Free gift of recognised content lists

Dear Norse fans,

I noticed that your project page has a rather out-dated list of recognised content. To get it up-to-date all you need to do is post {{User:JL-Bot/Project content |template = WikiProject Norse history and culture |content-featured-articles |content-featured-lists |content-featured-topics |content-good-articles |content-good-topics |content-a-class-articles |content-did-you-know-articles |content-featured-pictures |columns = 3 |icons |heading = 3 }} into the relevant section and the kind bot will fill it in and keep it up-to-date. If you want to see what it looks like, the most recent bot update is here, which page I will keep intact for a week or so for you. Ben MacDui 19:06, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for collaborators on heroic figures

Hi all, I'm looking for collaborators on improving the articles on the heroic figures from the Nibelungen/Volsung legend. I've already significantly expanded the articles for Sigurd and Brunhild, and am almost "done" with Gudrun. I don't know the Norse material all that well though, as I'm mostly familiar with the Middle High German traditions and scholarship. For this reason none of these articles contain a summary of their character in the Norna-Gests þáttr, for instance, because I just don't know where to look for that information. My sources on Germanic heroic traditions usually just dismiss it as late and contain the barest summary.

Anyway, I'm starting to run out of steam, even though Hagen (legend) and Gunther are two obvious priorities. I'm also committed to rewriting the article Nibelung, which shouldn't be as tedious as summarizing all of the texts in which, for instance, Gudrun/Kriemhild appears. I'd like to put together a page on Germanic heroic legend in general in the future; such a page is currently missing on Wikipedia. I'll have to scale back my activities here soon though, as I'm starting a new job in August and I might not have much library access from mid-July to August 16. I'm very grateful for whatever help anyone can give me.--Ermenrich (talk) 18:27, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiJournal of Humanities published first article

The WikiJournal of Humanities is a free, peer reviewed academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's humanities, arts and social sciences content. We started it as a way of bridging the Wikipedia-academia gap. It is also part of a WikiJournal User Group along with Wiki.J.Med and Wiki.J.Sci. The journal is still starting out and not yet well known, so we are advertising ourselves to WikiProjects that might be interested.

Editors

  • Invite submissions from non-wikipedians
  • Coordinate the organisation of external academic peer review
  • Format accepted articles
  • Promote the journal

Authors

  • New Wikipedia articles on topics that don't yet have a Wikipedia page, or only a stub/start
  • Existing Wikipedia articles to be externally peer reviewed (analogous to GA / FA review - see submission page)
  • Image articles, based around an important images, photographs or summary diagrams

If you want to know more, please see this recent interview with some WikiJournal editors, the journal's About page, or check out a comparison of similar initiatives. If you're interested, please come and discuss the project on the journal's talk page, or the general discussion page for the WikiJournal User group.

As an illustrative example, Wiki.J.Hum published its first article this month!

"Norse", "Viking" naming

The article Vikings says "Norse seafarers". Accordingly, could improvements pertaining to the Vikings be considered? Compare Norse activity in the British Isles: "it is debated whether the term Viking represented all Norse settlers or just those who raided".[1] See for instance:

This misconception has been replicated on and on, and for quite understandable reasons, even in fairly recent academic verbiage. Here are two starters: Vikings#Etymology, Norsemen#Other names. Category:Norse people created. To illustrate the problem, we talk about English art (not "Seafarer art"), American art (not "Filibuster art"/Marine art), and Russian art (not "Ushkuinik art"). Chicbyaccident (talk) 19:46, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • What controversy? Randy Kryn (talk) 20:30, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Randy Kryn: WP:PRECISION, right? Chicbyaccident (talk) 22:17, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The only "misconception" is yours! You admit at Talk:Viking art you don't understand the meaning of "Viking" at all, but you have launched one of your crazy blitz campaigns to eliminate all use of it in names. As so often WP:PRECISION is misclaimed as justification, and WP:COMMONNAME completely ignored. Johnbod (talk) 01:28, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your comment. For example, the lead section in Viking art says "also known commonly as Norse art", and "during the Viking Age", whereas the article Vikings says "Norse seafarers". Accordingly, for reasons stated, I thought it could be worth considering whether the preexisting nomenclature was optimal. I created Category:Norse people for main article Norsemen to deal with this broader scope of which anything "viking" could be understood to be a subset, judging from available sources.
Now, I see that this consideration met opposition and my arguments proposed were not accepted. I accept that, and it's alright. You mentioned that pinging you on the talk page was not desired, and if course I respect that. If you or anyone else here thinks that this idea of an improvement was in any way problematic related to WP:TE, WP:DE, WP:IDHT, WP:NOTHERE, as Thomas.W suggested, please let me know, since this was not my intention. Chicbyaccident (talk) 16:20, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Chicbyaccident: No, I did not suggest that your edits here on en-WP were any of what you claim above (I haven't checked your edits here well enough to be able to pass judgement on them...), what I did say on your talk page was that if you had made the same kind of edits, and displayed the same kind of behaviour, here as you made/did on sv-WP (and that got you blocked there), you would have been blocked here too. Which is very different from what you say in your post above... - Tom | Thomas.W talk 16:30, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you think that that comment pertains more to me personally than to this WikiProject, would you mind moving it to my talk page instead in order to discuss it there for convenience? Many thanks! Chicbyaccident (talk) 16:39, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Users have been asked clarify, but haven't. Do users who generelly prefer "Norse" over "Viking" have a different interpretation than what is stated on Vikings or Wiktionary:Viking? If we have a somewhat clear term at hand, Norse people (Wiktionary:Norse), wouldn't that be at least considerable for some instances in preference over Vikings? At least many preexisting entries seem to suggest that, such as Norse activity in the British Isles, Norse colonization of North America, etc. For more examples, see: Category:Norse people. Perhaps one or more of my suggestions could be argued against based on giving preference for some English language sources which still mirror a terminological ambiguity. Thanks! Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
