more-or-less WP:OR. --Prevalis (talk) 23:07, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
Sandžak, and the eponymous Sanjak of Novi Pazar, was a region within the Eyalet of Bosnia until 1864. Praxis Icosahedron ϡ (TALK) 23:38, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

I think that the Bosniacs in Turkey assimilated. Number of 2,000,000 million is too high. We must not forget that from the Balkans to Turkey came people who have been Orthodox and Catholics and become Muslims. Not all from the Balkans in Turkey Bosniaks .(Hersekzade Ahmed Pasha converting to Islam)--Sokac121 (talk) 12:50, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

The Turkish government estimates 2,000,000 Bosniaks within its borders without going into the detail of things. Bosnia and Albania were the only two regions in Ottoman Europe where large-scale conversions to Islam took place, with the name for the Bosnian Muslim nation being Bosniak ("Bosnaklar" in the Turkish language). Hersekzade Ahmed Pasha stems from medieval Bosnia as do obviously Bosnian Muslims, there is nothing that would separate them from him. I'm afraid your post does not make much sense. I see praxis likes to acuse me of nationalism around wikipedia alot.. interesting complex... while that source isnt actually "mine" as you written, it was ther ebe4 i even got to wikipedia. I believe your nationalistic ideals of 2 million bosniaks in turkey (more than in bosnia) arent any better. And talking about Bosniak entity... what...? Bosniaks started to exist in the 70s, but mainly accepted that name after the 90s wars... so dont make up history... befor etat names bosniak, Bošnjak, bošnjanin Bosanac- bosnian or whatever... were all connected to settlers of bosnia, not a ethnic group. Dont forget that all kings of bosnia have crowned as kings of Serbs... Bosniaks are by ancestry Serbs and croats who got turkified and converted to Islam during the ottoman rule... just like some Bulgarians, Albanians and others did in the balkans.... Turks didnt only come to convert a group called bosniaks in todays teritory of ex-yugoslavia :) ... they were converting serbs and croats and other christians... dont forget that in french language they dont know the term "Bosnian" but only bosniak- so they name settlers of bosnia as -Bosniaque Serbes, Bosniaque Croates and Bosniaque de Musulmans--- another proof that bosniak is just a name for a settler regionall affilation not an ethnical one... but lets leave that beside... the source isnt reliable for me either, just i beliee atleast few hundered thousand people have serbian ancestry in turkey --- eventough they are mostly assimilated, as wella s bosniaks, albanians and others.... but millions is a pumped up number perhaps up to million or 2 million of all ancestral groups of islamized christians from the balkans. (Правичност (talk) 01:52, 16 May 2013 (UTC))
It is very funny to see that Šokac accuse someone for nationalism. This article is without any doubt sensationalist article that try to make some completely unrealistic maximum numbers. I mean, this article is of tabloid character without any serious foundation. Each speakerof Serbo-Croatian language see it easily. I think it would be better to try to find some official data. But I think that Turkey do not make census data on ethnicity if I am well informed? Maybe you can find some scientific papers on that subject? Basically, we should try to find some reliable data and this article is not reliable source. When it comes to history that user Правичност mention, I think it is totally irrelevant for this issue (number of people in community). This may be important in section History in that article because it may lead to some conflicts among editors of articles about Serbs and Bosniaks in Turkey. It is true that national feelings of Bosniaks developed relatively late (like among Austrians or Macedonians). But I still think that historical data on some important people should be used by both articles. Is is connected with both present day communities in Turkey. But members of WP Turkey will know to give more advice on that if that become necessary. All the best.--MirkoS18 (talk) 14:55, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
I just want to add one hint to user Nedim Ardoğa question (Let's make one point clear. Are we referring to Bosnians or Serbs ?). I guess you really think when you ask: Are we referring to Bosniaks or Serbs ? There are Bosnians and Bosniaks. Bosnians are people from Bosnia and that term include Bosniaks, Bosnian Serbs, Bosnian Croats and others. At the same time Bosniaks are only Muslims from Bosnia and one of three ethnic groups. It was just one note so that we know what we are talking about (: .--MirkoS18 (talk) 15:07, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
@ nationalist user Правичност: it is amusing to see how your little objection to my "accusation" is followed by blatant nationalist drivel. Ridiculously enough, you just pleaded guilty to the accusation whether you like it or not. Despite your miserable destitution of knowledge and logical thinking, I shall for a brief while commit to curing your "interesting complex" as you refer to it. 1) You have continuously defended the "source" in the edit history regardless of who introduced it. 2) The French word "Bosniaque" derives from Bosnjak (Bosniak) and not Bosnian (Bosanac); the name for Bosnians (as opposed to Bosniaks) being "Bosniens" in the French language. So much for your familiarity with the language in question, Mr. Greater Serbia. 3) All ethnonyms were strictly political and/or territorial before the dawn of nationalism during the 19th century which formed the current national states, including those of Croats and Serbs. As such, Bosniak nationalism did lag a few decades behind their irredentist neighbors, Croatia and Serbia, which were nothing short of instrumental in hampering the Bosniak identity from the very beginning. Up until the late 19th century, all Bosnians had identified as Bosniaks regardless of faith. It does not matter if this was "only" in a political or territorial sense since the names "Serb" and "Croat" did not possess any additional meaning either during this period. Naturally, being the nationalist you are, you would like to assume that the name "Serb" has always had the same nationalistic appeal as it does today. Well it hasn't. As a matter of fact, Christian Bosnian(k)s had not described themselves as either Serbs or Croats before the nationalist movements of 19th-century Serbia and Croatia seized the Orthodox and Catholics in Bosnia, respectively; the Muslim Bosnian(k)s, being the dominating and ruling class of Bosnia, were of course much stronger (and prouder) to reject their neghbours' claims. Simply put, there is no historic occurrence or relevance of Serb or Croat identities in Bosnia. There was only a Bosnian(k) identity which medieval and, subsequently, Ottoman Bosnia was based upon; if this was a territorial or political name is irrelevant since no ethnonyms had acquired a national dimension before the dawn of nationalism in the 19th century. 4) The source of 2 million Bosniaks in Turkey is not allegedly the result of my imagination but an estimate commissioned by the Turkish government itself, and that is that. 5) The conversion rates in countries other than Bosnia and Albania were negligible throughout the Ottoman Balkans; there were no significant numbers of Serbs or Croats embracing Islam. Hence, the Muslim Slavs in Turkey overwhelmingly trace their origin to Bosnia, i.e. they are Bosniaks. 6) If you should wish, I suspect, to further defile this discussion by bringing up your take on the Slav migrations of the 6th and 7th centuries to the Balkans, please save your breathe. The early "Serbs" and "Croats" were two small, but powerful, non-slavic Iranian tribes which ruled over the Slavs living on parts of the territory of modern-day Serbia and Croatia; thus they merely passed on their "Serb" and "Croat" names to their Slav subjects. This event is identical with the Bulgarians which adopted their ethnonym from the much less-numerous Turkic Bulgars that ruled them. Bosnia was a remote and mountainous region unaffected by these events, and so the Bosnians attached their identity to their homeland rather. Ever since its formation in the middle ages, Bosnia has been a distinct and separate country from Serbia and Croatia with its own identity and history. Reading any of the seven or so contemporary scholarly publications on the history of Bosnia will make this clear. Even a text book printed in the former Yugoslavia will not obscure this fact, however what has happened since the wars of the early 90s is the unleashing of repressed Serb and Croat nationalist chauvinism, every now and then rearing its ugly head on wikipedia. Praxis Icosahedron ϡ (TALK) 03:32, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
I would like to thank MirkoS18 for showing me the difference between Bosnian and Bosniak. (The western press however usually call Bosniaks as Moslems while calling Serbs and Croats by their natinal identity.) Well in Turkey I've seen people of Bosniak origin but I've never seen people of Serbian origin. Of course what I've personally seen is not a statistics. Nevertheless the figures given above are no way reliable.Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:01, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
@ Nedim Ardoğa: I'm sorry if I couldn't help you understand the difference between Bosnian and Bosniak through my earlier posts. However, this difference is just a terminological one since etymologically Bosnian (Bosanac) and Bosniak (Bosnjak) mean the same: a native of Bosnia. More specifically, Bosniaks consider themselves Bosnians in an ethnic sense, whereas Christian Bosnians ethnically consider themselves either Serbs or Croats and Bosnians only in a regional/territorial sense. This ethnic configuration has its roots beginning in the second half of the 19th century when Bosnians became ethnically divided based on religious belonging. There is not more than that to it. In Serb- and to a lesser extent Croat-dominated Yugoslavia Bosniaks were not recognized as a distinct nation and were instead defined as Muslims by nationality and thus simply known as "Muslims" up until the dissolution of Yugoslavia. This inaccurate terminology (since Bosniaks are an ethnic group greater than the sum of their religion) was overtaken by the English-speaking world out of practicality during the 90s wars. This is slowly being rectified with the major western medias (BBC, CNN, AP and so forth) gradually coming to use "Bosniak". I don't know which figures you conclude as unreliable - but the figure of 9 million Serbs is obviously downright bizarre as already explained. The number of 2 million people of full or partial Bosniak ancestry in Turkey is produced by the Turkish government and as reliable as can be; we definitely lack the authority to reject it. You guys will surely get a kick out of this one. Before I get yelled at for discrimination and whatever nonsense you want to throw at me, I'm just stating the situation as it is, from the eyes of countless people I've interacted with. Yes, personal research but still nevertheless valid. Back on point, Muslims in the former Yugoslavia tend to align themselves more toward Bosniaks because it gives them a sense of belonging. Bosniak has now come to stand for, in a sense anyway, a Slavic Muslim from the former Yugoslavia. Some people actually prefer to call themselves Bosniak because saying you're Muslim is like taboo for some. Political correctness if you will. Now, let's be real here for a second, Serbs and Montenegrins are predominantly Eastern Orthodox, Croats predominantly Roman Catholic; they all have negative attitudes toward the presence of Muslims, and they rightly do so given the history. Do you really think they would simply be OK with the idea that Muslims call themselves Serbs, Montenegrins, Croats? Hundred years ago, they'd commit genocide or chase you away. Now, the situation is somewhat different, largely thanks to the Communist society of Yugoslavia but even so, Muslims still feel alienated in the very countries they call home and have called home for centuries. Back to Bosniaks, Bosniaks are a Muslim-majority ethnic group, the largest in the former Yugoslavia. Muslims align themselves to the Bosniaks based on the theory that united we stand, divided we fall. Bosniaks have truly made a lot of progress towards the better treatment of citizens of the Muslim faith throughout the former Yugoslavia, again together, but these sentiments that have existed for centuries continue to live, plaguing the Bosniaks. On a side-note, before you say Bosniaks aren't all Muslim, that most are atheist, I'm pretty sure most of them were Muslim or originate from Muslim families. Personal names and surnames are a dead giveaway. In the end, it's not even about ethnic affiliations but rather the religious pretext and what faith you believe in that determines your ethnic affiliation. And that, my friends, has been and will always be the underlying problem of the former Yugoslavia. --Prevalis (talk) 07:35, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Weird comment: they all have negative attitudes toward the presence of Muslims, and they rightly do so given the history - what kind of history? The Ottoman Empire was liberal predecessor of its time, in fact the Serbian Orthodox Church grew immensely under its rule. Serb and Croat nationalists fuel hatred towards Bosniaks by deliberately portraying a darker picture of the Ottoman period than actual; it's called propaganda you know. The decision of a large number of Bosnians (i.e. Bosniaks) to embrace Islam (simply due to the fact that Christianity wasn't established in medieval Bosnia) is their right and they shouldn't be incriminated because of it: the religious fundamentalism by Serb and, to a lesser extent, Croat Christians in the region to "return" the Bosniaks to their rightful Christian origins makes little sense and has ultimately little basis in history. Bosniak has come to stand for a Slavic Muslim simply in the same way "Serb" or "Croat" came to stand for an Orthodox South Slav or Catholic South Slav in the 19th century. There is no qualitative difference here. Another weird comment: Do you really think they would simply be OK with the idea that Muslims call themselves Serbs, Montenegrins, Croats? - Muslims (i.e. Bosniaks) don't want to call themselves Serb, Croats or Montenegrins (at least not those in Bosnia) because of the simple they fact they are not; a Serb or Croat ethnic identity is foreign to them and only made its way into Bosnia in the 19th century when it managed to seize the Orthodox and Catholic Bosnians. This Serbian and Croatian hegemony was, and is to this day, rejected by a vast majority of the Muslim Bosnians. Muslims still feel alienated in the very countries they call home and have called home for centuries - you'd have to be pretty disoriented to believe that a Bosniak in Bosnia doesn't feel worthy of the ground he walks today; the feeling of alienation you are speaking of disappeared with the former Yugoslavia and the Serbian/Croatian domination associated therewith. The situation might be different with the Bosniaks in Sandzak because they still have no independence and continue to live under Serb and Montenegrin domination. I'm afraid you seem to connect your "personal experiences" to Bosniaks outside of Bosnia. Muslims align themselves to the Bosniaks based on the theory that united we stand, divided we fall - Bosniaks are an ethnic group greater than the sum of their religion, Bosnia constitutes a historical entity which has its own identity and its own history. In the end, it's not even about ethnic affiliations but rather the religious pretext and what faith you believe in that determines your ethnic affiliation. And that, my friends, has been and will always be the underlying problem of the former Yugoslavia - true, but another equally big problem is the frequent denial of Bosniaks as a distinct ethnic group instead of a "treacherous religious community which betrayed Christianity" as advanced by Serb and Croat nationalists without any real foundation in history. I am unfortunately convinced that very few B/S/C-speaking Christians in the region, regardless of how liberal they have succeeded in becoming, can truly understand this. This is the reason practically every contemporary Western treatise on the history of Bosnia has been outright rejected by Serbs and Croats who continue to cherish their 19th-century propaganda. This will have to be my final post since, as Nedim Ardoğa points out, this is not the forum to dwell on this kind of polemy. I should also point out that I have nothing against either Serbs or Croats, there are plenty of good people on both sides, but the one-sided biased nationalist approach to historiography has no place in the modern school. Turkish Postal Service Law of 1930

I've been looking for some information on the Turkish Postal Service Law of 1930. It's currently a wiki red-link, but with several articles linking to it (mostly Turkish cities). It seems an important topic, not just for its obvious impact in renaming cities in international usage, but its wider roots in the establishing of a Turkish state and identity. Is there an article on it on the Turkish wikipedia that someone could translate over, or else does anyone have the knowledge/sources to create at least a stub? The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ekin Tunçay Turan until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Hello! The above article has been improved by several editors is likely to be kept. Some Turkish references have been added, but just as URLs. Can someone here add titles, publishers, etc., to the references and note whether they are reviews, articles or press releases, so that the editors who are interested in theatre can tell if they are independent and reliable? That would be very helpful in closing the deletion discussion. —Anne Delong (talk) 17:06, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Recently created Turkish music articles

Hi. I'm coming here from the Guild of Copy Editors, where a number of articles in the following categories have been recently tagged for copy edits and/or deletion:

  • Composers of Ottoman classical music
  • Composers of Turkish makam music

Many of these articles are bare, unreferenced, and poorly written. I've edited what I can, and placed requests on otherson your request page. I'm making a blanket request here because in many instances the recent articles are not about classical composers or makam players. Many of the articles have coorosponding articles on Turkish Wikipedia, but all could benefit from expert attention to avoid deletion. Thanks. PaintedCarpet (talk) 18:26, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Turkey At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

A location question

Hello - I've been working on some articles on Ottoman warships, and I'm currently rewriting the article on Ottoman ironclad Mesudiye. I've come across a reference to a Büyükdere that is not mentioned on that dab page, but I don't know where else it might be. I'm guessing it's a suburb of Istanbul, since it's mentioned in the context of the fleet's operations against Bulgarian forces during the First Balkan War and there is a Büyükdere Avenue in the city. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 00:17, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Good guess. Please refer to an online map. It is a neighborhood of İstanbul on the European side of the Bosphorous, about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north of the FSM (north) bridge. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 07:31, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Article that needs your attention as a Requested Move: Greek Muslims

There is an article on wikipedia called Greek Muslims. I am not sure if Turkish editors have come across it, but it is about Greek speaking Muslims who have and still identify as Turks(as it is pointed out in the article). Many years back, its neutral title was Greek speaking Muslims and later it was changed to Greek Muslims. I have requested that the former name be restored as the current name implies that those people are Greek. I have written much more about the reasons for change in the Talk page Talk:Greek Muslims#Requested move 24 February 2015 that needs additional input. The RM has just been relisted to allow for it. Moreover, the article is not part of the Turkey Portal. Can something be done also to deal with that issue, as the article deals with communities that identify strongly as Turks and not Greeks. The same announcement was made at Armenian Genocide, but I think this forum ought equally to know what is planned.

Armenian Genocide
An Armenian woman kneeling beside a dead child in a field during the Armenian Genocide, conducted by the government of the Ottoman Empire. The genocide is conventionally held to have begun on 24 April 1915, when Ottoman authorities arrested and later executed some 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders. Much of the remaining Armenian population were deported into the deserts of Syria, where most died from starvation, exhaustion, and systematic massacres. The total number of people killed has been estimated at between 1 and 1.5 million. Though the events are widely recognized as a genocide by historians, the Turkish government rejects such a description.Photograph: American Committee for Relief in the Near East; restoration: MjolnirPants

Qutalmish

Qutalmish is not structured as a disambiguation page so I stripped the assessments class=disambig, importance=NA and I added the biography project banner at Talk:Qutalmish.

Probably this should be converted to a biography of the 11th-century person covered in section 1. It is now linked ("Languages" in the left margin) to a biography (not a Stub) of that person, if i glance correctly, at Turkish Wikipedia, tr:Kutalmış. The Français, Polski, and Português pages are Stubs that cover the same person, i believe. (FR.wiki and PL.wiki do give death 1064 where TR.wiki gives 1077.)

Help with an article?

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help fix up the article for İrfan Şahin. There is a rather large article on the Turkish Wikipedia and he looks like he should be notable, but it needs a lot of work from someone fluent in the language. Anyone willing to help out? Translation request for DYK

Hi, could a Turkish speaker help me with translating this information about Çeteci Abdullah Pasha? He seems to have been an important Ottoman figure in the mid-18th century. Template:Turkish people

I cleaned up this sidebar template, {{Turkish people}}, as part of a routine maintenance exercise (no significant change to content, except I did remove a {{Systemic bias}} tag, as there had been no discussion on the talk page for more than 2 years). I thought it strange that, although it is listed among the 100 most-watched templates, it is currently transcluded in only one article. There isn't much point in having a sidebar or navbox template if no (or very few) articles actually use it! I hope members of this project will add it to the relevant pages. Governors/mayors of Istanbul

Merhaba!Thanks, Google Translate!

I came across Hüseyin Avni Mutlu, the current governor of Istanbul Province, who's currently redirecting to List of Governors of Istanbul Province. I think it would be best to delete the link to encourage creation of an article on this person, who is almost certainly notable. Discussion will take place at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2014 February 12#Hüseyin Avni Mutlu. I expressed some confusion over Istanbul apparently having a governor and a mayor. This may or may not have much impact on the discussion. If perhaps the position of governor of Istanbul is now largely ceremonial, perhaps the person isn't as important as I would think. --BDD (talk) 18:14, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

For the last point; the governors are non-political people and are appointed by the government. They are largely responsible in security of the whole province. The mayors on the other hand are elected people. Up until recently their sphere of influence was limited to a single city in the province. (After March 2014 in some provinces, the authority of the mayors will increase) Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 20:15, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Writing Wikipedia articles on academic books

How many of you are interested in writing Wikipedia articles on academic books? For instance, I found:

I am aware they are amateurs. But they don't have to write an academic essay itself. Just a summary of what the sources are saying. As an example I'm writing: Before Homosexuality in the Arab‐Islamic World, 1500–1800. You can use WP:RX to acquire these academic sources. WhisperToMe (talk) 05:56, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Dersim Province

The official name of the province is Tunceli province not Dersim, however in English Wikipedia it's moved to Dersim Province by someone (Ahmetyal (talk · contribs)) quite possibly with political agenda or whatnot. One can clearly see this at the site of Agency of Provinces (Turkish: İller İdaresi) that the name of the province is indeed Tunceli. Please move it back to Tunceli province and lock the move requests without a real good reason. -- Infestor  TC 23:49, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I've changed the name but I also gave two reliable sources. If they appear to be wrong on the matter, then we have no choice but to change it back to Tunceli. However it seems weird that the name has not 'officialy changed' when Erdogan promised this and implemented a law about this. --Ahmetyal (talk) 09:43, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
The name is still Tunceli Province.(see http://www.tunceli.gov.tr/) Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 10:41, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Presently, the name of the province is Tunceli. Please check the following pages The official population statistics for Tunceli Province, Tunceli Province governor's page,Tunceli University page So what is the reason of this discussion ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 18:50, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
It's to decide which of the two names should be used, so that the chosen name may be applied consistently, because at present some articles use one and some the other. When a topic is controversial, a unilateral decision is always bad, and one-by-one changes to pages can take forever to finish. What I certainly want to avoid is a repeat of the problems of a few weeks ago (see Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RRArchive252#User:Master Tyranus reported by User:Ahmetyal (Result: prot), User talk:Redrose64#Tunceli/Dersim Dispute, User talk:Master Tyranus#August 2014), which resulted in a lot of cleanup for myself and other admins. The worst of these was a series of WP:CUTPASTE page moves, which would still have been undesirable even if they had been discussed. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:30, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
The cut&paste page moves by Master Tyranus (talk · contribs) have resumed after exactly two months. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:46, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
News on this topic: Davutoglu will visit the province on Monday and here the name will be changed to Dersim. --Ahmetyal (talk) 23:07, 21 November 2014 (UTC) http://www.subuohaber.com/politika/tunceli-dersim-oluyor-h4878.html

Major changes/corrections in Turkish geographical region articles

I had made these changes unilaterally, but was soon reverted by User:Bgwhite, who asked me to seek consensus here. So here I am. Here is a sample of what I propose to do in the articles:

Major changes/corrections

Maps

Right now, these maps are used in the article:

These maps are quite simply incorrect; the borders of the geographical regions of Turkey do not overlap with the borders of the administrative provinces.

This is the correct map of the geographical Aegean Region:

Provinces in the Aegean Region

Since the borders do not overlap, there can be no clear-cut list of provinces in the Aegean Region.

Right now, this list is featured in the article:

This list is also incorrect.

If we want to list the provinces in the Aegean Region, we will need at least two, but preferable three categorizies:

  1. Provinces that are entirely in the Aegean Region.
  2. Provinces that are mostly in the Aegean Region.
  3. Provinces that are partially in the Aegean Region.

According to this map, which shows both geographical and provincial borders, the correct list should be as follows:

Provinces in the Aegean Region

Provinces that are entirely in the Aegean Region:

Provinces that are mostly in the Aegean Region:

Provinces that are partially in the Aegean Region:

Population

Since the geographical borders are imprecise (they don't overlap with district borders either), there is no convenient way to calculate the population of the geographical Aegean Region, or other geographical regions of Turkey for that matter. Any figure you see on the Internet in this regard is, at best, imprecise guesswork. I propose that we rank geographical regions among themselves and leave it at that.

Eagerly awaiting comments. Regards. --Mttll (talk) 11:10, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

I see your point. Geographical region and administrative unit are different things. Muğla , Denizli and Afyon have territories out of the Aegean Region. But no harm in considering İzmir, Manisa and Kütahya completely in the Aegean Region. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 19:17, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

If we assume this map is perfectly accurate, Izmir and Manisa seem to have some territory in the Marmara Region, like 1% and 3% respectively. For Kütahya, the figure seems closer to 0.01%. Anyway, that's a relatively minor point. The far more pressing issue is the correction of maps and such. By the way, I forgot to mention: I had added the actual subdivision of the geographical Aegean Region, but it was reverted as well:

Subdivision

  • Aegean Section (Turkish: Ege Bölümü)
    • Edremit Area (Turkish: Edremit Yöresi)
    • Bakırçay Area (Turkish: Bakırçay Yöresi)
    • Gediz Area (Turkish: Gediz Yöresi)
    • İzmir Area (Turkish: İzmir Yöresi)
    • Küçük Menderes Area (Turkish: Küçük Menderes Yöresi)
    • Büyük Menderes Area (Turkish: Büyük Menderes Yöresi)
    • Menteşe Area (Turkish: Menteşe Yöresi)
  • Inner Western Anatolia Section (Turkish: İç Batı Anadolu Bölümü)

Hi everybody,

could someone take a look at this little problem here? The thing is that some statistics about Muslim/Turkish(?) casualties are wrongly cited from sources, but now two editors are simply removing the category of Muslim casualties altogether, leaving only Greek and Armenian figures. I am not sure, but I feel this might even be done on purpose, the editors do not engage in discussion, so some help would be appreciated. Thank you 82.217.116.224 (talk) 10:49, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

We need an article Cannabis in Turkey

Hello, I'm working at WP:WikiProject Cannabis, and we're trying to expand our coverage of "Cannabis in (country)" articles, and I saw that we don't have one for Turkey. Turkey has had an interesting role in cannabis history, commercially, culturally, and legally. We have some suggestions at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Cannabis#.22Cannabis_in_.28Country.29.22_articles_for_creation_and_expansion for how to help add more countries to our coverage; anyone here want to help out by covering Turkey? You can use some of our recent articles as a template to see what kinds of facts and details would help! Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 12:08, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

In June 2013 the content of the article "Kümbet" which then looked like this was merged into Gonbad, where it seems to sit rather unhappily, and Kümbet was made into a redirect to that article. I found this while looking to make a dab page entry for Kümbet, Seyitgazi which I was stub-sorting: there are also two other villages called "Kümbet".

I've now created a dab page at Kümbet, but am not sure whether the material in the Gonbad page belongs there (and should be edited to merge more gracefully into that page) or should be a stand-alone article. Over to you. PamD 19:00, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Levant in Turkish

Hi, Recently an editor added the infobox on Levant what is supposed to be a Turkish name as "borçlarını ödemeden kaçmak". Someone pointed on the talk page that meaning of separate words reads running away without paying a debts, which sounds insulting and not related to Levant. Google translate does translate the expression as "Levant". Can anyone speaking the language clarify on Levant's talk page and if needed fix the title ? WarKosign 07:53, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

In this sense, the Turkish equivalent of Levant is the same as in English. "borçlarını ödemeden kaçmak" is just a homonym and it has nothing to do with this usage. So I'll remove it. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:15, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. Hi there, would anyone be of assistance on the Turkish people article? I have worked really hard to find as many sources as possible for the populations in the infobox (everything was even quoted - I used censuses and mostly academic sources). But I have continuously been reverted and nobody is having a discussion with me to solve the dispute. What should I do? One of the users has threatened to block me. Challenge

Hi. I was wondering if you'd be interested in me setting up Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey), based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). Now it's not a contest in itself, it's designed to motivate people to inspire others to improve content and build something which demonstrates the hard work going into the country which is visible. The focus is more on quality improvements but new articles are welcome too. Eventually a Turkish National Contest could be created to fuel it, like Wikipedia:Awaken the Dragon, in which contestants can choose to keep the Amazon vouchers themselves to buy their own books for more articles or put them into book fund to help editors further improve Turkish-related topics by giving them the books they want. It will begin though as purely an improvement drive. Publicize this, get a group of editors together if interested and we'll start it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:07, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

As I know editors like CeeGee are tremendously resourceful and there's some other decent editors working here I've created this at Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey). I thought once setting up a people add a few articles it will gain momentum and more editors. Good luck with it, hope it encourages people to produce more content! Translation?

Hello, folks. I've been working on a draft in my userspace, [19], for which one of the most substantive sources is in Turkish [20]. Is there anybody here who can help with translation? I didn't want to rely on google for anything but the most basic stuff. Shouldn't be too difficult, it's only a few paragraphs. Regards, Vanamonde (talk) 14:40, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

I'd be glad to help. But unfortunatelly this is not in Turkish. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 18:40, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
@Nedim Ardoğa: Huh, you're right. I didn't realize at first, just kind of guessed...google says its in Kurdish, not Turkish. How about this? This does seem to be in Turkish, and is also a little longer than my other sources. Regards, Vanamonde (talk) 05:29, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Butterflies

This has got to be the lowest priority thing I can think of related to Turkey, but I'm going through all the "List of butterflies of ..." lists and the one for Turkey (List of butterflies of Turkey) has what appears to be the species names in Turkish. That's cool. Most lists don't have the native language. The thing is that Wikipedia's style is to have species common names in lower case, except for proper names. Not speaking Turkish, I can't easily tell what are proper names and what are not. I've made a copy in my userspace with all the names in lower case at User:SchreiberBike/sandbox/List of butterflies of Turkey. If someone could go through that and capitalize the proper names, I'd be happy to do the rest. Thanks in advance,  SchreiberBike | ⌨  15:46, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

I've identified the proper names and updated List of butterflies of Turkey. If anyone is interested in checking my work, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  21:29, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Vandalism at Turkish Wikipedia

I'm doing research regarding the butterflies above and using Turkish Wikipedia. I've found the phrase "_O_R_O_S_P_U_S_U_N_U_Z_!_" all over the place there with what appears to be a user's signature in articles. The user at Turkish Wikipedia is at https://tr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kullan%C4%B1c%C4%B1:SeyitA&redirect=no . I speak no Turkish so I can't tell what's going on but I want to bring it to someone's attention.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  00:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Fevzipaşa (disambiguation)

The article Fevzipaşa (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Disambiguation not required. Fevzipaşa (the town) now refers to Fevzi Pasha (disambiguation) (Ottoman/Turkish generals named Fevzi) in a hatnote.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:59, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Turkish people

Dear wikipedians, for the last two years now, I have seen the Turkish people article in a complete mess. It is time for the nationalist nonsense to stop (whether pan-Turkish or anti-Turkish). Are there any wikipedians willing to help me write-up an objective article? O.celebi (talk) 17:39, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

This is an old article created in 2005. Exactly what may be wrong or racist ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 18:07, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
To begin with, the following sentence has been added without any discussion. "It has been discovered through the Turkish genealogy database that at least 2 million of those who identify as Turks are in reality ethnically Armenian, most of whom were survivors of the Armenian Genocide" neither of the sources cited claim this. The closest is from the independent article saying "Perhaps two million Turks have Armenian grandmothers" at the very end. Robert Fisk is not a historian or demographer nor does he have access to Turkish Geneology data and yet an offhand comment is being deliberately misrepresented as fact. Time zone (infobox) in Turkey articles

Hi All - newbie alert! :) Earlier today I reviewed/edited (by way of the WP:ASE list, not because I'd claim any expertise in the subject) a couple of small articles on Turkish villages, and noticed that in both cases the time zone in the infobox was shown as EET (winter) / EEST (summer). AFAIK, Turkey is now year-round on the FET. Assuming I'm right, and further assuming that this is something that needs to be corrected in a number of articles, is there an easy way of doing it (say, a tame bot?) without a lot of manual editing? Or if not, could this be added as a project task (if it isn't already)? Cheers, DoubleGrazing (talk) 10:28, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't think we need a bot to accomplish the task. In the past we also had a term when the summer time was used during the winter. This was a temporary practice and it was soon abandoned. No need to hurry. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 12:49, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
@Nedim Ardoğa: Are you suggesting that Turkey's current FET observance is temporary also? If so, what do you base this on? And as to whether we need to 'hurry' or not, I'm not saying correcting the time zone references should be anyone's top priority, just flagging up an issue that needs addressing at some point (unless you're right, and the country reverts to its earlier time zones). DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:50, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
It probably is. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 14:07, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

Turkish people article

This is the third time I am writing this. Hopefully it does not get ignored this time. The following sentence has been added to the Turkish people lead without any discussion. "It has been discovered through the Turkish genealogy database that at least 2 million of those who identify as Turks are in reality ethnically Armenian, most of whom were survivors of the Armenian Genocide". Neither of the sources cited for this sentence claim this. The Al-monitor article does not mention any type of statistics. The closest is from the independent article saying "Perhaps two million Turks have Armenian grandmothers" at the very end. This is made by Robert Fisk. Robert Fisk is not a historian or demographer nor does he have access to Turkish Genealogy data and yet an offhand comment made by a journalist is being presented as though it is the result of an investigation into Turkish genealogy data.

I believe this is an edit made in bad faith as the note on the page history is "expanded the lead a bit..." left by a user who regularly engages in aggressive edit feuds with other users. Bertan92 (talk) 15:41, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Why don't you make the necessary corrections ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 14:03, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
Looks like somebody has. I still think it doesn't belong in the article. It's an offhand claim made by a random journalist. Can we look into banning the user who made the edit. There are so many violations in this one edit it's not even funny.Bertan92 (talk) 16:14, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

Check sources?

Hi! I had a student in one of my Wiki Education courses tell me that some of the content in the article on Özgür Dengiz was plagiarized from the sources in the article. @DBigXray: Thanks for your attention. It seems that this user is trying to rename some articles with Turkish-language name into their spelling in Greek-language, which is not necessary. Pronunciation of Türkçe

I've just created Talk:Turkish language § Pronunciation of Türkçe:

The Turkish word for the Turkish language is Türkçe, as given in the second cell of the infobox of Turkish language. The next cell gives its pronunciation in IPA and a link to a sound file,
Commons:File:Tr-Türkçe.oga: [ˈtyɾctʃe] .
That file's Description is
Audio recording of "Turkish" (Türkçe, IPA: [tyɾktʃe]) in Turkish. Recorded and uploaded by Atilim Gunes Baydin (native speaker).
Note the difference: the letter k pronounced in the infobox as the unvoiced palatal stop [c], and in the file description as the unvoiced velar stop [k]. ("[c]" here is the IPA symbol, not the Turkish letter.) The difference, probably due to palatalization of /k/ before the palatal affricate /tʃ/, may be insignificant or may not be. I don't know enough about Turkish to tell; we need an expert here. --Thnidu (talk) 01:56, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

Requested article: 1812 Ottoman Empire plague epidemic

In 1812 there seems to have been a significant plague outbreak in the Ottoman Empire, which seems to have begun in Constantinople and traveled to other parts of the empire including Egypt, and later also spread outside of the empire's borders.

It seems to have had a massive impact, but it is barely covered on Wikipedia. There's an article about Caragea's plague which hit Wallachia (then an Ottoman vassal) in 1813–14, and I am currently in the process of writing an article on the 1813–14 Malta plague epidemic. Both seem to have derived from the 1812 Constantinople outbreak (it arrived in Malta via Egypt).

I think it would be useful if there would be an article covering the entire outbreak - would any members of this WikiProject be willing to help out? A source about the outbreak in Odessa can be found here.

The article Oltu has "Urban" and "District" statistics from 2012, but the site seems to have been deleted. tr:Oltu only has one population, from 2020, but doesn't specify whether it's the town or the district. Mass creation of village articles

Thousands of stubs, like this one, are currently being created by User:Lugnuts about the villages of Turkey. Though seeing the coverage expanded is good, the articles seem to consist only in a single sentence naming the district the village is in, and an infobox that gives the population. They're all sourced to https://www.koyumuz.net/, a private weather website, so I'm wondering how reliable is the information there? Is that overall a good idea? – Uanfala (talk) 14:50, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

This one is supposed to be a stub. With future additions it will be improved. By the way, for population a more reliable source is [22]. Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:31, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Some editors are unsure of its reliability. The source I mentioned at #Population looks more official; there is also https://biruni.tuik.gov.tr/nufusmenuapp/menu.zul where the most recent date is 2000, and for villages in some districts the sources are the same as in our articles but in others (for example Karapınar, Gölhisar and others in the same district) they are different. Peter James (talk) 14:18, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

This is currently being discussed at ANI. It would make more sense to cover these within the District article; I started doing this for villages within Şenkaya, which literally consisted of "X is a neighbourhood in the Şenkaya District of Erzurum Province in Turkey" with no population or location data, but I was reverted by the editor who created the stubs. These were sourced to a table on a government website [23]. –dlthewave 17:39, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Stubs with no location and no population shouldn't be created, but redirects are no better. There are so many villages in these districts that when information is added to the list it will become too long and less useful. Anyone looking for information about a specific place is unlikely to be looking for the district page, or any of 67 other places in the district. Peter James (talk) 19:58, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
Taking Şenkaya as an example, if the district has a population of 2,803 and consists of 66 neighbourhoods/villages, that's ~42 people per neighbourhood/village. Do we really need articles for every neighbourhood/village? Some of which may not be actual communities but what this book (admittedly from 1974 so things may have changed) refers to as "scattered patterned Mahalles"? Census tracts were explicitly excluded from being legally-recognised places under WP:GEOLAND and these villages/neighbourhoods seem to fall into the same category. Additionally WP:GEOLAND explicitly excludes "maps and tables" from being proof of notability since they include no more information than that the place exists (and hence that is all the information our article will likely ever contain), and the website used for these articles is basically just a map/table with names on it.
Even setting aside the above WP:GEOLAND concerns, does it really make any sense to start articles for every neighbourhood/village in Turkey? There are at least 16,803 mahalles and 18,214 köy according to our article on Villages of Turkey, for a total of at least 35,017 such units. Is the proposal to have an article for every single one of them consisting only of "X is a neighbourhood in Y district of Z province, Turkey"?
My personal preference is only to have articles for those neighbourhood/villages that pass GNG and redirect the remainder to district level. FOARP (talk) 19:50, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
32,097 mahalles and 18,208 köy (as of 2020). Also Wikipedia:Systemic bias. Peter James (talk) 20:19, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
So, 50,305 such units. I fail to see how any systemic bias is overcome by creating one-sentence permastubs for such administrative units. For comparison this is greater than the total number of populated areas of any description (49,000 including those that automatically fail WP:GEOLAND, like census-tracts) in the UK, a country of comparable population to Turkey. FOARP (talk) 20:36, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
The articles would already exist if these were US places; most would exist if they were UK places. The UK doesn't have census tracts; the equivalent areas are identified by numbers (including 171,372 output areas[24]), or have combinations of names and numbers, depending on the level, so it's unlikely that they would be in a list of places. Printed encyclopedias generally have articles much shorter than Wikipedia's articles, and some are one-sentence "permastubs". Peter James (talk) 21:43, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Having spent a good part of the past year, together with a good number of other editors, AFDing/PRODing mass-created US geofails, I do not agree that articles for what appear to be analogous to lowest-level US census units having average populations in some districts of a few dozen or less would necessarily exist. Please see, e.g., this list for the A-D range of a list of articles I prod'd, AFD'd, and re-directed. We also have the recent case of the mass-created Iranian “village” articles, many of which are (according to the overwhelming consensus currently in the discussion) going to be simply deleted in bulk, with potential sanctions for the creator also being discussed. Finally we also have the case of Dr. Blofeld’s attempt at creating geostubs by algorithm based on GEONET data back in 2008 or so - they got as far as the Cs before people told him simply to stop because there is just no way to ever properly verify so many single-source articles. Mass-creation of Geostubs based on a single source containing practically no information beyond the name of the location is always a bad idea. FOARP (talk) 05:19, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

"Do we really need articles for every neighbourhood/village?" is a loaded question. The answer of course, is yes, per WP:5P1. The problem FOARP relates to for creations done by Carlos (and others) in the distant-past is that the EN articles became the starting point for lots of other wikis to copy that same article, complete with mistakes. So lots of these places in California don't exist, or if they do, they are not "villages" or whatever California calls populated places. However, the Turkish places are the other way round. They clearly already exist, and have a population, so meet WP:GEOLAND. Some of these places in Turkey have 40 or 50 people living there, some have hundreds, even thousands. Wikipedia:Systemic bias is a great point too. Looking at some US places at random, what is the difference between New Union, Alabama, or Chestervale, Illinois, or Finchville, Nebraska, etc, etc. And please be smart and don't cite WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, as that is an essay. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:00, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
WP:5P1 says that Wiki is a gazeteer. It does not say that Wiki is a place to create tens of thousands of unimprovable micro-stubs consisting of the same cut/pasted sentence, regardless of notability or sourcing, spending ~90 seconds or less on each article (including rating it and creating a talk page!) so you can catch up with Encyclopedius/Dr. Blofeld on this table. And yes, all you're proving with your US geo articles is that this is a bad problem on Wiki that we should not be making worse. FOARP (talk) 07:10, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
So apart from your own dislike of stubs, where does it say that "It does not say that Wiki is a place to create tens of thousands of unimprovable micro-stubs consisting of the same cut/pasted sentence, regardless of notability or sourcing, spending ~90 seconds or less on each article (including rating it and creating a talk page!)..." is not allowed? Which policy is this? Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:12, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
And the bit "...of unimprovable micro-stubs..." is quite obviously bollocks, per the creation of Babakale, Ayvacık, which got a DYK. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:13, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
That would be WP:GNG, WP:GEOLAND (which explicitly excludes maps/tables from being used to establish notability) and also WP:MEATBOT (which explicitly says that bot-like human editing is covered by the same policies as covered apply to mass-creation of articles by bot). Actually WP:V also applies. DYK is explicitly NOT an indicator of page-quality, no-one is saying that a GNG passing community shouldn't have an article, and if I were you I would not be trying to take credit for the work that CeeGee did in fixing that particular stub. FOARP (talk) 07:24, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
These all meet WP:GNG/WP:GEOLAND, and, of course, by that meet WP:V. "DYK is explicitly NOT an indicator of page-quality" True, but again another false claim by you stating that these articles are "unimprovable". Anyone can see that Babakale, Ayvacık has indeed been improved. And I'm not taking credit (where did I say I was?) It shows that it was improved. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:33, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
There's no way an article with a single reference, where the reference is a single line in a table with a name in it, meets GNG because GNG requires multiple instances of SIGCOV. Similarly, they don't meet GEOLAND because GEOLAND explicitly excludes bare-mentions in tables/maps from being used to show notability. dlthewave's point that this is like throwing a phone-book at other editors and saying "some of these people are famous so let's write an article on every single one of them" is entirely relevant - you know what, I think writing articles about the notable ones and not writing articles about the non-notable ones is a better way to go? WP:V is in doubt because the sources you are using do not actually state that these are even neighbourhoods/villages, much less legally-recognised ones - they simply list these names with no further data. FOARP (talk) 07:43, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
I don't see the phone book comment that you state - did you make that up as well? Anyway, a "phone book" equivalent here would be every single individual house, which isn't the case. The notable ones are already identified as being populated places, so meeting WP:GNG, GEO, V, etc, etc. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:48, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
DLthewave made this comment over on the ANI thread, which I really, really would read carefully if I were you. I note you haven't engaged at all with the WP:MEATBOT point.
You've had two trips to ANI recently related to mass creation of stubs, one of which is still open. I really would take these as a flashing amber warning, not simply as indications that you've done nothing wrong and business as usual should carry on. One thing I think the 2000's mass-creators need to reckon with is the subsequent generations of editors have had to spend a lot of time cleaning up these stubs and so are much less favourably inclined towards creation of them. You might think "well, FOARP's just an annoying, wrong, guy who has a problem with me for some reason" but I'm far from the only one who has a big problem with these mass-created perma-micro-stubs. FOARP (talk) 07:58, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
The first one was closed, as I'm working within the guidelines (per the closer's notes). Again, another false claim by you above - "the sources you are using do not actually state that these are even neighbourhoods/villages" the Turkish source from their gov.tr website states "Mahalle Sayısı" on each page. Translated as "Number of Neighborhoods" which then collates to the list of places. Sorry son, I'm here to build an encyclopedia, not go round the houses with you and your multiple false claims. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 08:04, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

I've encountered this before - it's really unhelpful - and quite inconsiderate - to create masses of microstub articles (they're not even worthwhile stubs) in the hope that other editors will come in and expand and improve them. Not only does it clutter the encyclopaedia, but it also causes unnecessary confusion and follow-up work where disambiguation is required while adding nothing to the sum of human knowledge that could not be achieved by listing village names under the district (or equivalent) article. That's what is done elsewhere. Be aware that at least one other editor that did this was subsequently banned permanently. Bermicourt (talk) 18:26, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

  • Note that Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ağcakent, Aziziye was closed as redirect. Is there consensus to redirect the various other microstubs created as part of this, as well? I'd certainly endorse that, they don't seem any different than the case brought up there. SnowFire (talk) 19:30, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@SnowFire - The other "village" articles are no different and I would take this as read. Absolutely the same logic applies. The above discussion is also pretty clear that there was no consensus in favour of the mass creation of these pages as required by WP:MASSCREATION/WP:MEATBOT (which are policy - I don't know why anyone object to their being cited other than because there is no reasonable counter to them) so redirect is a perfectly appropriate response. Only exception is for those "village" articles that have been expanded to non-stub-status. FOARP (talk) 08:49, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
I note that Lugnuts is still reverting dlthewave's redirects of these stubs, against the consensus here, at ANI, and at AFD regarding them, and has refused to discuss this issue on their talk page. I invite them to discuss here why stubs of exactly the same nature and sourcing as led to their being sanctioned at ANI with loss of autopatrolled, and which there was a consensus to revert en masse at AFD, and which there is a consensus against above, should not be redirected. Alternatively I suggest they consider other means of dispute-resolution (e.g., discussing with the AFD closing admin Barkeep49 on their talk page, and opening a DELREV case for the AFD if this discussion does not resolve the issue). FOARP (talk) 09:35, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
A discussion between two people, MEATBOT-FOARP and one other user now becomes a consensus? FOARP - are you going to redirect all the stubs for Turkish villages, or just the ones I created? Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 09:46, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
I imagine dlthewave, whose edits you keep reverting, may also make their thoughts known on this, though I believe their views are also clearly against these stubs. FOARP (talk) 10:02, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, I really want hear from that guy. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 10:25, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi! Yes, at this point I do think it's appropriate to redirect the stubs based on the spirit of the linked ANI and AFD discussions. This is currently being discussed at AN which is heading toward the same conclusion. –dlthewave 12:14, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Minor Turkish Settlements and geocoordinates

I've noticed quite a few Turkish minor settlements (by that I mean location with typically <200 inhabitants) are tagged as missing coordinates. I am currently going through Category:Turkey articles missing geocoordinate data and was wondering what is the policy of this project towards said settlements, are they to be redirected and merged into lists named after their provinces or is adding geocoordinates to them welcome? Sadenar40000 (talk) 19:52, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

There's community consensus to merge/redirect these stubs to the District article, e.g. Karaçoban. I started that process a few months ago but haven't been very active. I do copy the coordinates over so you're more than welcome to add them anytime before or after the merge. You might want to check with Deor who has been adding/refining coordinates as well. I have a list at User:Dlthewave/Turkey cleanup, completed merges are at the very bottom with Deor's comments in parantheses. –dlthewave 15:14, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
The said community consensus concerned a set of several thousand stubs which were created by the same user earlier this year and consisted of only a single sentence, and even then the consensus was more qualified and situational. My understanding is that:
  • If it's one of those articles and it says it's about a neighbourhood (rather than a village), then the preference is for redirecting;
  • If it's one of those articles and it's not about a neighbourhood, then it's up to editor discretion, without any particular objection to redirecting at scale;
  • If it's not one of those articles, then the preference is against redirecting (though obviously that's subject to editor discretion in individual cases).
If there's any recent discussion that contradicts the above, then please let me know. – Uanfala (talk) 15:39, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
Yes, that's my understanding as well, I guess I spoke too broadly since I'm mostly focused on those mass-created "neighborhood" stubs. Would you agree that it makes sense to add coordinates to all of them, since they'll be preserved through any merges/redirects? –dlthewave 22:30, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
Yes, adding coordinates sounds useful. Although maybe some caution is necessary for those stubs that are not reliably sourced. If I'm not mistaken, there are still quite a few that are based on koyumuz.net or other similar websites, so if coordinates are added for these, then it's probably worth double-checking they're watertight. – Uanfala (talk) 14:36, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Can you add more to 2021 Turkish wildfires?

Help please with writer/lawyer biography

Hello WikiProject Turkey. Kadir Mısıroğlu is a biography of a lawyer/writer where two camps of editors have err... let's say quite different opinions about various key points. Could we please get some independent input to turn it into an WP:NPOV article? Regards, MrsSnoozyTurtle 00:57, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Possible vandalism at List of Ottoman Grand Viziers

Hello there. I recently focused a bit on Ottoman Empire/Turkey and Turkish people and edited/created some articles about them. After editing List of Ottoman Grand Viziers, which contained several inaccuracies (and other self-promoting assumptions, such as calling a South Slav or a Bosnian a "Serbian"),a user, 1Breda1, has now attempted two times to change ethnicities in the article, in an attempt to promote themselves. Now this is user is promoting Serbia, but I don't doubt that in the future any other Balkan national may come around. I don't agree with mentioning ethnicity there, but if so, then let's say things right. I wanted to let you know that I detected this issue with this article (for which I'll ask for protection, though I'm afraid it'll be useless, since the person has created an account), and also tell you that I look forward for someone to have a look at List of Ottoman Grand Viziers to cross-check if everything I edited is ok. Cheers.--Haldir Marchwarden (talk) 17:37, 1 September 2021 (UTC) Haldir Marchwarden, maybe you'd better focus on something other than Balkan history!? You are very ill-informed or very ill-intentioned! You are the one who've changed the original source and ignores the fact that ±80% of the population of the Balkans is of Serb descent and that they are regularly mentioned as such in the Greeks, Bizantynes, Romans, Ottoman Tutkish, Germans...chronicles! If you deliberately want to avoid thousands of years of Serbian historical presence in the Balkan Peninsula by calling them "South Slavs", then you should as well call all other Balkan nation "South Slavs", not just the Serbs! South Slavs are divided linguistically into Eastern (Bulgarian and Macedonian) and Western groups (Slovenians, Croatian, Bosnian, Serb, and Montenegrin), and religiously into Orthodox (Serbs, Bulgarians, Macedonians, Montenegrins), Catholic (Croats, Slovenes), and Muslim (Bosniaks, Pomaks and other minorities). An estimated 35 million South Slavs and their descendants live worldwide. Among the South Slavic ethnic groups that are also nations are the Serbs, Bulgarians, Croats, Bosniaks, Slovenians, Macedonians, and Montenegrins. Bosniaks (Serbs converted to Islam), Serbs (Orthodox), and Croats (Roman Catholic) are the constituent nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among South Slav minorities or self-identifications are the Yugoslavs (former Yugoslavia), ethnic Muslims - also known as Bosniaks (former Yugoslavia), Torbeshi (North Macedonia), Pomaks (Bulgaria, Greece) and Gorani (Kosovo). The Catholic Bunjevci and Šokci, concentrated in northern Serbia and eastern Croatia, are divided between Croatian and local identities. There are also smaller communities of West and East Slavic peoples in northern Serbia! 10:59, 3 September 2021

Requesting some help

Greetings,

I have taken up one article Draft:Hayriye Melek Hunç for development. Hayriye Melek is author and woman of Circassian descent.

I came across tr:Kategori:Çerkes asıllı kişiler on Turkish Wikipedia but I am not comfortable reading and understanding Turkish language. I would be thankful if some one can help me out

I wish to take some more articles about women of Circassian descent. Can some one help me finding out articles about women of Circassian descent from Turkish Wikipedia or other encyclopedic notables who still do not have articles on English Wikipedia.

Thanks and warm regards

Bookku, 'Encyclopedias = expanding information & knowledge' (talk) 13:46, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

I checked your draft. It is much longer than the tr version. As for the women you can see them in tr:Kategori:Çerkes asıllı Türkler I glanced the first column. As far as I can see Ayşe Şasa, Aydan Burhan, Celile Hikmet, Çiğdem Batur, Deniz Selin Ünlüdağ have no articles in en WP. Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 12:04, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Enough! The Word Belongs To The People!

A new article was created about the political slogan "Yeter! Söz Milletindir!", titled at Enough! The Word Belongs To The People! I have proposed an RM that could use more input; in particular commentary on the most accurate English translation of the slogan is welcomed. User:力 (powera, π, ν) 01:06, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

A bit late, but "Enough, the nation has the word" and "Enough! It's the people's turn to speak" are both wrong. I'd say it's either the current title or "Enough, the people have the say" with myself leaning just a veeery tiny bit on the latter because it sounds better in English. The current title is a verbatim translation, so it isn't quite English-y, if you understand what I mean. xD ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 14:46, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Neighbourhood population in district articles

I've been redirecting village/neighborhood stubs to their districts per this discussion. The original set of articles created by Lugnuts was unreliably sourced and didn't include population, but Ymblanter pointed out that places such as Şirinköy, Bartın did include government-sourced population stats which are now being lost. I'm wondering whether these numbers are relevant enough to include in district-level neighborhood lists such as Bartın, since I don't recall seeing it being done this way elsewhere. –dlthewave 19:30, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dlthewave, the village population is definitely encyclopaedic information and needs to be restored where it had been sourced to a government source (not to Koyumuz). I prefer standalone articles for villages per reasons that I've explained here. In line with that, I note that articles like Bartın already have an undue amount of information on the "neighborhoods" (which are not neighborhoods but villages), and adding the population info would make the problem worse. That being said, I wouldn't hold you back from adding the info there, as long as it's restored one way or another. --GGT (talk) 01:49, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Help requested

Hello, I have been working on the article SS Germanic (1874), which operated under Ottoman/Turkish ownership for many years. The article says the ship was renamed from Gul Djemal to Gülcemal in the 1920s, however my understanding is, this was more of a re-spelling of the name than a renaming, as I understand that the Turkish alphabet was altered around this time. However, I don't speak Turkish, so I thought I would ask here for assistance from any Turkish speakers. G-13114 (talk) 15:45, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi G-13114. Your interpretation is correct, there indeed doesn't seem to have been any renaming - the Latinised Turkish alphabet was adopted in 1928 and Gul Djemal is an outdated rendering of Gülcemal as transcribed from the previous alphabet. I'll also ping Khutuck, who likes to work on the warship articles on tr.wiki; he may be of further assistance. --GGT (talk) 02:17, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, that's what I thought :) I've amended the article accordingly. G-13114 (talk) 20:45, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

Please help me

Greetings,

Hi, I am User:Bookku, my expectations to get expanded Black sea related articles failed miserably. I am expecting and requesting at least some help in expanding the article Draft:List of erstwhile slave trading townships with regions surrounding Black sea. In next steps I wish to have a proper map showing erstwhile slave trading townships across black sea.

Thanks and warm regards

Bookku, 'Encyclopedias = expanding information & knowledge' (talk) 10:06, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

"Erstwhile slave-trading [Black Sea] townships" doesn't appear to be an encyclopedic topic. I do not believe it would pass the WP:Notability test, because "townships around the Black Sea that formerly engaged in the slave trade" is not a topic unto itself that is subject to in-depth coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources. It wouldn't even make a good WP:Category, because it's not a defining characteristic of those places. Better off creating an article on the historical slave trade in the Black Sea region, and integrating those place names into that regular article.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  09:36, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Turkish language help

At Van cat, the wording a couple of years ago was:

named Van kedi (plural kediler or kedileri, possessive genitive kedisi) in Turkish

This was changed to:

named Van kedisi (plural kedileri) in Turkish

Which (if either) of these is correct, and is there a citable way to prove it? I have certainly run into this variety of cat being called Van kedi in Turkish sources, but that doesn't tell us anything about the grammatical relationship between kedi, kedisi, kediler, and kedileri.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  00:40, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

PS: That article could use additional neutral-minded watchlisters. It is subject to bouts of slow-moving editwarring, mostly to censor Kurd-related information out of it, and sometimes to censor it of Armenian details (conversely sometimes to inject irrelevant Armenian details like Lake Van being in an area sometimes called the Armenian Highlands [25]). Also caught someone trying to whitewash out some sourced criticism of a Turkish institution. It's a weird article to attract ethno-nationalistic conflict, but it nevertheless does.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  10:59, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi SMcCandlish, native Turkish speaker here. "Van kedisi" is definitely the correct version in Turkish and "Van kedi" is definitely incorrect. That is because as a phrase consisting of two nouns in Turkish (isim tamlaması), the second noun would usually need the suffix -i (inflected as required, -si here) to make sense. Likewise, the correct plural form would be "Van kedileri" and not "Van kediler". Whoever wrote the incorrect version was probably a learner of Turkish, this is a mistake often seen in those who don't yet completely have a grasp of Turkish grammar.
You may have seen instances of "Van kedi" as part of larger phrases incorporating more nouns or so forth e.g. "Van Kedi Evi", which literally means "Van House for Cats" (i.e. not strictly limited to Van cats only) - note that this actually has a subtle difference from "Van Kedisi Evi" i.e. "House for Van Cats", which would be understood as taking in only Van cats.
This is WP:SKYBLUE territory for native speakers of Turkish but you can also sort of confirm this by looking at the translations of the keywords in papers such as this. --GGT (talk) 23:54, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
@GGT: Thank you for these details. :-)  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  09:03, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
