Switch to a new map marker?

I think that the default 8px pog marker [ ] does a good and unfortunate job of hiding information. Prior to my change of the infobox map at Fort Alexander (Saint Petersburg) (the old version https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fort_Alexander_(Saint_Petersburg)&oldid=595004011), the marker hides several tens of kilometers of geographical features under it, making it slightly frustrating to see its relation to the relevant surroundings. A question of map scale, to be sure, but I was still thinking of a marker that would both mark the location clearly and yet provide a clear view of its centre. To my surprise, there seems to be a marker very similar to what I envisioned, File:Map_pointer.svg [ ]. The ring makes it easy to locate, and the small center dot doesn't block the actual feature that much. I could mock up some illustrative maps of their difference, but are there any thoughts for or against this change at this stage? ~ Nelg (talk) 04:32, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
