Nomination for Deletion

Notice

The article RadioJoyAlukkas.com has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This never took off, and was only kept because of WP:AGF (see talk page) . It should be deleted or merged

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Karikku

I am a new editor and I created a new article on the malayalam youtube channel- Karikku. An AFC editor who was impressed by my article, but did not know about the relevant sources used in it, asked it as a question in Wikiproject India. He recieved two indirect but positive responses, and is waiting for more. Please give your valuable comments at Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics#I need a notability check here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#I_need_a_notability_check_here) --Atlantis77177 (talk) 05:28, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol

New Page Patrol needs experienced volunteers
  • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles, including Kerala related articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
  • If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions and review our instructions page. You can apply for the user-right HERE. --John B123 (talk) 14:06, 23 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Notable tharavads/other Kerala families

Recently while contributing to the article on VK Krishna Menon, I found that the page about the Vengalil family itself had been deleted as non-notable after sixteen or so years of its existence. Presuming it's in the form that's preserved by Wiki mirrors, I agree that an article primarily focused on who married which king etc. is not of tremendous public interest except where such marriages involved major political events or the like.

But separately the deletion discussion is completely nuts. Major noble families and other families of note in Kerala who have extensive coverage in academic and news secondary sources *as families* uncontroversially meet the standard notability guidelines. We still have a page on the Alummoottil family, but won't if this sort of thing turns into a general purge.

I see no reason why Kerala families are of inadequate importance so as to not merit articles, while their analogues in, say, Europe, are uncontroversially treated as notable. The Vengalil family owned 200,000 acres of land in Malabar (and was as best I can tell the biggest landowner in Malabar) and intermarried with the Koothali Moopil Nairs extensively (eventually inheriting much of their estates), as well as with the Rajas of Kadathanadu and Komath thavazhi of the Koothalis, again inheriting lands like Kuttiyadi and Changaroth because of atypical gifting from fathers to sons, contrary to the matrilineal inheritance pattern. This is discussed extensively in the academic literature on everything from agrarian reform in Kerala, scholarship concerning the Mappila riots, land ownership and the politics of ceilings, etc., because families like the Vengalil and Koothali were of major importance as families (typically personified by whoever was karnavar). One user argues in the deletion discussion that the Vengalil were no more important than the Ankarath, Ambat, and Vadakke Kuruppath. That is patently bizarre, since the most famous Ankarath relative is Raman Menon, who was founded the Calicut branch of the Vengalil family (which eventually produced Krishna Menon, among others). Indeed, the deleted article discusses Ankarath cousins and their marital patterns. As for the Ambat and Vadakke Kuruppath, surely the presumption should be that if they meet the ordinary standards for notability, we cover them?

We don't have articles about Raman Menon, who was variously sarvadhikari in Calicut, then in Cochin, and ultimately Dewan of Travancore, and judge of the supreme court of that state. The story of his mother's flight from Palghat with her two young boys (the other siblings having presumably been killed) after the death of her husband, a prince of the Valluvanad royal family, is very well known in many parts of Kerala, and is reported on by secondary sources. We don't have articles about the Koothali Nairs or Kalliat Nambiars. We barely have one about the Mannarghat Nairs. The idea that moopil aristocratic families aren't notable seems to me... utterly fantastic.

Posting here because I'd like to contribute on these topics, from the scholarly literature, and this is presumably the place where standards can be fleshed out. Hölderlin2019 (talk) 08:40, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
