Certain statements in the above (locked) article require updating in the light of the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem on Monday 14 April 2018. Particular examples include "The United States has never officially relinquished its early support of the corpus separatum." and "official U.S. documents and web sites do not refer to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel" as well as various changes of tenses from presen/perfect to past or pluperfect. I raised the issue on the talk page but so far no action has been taken. A few of the regular editors in the IP-conflict area are stirring up the conflict by changing the consensus version (for as long as the article has existed) on East Talpiot, by changing the lead sentence according to the Palestinian narrative, and removing the fact that this is first and foremost a Jerusalem neighborhood. The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

The article is a mess. I ran down the WikiProjects it is tagged on, and posted in all. As for relevance here - Israel* is mentioned 119 times in the article, and Zion* 46 times (far outranking conservative*/torie* at 20, or Britain/UK/United Kingdon - at around 65). Furthermore - this is covered extensively and intensively in Israel based papers (e.g. Times of Israel, JPost, Haaretz). Basically, as I understand it - most of the British Jewish community (as well as elsewhere) see this as antisemitism. However, those engaged in this speech are for the most part claiming they are merely anti-Israel/Zionist or criticizing Israel - so that's not quite domestic and rather relevant to Israel. This also has ramifications regarding Aliya, e.g. Anti-Semitism is so bad in Britain that some Jews are planning to leave, CNN. Icewhiz (talk) 16:07, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

So there are a ton of articles on Kahanism and Kahanists, to the point of there being a category (actually three categories). Would it make sense to just make it into a series template? The reason why is that many of the articles are linked together, however many articles relating to the subject have not been updated. It is also common for ideologies, and other topics with several closely related pages to have an article series. Also regarding if it is notable enough, I think it is less a matter of if it is notable and more a matter of organization of the pages and allowing people to research the topic faster without having to deal with outdated pages. @K.e.coffman: - see hewiki - which this seems to be translated / taken from. The Hebrew wiki SNG is appearing in exhibits in a recognized venue, which he would pass - [1]. These two (local) items - [2][3] are fairly in depth on him. Seems his Hebrew name has a number of variants (but it is the same guy) - complicating things (last name - at times without the בר, suffix either of ה/א varying (גרמה/גרמא). The Israel Land Administration seems horribly outdated. For starters, it mentions that the Admin "soon it will be transformed into Israel Land Authority". That was done in 2009-10. Or the entire ILA-JNF land swap issue.

It also doesn't mention this pseudo-split that the Jewish National Fund had with the Authority in 2015, but that's not even on the JNF's own page. -- 95.90.221.155 (talk) 03:51, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

Several articles that I have recently submitted have been deleted. The reason given is that they do not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. According to the guidelines, Wikipedia requires significant coverage from reliable independent sources. All the entries deleted or proposed for deletion received extensive coverage in the Israeli English media, Globes, TheMarker and Calcalist. These articles were not paid for by the companies, the publications are the largest in the country with a good reputation for reliability and independence. How is that (the notability issue) even possible? I can understand if Wikipedia does not list any venture capital funds, however the funds I listed (Qumra Capital & Viola) are active funds and the same size as their international counterparts, many of which have entries on Wikipedia.Jakegreenblatt (talk) 16:45, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Or that they are notable and they are not worthy for deletion. There has to be single standard for notability. If these funds are mentioned in every single Israeli publication on multiple occasions over an extended period of time, they are notable. You can AfD them if they aren't notable. (What Number57 is saying is that because the article isn't under deletion process doesn't mean it's notable.) Also, as far as I know you are able to challenge the template put on the top of those articles (the 7 day one) and an AfD will most likely be opened up as a next course of action. • Large VCs are often notable, and the rather lively Hebrew financial press actually creates a lower bar in Israel in relatiomn to other locales. Would someone from this WikiProject mind taking a look at this article and assessing it? It was created by someone hired by Pazy's family and it was not submitted for review via WP:AFC. I've done a bit of minor clean up, but there's still some issues that need sorting, particularly with respect to the sourcing (it seems that most of them are to documents, etc. uploaded to Commons). I'm assuming the subject meets WP:ACADEMIC and is notable for an article to be written, but some serious trimming/rewriting might be needed to bring the article more inline with current policies and guidelines. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:07, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

He passes WP:NPROF. The article seems to be mostly a translation of the hewiki article (which is more than a bit looser than enwiki in the use of inline citations). The hewiki existed prior to pay work (since 2008), however the two paid editors (there) significantly expanded it. The piece itself is a bit PUFFERYish, and is over detailed perhaps in some respects - but it isn't terribly bad. The budgeting committee of the Council for Higher Education in Israel is a pretty significant body. Icewhiz (talk) 13:21, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for taking a look at this. If it's mainly a translation from Hebrew Wikipedia, then it needs to be attributed as such per WP:TRANSLATE and WP:TFOLWP; otherwise, it technically can be deleted as a copyvio. The creator has just been blocked as a sock puppet, so he/she is not going to be able to add the required attribution. Basically, Template:Translated page needs to be added to the article's talk page, but you need to be able to read the original source article to fill in the template's parameters. In this case particular there isn't a copyvio issue as the editor on hewiki and enwiki are the same person (this is the combined diff of Ovedc/ויקימנטור's work on hewiki on this article - they pretty much re-wrote/expanded the whole thing save for three sentences. When copying/translating one's own work one doesn't have to (though it is good practice) to attribute. I did however add the translate template - diff. In articles I've done cross-wiki (though usually English->Hebrew, I will note that the Hebrew translate notice is more important as hewiki allows translated articles that do not verify sources (based on the verification of the source wiki)) - e.g. Loitering munition (a funny one - started out identical, but other editors pulled it in different directions in both wikis (I'm still the prime author in both, but comments on talk / objections /etc were different - and this from shortly after creation) - and the English (GA) and Hebrew are now quite different) or Incendiary balloon I did not place a translated noticed as I "took full responsibility" for contents in both languages (including for all sources, etc.). • @Elmidae:, @ShimonChai: - I disagree with that redirect (there might be a different one possible - not sure) - as Coexistence in Israel refers only to coexistence in Israeli itself - between the Jewish majority and Arab minority citizens. It is a notable topic in and of itself (with many organizations trying to foster relations) - and is distinct from various regional initiatives or co-existence with Palestinians who are not citizens of Israel. Perhaps the question should be - what is the deal with capitalizing letters in the middle of the word ? I can't figure out why my added TemplateData for {{lang-he-n}} doesn't show up in the Visual Editor, making it annoying to use despite its utility in choosing correct fonts for displaying vowel-pointed Hebrew. Talk:1947–1949_Palestine_war#Vote (after reading Talk:1947–1949 Palestine war/Name)

In short, for more there a decade there is a problem with the titles of three articles: 1947–1949 Palestine war, 1947–1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine and 1948 Arab–Israeli War.
It was agreed that there is a need for a common prefix for these three articles, and a neutral title should be chosen. Hi all. I just want to preface this by saying that I'm pretty new to editing Wikipedia, and I am also not Jewish and I don't know much about Israeli culture or media - so I am posting out of random curiosity/interest as I don't have any knowledge to actually contribute to this WikiProject. Anyway, Netflix has just released their 5 part documentary miniseries "The Devil Next Door" on the trial of John Demjanjuk in Jerusalem the 1980s. From what I have been reading on twitter, a lot of people around the world are learning about this case for the first time through this docu-series. One of the people who gets the most screen time is Demjanjuk's Israeli defence lawyer, Yoram Sheftel. I have noticed that Sheftel does not have his own English language Wikipedia page, which seems odd because he definitely meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. In the documentary, he relishes in being 'the most hated person in Israel' at the time. A quick google has shown that he has continued to take really controversial cases throughout the years and that he regularly makes inflammatory/controversial statements on his radio show (apparently he was suspended from the radio just a few days ago?). Lots of people (such as myself) are going to look up his name after watching the Netflix series. I think he definitely needs his own article ASAP because this doco is going to drive a lot of traffic towards pages related to the Demjanjuk trial. But like I said, I don't have any knowledge or authority in this area, so I just wanted to throw this suggestion out to you all Apriljennifer (talk) 20:25, 9 November 2019 (UTC).

I just saw that there was a deletion discussion for an actor by the name of Guy Loel. It looks like he's really only acted in Hebrew language productions and shows, so I doubt that there will be much coverage in English about him. His IMDb profile shows that he's had a lot of roles in various TV shows and over multiple episodes, so I didn't know if there was anyone here who would be willing to do a search for Hebrew language sourcing. I'll try to do what I can, but I don't really have the ability to search in Hebrew since I'm not familiar with the language. In each case it says in the lead that that is what the place is. Philosophy of human settlements and how they make other humans feel. Talpiot is a neighborhood. If you stand in Talpiot, you could say that it "constitutes" as an illegal Israeli settlement. You could say that Talpiot is not in "recognized" Israeli territory or to say that it was "illegally" constructed. But Talpiot looks, acts and feels simply like a neighborhood in Jerusalem. The term "settlement" first and foremost refers to a human settlement. A neighborhood is part of a city, the latter being a type of settlement. I guess that would mean that a neighborhood is also a settlement. But the term "Israeli Settlement" refers specifically to Israeli settlements that were built in the West Bank after 1967. Now, East Jerusalem neighborhoods clearly constitute as Israeli settlements, because they are some type of a human settlement, built by the Israeli people, outside of the Green Line, after 1967. With that said, in practice, they are neighborhoods in the city of Jerusalem no matter what people 'think' or what is the people's 'opinion' about the whole topic. Therefore, I think that WarKosign's description is sufficient. Someone who reads about Talpiot knows already the legal situation, thanks to the lead section. And people with a bit of common sense would spot that it doesn't say "Jerusalem" but say "East Jerusalem". An innocently, ignorant reader, with a very low sense of curiosity but enough ambition to read for five whole minutes, would be able to understand that Talpiot is a neighborhood in East Jerusalem, regarded by the international community as an illegal Israeli settlement, which is obviously the least interesting thing about Talpiot. Most of the people who read about Talpiot are not random readers from an Igloo who never heard about the place and came across the name by accident. These are people who know a thing or two about Israel, Palestine, and Jerusalem, and probably wish to learn more about one of the three. So putting "Israeli Settlements" after every five words in these articles, their infoboxes, their categories, their wiki links, their "see also" sections and now their short description, as if they are fresh Golan Heights wine bottles marked by the EU, is both unnecessary and annoying. For Israeli or Jewish readers, this is unpleasant, as if it implies a secret or clear hostile POV of Wikipedia, that not only it favors the International opinion (which makes sense, even though it is also a Palestinian POV) but it also shoves it up in your face as if Wikipedia was Muhammad Ali and "Israeli Settlements" were his fists. I think we can all say that pro-Israeli editors have unhappily accepted the reality in which people who murder babies in their beds are labeled as "assailants" by Wikipedia, in order to preserve NPOV or something like that, which is quite upsetting (no one dares saying anything about 9/11), so can you at least, not degrade anything related to our land our place of inhabitance which we have built and developed for years, as illegal under international law?

Long story short, I give no damn about the actual dispute. This is Wikipedia, and it feels like Wikipedia is repeating "Israeli settlement" too much, when it is clear enough already, and frankly shifts readers from the actual topics of the articles, and also disappoint many of the Israeli and Jewish readers who simply want to read about what they honestly think are neighborhoods in their country, when there is already enough information about their legal status. The idea that a minority opinion should replace a super-majority one because of how it feels to you to stand in Talpiot or any other settlement is a non-starter. The short description can include both if you insist, but it must include settlement, because as you note that features prominently in the coverage of Talpiot and as a result in our article. There are lots of things that are unpleasant to Palestinian readers, or hell to me, and you know what? That doesnt mean squat. We have requirements for content here, WP:NPOV chief among them, and any argument based on how something feels to you or anybody else likewise does not mean squat. I think WarKosign's description is sufficient on the merit of the fact it says "East Jerusalem". If we can't have a consensus for that, I would push that the order would be "...is a Jewish neighborhood...in...East Jerusalem". Im generally fine with neighborhood and Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem (which is what it says now, with the addition of settlementsouthern), for the EJ settlements and only the EJ settlements. We are supposed to reflect the balance of sources here, not determine what that balance should be. It is a fact that sources refer to the so called Ring Neighborhoods as both neighborhoods and as settlements. So we have to reflect that balance. That balance is much more skewed in the case of both the West Bank (minus EJ) and the Golan settlements, so we likewise reflect that balance. Following a discussion at Talk:Jabel_Mukaber#map_and_caption, the proposal was raised to use a map of Jerusalem. When a map of East Jerusalem only was proposed, I started looking for a map of Jerusalem, preferably by neighborhoods, and noticed that there is no such map on Wikipedia. The page Politics of Israel says that Politics in Israel is dominated by Zionist parties. It is a weird statement for the following reasons: Zionism is a movement for creation of a Jewish state. Israel has been created by UN in 1948 as a Jewish state. The current politics of Israel is not about discussing whether the state of Israel should exist as a Jewish state - it already does. It would be helpful if the topic of Politics of Israel was covering Israeli politics in context of Parliamentary Democracy - this would help users to put it in the right context. Hello, I wish to make editors aware of a discussion that is occurring on Wikimedia commons. Here is the link [4]. A creator has uploaded a barnstar with Nazi imagery that is intended to be awarded to editors who work on articles related to Nazism. Its not for articles - it is specifically intended for use on a userpage which the author makes clear here [5]. The Gush Etzion article is under coordinated attack by 3 pro-Palestinian editors, who are trying to impose their POV on that article. There is some discussion at User_talk:11Fox11#Your_reintroduction_of_an_redirection, but the pro-Palestinian editors ignore that discussion and the Wikipedia rules and guidelines, and try to push their POV with brute force, as usual. @Rh0809 and David O. Johnson: Can I suggest that no articles on new minor political parties are created prior to the upcoming elections unless there is polling that suggests the party will win seats? Prior to the last few elections we had a rash of articles on no hopers like Liberal–Economic Power, New Liberal Party (2019 party), New Horizon (political party), Me and You - The Israeli People's Party etc. Likewise, I would suggest no articles should be created on alliances until they are 100% confirmed as competing and likely to win seats, to avoid another United Jewish Home. I concure that not every party that exists should get an article, however, I believe that it is justified to create parties led by notable public figures who consistently make it on to polling data. This includes the parties of Shelah and Zelikha, but excludes the Freedom Party which was once known as Liberal-Economic Power. If we exclude parties that do not win seats, then why have an article on Otzma Yehudit. They are consistently below the threshold and do not come close to winning seats. Shelah and Zelikha, however, may indeed be in teh next knesset, with their parties joining either Huldai, Gantz, Lapid or someone else. Rh0809 (talk) 14:56, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

For areas that have been formally annexed, I think it makes sense to have categories of both Israel and Palestine. For example, Crimea is categorised as both a region of Ukraine and Russia. You are now, nearly two years later, coming in to dispute it, and so the next sentence of WP:Consensus then applies: "Should that edit later be revised by another editor without dispute, it can be assumed that a new consensus has been reached. ". But your later change has been disputed, almost immediately, thus we can't assume it has consensus. You need to show that there's a consensus for your new version, and you haven't done so. Ridiculous, that's not how these categories work, here, or elsewhere. The Gezer Calendar , for example, was discovered in 1908, but is correctly listed in the "Archaeological discoveries in Israel" category . Statue of Ebih-Il is correctly listed as discovered in Syria, even though its discovery predated the creation of that state by 10 years or more. You might want to thing through your logic here, because it would preclude virtually anything from being listed under the "Archaeological discoveries in Palestine" category. There is a lot of biases against israel on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict which is to be expected from a very controversial subject such as this, but we need more concrete information on the history and hows they were both offered a state and that palestinians declined saying we want it all. I might also sound bias and I get that but I am hoping that I could work with a team from both sides to help edit and provide only facts and no opinions mixed in.

Personally it seems to me like it might, but it should fit the criteria for inclusion on Wikipedia. The main criterion is verifiability, and second is notability – if a subject has non-trivial coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources, then it is generally considered notable and verifiable.

If you have multiple features whose subject is this specific website, then yes, it warrants its own page. This applies to any other subject, in general. Sometimes there can be exceptions in either direction (less coverage might still warrant an article, or more coverage might not), but these don't apply to subjects like the ones you asked about.

This was accepted at AFC, but I am concerned about its referencing. Were I able to read Hebrew I would be able to assess my concerns directly, but I have to use machine translation. It is a paid contribution by a self declared paid editor (allowed under the rules), but the referencing appears to be churnalism, and does not aid the article in passing WP:NCORP in a documented and referenced manner. That renders it vulnerable to a deletion process even though I am 90% sure the org passes WP:NCORP.

@WarKosign We cannot dismiss facts, no, but a press release does not add any value to passing NCORP. A press release is a primary source and/or a self published source, so carries zero weight. Respectable sources also carry press releases. Thus a press release prevents that source in a particular case from being independent of the subject, even if it is reliable, whereas a well constructed piece of journalism in the same source is reliable, independent and, assuming it is significant coverage, is useful for establishing notability

This article is also a paid placement (declared by the creating editor), thus is worthy of a stringent examination.

Where it is a press release, {{primary source inline}} is an ideal template to place following the closing </ref> tag. Editors will then find it easier to examine the article for compliance with policy.

At Talk:Yarkon Park, we are attempting to determine the date the park was opened.

The park's website says:"Planning of the park began in 1969, and it was opened to the public in 1973."

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

Hello everyone!!! I am posting here at User:Loew Galitz's prompting. In several Jewish towns, there are badly mangled Arabic transliterations of the Hebrew names. For example Or Yehuda or Kiryat Haim. Some are tagged with "romanization needed", but there is no romanization because it the same name as Hebrew with a letter to letter mapping. For example Or Yehuda is rendered as "أور يهوده" in Arabic. This amount to a letter-to-letter conversion, but has nothing to do with the underlying language. Or, light, is in Arabic nur نور. But the name that is used is أور with an Alef. The is a simple mapping of א to أ, then ו to و, and ר to ر. Same with יהודה (Yehuda) that is mapped letter-letter to يهوده, but Arabic has its own way of writing Judah and Judas, and it is يهوذا, ending with an alif and not ha: Arabic Wikipedia of Judah (son of Jacob).

Taking or Yehuda further, there is no Arabic on the town's website, logo, or welcome sign. The CBS doesn't have Arab residents in the town, it is a Jewish town. There is little to no Arabic in the city.

Arabic does have a special status in Israel, but it only has effect in Arabic or mixed zones, not in towns without Arabs.

I propose that these not good Arabic transliterations be removed from towns without Arab population or Arab ties. It is one matter when a town has an Arab name, like Lod: اللد derives from the same place, but is not a letter to letter mapping of לוד. Sounds reasonable. If there is no source for an Arabic name of a place, then there is probably no cultural or historical reason to include it. I was simply checking (and then correcting) the comment above: The CBS doesn't have Arab residents in the town, it is a Jewish town. There is little to no Arabic in the city. The Arab spelling of Or Yehuda on this page says "أور يهودا", compared to "أور يهوده" on the Or Yehuda article. With my (extremely limited) knowlege of the Arabic alphabet, I think it's a difference between "Or Yehuda" and "Or Yehudah".

I do not think it's reasonable at all to presume that Arab residents have a different name for a city. Does an Arab resident of, say, New York have a different name for it? Having a different name for a city in different languages is an exception and not a rule, this does happen of course, but mostly for important and ancient cities that had a chance to become a part of a culture. For most of the cities they use the only name the city has, only transliterating it to Arabic. Original name of the place was Ono. However, I meant original name of the modern town. My point is that this locatations (and many others) don't have an "Arabic" or "Hebrew" name - they have a signle name that originates from one language (depending on the history of the location) and that is the name that should be transcribed to English for this wikipedia. There are larger populations of Russian speakers, French speakers, Ethiopian Jews who speak Amharic and Tigrinya, and foreign Thai, Sudanese, Eritrean, and other nationality workers. The above is a valid discussion, but my point was that an English reader has no idea whether the arabic writing is a transliteration from hebrew or natural arabic name. Therefore I requested that there must be always a romanization from arabic. There is no such thing as "there is no romanization" The best you can say "we don't have reliable sources that provide romanization". Few notes on what has been written above. First of all, Israel, at least until recently (can't really tell anymore), had Arabic as an official language. Whether there are Arab citizens in Israel towns or not, does not change the fact that Or Yehuda does have an Arabic transliterated name on road signs. I see no problem with the fact that the Arabic name is a complete transliteration of the Hebrew one. Nobody calls the village of Jisr az-Zarqa as "The Blue Bridge" or הגשר הכחול. Hebrew speakers know this place by its Arabic name. Now, even if no Arabs live in Or Yehuda, which as Oncenawhile has pointed out, is false, still there are Arabs who work at Or Yehuda or visit it for all sort of occasions. If you go to Israel's National Insurance website in Arabic, you will have a page dedicated to Or Yehuda using the Arabic transliteration which is not bad. An Arab going to Or Yehuda wouldn't tell the cab driver "please drive me to Nur al-Yahuda". As for the tag, you may remove it and change "Arabic" to "Arabic transliteration" if it is the case, unlike places with actual Arabic names such as Lod or Nazareth. Going by the ethnicity of the residents would probably force us to give the Russian transliteration of Bat Yam, which is an idea I personally find interesting, but I'll keep it with English-Hebrew-Arabic names. You don't see the point because you didn't comprehend my opening statement. I don't care about Arabs and Jews (and Druzes) of Israel riding cab to Nof haGalil or to Ne'ot Hovav. The point is that this is the English-language wikipedia, and an English reader does not have a freaking idea what the heck تلال أبوبكا means and how it sounds. Do you? While one may reasonably expect that the Hebrew spelling reasonably matches the English-language title of the article for an Israeli place, there is no such expectation for an Arabic spelling, because we know that many places in Israel have both Hebrew and Arabic names, sometimes completely different, sometimes literal translations, sometimes slight modifications, sometimes translit. Bolter21 is incorrect to say that Or Yehuda has Arabic signs of any significant number, the large majority of signs in Or Yehuda are bilingual in Hebrew top and English below, followed by monolingual Hebrew signs. The trilingual sign he points out is the National Roads Company of Israel sign, a national level sign on roads designated as part of the national system. The National Road company's transliterations have been ridiculed in https://www.haaretz.co.il/misc/1.1151743 as an example. The current road authority system is listed here https://www.gov.il/he/departments/general/names_destinations_training_signage and it is not a good transliteration, but instead a simplified transliteration for road signs, with the goal of rendering the shortest name possible for fast reading, for example the road authority transliteration avoids double letters. The value of the road authority transliteration is low, it is not a real name, but just a way to read the road sign in non-Hebrew letters. There are significantly more Russian speakers in Jewish towns than Arabs, adding Russian transliterations would be more justifiable than Arabic in this locations, but it just isn't needed on the English Wikipedia. חוקרת (Researcher) (talk) 06:08, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

There isn't any justification in adding Russian transliteration either. Transcribing the Russian spelling of Hod HaSharon to English would result in "Khod KhaSharon", "Chod ChaSharon" or "God GaSharon" since Russian doesn't have a direct equivalent for He (letter) while English lacks a direct equivalent for Kha (Cyrillic). • (A) Give a Romanization, if it differs from Hebrew (e.g. Sha'ar HaGai vs. Bab al-Wad).
• (B) Mention that it is a transliteration from Hebrew (or an approximate transliteration therefrom) (e.g. Or Yehuda)
• (C) Mention that Hebrew is a transliteration from Arabic.
• (D) If the issue is more complex that, give details in the "Etymology" section.

PLEASE do not sidetrack and answer two questions:

• (Q1) Is my concern valid?
• (Q2) Is my solution good? If not, explain drawbacks and suggest a better solution.

A. I agree

B, if the Arabic is only a road sign transliteration and not a real name then it should be omitted, because it doesn't interest the reader. If it is included for a bizarre reason, then it should be noted it is a transliteration.

C. The Hebrew official name should always be present in Israel, because it is official and exists in many sources. If the Hebrew name is a mere transliteration of the Arabic, then it should be noted it is just a transliteration. There are much fewer localities in Israel that are mere transliteration of the Arabic name, this only happens for new Arab settlements that don't have ancient history and an associated historic Jewish name.

D. I agree if there are sources.

Q1. Yes, I agree that Arabic transliterations copied from road signs without any note on their provenance being a simplified transliteration of the Hebrew name are of no value to an English reader and are illegible without an explanation.

Yes, Apopka is a good example, isn't it? :-) Because you cannot tell Apopka from Abubka written in Arabic script, and the place is called Apopka, not Abubka, and the difference is simply due to the deficiency of Arabic translit. Jokes aside, I did have troublles when reasearching Hebrew bios I wrote, such as Naomi Henrik or Mordechai Kikayon, because I have to "forward-guess" possible transliterations of the names from Hebrew into English, because of non-typical names. Because it is in Israel. All official documents in Israel are in Hebrew. Media is in Hebrew. If you want to find sources on the town, the Hebrew name is important. I know get what the people are saying here, and think it would make sense to remove the Arabic transliteration from Or Yehuda. I still think that at least all Israeli cities should be presented in a trilingual form with the bad transliterations simply because these are the formal languages of Israel, but I guess it is up to Israel to decide to commit to its trilingual policy and not us here in the English Wikipeida. This is a tough one. While the trilingual nature of Israel can be debated, it would make absolutely no sense to remove Hebrew names from any Israeli locality cause that's the language of the land. Maybe I personally get to attached to these names (unlike WarKosign who shares my place of living) but I suspect many of the readers on articles such as Or Yehuda, one of the most insignificant towns in the world, do know how to read Hebrew letters. Since all three languages don't share a single alphabet, I think it has a certain value to see how it is written in another language, and also there's a value in seeing that it is pronounced exactly the same. I don't know why, but it feels right to see Cyrillic names on towns in Serbia such as Ada even though I can't read a single word in Cyrillic. It provides a certain tone to the town, that this is how people driving to Ада perceive it. So no, writing the Russian name of Bat Yam was a joke, but I think it least the most consistent and stable (though obviously not perfect) way is to go by national road signs.--Bolter21 (talk to me) 19:17, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Arguing against myself: if an English speaker (someone with English set as their default language in the browser) googles Arabic spelling of Or Yehuda, they would probably find the English wikipedia artcile helpful, and for that to work the page has to include the Arabic spelling of the name. So perhaps it is useful to include spelling of city names in both Hebrew and Arabic. The way it is currently framed, it is "an operation", so it is little surprise that the focus in on the planned actions of said operation. If you think this is incorrect framing, then you can make your opinions known in the ongoing move discussion, where a range of more neutral alternative titles have been proposed. Hi,

Most companies on the TA 125 index have an article, it seems like a no-brainer. Yet, a draft for Israel Canada was declined recently, even though it is one of the most prominent Israeli real estate companies in Israel and the main sponsor for Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club, as well as having Subsidiaries that are responsible for some of the most ambitious real estate projects in Israel today.

The decline was made by stating that the article was not supported by the references; it was said it only had routine mentions. Which is not true. Obviously, since it is an Israeli company, most mentions are from Israeli websites, but they are notable news organizations such as Globes, Calcalist, The Jerusalem Post, etc.

If I can please have some assistance from active members of this project so I may improve the draft and get it approved, it would be appreciated.

The article is too long when it comes to Halakha and pure theology (although it can be further divided into sub-articles), while too short when it comes to its practical applciation in Israel (how the permit thing is mentioned on packaging, how many Haredim "boycott" the permit etc.)

Would someone mind taking a look at the citations to Hebrew sources in the article Party lists for the 2022 Israeli legislative election and checking to see whether they're translated correctly? I tried cleaning them up as best as I could using Google Translate, but I don't understand Hebrew so I don't know how accurately the source names were translated. Since I also don't know how to romanize Hebrew, I left the |title= parameters blank; so, if someone can fill those in, then that would be appreciated. FWIW, I don't know whether the sources cited are reliable; I only was trying to clean them up in response to a question posted at the Wikipedia Teahouse not too long ago. Thanks for double checking things Alaexis. Do you think you could add the romanized version of the Hebrew script to the |title= parameter of each citation to a Hebrew source. Google Translate isn't much help with that. The syntax for the relevant citation template parameters should look like |script-title=he:Hebrew script, |title=Romanized Hebrew and |trans-title=English translation of Hebrew. I've found sources for most of the biographical details, but struggling to pin down "He was born in San Diego where his parents studied, and the family moved to Israel in 1971" also I can't see a definitive source that his mother was called Rachel. This may be in one of the sources over at הלל גורדין – ויקיפדיה (wikipedia.org) or he:אורי_גורדין but I'm not able to read them, would appreciate anyone sourcing the above either here, and I'll put it in, or at the article directly. Hey, someone uploaded this image to Commons, claiming it depicts Jerusalem's Lions' Gate some time in the late 1960s. Except it doesn't, numerous details do not fit. So the question is, what does it actually show? Users on Hebrew wiki have pointed out that Lions or Leopards are popular motifs of Sultan Baybars or Lebanon's Shihab dynasty. Due to restoration of US copyright in the wake of the URAA, post-war images from Israel are usually still under US copyright. Therefore, they should not be hosted on Wikimedia Commons or as free files on the English Wikipedia, and they are liable to be deleted from there as soon as someone gets round to it. In particular, this affects the portrait images of a number of politicians such as those in commons:Category:Members of the First Knesset and Category:Members of the Second Knesset etc. It is likely that a large percentage of them are eligible for non-free use as infobox images on the English Wikipedia, but this would have to be considered on a case by case basis. Any support from this WikiProject in transferring such image from Commons to Wikipedia non-free use and creating appropriate rationales would be highly welcome! We have made a new article: Iranian democracy movement that is intended as a WP:Broad concept article covering the political movements and many protests calling for regime change, and a new constitutional framework for Iran, in accord with the demands and aspirations of the Iranian people. It follows upon a recent summit meeting of diaspora opposition leaders, but not limited to that group or event alone. I first notified the other project of course: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Iran#New_Article_-_Iranian_democracy_movement, but thought to post it here as well, since its linked on the article Iran–Israel_proxy_conflict. There its noted that the regime often accuses these dissidents and opposition of being "Israel's army". Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Came across Mizrachi (religious Zionism) which is really a mishmash of a page. The page began as a stub in May 2004 and went from there. There's no mention of the World Mizrachi Organization and what it does. Id like to improve it and wrote as such on the talk page. These concerns were first brought up in 2004 and then someone followed up with a comment 2 and a half years later!

I have taken the long overdue step of creating an Al-Aqsa Mosque compound page to encompass the full architectural history of Al-Aqsa all in one place. This was not done previously, with there being separate articles for the Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque and Minarets of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, etc., but no single page drawing them all together historically and architecturally. The temple mount page provides some architectural overview, but it is so bound up in narrating the full history of the site and is substructure (so much so that it uses the 'mountain' infobox template, not the 'religious building' one) that it has never done full credit to the actual superstructure. A question was asked at the IDF Talk page on consistent spelling of defense/defence. I answered as best as I could. Absent some really distinct, well-defined, well-documented Israeli English written variant, would this WikiProject be interested in making some generic guideline, such as to prefer American English spelling for Israel-related articles (or at least those of the past few decades)? (As to the question of 'If it ain't broke, why bother?' -- imo it's much better for everyone to state explicitly somewhere that some US-like style is preferred, with plain reasoning and sources, rather than to just take for granted that the US style will be dominant on WP.) The page Post-Zionism is a disaster of a piece of content at present. It's almost wholly unsourced, could potentially be a personal essay, and the only sources are some op-eds, not scholarship. The last source "Days with the Arab Israelis in Jaffa" does confirm that he was the chief editor of Ash-Shams in Cairo and then published a newspaper called Reshumot in Israel (though I'm not sure it's that Reshumot), so it looks okay. Just looking to see if the sources contain sigcov rather than only passing mentions (that's the bar it has to pass to get through AfC) and that the translation is competent overall. Yeah, there are no problems with translation (I've re-checked the article and it's the right Reshumot).

Regarding the notability, it's a bit of a borderline case. In the 1948 Haaretz article he's mentioned as an editor of Al-Shams who emigrated to Israel and started working at Reshumot. In the 1926 Palestine daily mail article he's mentioned briefly but described as an "important writer." I haven't checked the other sources, maybe we can ask the editor who wrote it to tell us which source gives the most extensive coverage. Alaexis_¿question? 22:29, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

There's a page in English WP entitled Israel Today but it's a redirect to Israel Hayom.^[1] However a print and online Israel Today is published in English,^[2] German ^[3] and Dutch;^[4] an archived page mentions Japanese, Korean and Norwegian editions.^[5] At one time it described itself as a news agency run by Israeli believers in Yeshua.^[6]

Dutch WP has https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Today. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Israel_today it appears there once may have been an article in English WP. Whether or not an English WP article is justified https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Israel_Today&redirect=no needs editing. Mcljlm (talk) 22:19, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

The redirect gets about 10 visits a day (likely all bots). While Israeli Today (1978) does exist, and is apparently noted on Dutch Wikipedia, I don't believe it's notable under English Wikipedia criteria, and the expectation that Israel Today redirects to Israel Hayom makes more sense as the main target.
