Hello! Could Dutch speakers help here, please? The notability of the Pickwick brand was questioned. English sources are scarce, true, but I have found news articles in Google News in Dutch, however, I don't speak the language and cannot determine if any are suitable to prove notability. If you could help with a few sources, it would be great. I'm sure there must be something in Dutch of a market leader local brand...? Thank you in advance. There is currently a dispute at Simone Manuel regarding the statement that Manuel is the first black woman to win a swimming gold in an individual event and whether or not Ranomi Kromowidjojo's racial background renders this statement incorrect for Manuel. There are two Dutch entomologists with similar names who were alive at roughly the same time. One is Samuel Constantinus Snellen van Vollenhoven (1816–1880) and the other is Pieter Cornelius Tobias Snellen (1832–1911). In species descriptions, the describer of a species is generally listed with his or her surname and the year of publication in the form "Snellen, 1875". "van Vollenhoven" looks to be the surname not just Snellen. To be sure, there will be two relevent documents, a birth certificate registered with the municipality will indicate the given name. The name of the father will also appear there. Also in 1811 all surnames had to be registered, so then you can determine whether "van Vollenhoven" or "Snellen van Vollenhoven" is correct. Our article says Sellen, which is probably wrong. Also Vollenhove is the name of a town that would be the origin of the name. This is not the place it says he was born, so it is not just a descriptive suffix. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 23:44, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

However this website indicates the surname is "Snellen van Vollenhoven", based on parents and sisters names: [3]. The extra long family name appears to have originated when Francois van Vollenhoven married Margarita Cornelia Snellen in 28 april 1782 in Rotterdam.[4] (all these sources need to be checked as they are potentially unreliable) Graeme Bartlett (talk) 23:59, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

I have run across several women through the years whose biographies say they were recognized for their contributions by the Dutch Queen/King. Is there a list or searchable gazette like the British Birthday Honours where one can find this information? The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

Today the Dutch city of Oss was struck by the severe train accident with a stint bicylce, which killed four children (4,4,6,8) and two more people very badly wounded in the hospital. Can someone explain me why this tragic events had turned into an article on Wikipedia? Oss_train_crash

Hi there! I am just starting to contribute to Wikipedia. First I wrote a couple of articles on the Dutch site, which I translated to the English Wikipedia. Amazing place. Absolutely fascinating. I joined this WPNL project a few days ago and I am doing a walk around town. I feel like a martian who just arrived on earth. I see a lot of beautiful buildings and places, some needing a fresh paint. I see also a lot of garbage and corpses lying around. I have not met many actual living people. So, what is the Netherlands WP about? The showcase FA class and GA class articles are gems in themselves but the full list looks like a rather random collection of topics. I guess that comes with the territory. There I came across that strange term: Netherlandish. Surely that is of interest for the WPNL? Early Netherlandish painting is one of our FA class articles. But most Netherlandish painters are not on our list: no Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden. Dieric Bouts, yes he is on our list. And the Limbourg brothers? No. Other famous Netherlandish people include our Hertog Jan, about whom I sang at primary school, John I, Duke of Brabant. He is not on our list. Ouch. Now we reach the part of Netherlandish literature. There is a canon of dutch literature list. Are the early Netherlandish authors on our list? Heinrich von Veldeke, yes. Jacob van Maerlant, no. Thomas a Kempis, no? What? another of my primary school famous names not on the list. What about Dutch music? The souterliedekens? No. Antwerp songbook? yes. I am pretty lost now. Erasmus? Fortunately, yes. Hey, there is Philips of Marnix, Lord of Saint-Aldegonde, author of our national anthem. What? No? Not on the list? Please, can anyone explain? I mean, seriously, what do you guys think about what does and what does not interest us as WPNL? Or should I just use my own judgement and place topics on our list? Or take some off the list? The image is full with symbolic references for which you have to be familiar with the time and the context. I wouldn´t dare to try. The author is Rijksmuseum. I suggest you ask the museum. This article may have problems of neutrality. It paints the activities of the foundation in a consistently positive light, repeats its viewpoints as fact, and presents a list of readings that are sympathetic to, or supportive of, its stated aims. The article also incorporates language derived from public statements made by the foundation. There is no in-text acknowledgement of these external sources, and no footnotes identifying them.

The article makes no mention of the controversial nature of the foundation in Dutch society. I find no citation of the many articles and websites that have voiced criticism of its stated aims. Their authors maintain, rightly or wrongly, that this is a right-wing foundation, engaged in the propagation of populist and potentially racist views under an intellectualist guise. The authors note, for example, that the foundation professes to raise public awareness about global overpopulation, but links it with the alleged overpopulation of the Netherlands. It calls for a 41% reduction of the Dutch population, from the current 17 million to 10 million. Whence its name. They also that the only effective measures to accomplish this aim -- setting aside the premature death of 2 out of 5 people living in Holland -- would involve a sharp reduction of immigration, if not a complete halt, and possibly the deportation of people who can be claimed, from certain viewpoints, not to belong in the Netherlands.

Judging from its website, the foundation does indeed hint at such measures, if only by reporting controversial viewpoints which it does nothing to contradict. Yet the measures have to do with Dutch national politics, rather than global overpopulation. Logic alone suggests that moving people elsewhere, or not letting them in to begin with, does nothing to reduce the world population. It is also a matter of logic that measures like these cannot solve a Dutch problem without creating one for other nations.

Observers have also noted that the foundation website mentions controversial public figures but makes no effort to distance itself from their chief nessage. These are the politicians Pim Fortuyn, Geert Wilders, and Thierry Baudet -- all of whom are widely perceived to engage, or to have engaged, in radical-right populism. On the contrary, the foundation appears to align itself with their viewpoints on population and migration.

I should also note that the article was created, and has been edited for the most part, by one and the same contributor who goes by the username "Janvanweeren". The only contributions to Wikipedia that this individual has made are to this particular article, "The Ten Million Club Foundation," nothing else. Tthe same is true of the Dutch Wikipedia article "Club van Tien Miljoen," where the same "Janvanweeren" accounts for the vast majority of edits. On the history page of the Dutch article, contributor "Janvanweeren" self-identifies (truthfully or not) as the Secretary of the foundation, who is indeed called Jan van Weeren. Let me emphasize that the personal identity of contributors to Wikipedia is nobody's business except their own. Yet it is fair to comment on a possibility raised by "Janvanweeren" himself, which if true would explain the problem in both the Dutch and English versions of the article, and would constitute a violation of Wikipedia's standards of integrity.

It is worth asking whether Wikipedia even needs an article on this particular foundation. It does not claim to have accomplished anything concrete, and seems interested mostly in gaining publicity -- for which purpose it apparently exploits Wikipedia as a platform.

It seems to me that Jan van L. is Jan Jacobus van Lonkhuijzen. See also J.J. van Lonkhuyzen on Commons. He was Head of the Health Service in Dutch East Indies. And yes, it seems likely that professor De Langen refers to Cornelis Douwe de Langen.Ruud Buitelaar (talk) 15:23, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I was trying to find sourcing for the song Zing, vecht, huil, bid, lach, werk en bewonder. It looks like it was a huge hit in the Netherlands and is one of Ramses Shaffy's most well known songs, but it lacks an article. Can anyone help me find sourcing to establish that it meets WP:NMUSIC? I can use Google translate on the news sources that pop up, but I have a feeling that there are going to be sources that won't show up for me since I'm in the US or will be in places I can't use GT. Yes, the song meets notability criteria. Not so much because it was a huge hit, which it really wasn´t (it never topped the charts) but it has become a classic, especially in the fight against cancer. For Het Parool newspaper it was the most beautiful dutch-language song of the 20th century. I would start by translating the very poorly sourced dutch-language Wikipedia article about the song and take it from there. The dutch-language article has some useful pointers. When searching wikipedia for disambiguation RDW I found in various articles the mentioned authority is translated in different ways. Hi Lembit Staan, thanks! You´re right, in 1994 the name Rijksdienst voor Wegverkeer was changed to Dienst Wegverkeer. Still, the abbreviation RDW was maintained. It is still the official abbreviation. The english translation used by the Department is Netherlands Vehicle Authority. I edited the entry on the disambiguation page. I just made some edits to the page Elsevier (magazine) and it looks to me like the periodical's name has changed, but, not speaking Dutch I'm not sure. Before I got to the article, it linked to http://www.elsevierweekblad.nl, which today is a dead link. I found https://www.ewmagazine.nl/ which uses the branding EW with what seems to be historical mention of "Elsevier". Should the title be changed to EW (Dutch magazine)? Yes you are right, the name has changed. In 2017, after RELX sold a majority stake in the weekly magazine Elsevier to ONE Business, RELX imposed a name change. The magazine called Elsevier was renamed Elsevier Weekblad, to avoid confusion with Elsevier, the publishing company, owned by RELX, which continues to publish scientific journals. The weekly magazine´s name is now Elsevier Weekblad and it uses the abbreviation EW. The title of the page should be Elsevier Weekblad, which as a redirect already exists. The article on the Rembrandt Research Project (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembrandt_Research_Project) gives a link to that project. However, the link seems to be outdated. I'm not an editor, but I suggest that you remove it.

As you state in the article, the RRP ended in 2011. It seems that after that, the ownership of the domain name relapsed, and subsequently was picked up by a porn company. The current RRP site was created six years after the end of the RRP, (https://uk.godaddy.com/whois/results.aspx?checkAvail=1&domain=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rembrandtresearchproject.org) and is now used to link to a couple of porn sites. If you scroll down to 'Rembrandt's Influences on the Art' you'll find those links. Moreover, you find no information about the project anymore, just a couple of pages with some generic information about the painter.

Since the website is not the homepage of the project anymore, and doesn't give any information about the Rembrandt Research Project, it seems inappropriate for this wiki article to link to that site. I made some minor edits, in particular of the opening line, according to the Manual of Style. My feeling is that the article as it is now leans too heavily on the Huygens ING biography cited in reference 1. More work is needed to obtain a more balanced article. I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

The Dutch word 'waard' stands for a type of flat and fertile land that has been formed by a river, but that is meanwhile protected by dikes, so that it can be used for agriculture (or other purposes) without having the risk of flooding. This as distinct from the Dutch word 'uiterwaard' (river foreland, d:Q333379), being a piece of land that is NOT protected by a dike, and so will flood periodically.

The difference between a 'waard' and a 'polder' is that a polder is completely surrounded by dikes, while a waard has only a dike along the river; the other sides are not protected by dikes because the land is (very) gradually sloping upwards, away from the river.

I don't know if there is an English word for a 'waard'. If not, then it could be useful to keep this page, not as a disambiguation page but instead as a page that can explain the meaning of this Dutch word. Then, (former) Grote Hollandse Waard and Hoeksche Waard, Alblasserwaard, Bommelerwaard, Lopikerwaard (and many others) can be given as examples. Erik Wannee (talk) 14:53, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

We dont need an English word to have articles about terms specific to particular cultures. Can you write up a stub for the term, with references? YOU may also consider an alternative to have a section "Vaard" in "Polder" . By the way, there is Alblasserwaard ans others in the Netherlands section of "Polder", so this can me a good place for clarification. The "Vaard" is good as rediret to this secction. The web site of the DTC is digitaltrustcenter.nl. Most information on the article Digital Trust Center must have been derived from that web site. Some paragraphs are more or less a translation of that web site. I added two references that refer to that web site. In Friesland, Dutch and Frisian are both official languages. About the official names of settlements in Friesland: according to the Dutch law 'Wet basisregistratie adressen en gebouwen' (article 1n), every settlement can have only one official name. Every municipality has the right to determine which name will be the official one. In 2021, the municipal council of the municipality Noardeast-Fryslân has determined that the Frisian names of all 22 settlements will be the official ones from 1-1-2023 on. Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Right now, after a requested move, we use Speaker of the House of Representatives consistently across Wikipedia, because that was most common at that time. However, as noted in this review, President of the House of Representatives has gained popularity in official sources. I thus believe we should change this (on Speaker of the House of Representatives (Netherlands) but probably on a lot of other places as well). My opinion on any official government titles, is that they should always be included with their native labels (even if that appears to be offensive to people who can'stand non latin script appearing in their Wikipedia snippets) along withh native audio. I say this as someone who has added quite a few Dutch historical terms against mild pushback over the years. Whatever the anglicized choice then becomes, it doesn't matter for local readers.
