Help with Stub article

Hello everyone, I am new to editing on Wikipedia, and was trying to find more information on the article History of the Jews in Peru. I have found some sources so far on crypto-jews and the history of their persecution in the 17th century, but I am getting stuck trying to find more information on this topic. I was also wondering how I should tackle an article like this, and if there are any other articles that are good examples that are relatively similar in size to the article I am editing. Thank you verymuch!

Remember Baghdad (Documentary Film) listed at Requested moves

Hi guys, I am new to Wikipedia as a contributor and I just found this community, so I'm super excited to get involved. I just wrote up an article on a documentary film about the history of Iraqi Jewry and I have a few more articles that I would like to write up afterwards. So far the draft for the article is still under review, so I am wondering if it conforms to all of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and I would be glad to get your feedback. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Remember_Baghdad_(Documentary_film)

Any help especially c/e would be appreciated --Shrike (talk)

Need help appealing my article List of Jewish states and dynasties

I created the page Draft:List of Jewish states and dynasties. It started as an article, but became a draft because of a lack of citations. I retooled it, giving it somewhat more citations than the other "list of states and dynasties" pages and appealed for its restoration, which will take over three months. J390 (talk)

History section of Jews article needs revamped / rewritten

The 'History' subsection of the Jews article only covers Jewish history up to Babylon and Rome. Obviously, this is incomplete. It is missing 1900 years of Jewish history - the Middle Ages, modern times, the Holocaust, the establishment of Israel, etc etc etc.

There's been some discussion of this on the talk page. I tried to revamp the section, but I don't have the necessary knowledge (or time) to do it right. But having the main Wiki article on Jews not mention anything after 96 AD is not an acceptable state. I figured you guys were the right place to bring this issue for discussion and correction. Hope it can be remedied.

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Help Needed & Welcomed to get a page Approved

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Yitzhak_Suknik

This page about a fighter in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was deleted (now in Draft for 6 month reprieve) the main issues being:

1. Yitzhak is not important enough to be included in Wikipedia
2. Insufficient references
3. Too much on the events surrounding Yitzhak's actions compared to the Yitzhak himself.
4. Style

Point 1. I attempted to deal with this point here but got no response. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Koza_-_Yitzhak_Suknik

Point 2. I have used every source available, namely 5 books where his actions are described and I have edited the reference section etc.

Point 3. Re-edited and slashed to a minimum ( I think)

Point 4. Tried as much as possible but found the instructions and guides baffling.

I have received no response about the changes I have made since the original article.
The person who 'pressed the button' to delete the article freely admitted that they are not expected to be experts or knowledgeable in the field and are not obliged to reply to my counter arguments.
I am unsure of what else to do to get it approved. Any and all guidance welcome.
JSKutcher (talk) 06:56, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know (or care) much about military history, so this is not my forte, but I do know about using Yiddish language sources on Wikipedia and I can tell you that he is mentioned in several more Yiddish language books on the Yiddish Book Center's digital collection. When I search סוקניק Suknik in their Jochre search I get about 4 pages of results, many are about him and his participation in the Warsaw ghetto fighting, written by people not related to him after the war (general books about the Warsaw ghetto). I would be happy to farm the citations for you into the draft but I do wonder what happens when a group of people decides it should be deleted. For me I have been editing long enough to just post articles without anyone reviewing them and people generally ignore or leave them alone even if they are fairly obscure eastern european Jewish people (for example Joshua Rayzner who someone asked me to find more about on their behalf, and I put the info up there). Maybe someone else can weigh in on that side of it. Dan Carkner (talk) 18:11, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Dan. That is quite amazing about the number of references and your offer to farm the citations will be most welcome. My email address is Jeff.Kutcher@gmail.com. I quoted 5 sources where Yitzhak is mentioned, but that still does not seem to be enough, or as I said no-one has reviewed the changes I made. As you have indicated there's a lot more out there in Yiddish (and Polish) that has yet to be translated that must be a treasure of information.
I have been trying in vain to get an English version of Zivia Lubetkins 'In the Days of Destruction and Revolt' but alas as yet no luck. Many thanks Jeff JSKutcher (talk) 07:28, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than me emailing you some links, which (I assume) you may not be able to interpret, are you OK if I just introduce the citations into your draft sometime when I have a moment ? Dan Carkner (talk) 15:17, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That would be excellent. Many thanks. JSKutcher (talk) 19:38, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I made a few updates with what I could find in the YBC books. (Sometimes his name was spelled Sukenik too.) I wonder if my Yiddish book by Melekh Noy is the same as one of your sources Melech Neustadt (I'm not sure if you had the title right - I could not find it on Google Books or Worldcat to compare). I also created a Wikidata identity for Suknik for posterity and which can be linked to articles if they are ever actually published in English or other Wikipedias. I am still not sure what you will have to do to pass deletion. I find that whole process kind of opaque and arbitrary to be honest.
My other recommendations: try to consolidate the sections a bit more, make it more encyclopedic rather than breathless war reportage (Although I've certainly seen worse - but it does have a bit of that feel.) And to fix the citations a bit by finding the ones that are not formatted and enter them again as formatted citations the way I did (and the way you or someone else did on some of the sources used.) It's not difficult just click Cite>Templates>cite book at the top of the edit box and fill out the fields with what info you have on that book. Dan Carkner (talk) 23:57, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, many thanks for the references on the page. It does add to more weight.
I now have only 1 reference back to the website. I will try to find an alternative source for that.
Yes, Melech Noy and Neustadt are the same person [1]https://www.jta.org/archive/melech-noy-mapai-leader-dies-in-israel-was-author-of-several-books.
The Wikidata identity is new to me. I have added 2 new aliases: Icchak Sukiennik - his name on the list of those who died in the uprising that was sent to London in 1943 and (an odd one) Jicchak Sukiennik which is the spelling from the Hela Rufenstein's book " Farewell to Mila 18".
The process to pass deletion - opaque ? Sadly it is also demotivating, frustrating and complex. I understand the need for quality control but trying to figure out the rules is next to impossible.
I shall work on the citations & making it more encyclopediac. I really appreciate your comments and feedback. JSKutcher (talk) 15:03, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link about Noy. That explains him well. I posted it in the thread on the draft talk page too to explain why I think it's a reliable source. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance. And yes those alternate spellings of his name are a bit more Polish spelling I supposed. It would be nice to have his name in Polish orthography at the top of the article in brackets too, but I couldn't quite find it last night when I looked. Adding hebrew calendar dates (AM)

Wiki is a multidenominational encyopedia and should display hebrew dates (or at least years) for jews birth and death dates and jewish related events. Ok? Riskit 4 a biskit (talk) 16:29, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think extending it to all Jewish biographies would be a bit much but I could see it being relevant in some cases. Dan Carkner (talk) 16:52, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Will we also add Islamic dates to Islam-related people and events, Hindu dates for Hindu-related people and events, and Chinese dates to China-related people and events (etc)? This is a terrible idea. We should mention Hebrew dates when they are significant to the subject (such as when a Jewish holiday is defined by the Jewish calendar). In other cases, people who want the Hebrew date can convert it themselves or click on the link that takes them to the Hebrew wiki. Zerotalk 09:05, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Isnt wikipedia a multidenominational encyclopedia? Adding AM adds additional knowledge and interest to each article. Dont worry about other dating systems for the moment Riskit 4 a biskit (talk) 12:24, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not every possible fact is presented at the start of an article, only certain curated ones that are considered to be broadly useful, and according to broadly agreed upon rules of style. It's not a matter of spending thousands of hours of work just on principle, many of them will get reverted by people watching the articles even if you unilaterally decided to start adding them. I do agree there can be some cases where that info could be useful but you have to make a case as to why, for what reader, not just for the sake of principle. Dan Carkner (talk) 18:12, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can the Jewish wiki project create a Jewish biography template that has AM fields? Riskit 4 a biskit (talk) 21:11, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No, because there is clearly no consensus for it. Also, it seems I omitted to save my response to your earlier question. Wikipedia is NOT a multidenominational encyclopedia. Wikipedia is a NOdenominational encyclopedia, and this is the English branch. Zerotalk 01:33, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Antisemitism on page for "Supremacism"

The Jewish section of the Supremacism article is a hot mess of antisemitism. The portion on outreach to Noahides was claiming that Orthodox Judaism, or sects of it, are "racist" and believe non-Jews are "racially" inferior. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Jewish identity guidelines

Does WikiProject Judaism or WikiProject Jewish history have guidelines for when to classify subjects of biographic articles as "Jewish", "people of Jewish descent", etc? I have not seen any such guidance. I have noticed that many editors, who may be coming from a non-Jewish perspective and may not understand Jewish identity, inaccurately classify many Jews as non-Jews. I have seen Jewish descriptors removed from articles about secular Jews, formerly religious Jews referred to as "former Jews", and so forth. I have seen people placed into categories as being merely "people of Jewish descent", when they are indeed Jews. These presumably non-Jewish editors seem to not comprehend that Jewish identity is not only a religious identity, but a socio-cultural and ethnic identity as well. I have also seen non-Jewish Messianic Christians classified as Jews, when Jewish communities and Jewish movements overwhelmingly reject this self-identification.

One more issue; the categories for Ashkenazim, Sephardim, etc. There seems to be no guidance for when to classify a person as Ashkenazi or Sephardi. The categories are currently organized according to ancestry. People with both Ashkenazi and Sephardi ancestors are typically categorized as both. Ashkenazi and Sephardi identity is more complicated than that. Being Ashkenazi or Sephardi can be considered a person's minhag, their ethnicity, or both. An Ashkenazi Orthodox woman who marries a Sephardi man may adopt her husband's minhag and consider herself Sephardi. A person with mixed ancestry and an Ashkenazi father may only consider themselves Ashkenazi, due to minhag being passed down on the patrilineal line. A convert through Chabad will adopt an Ashkenazic minhag. I think it would be useful to clarify these distinctions in articles and categories and clearly state how we are classifying people.

For these reasons and others, I think it could be useful to have inclusive but clear guidelines for determining Jewish identity. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 10:03, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
