Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Israel/Archive 6

Certain statements in the above (locked) article require updating in the light of the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem on Monday 14 April 2018. Particular examples include "The United States has never officially relinquished its early support of the corpus separatum." and "official U.S. documents and web sites do not refer to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel" as well as various changes of tenses from presen/perfect to past or pluperfect. I raised the issue on the talk page but so far no action has been taken. I imagine that this is because the talk page does not get that many visitors - I am therefore bouncing my request over to here, a busier place where it may attract the attention of someone willing and able to do the work. 62.190.148.115 (talk) 10:43, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Editors stirring up IP-related conflict on East Talpiot

A few of the regular editors in the IP-conflict area are stirring up the conflict by changing the consensus version (for as long as the article has existed) on East Talpiot, by changing the lead sentence according to the Palestinian narrative, and removing the fact that this is first and foremost a Jerusalem neighborhood. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:42, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

What an absolute mess (much like the real life situation). And why is it relevant to this WP? I can see the article is tagged for WP:Israel, but it's a domestic British issue. Highlighting it on this board would appear to be bordering on canvassing. Number 57 15:48, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
The article is a mess. I ran down the WikiProjects it is tagged on, and posted in all. As for relevance here - Israel* is mentioned 119 times in the article, and Zion* 46 times (far outranking conservative*/torie* at 20, or Britain/UK/United Kingdon - at around 65). Furthermore - this is covered extensively and intensively in Israel based papers (e.g. Times of Israel, JPost, Haaretz). Basically, as I understand it - most of the British Jewish community (as well as elsewhere) see this as antisemitism. However, those engaged in this speech are for the most part claiming they are merely anti-Israel/Zionist or criticizing Israel - so that's not quite domestic and rather relevant to Israel. This also has ramifications regarding Aliya, e.g. Anti-Semitism is so bad in Britain that some Jews are planning to leave, CNN. Icewhiz (talk) 16:07, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
In that case, I would suggest it would be equally appropriate to notify WP:Palestine as there are 45 mentions of Palestine or Palestinians. Number 57 16:25, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Article series on Kahanism?

So there are a ton of articles on Kahanism and Kahanists, to the point of there being a category (actually three categories). Would it make sense to just make it into a series template? The reason why is that many of the articles are linked together, however many articles relating to the subject have not been updated. It is also common for ideologies, and other topics with several closely related pages to have an article series. Also regarding if it is notable enough, I think it is less a matter of if it is notable and more a matter of organization of the pages and allowing people to research the topic faster without having to deal with outdated pages. These two (local) items - [2][3] are fairly in depth on him. Seems his Hebrew name has a number of variants (but it is the same guy) - complicating things (last name - at times without the בר, suffix either of ה/א varying (גרמה/גרמא). First name - at times with a hypehn (עמיקם vs. עמי-קם). Icewhiz (talk) 09:17, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

"Israel Land Administration" horribly outdated

The Israel Land Administration seems horribly outdated. For starters, it mentions that the Admin "soon it will be transformed into Israel Land Authority". That was done in 2009-10. Or the entire ILA-JNF land swap issue.

It also doesn't mention this pseudo-split that the Jewish National Fund had with the Authority in 2015, but that's not even on the JNF's own page. -- 95.90.221.155 (talk) 03:51, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

Meeting Notability Guidelines

Several articles that I have recently submitted have been deleted. The reason given is that they do not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. According to the guidelines, Wikipedia requires significant coverage from reliable independent sources. All the entries deleted or proposed for deletion received extensive coverage in the Israeli English media, Globes, TheMarker and Calcalist. These articles were not paid for by the companies, the publications are the largest in the country with a good reputation for reliability and independence. How is it that this does not equate to notability, please explain?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jakegreenblatt (talkcontribs) 16:11, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Despite the denial, your pattern of editing really does make it look like you may be a paid editor. Do you really not have any conflict of interest with any of the companies you have written articles on? Number 57 16:21, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Is that the issue, or notability?Jakegreenblatt (talk) 16:32, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes, it's a very serious issue. But to be honest, I'm struggling to see much notability either. Number 57 16:37, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
How is that (the notability issue) even possible? I can understand if Wikipedia does not list any venture capital funds, however the funds I listed (Qumra Capital & Viola) are active funds and the same size as their international counterparts, many of which have entries on Wikipedia.Jakegreenblatt (talk) 16:45, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. It may well be the case that the other articles are not really notable either, but no-one has nominated them for deletion yet. Number 57 17:01, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Or that they are notable and they are not worthy for deletion. There has to be single standard for notability. If these funds are mentioned in every single Israeli publication on multiple occasions over an extended period of time, they are notable. Surely Wikipedia wants to have a single standard for notability? Jakegreenblatt (talk) 17:17, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
You can AfD them if they aren't notable. (What Number57 is saying is that because the article isn't under deletion process doesn't mean it's notable.) Also, as far as I know you are able to challenge the template put on the top of those articles (the 7 day one) and an AfD will most likely be opened up as a next course of action. ShimonChai (talk) 17:22, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Large VCs are often notable, and the rather lively Hebrew financial press actually creates a lower bar in Israel in relatiomn to other locales. I would suggest reading WP:NCORP - what os relevant is INDEPTH, independent, hogh quality secondary sources - if you have those, you will pas an AfD.Icewhiz (talk) 20:39, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Yehoshua Ben-Arieh, translation from Hebrew

I would appreciate anyone translating Yehoshua Ben-Arieh from the Hebrew article into English, cheers, Huldra (talk) 22:23, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Would someone from this WikiProject mind taking a look at this article and assessing it? It was created by someone hired by Pazy's family and it was not submitted for review via WP:AFC. I've done a bit of minor clean up, but there's still some issues that need sorting, particularly with respect to the sourcing (it seems that most of them are to documents, etc. uploaded to Commons). I'm assuming the subject meets WP:ACADEMIC and is notable for an article to be written, but some serious trimming/rewriting might be needed to bring the article more inline with current policies and guidelines. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:07, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

He passes WP:NPROF. The article seems to be mostly a translation of the hewiki article (which is more than a bit looser than enwiki in the use of inline citations). The hewiki existed prior to pay work (since 2008), however the two paid editors (there) significantly expanded it. The piece itself is a bit PUFFERYish, and is over detailed perhaps in some respects - but it isn't terribly bad. The budgeting committee of the Council for Higher Education in Israel is a pretty significant body. Icewhiz (talk) 13:21, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at this. If it's mainly a translation from Hebrew Wikipedia, then it needs to be attributed as such per WP:TRANSLATE and WP:TFOLWP; otherwise, it technically can be deleted as a copyvio. The creator has just been blocked as a sock puppet, so he/she is not going to be able to add the required attribution. Basically, Template:Translated page needs to be added to the article's talk page, but you need to be able to read the original source article to fill in the template's parameters. Do you think you can do that? -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:40, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
In this case particular there isn't a copyvio issue as the editor on hewiki and enwiki are the same person (this is the combined diff of Ovedc/ויקימנטור's work on hewiki on this article - they pretty much re-wrote/expanded the whole thing save for three sentences. When copying/translating one's own work one doesn't have to (though it is good practice) to attribute. I did however add the translate template - diff. In articles I've done cross-wiki (though usually English->Hebrew, I will note that the Hebrew translate notice is more important as hewiki allows translated articles that do not verify sources (based on the verification of the source wiki)) - e.g. Loitering munition (a funny one - started out identical, but other editors pulled it in different directions in both wikis (I'm still the prime author in both, but comments on talk / objections /etc were different - and this from shortly after creation) - and the English (GA) and Hebrew are now quite different) or Incendiary balloon I did not place a translated noticed as I "took full responsibility" for contents in both languages (including for all sources, etc.). Coexistence in Israel article - redundant?

Anyone from the project want to have a look at the new stub Coexistence in Israel and consider whether it is duplicative of existing material? Thanks, that looks as if it should be able to host everything on that angle. Redirected. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 01:37, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
  • @Elmidae:, @ShimonChai: - I disagree with that redirect (there might be a different one possible - not sure) - as Coexistence in Israel refers only to coexistence in Israeli itself - between the Jewish majority and Arab minority citizens. It is a notable topic in and of itself (with many organizations trying to foster relations) - and is distinct from various regional initiatives or co-existence with Palestinians who are not citizens of Israel. Icewhiz (talk) 14:04, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
Does sound like a suitable sub-topic to me; also based on what was in the stub, the material did not seem so expansive as to require an article of its own. However, if you think that chances are it will not get stuck at two sentences of generalities and mention of two organizations, feel free to reinstate. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 15:04, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Talk:1947–1949_Palestine_war#Vote (after reading Talk:1947–1949 Palestine war/Name)

In short, for more there a decade there is a problem with the titles of three articles: 1947–1949 Palestine war, 1947–1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine and 1948 Arab–Israeli War.
It was agreed that there is a need for a common prefix for these three articles, and a neutral title should be chosen. Before casting a vote, you are encouraged to donate 10 minutes of your time and read Talk:1947–1949 Palestine war/Name to understand the background of this long discussion. Thanks.--Bolter21 (talk to me) 16:06, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

The voting table has now got traction, with 10 participants. I am hopeful that with a few more, we can find a resolution to this decade-old discussion.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Demjanjuk trial and Yoram Sheftel

Hi all. I just want to preface this by saying that I'm pretty new to editing Wikipedia, and I am also not Jewish and I don't know much about Israeli culture or media - so I am posting out of random curiosity/interest as I don't have any knowledge to actually contribute to this WikiProject. Anyway, Netflix has just released their 5 part documentary miniseries "The Devil Next Door" on the trial of John Demjanjuk in Jerusalem the 1980s. From what I have been reading on twitter, a lot of people around the world are learning about this case for the first time through this docu-series. One of the people who gets the most screen time is Demjanjuk's Israeli defence lawyer, Yoram Sheftel. I have noticed that Sheftel does not have his own English language Wikipedia page, which seems odd because he definitely meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. In the documentary, he relishes in being 'the most hated person in Israel' at the time. A quick google has shown that he has continued to take really controversial cases throughout the years and that he regularly makes inflammatory/controversial statements on his radio show (apparently he was suspended from the radio just a few days ago?). Lots of people (such as myself) are going to look up his name after watching the Netflix series. I think he definitely needs his own article ASAP because this doco is going to drive a lot of traffic towards pages related to the Demjanjuk trial. But like I said, I don't have any knowledge or authority in this area, so I just wanted to throw this suggestion out to you all Apriljennifer (talk) 20:25, 9 November 2019 (UTC).

Need someone who can search in Hebrew

I just saw that there was a deletion discussion for an actor by the name of Guy Loel. It looks like he's really only acted in Hebrew language productions and shows, so I doubt that there will be much coverage in English about him. His IMDb profile shows that he's had a lot of roles in various TV shows and over multiple episodes, so I didn't know if there was anyone here who would be willing to do a search for Hebrew language sourcing. I'll try to do what I can, but I don't really have the ability to search in Hebrew since I'm not familiar with the language. RfC about Eli Cohen

There is an RfC about the inclusion of comments about Eli Cohen (brought on by the recent Netflix series about him) here: Talk:Eli_Cohen#RfC 22:51, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

Is this short description biased?

This description was recently added. I tried to change it to this, which I feel is neutral and matches the article itself, but it got quickly reverted. WarKosign 22:22, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

If you were aiming for neutral, you should not have gone for the absolute other end of the spectrum. Try finding a compromise. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:24, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
This is still Wikipedia, not "Israelipedia". We should go by what the International community thinks, not by what the Israeli government thinks, Huldra (talk) 23:54, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
"International community" in this case is the UN, which is a biased political body. Wikipedia is supposed to represent "the sum of all human knowledge", not opinion of a specific political body - even one as influential as the UN. WarKosign 07:33, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Propose "Israeli settlement in southern East Jerusalem", which takes a bit from each. Zerotalk 02:57, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Whether this is an Israeli settlement is a matter of opinion. Regardless of its political status and legality I don't think anyone can dispute that this is a neighborhood and is located in southern East Jerusalem. WarKosign 07:33, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
I'm the culprit here, where necessary, I changed the short descriptions for the so called "Ring neighborhoods" to match the sd that all other Israeli settlements have. In each case it says in the lead that that is what the place is. Gilo already had that short description.Pisgat Ze'ev has sd "Israeli settlement in the occupied Palestinian West Bank"Selfstudier (talk) 10:39, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Philosophy of human settlements and how they make other humans feel. Talpiot is a neighborhood. If you stand in Talpiot, you could say that it "constitutes" as an illegal Israeli settlement. You could say that Talpiot is not in "recognized" Israeli territory or to say that it was "illegally" constructed. But Talpiot looks, acts and feels simply like a neighborhood in Jerusalem. The term "settlement" first and foremost refers to a human settlement. A neighborhood is part of a city, the latter being a type of settlement. I guess that would mean that a neighborhood is also a settlement. But the term "Israeli Settlement" refers specifically to Israeli settlements that were built in the West Bank after 1967. Now, East Jerusalem neighborhoods clearly constitute as Israeli settlements, because they are some type of a human settlement, built by the Israeli people, outside of the Green Line, after 1967. With that said, in practice, they are neighborhoods in the city of Jerusalem no matter what people 'think' or what is the people's 'opinion' about the whole topic. Therefore, I think that WarKosign's description is sufficient. Someone who reads about Talpiot knows already the legal situation, thanks to the lead section. And people with a bit of common sense would spot that it doesn't say "Jerusalem" but say "East Jerusalem". An innocently, ignorant reader, with a very low sense of curiosity but enough ambition to read for five whole minutes, would be able to understand that Talpiot is a neighborhood in East Jerusalem, regarded by the international community as an illegal Israeli settlement, which is obviously the least interesting thing about Talpiot. Most of the people who read about Talpiot are not random readers from an Igloo who never heard about the place and came across the name by accident. These are people who know a thing or two about Israel, Palestine, and Jerusalem, and probably wish to learn more about one of the three. So putting "Israeli Settlements" after every five words in these articles, their infoboxes, their categories, their wiki links, their "see also" sections and now their short description, as if they are fresh Golan Heights wine bottles marked by the EU, is both unnecessary and annoying. For Israeli or Jewish readers, this is unpleasant, as if it implies a secret or clear hostile POV of Wikipedia, that not only it favors the International opinion (which makes sense, even though it is also a Palestinian POV) but it also shoves it up in your face as if Wikipedia was Muhammad Ali and "Israeli Settlements" were his fists. I think we can all say that pro-Israeli editors have unhappily accepted the reality in which people who murder babies in their beds are labeled as "assailants" by Wikipedia, in order to preserve NPOV or something like that, which is quite upsetting (no one dares saying anything about 9/11), so can you at least, not degrade anything related to our land our place of inhabitance which we have built and developed for years, as illegal under international law?

Long story short, I give no damn about the actual dispute. This is Wikipedia, and it feels like Wikipedia is repeating "Israeli settlement" too much, when it is clear enough already, and frankly shifts readers from the actual topics of the articles, and also disappoint many of the Israeli and Jewish readers who simply want to read about what they honestly think are neighborhoods in their country, when there is already enough information about their legal status. Go with WarKosign's description, it is factual, neutral and deals more with the actual topic in hand.--Bolter21 (talk to me) 20:23, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Just see how many times the article deals with its legal status, isn't it enough?--Bolter21 (talk to me) 20:33, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Good grief, Bolter, have you any idea as to how you sound? Israel confiscated land from the Palestinian owners to construct a settlement for its Jewish/Israeli citizen...and now it is "unpleasant" to be reminded of the fact? Yeah, we get it. (Have you ever though about how the Palestinian owners feel?) (Btw, I assume you mean East Talpiot, not Talpiot) Huldra (talk) 21:53, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Yeah Yeah haven't touched the English Wiki for a while I've forgotten the tone here. Anyway as I've said, I support either the current description (neighborhood and Israeli settlement) or WarKosign's description.--Bolter21 (talk to me) 22:01, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
The idea that a minority opinion should replace a super-majority one because of how it feels to you to stand in Talpiot or any other settlement is a non-starter. The short description can include both if you insist, but it must include settlement, because as you note that features prominently in the coverage of Talpiot and as a result in our article. There are lots of things that are unpleasant to Palestinian readers, or hell to me, and you know what? That doesnt mean squat. We have requirements for content here, WP:NPOV chief among them, and any argument based on how something feels to you or anybody else likewise does not mean squat. The topic at hand is a literal war crime, I am sorry if that makes you uncomfortable. But this is an encyclopedia, not a therapist's couch. nableezy - 20:48, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Ok I realize this might just be a long discussion not about the topic in hand (blame's on me) so let's focus on the issue. I think WarKosign's description is sufficient on the merit of the fact it says "East Jerusalem". If we can't have a consensus for that, I would push that the order would be "...is a Jewish neighborhood...in...East Jerusalem". This could be "Jewish neighborhood and Israeli settlement" or "neighborhood and Israeli settlement" but first it should be labeled as a neighborhood because that's what it is.--Bolter21 (talk to me) 20:58, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Im generally fine with neighborhood and Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem (which is what it says now, with the addition of settlementsouthern), for the EJ settlements and only the EJ settlements. The ones in the WB and not in EJ are almost uniformly referred to as settlements so that is what the primary description should be. nableezy - 21:20, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

This discussion is only new in the sd context, it has been had before. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Centralized_discussion/Jewish_Neighborhoods_versus_Settlements_of_Jerusalem Why Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem should be treated any differently to the rest of them is beyond me.Selfstudier (talk) 22:12, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

We are supposed to reflect the balance of sources here, not determine what that balance should be. It is a fact that sources refer to the so called Ring Neighborhoods as both neighborhoods and as settlements. So we have to reflect that balance. That balance is much more skewed in the case of both the West Bank (minus EJ) and the Golan settlements, so we likewise reflect that balance. Our goal here is to reflect the sources, not determine which are right. nableezy - 22:31, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
So the consensus is "neighborhood and Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem" for settlements in East Jerusalem that are "Ring neighborhoods"? Selfstudier (talk) 10:33, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
I can live with this. WarKosign 10:59, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
likewise fine with it. nableezy - 15:53, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

The section Aftermath contains this false conclusion:

Files released by the IDF in 2011 contradict the official Israeli narrative, which claimed that the operation was carried out in retaliation for the bus incident.

Just because operations are planned ahead in no way contradicts nor precludes that incidents occurring later on may serve as their trigger. Indeed, most military responses follow prior planning. IOW, it *was* carried out in retaliation of the bus incident, if that one hadn't occurred the same planned operation would simply have been triggered/in retaliation for yet another attack. Politics of Israel

The page Politics of Israel says that Politics in Israel is dominated by Zionist parties. It is a weird statement for the following reasons: Zionism is a movement for creation of a Jewish state. Israel has been created by UN in 1948 as a Jewish state. The current politics of Israel is not about discussing whether the state of Israel should exist as a Jewish state - it already does. It would be helpful if the topic of Politics of Israel was covering Israeli politics in context of Parliamentary Democracy - this would help users to put it in the right context. Smol3313 (talk) 16:43, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

I find the statement that "politics in Israel is dominated by Zionist parties" completely understandable. There are parties that are Zionist and there are those that are not (e.g. haredi parties). Well, Israeli politics is dominated by those parties that are Zionist. Debresser (talk) 18:10, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I wish to make editors aware of a discussion that is occurring on Wikimedia commons. Here is the link [4]. A creator has uploaded a barnstar with Nazi imagery that is intended to be awarded to editors who work on articles related to Nazism. Its not for articles - it is specifically intended for use on a userpage which the author makes clear here [5]. I feel this "award" is offensive in the extreme and its potential to be used as a personal attack or harassment is obvious regardless of the creators intentions. Please contribute to the discussion. Actually you are wrong on the chronology here. The editor made a change, which is discussed on his talkpage, but in the case of Gush Etzion the consensus version was in place before that editor's changes, and you and a few others are trying to impose your POV on a consensus version. Debresser (talk) 14:02, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
We should ban the use of "consensus version" as a code for "old version". Zerotalk 15:08, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
Most certainly not. WP:CONSENSUS is a policy on Wikipedia. Debresser (talk) 23:15, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
Read WP:CCC. If discussion shows that old text no longer enjoys consensus, then it is no longer the consensus version. Continuing to call it the consensus version at that stage is misleading. Zerotalk 02:14, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
Really no need to point me to all kinds of links. If the discussion would show this, then you would have a point. The discussion, however, is not showing this. Which is precisely what makes the POV pushing so disruptive. Debresser (talk) 12:09, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
The discussion actually shows that not using a POV title in that article in Wikipedia's voice enjoys much wider support than your position. Are Israeli sources reliable? This editor suggested no, in declining to publish an article

An editor has suggested Draft:StopAntisemitism.org that sources that are Israeli or Jewish newspapers are of questionable reliability. --2603:7000:2143:8500:7913:1C16:7EF2:49A9 (talk) 05:01, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

New political party stubs

@Rh0809 and David O. Johnson: Can I suggest that no articles on new minor political parties are created prior to the upcoming elections unless there is polling that suggests the party will win seats? Prior to the last few elections we had a rash of articles on no hopers like Liberal–Economic Power, New Liberal Party (2019 party), New Horizon (political party), Me and You - The Israeli People's Party etc. Likewise, I would suggest no articles should be created on alliances until they are 100% confirmed as competing and likely to win seats, to avoid another United Jewish Home. Number 57 18:45, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

I agree. I'll hold off on creating any alliance articles, per your reasoning. Thanks. David O. Johnson (talk) 18:50, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
I concure that not every party that exists should get an article, however, I believe that it is justified to create parties led by notable public figures who consistently make it on to polling data. This includes the parties of Shelah and Zelikha, but excludes the Freedom Party which was once known as Liberal-Economic Power. If we exclude parties that do not win seats, then why have an article on Otzma Yehudit. They are consistently below the threshold and do not come close to winning seats. Shelah and Zelikha, however, may indeed be in teh next knesset, with their parties joining either Huldai, Gantz, Lapid or someone else. Rh0809 (talk) 14:56, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
I haven't seen any polls where Shelah's party actually wins seats in a poll, though; that's the difference. Otzma has held seats in the Knesset before. David O. Johnson (talk) 20:35, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
(e/c) Otzma had two seats in the Knesset for some time and numerous polls showed it winning seats in the 2013 elections, so it would have still had an article. Number 57 20:40, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

So we ended up with two articles on parties that didn't even contest the election. I've redirected them both to the articles on their respective founders. Number 57 16:35, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

East Jerusalem

User:Supreme Deliciousness has been removing Israel-related categories from the articles Jehohanan, Large Stone Structure, and Shebna inscription, because these archaeological discoveries took place in East Jerusalem. I am under the impression that East Jerusalem has been annexed by Israel.

Anyone care to clarify whether East Jerusalem is within this project's scope? Dimadick (talk) 15:40, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

The international community does not recognize East Jerusalem as part of Israel. The area is disputed. Per npov we can therefor not make the claim that the area is "in Israel." Dimadick, please revert yourself at these three articles. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 15:51, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
For areas that have been formally annexed, I think it makes sense to have categories of both Israel and Palestine. For example, Crimea is categorised as both a region of Ukraine and Russia. In line with WP:BRD, Dimadick need not revert until consensus is reached. Number 57 15:57, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
I agree with your proposal, but it is actually Supreme Deliciousness who should stop reverting - he made the change to a longstanding version of the article, and it was reverted. The onus is on him to show consensus for his suggested change. Kenosha Forever (talk) 16:50, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
The longstanding consensus is that we do not describe occupied territories as part of Israel. The cats should follow that consensus. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 16:55, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
The longstanding consensus on that page is to have that category. If you want to change, start a discussion. Kenosha Forever (talk) 20:59, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Could you please show me the "longstanding consensus on that page is to have that category." ? Someone added a cat to a few fringe articles very few watches and its not noticed and it sits there because nobody noticed... how is that consensus? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 23:16, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Have you read WP:Consensus? "Consensus is a normal and usually implicit and invisible process across Wikipedia. Any edit that is not disputed or reverted by another editor can be assumed to have consensus. " Kenosha Forever (talk) 01:14, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
The edits to include "Archaeological discoveries in Israel" in the three articles is disputed by me.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 01:17, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
Those edits were in the article since their creation, nearly two years, and were not disputed, thus they have consensus. You are now, nearly two years later, coming in to dispute it, and so the next sentence of WP:Consensus then applies: "Should that edit later be revised by another editor without dispute, it can be assumed that a new consensus has been reached. ". But your later change has been disputed, almost immediately, thus we can't assume it has consensus. You need to show that there's a consensus for your new version, and you haven't done so. Them's the rules. Kenosha Forever (talk) 02:04, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
They were not disputed at that point of time because they were not seen. Now they are seen and they are disputed. The cats never had consensus. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 12:10, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
When did this "formal annexation" occur?Selfstudier (talk) 16:35, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation
Jordanian annexation of the West Bank
Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem

Selfstudier (talk) 17:28, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Compromise: I suggest a compromise, to create a new category: "Archaeological discoveries in Jerusalem" and then to have Israel and Palestine cats within it. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 12:16, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

It's pointless, and inconsistent with your argument (if you argue that an article related to Jerusalem cannot be in an Israel category, why is it ok for a category related to Jerusalem be in an Israel category?). Just have the articles in both relevant national categories. Number 57 12:51, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
The reason why the cat "Archaeological discoveries in Israel" can not be in the articles is because they aren't in Israel. My suggestion was a compromise. Its not good, but a lesser evil of the two options.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 13:10, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
They are in Israel under Israeli law, and it's not clear why having the article in a category that is still in an 'in Israel' category is the lesser of the two evils. This just seems to be about making a point rather than anything constructive. Number 57 13:20, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
The international community does not recognize this Israeli proclaimed law. Why should Wikipedia follow Israeli view instead of the world view? How is that npov? My suggestion cat is not "in Israel", its "in Jerusalem", There could be a sentence inside the cat saying that Israel occupies the city and has declared it as its capital but its internationally unrecognized. The Israel and Palestinian cats would then be placed inside the "Archaeological discoveries in Jerusalem" cat.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 14:03, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
Likewise, the international community does not recognise the Russian occupation of Crimea. Including both categories is the simplest solution to dealing with this issue and this really shouldn't be a big deal. Number 57 14:46, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with the Crimea dispute but different disputes have different solutions. What might be a good solution there might not be good in this case. For example, going by your argument, then we should also have Palestinian category's in city's like Haifa and Nazareth because there are Palestinian organizations that claim the entire area as Palestine and the entire area is infact disputed. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 16:06, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
This is a bit ridiculous (although I suppose this is where you end up if you're basically just on WP to push a POV). Claiming territory is clearly different to having control of and annexing it. Number 57 18:23, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Do you remember saying this? "It would be best to be able to leave this field blank for Israeli settlements, as (is the case of ones in the West Bank), they aren't really in any country." A POV pusher calling someone else a POV pusher, that's rich.Selfstudier (talk) 18:43, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
We're not talking about the West Bank, we're talking about East Jerusalem. Number 57 19:15, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
QED.Selfstudier (talk) 19:24, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Someone is claiming the annexation occurred by way of Jerusalem Law ie in 1980, I looked at Jehohanan and it is discovery in 1968. So wrong even if the annexation were valid.Selfstudier (talk) 14:14, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
Ridiculous, that's not how these categories work, here, or elsewhere. The Gezer Calendar , for example, was discovered in 1908, but is correctly listed in the "Archaeological discoveries in Israel" category . Statue of Ebih-Il is correctly listed as discovered in Syria, even though its discovery predated the creation of that state by 10 years or more. You might want to thing through your logic here, because it would preclude virtually anything from being listed under the "Archaeological discoveries in Palestine" category. Kenosha Forever (talk) 17:34, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
No problem for finding things in Palestine Nur Masalha (2018). Palestine: A Four Thousand Year History. Zed. ISBN 978-1-78699-273-4. Bit difficult finding anything in Israel before 1948.Selfstudier (talk) 17:53, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
Nope. "Palestine" as country, exists at best from 1988. But again think though your logic - Jerusalem was the capital city of the Kingdom of Israel long before 1968.Kenosha Forever (talk) 17:59, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
Well...no, not even worth a reply.Selfstudier (talk) 18:01, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
"Jerusalem was the capital city of the Kingdom of Israel long before 1968." What? The capitals of the Kingdom of Israel were Shechem, Penuel, Tirzah, Samaria. Jerusalem was instead a capital of the Kingdom of Judah. Dimadick (talk) 23:50, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
Dimadick, It was also the capital of the United Monarchy - Kingdom_of_Israel_(united_monarchy), not that its status as capital is in any way relevant to this discussion. Kenosha Forever (talk) 01:39, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

New WikiProject Israel sub-page entitled WikiProject Israel/Books

To Whom it May Concern: We have just added another WikiProject Israel sub-page entitled Wikipedia:WikiProject Israel/Books, copyedited from an existing page Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine/Books, with minor changes, since the page primarily concerns books treating on the historical Land of Israel, from a historical-geographical perspective: i.e. its towns, villages, historical sites, archaeological sites, etc. before the founding of a political state in the mid-20th century. The page is meant to serve as a data-base for resource material related to the geography of the Land of Israel, as recorded by travelers, researchers, archaeologists, in the past few centuries. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has extensively made use of the research material provided by the British Survey of Western Palestine, their maps and general information of sites visited by them in the late 1800s. Any avid scholar of Jewish history, geography, and demographics of the country, should have these resources at his disposal. They are an important and invaluable source for editors working on articles related to the above fields.Davidbena (talk) 18:45, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

We need less bias updated info on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

There is a lot of biases against israel on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict which is to be expected from a very controversial subject such as this, but we need more concrete information on the history and hows they were both offered a state and that palestinians declined saying we want it all. I might also sound bias and I get that but I am hoping that I could work with a team from both sides to help edit and provide only facts and no opinions mixed in.

@Shuster123: we are working hard to do exactly that (provide only facts and no opinions mixed in). See Wikipedia:WikiProject Israel Palestine Collaboration. Wikipedia Wars on the Israel-Palestine Conflict

Hello Wikipedians!

I am writing my MA dissertation on Wikipedia and the Israel-Palestine conflict. I will be looking at the process of collaborative knowledge production on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the effect it has on bias in the articles. This will involve understanding the profiles and motivations of editors (that's you!), contention/controversy and dispute resolution in the talk pages, and bias in the final article.

If you are an active (or previously active) editor of pages related to the conflict, I would love to hear from you. I would greatly appreciate if you could take 5 minutes to fill out this quick survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdriEAkTQCq5Us26lxEqbjfw4jh3ktqTLaE8FN7fYY7Eph1Fw/viewform?usp=sf_link BEFORE 8 AUGUST 2021.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, and I am happy to share my findings with anyone who requests it :)

Thanks,

@Sm8900: Thanks for your reply. Does this also apply to the page I asked about below? MaskedSinger (talk) 20:33, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
Hi MaskedSinger,
Personally it seems to me like it might, but it should fit the criteria for inclusion on Wikipedia. The main criterion is verifiability, and second is notability – if a subject has non-trivial coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources, then it is generally considered notable and verifiable.
If you have multiple features whose subject is this specific website, then yes, it warrants its own page. This applies to any other subject, in general. Sometimes there can be exceptions in either direction (less coverage might still warrant an article, or more coverage might not), but these don't apply to subjects like the ones you asked about.
Ynhockey (Talk) 19:09, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
Draft of the page now submitted for review MaskedSinger (talk) 08:16, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

This was accepted at AFC, but I am concerned about its referencing. Were I able to read Hebrew I would be able to assess my concerns directly, but I have to use machine translation. It is a paid contribution by a self declared paid editor (allowed under the rules), but the referencing appears to be churnalism, and does not aid the article in passing WP:NCORP in a documented and referenced manner. That renders it vulnerable to a deletion process even though I am 90% sure the org passes WP:NCORP.

Would an editor who reads Hebrew please take on the cleanup of the article, even if that means reducing it to a stub and rebuilding it? FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 09:57, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Is there any specific claim or source that you're concerned about? WarKosign 19:26, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
@WarKosign Anything that even smells like a press release or churnalism. The article has a PR feel, and I am just not really competent to look at these refs in detail. It would benefit from the cite parameter that deals with translated isles, too. I think that is 'trans-title=' FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 19:54, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
@Timtrent: The few articles used as sources that I checked do feel like mainly based on press releases, but they are still articles at respectable news sites, so I guess they are valid sources we can't dismiss. We can't dismiss facts just because they came from a PR release. WarKosign 22:15, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
@WarKosign We cannot dismiss facts, no, but a press release does not add any value to passing NCORP. A press release is a primary source and/or a self published source, so carries zero weight. Respectable sources also carry press releases. Thus a press release prevents that source in a particular case from being independent of the subject, even if it is reliable, whereas a well constructed piece of journalism in the same source is reliable, independent and, assuming it is significant coverage, is useful for establishing notability
This article is also a paid placement (declared by the creating editor), thus is worthy of a stringent examination.
Where it is a press release, {{primary source inline}} is an ideal template to place following the closing </ref> tag. Editors will then find it easier to examine the article for compliance with policy.
I think the org is notable (0.95 probability), but it also needs to be proven to be. I fear it was accepted at AFC prior to that proof being provided. FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 22:33, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
While many sources do smell of PR packets (see "add details" here), there are enough sources that do not mainly provide a positive spin. For example, this story about them being sued for alleged patent infringement can't be good for their image. WarKosign 23:06, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Requesting help in confirming my draft

Hi there, my draft page Draft:Roy Schwartz Tichon was declined due to lack of sources. As such, I worked hard on it and I believe it know fits Wikipedia criteria. It's about a month now and I put a lot of effort in it, and so I'd be glad if someone spare a time to check it. --Amir Segev Sarusi (talk) 10:23, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Consider pivoting your article so it deals with the public transportation initiative and not the person behind it. Bulk of the article already deals with it, and it's much easier to prove notability. With all due respect to Roy, who really cares where he went to high school? WarKosign 11:01, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
If you feel it's not necessary feel free to delete it. I just wrote it like a standard article of other biographies (and Roy's Hebrew wiki original article). I put a lot of effort in it and I do not think it deserves to stay in the draft space. I want to go on to other articles. Thank you for your quick reply. --Amir Segev Sarusi (talk) 12:57, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
It does look like it's in considerably good shape. I personally think it looks like a good article. But then again I'm not an expert. Dunutubble (talk) 17:52, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

At Talk:Yarkon Park, we are attempting to determine the date the park was opened.

The park's website says:"Planning of the park began in 1969, and it was opened to the public in 1973."

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Bad transliterations of Hebrew names to Arabic in Jewish towns

Hello everyone!!! I am posting here at User:Loew Galitz's prompting. In several Jewish towns, there are badly mangled Arabic transliterations of the Hebrew names. For example Or Yehuda or Kiryat Haim. Some are tagged with "romanization needed", but there is no romanization because it the same name as Hebrew with a letter to letter mapping. For example Or Yehuda is rendered as "أور يهوده" in Arabic. This amount to a letter-to-letter conversion, but has nothing to do with the underlying language. Or, light, is in Arabic nur نور. But the name that is used is أور with an Alef. The is a simple mapping of א to أ, then ו to و, and ר to ر. Same with יהודה (Yehuda) that is mapped letter-letter to يهوده, but Arabic has its own way of writing Judah and Judas, and it is يهوذا, ending with an alif and not ha: Arabic Wikipedia of Judah (son of Jacob).

Logo
Welcome sign, no Arabic

Taking or Yehuda further, there is no Arabic on the town's website, logo, or welcome sign. The CBS doesn't have Arab residents in the town, it is a Jewish town. There is little to no Arabic in the city.

Arabic does have a special status in Israel, but it only has effect in Arabic or mixed zones, not in towns without Arabs.

I propose that these not good Arabic transliterations be removed from towns without Arab population or Arab ties. It is one matter when a town has an Arab name, like Lod: اللد derives from the same place, but is not a letter to letter mapping of לוד. But there is no purpose in forcing what might appear on an Arabic road map.חוקרת (Researcher) (talk) 05:33, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

Sounds reasonable. If there is no source for an Arabic name of a place, then there is probably no cultural or historical reason to include it. If there is a reason to include the Arabic name, then there must be a source that supports this reason - and also provides the proper spelling. WarKosign 07:08, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
@חוקרת: the CBS says there are 62 Arabs living in Or Yehuda. Onceinawhile (talk) 16:53, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
Does this source say that these Israeli Arabs write "Or Yehuda" in Arabic? Does it say how they spell it? Otherwise, ethnicity of the residents of the city is irrelevant. WarKosign 18:44, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
I was simply checking (and then correcting) the comment above: The CBS doesn't have Arab residents in the town, it is a Jewish town. There is little to no Arabic in the city. It is reasonable to presume that the Arab residents of the city have an Arabic name for the place that they live. We would need a source for it of course. Onceinawhile (talk) 20:32, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
See here the Israeli National Insurance website in Arabic for Or Yehuda: https://www.btl.gov.il/Arabic%20HomePage/snifim/Pages/OrYehuda.aspx
Onceinawhile (talk) 20:40, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
The Arab spelling of Or Yehuda on this page says "أور يهودا", compared to "أور يهوده" on the Or Yehuda article. With my (extremely limited) knowlege of the Arabic alphabet, I think it's a difference between "Or Yehuda" and "Or Yehudah".
I do not think it's reasonable at all to presume that Arab residents have a different name for a city. Does an Arab resident of, say, New York have a different name for it? Having a different name for a city in different languages is an exception and not a rule, this does happen of course, but mostly for important and ancient cities that had a chance to become a part of a culture. For most of the cities they use the only name the city has, only transliterating it to Arabic. What is the value for the reader of the English Wikipedia to know how this name is transcribed to a language not native to it? WarKosign 21:35, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
I didn’t say a different name, I just meant one in Arabic script. I don’t understand your last sentence at all – who is not native to what? Maybe better not to answer – Bolter’s post below gets to the heart of this. Onceinawhile (talk) 21:43, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
If the word "native" offends you, let's call it "original". Arabic is not the language in which Or Yehuda was originally named, and there doesn't seem to be a distinct Arabic name significatly different from Hebrew. WarKosign 22:09, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
I believe the original names for this area were Kafr 'Ana and Saqiya.
I don’t understand the argument that the Hebrew is somehow more educational to our English readers vs the Arabic. Our English readers can’t read either one. We are simply giving the official versions of the name, and the evidence suggests this location has both an official Hebrew and and official Arabic name. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:22, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
Original name of the place was Ono. However, I meant original name of the modern town. My point is that this locatations (and many others) don't have an "Arabic" or "Hebrew" name - they have a signle name that originates from one language (depending on the history of the location) and that is the name that should be transcribed to English for this wikipedia. There is no "second" name that is less educational that the first one, there is only one name that can be transcribed to English directly, or with lowered fidelity via an intermediate step of another language. WarKosign 05:05, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
62 Arab residents, probably temporary students or fully assimilated Hebrew speaking Arabs as there are no Arabic language schools in Or Yehuda to teach Arab kids Arabics, are still only '0.16% that is still virtually nothing. There are larger populations of Russian speakers, French speakers, Ethiopian Jews who speak Amharic and Tigrinya, and foreign Thai, Sudanese, Eritrean, and other nationality workers. The national insurance site has Arabic, Russian, English, French, and Amharic versions available, do you want to place Russian, French, and Amharic transliterations as well? חוקרת (Researcher) (talk) 05:54, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Original issue

The above is a valid discussion, but my point was that an English reader has no idea whether the arabic writing is a transliteration from hebrew or natural arabic name. Therefore I requested that there must be always a romanization from arabic. There is no such thing as "there is no romanization" The best you can say "we don't have reliable sources that provide romanization". In the case of Or Yehuda one may write "(transliterated from Hebrew)" or "there is no Native Arabic name for the place". Loew Galitz (talk) 16:41, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

What's the point in romanization of a bad transliteration? WarKosign 18:44, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

Few notes on what has been written above. First of all, Israel, at least until recently (can't really tell anymore), had Arabic as an official language. Whether there are Arab citizens in Israel towns or not, does not change the fact that Or Yehuda does have an Arabic transliterated name on road signs. I see no problem with the fact that the Arabic name is a complete transliteration of the Hebrew one. Nobody calls the village of Jisr az-Zarqa as "The Blue Bridge" or הגשר הכחול. Hebrew speakers know this place by its Arabic name. Now, even if no Arabs live in Or Yehuda, which as Oncenawhile has pointed out, is false, still there are Arabs who work at Or Yehuda or visit it for all sort of occasions. If you go to Israel's National Insurance website in Arabic, you will have a page dedicated to Or Yehuda using the Arabic transliteration which is not bad. An Arab going to Or Yehuda wouldn't tell the cab driver "please drive me to Nur al-Yahuda". As for the tag, you may remove it and change "Arabic" to "Arabic transliteration" if it is the case, unlike places with actual Arabic names such as Lod or Nazareth. Going by the ethnicity of the residents would probably force us to give the Russian transliteration of Bat Yam, which is an idea I personally find interesting, but I'll keep it with English-Hebrew-Arabic names. Thanks, a resident of Spring Mound (:--Bolter21 (talk to me) 20:58, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

What is the point in transliterating to English an Arab transliteration of a Hebrew name (or Hebrew transliteration of an Arab name)? It's just a telephone game. If the city has different (even if similar) names in the two languages it makes sense, but otherwise - I don't see the point. WarKosign 21:47, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
You don't see the point because you didn't comprehend my opening statement. I don't care about Arabs and Jews (and Druzes) of Israel riding cab to Nof haGalil or to Ne'ot Hovav. The point is that this is the English-language wikipedia, and an English reader does not have a freaking idea what the heck تلال أبوبكا means and how it sounds. Do you? While one may reasonably expect that the Hebrew spelling reasonably matches the English-language title of the article for an Israeli place, there is no such expectation for an Arabic spelling, because we know that many places in Israel have both Hebrew and Arabic names, sometimes completely different, sometimes literal translations, sometimes slight modifications, sometimes translit. And as a "linguistic freak" I would like to know which is the case. Loew Galitz (talk) 02:30, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
If Arabic spelling sounds significantly different - there is value in giving the alternative name. My question, however was - what is the point of transcribing a Hebrew city name to English both directly and also via Arabic (and vice versa)? You'll just get two nearly identical transliterations, different only due to phonetics of each language. WarKosign 05:05, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Bolter21 is incorrect to say that Or Yehuda has Arabic signs of any significant number, the large majority of signs in Or Yehuda are bilingual in Hebrew top and English below, followed by monolingual Hebrew signs. The trilingual sign he points out is the National Roads Company of Israel sign, a national level sign on roads designated as part of the national system. The National Road company's transliterations have been ridiculed in https://www.haaretz.co.il/misc/1.1151743 as an example. The current road authority system is listed here https://www.gov.il/he/departments/general/names_destinations_training_signage and it is not a good transliteration, but instead a simplified transliteration for road signs, with the goal of rendering the shortest name possible for fast reading, for example the road authority transliteration avoids double letters. The value of the road authority transliteration is low, it is not a real name, but just a way to read the road sign in non-Hebrew letters. There are significantly more Russian speakers in Jewish towns than Arabs, adding Russian transliterations would be more justifiable than Arabic in this locations, but it just isn't needed on the English Wikipedia. חוקרת (Researcher) (talk) 06:08, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
There isn't any justification in adding Russian transliteration either. Transcribing the Russian spelling of Hod HaSharon to English would result in "Khod KhaSharon", "Chod ChaSharon" or "God GaSharon" since Russian doesn't have a direct equivalent for He (letter) while English lacks a direct equivalent for Kha (Cyrillic). What is the value of this, except deminstrating quirks of languages which are unrelated to the actuall city name? WarKosign 08:54, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Original issue, take 2

Oy vey, gevalt! This shmuesn starts reminding me both kahal in Kasrilevka, as described by my grandfather, and a neoZionist congress in On Venus, Have We Got a Rabbi!.

Let me start all over: This is English Wikipedia. An English reader may have a valid interest in knowing what تلال أبوبكا means and how it sounds. Solution for the benefit of the English-speaking readers (not Russian, not Urdu, not Mbeclick2lengclick1bebwe speakers):

  • (A) Give a Romanization, if it differs from Hebrew (e.g. Sha'ar HaGai vs. Bab al-Wad).
  • (B) Mention that it is a transliteration from Hebrew (or an approximate transliteration therefrom) (e.g. Or Yehuda)
  • (C) Mention that Hebrew is a transliteration from Arabic.
  • (D) If the issue is more complex that, give details in the "Etymology" section.

PLEASE do not sidetrack and answer two questions:

  • (Q1) Is my concern valid?
  • (Q2) Is my solution good? If not, explain drawbacks and suggest a better solution.

If you want to discuss something else (which languages to mention, requirement of references, etc.), please do this in a separate section. Do I really need to start an RFC for such a simple question? Loew Galitz (talk) 16:39, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

A: I agree
B,C: What's the point in having this transliteration at all?
D: I agree
Q1: Yes
Q2: Yes, see my reservations above. WarKosign 18:37, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Ah, I see misunderstanding now: B,C : I didnt require translit here, only an indication that they are the same. Because due to imperfection of Wikipedia there is no way to tell whether they are the same or a Wikipedian was sloppy and didn't give a translit. Loew Galitz (talk) 19:33, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Really, Apopka, Florida in Arabic? My answers:
A. I agree
B, if the Arabic is only a road sign transliteration and not a real name then it should be omitted, because it doesn't interest the reader. If it is included for a bizarre reason, then it should be noted it is a transliteration.
C. The Hebrew official name should always be present in Israel, because it is official and exists in many sources. If the Hebrew name is a mere transliteration of the Arabic, then it should be noted it is just a transliteration. There are much fewer localities in Israel that are mere transliteration of the Arabic name, this only happens for new Arab settlements that don't have ancient history and an associated historic Jewish name.
D. I agree if there are sources.
Q1. Yes, I agree that Arabic transliterations copied from road signs without any note on their provenance being a simplified transliteration of the Hebrew name are of no value to an English reader and are illegible without an explanation.
Q2. I generally agree, commented reservations above. חוקרת (Researcher) (talk) 19:17, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Yes, Apopka is a good example, isn't it? :-) Because you cannot tell Apopka from Abubka written in Arabic script, and the place is called Apopka, not Abubka, and the difference is simply due to the deficiency of Arabic translit. Jokes aside, I did have troublles when reasearching Hebrew bios I wrote, such as Naomi Henrik or Mordechai Kikayon, because I have to "forward-guess" possible transliterations of the names from Hebrew into English, because of non-typical names. Loew Galitz (talk) 19:33, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Considering the opposite situation

If we remove the Arabic name from Or Yehuda, then we should remove the Hebrew name from Umm al-Fahm. Agreed? Onceinawhile (talk) 10:05, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Agreed. As I was arguing above, since there is no different name for the city in Hebrew, adding English transcription of a Hebrew transcription of an Arabic city name is completely pointless. Name in several languages makes sense only if there are differences that are not only due to limitations of each writing system. For example, Lod has different (albeit related) names in Hebrew, Arabic and Latin, so including them serves a purpose. WarKosign 10:43, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
No, it is not the same, as Hebrew is the official language of Umm al-Fahm. Stree signs in Umm al-Fahm have Hebrew on them. חוקרת (Researcher) (talk) 14:08, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
I won't object to keeping the Hebew name, but don't see what's the value in having the name in "the official language" for the reader of the English Wikipedia. WarKosign 14:49, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Because it is in Israel. All official documents in Israel are in Hebrew. Media is in Hebrew. If you want to find sources on the town, the Hebrew name is important. For Arab town the Arabic name helps too in finding material, but a significant corpus of knowledge is in Hebrew. חוקרת (Researcher) (talk) 15:00, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
I know get what the people are saying here, and think it would make sense to remove the Arabic transliteration from Or Yehuda. I still think that at least all Israeli cities should be presented in a trilingual form with the bad transliterations simply because these are the formal languages of Israel, but I guess it is up to Israel to decide to commit to its trilingual policy and not us here in the English Wikipeida. This is a tough one. While the trilingual nature of Israel can be debated, it would make absolutely no sense to remove Hebrew names from any Israeli locality cause that's the language of the land. Maybe I personally get to attached to these names (unlike WarKosign who shares my place of living) but I suspect many of the readers on articles such as Or Yehuda, one of the most insignificant towns in the world, do know how to read Hebrew letters. Since all three languages don't share a single alphabet, I think it has a certain value to see how it is written in another language, and also there's a value in seeing that it is pronounced exactly the same. I don't know why, but it feels right to see Cyrillic names on towns in Serbia such as Ada even though I can't read a single word in Cyrillic. It provides a certain tone to the town, that this is how people driving to Ада perceive it. So no, writing the Russian name of Bat Yam was a joke, but I think it least the most consistent and stable (though obviously not perfect) way is to go by national road signs.--Bolter21 (talk to me) 19:17, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Arguing against myself: if an English speaker (someone with English set as their default language in the browser) googles Arabic spelling of Or Yehuda, they would probably find the English wikipedia artcile helpful, and for that to work the page has to include the Arabic spelling of the name. So perhaps it is useful to include spelling of city names in both Hebrew and Arabic. I still don't think there is any value in repeating English transcription if it's not significantly different. WarKosign 06:54, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Given that it isn't clearly marked on the major pages on the topic, we could use more editors giving comments and feedback for this new page. — LlywelynII 22:59, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Does the term Al-Aqsa Mosque need disambiguation?

Al Aqsa Mosque (the large compound) vs Al Aqsa Mosque (the small southern building, from where prayers are led)
300,000 worshippers at the Al Aqsa Mosque (the large compound), facing the Al Aqsa Mosque (the small southern building, from where prayers are led)

Please comment at Talk:Al-Aqsa Mosque#Requested move 30 May 2022 - we are in need of editors who have the time to review the sources. Our Al-Aqsa Mosque article is about the small building. The large compound, also known as Al-Aqsa Mosque, is our article Temple Mount.

For reference:

  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) is the third holiest site in Islam
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) was the first qibla in Islam
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) gave its name to the Al Aqsa Intifada, and the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) can hold over 300,000 people (note: the small building can hold only 5,000)
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) was recently in the news after clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians: the location of the route is shown here
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (building) is an important monument of early Islamic architecture
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (building) houses the Imam of the Al Aqsa Mosque
  • Al Aqsa Mosque (building) is where the Islamic prayers are led from

Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, what matters most is whether it is highly likely — much more likely than any other single topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined — to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term. It is also important to assess how the term is used amongst scholarly sources - an assessment of this has been provided at the discussion, and it would be good to have it confirmed by editors who have the time to review the sources themselves.

Would anyone be interested in a sub-page of this project that will use Hebrew for discussion? Or maybe a Hebrew Wikipedia page associated with our project?

Attack on Israeli editors

User:Onceinawhile reported three Israeli Wikipedia editors as sock puppets. I suggest we examine here Onceinawhile's edits, discuss how to prevent future attacks, and what steps to take here now.Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 05:43, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

@חוקרת: Ah right, because singling out an editor for raising an SPI, before its conclusion, and calling it an attack ... is not an attack? Interesting view. @Once. Iskandar323 (talk) 06:30, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Onceinawhile's baseless allegations against Hebrew Wikipedia editors is an attack.Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 06:33, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Two points 1)This forum is not the place for this 2)The statement I suggest we examine here Onceinawhile's edits, discuss how to prevent future attacks, and what steps to take here now sounds to me like something that ought to be reported. Selfstudier (talk) 08:08, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Israeli editors were attacked for being Israeli, their Israeli status was the basis of this horrible sockpuppet report. This Israel WikiProject is the most relevant forum on the English Wikipedia, though I might open a discussion up on the Hebrew Wikipedia if anyone has a good suggestion for a page there. There is good cause to examine Onceinawhile's other recent edits.Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 08:15, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
WP:ASPERSIONS, I suggest you refrain from making any further such. Selfstudier (talk) 08:26, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
That report, was ASPERSIONS, and was based on "timecards suggestive of the Israel timezone".Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 08:30, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
I refer you to my previous comment. Selfstudier (talk) 08:33, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
@חוקרת: Incidentally, none of these three editors declare themselves to be Israeli on their user pages, so either you are yourself casting aspersions about all of the editors involved, or you know this for sure, either because they have told you that they are so, or, at worse, you are yourself outing them, which would be yet another problematic behavior on your part. Iskandar323 (talk) 08:49, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Look at the Hebrew Wikipedia homepages, where these are longtime editors.[6][7]Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 08:54, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
That's two ... and Tombah? are you just casually lumping them in with the other two? My point is you also shouldn't be jumping to conclusions. Iskandar323 (talk) 09:00, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

@Iskandar323, check again. It is concluded. Tombah (talk) 06:33, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

@Tombah: It wasn't at the time that this thread was opened, and, as Self notes, the broader concern here is that plotting to stalk another editor is problematic. Iskandar323 (talk) 08:42, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
These are points that stand regardless of the merits of the SPI case, i.e.: matters of general principle, regardless or how well merited (or not) that filing was. Iskandar323 (talk) 08:44, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Please explain. This is too vague. Tombah (talk) 08:45, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
"Plotting"?? Are you suggesting a conspiracy here on WikiProject Israel? I posted out here in the open, for a public discussion among Israeli editors on Wikipedia on what to do about this kind of baseless attack on Israeli editors. We are allowed to discuss further steps.Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 08:48, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
@חוקרת: What is "I suggest we examine here Onceinawhile's edits" if not suggesting of an organised activity - here specifically in pursuit of another editor? Iskandar323 (talk) 08:50, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Do you have anything to say about the now concluded SPI? I'm curious, and I'm listening. Tombah (talk) 08:54, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
It's somewhat off-topic, but I personally don't think you're a sock and would not have pursued an SPI based on that level of evidence. Iskandar323 (talk) 08:57, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Off-topic? I don't think so. The purpose of this discussion was to address this issue. How can it be that I feel persecuted all the time here? It's now obvious that there's a reason for my feelings. I'd like to hear your take on this. Tombah (talk) 09:05, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
@Tombah: I would say that things like this, cases of various types, happen to all of us at one time or another. You just have to develop a thick skin I'm afraid, and just focus on continuing with the kind of editing you enjoy. If a certain topic is stressing you out, just can always take a break, or step back from disputes. Iskandar323 (talk) 09:18, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
A transgression was made, that is a good reason for checking. I suggesting that this WikiProject discuss the potential for a check of the edits.Researcher (Hebrew: חוקרת) (talk) 08:56, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
@חוקרת: I would say that you are on exceptionally thin ice here in a numbers of ways, and I would suggest that you rethink your approach. Iskandar323 (talk) 08:58, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
If anyone feels aggrieved about something the usual procedures apply, an editors talk page is the first port of call and then AE the logical follow up. Using this page as an attack page is a bad idea, it is not the correct place for dispute resolution. Selfstudier (talk) 09:22, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
חוקרת, there is no need for any discussion, public or otherwise, about another user. That would be a personal attack, which is prohibited. Drsmoo (talk) 13:19, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

I have nothing more to add to the SPI thread. I believe the involvement of the two low-[enwiki]edit-count users at the RM in such a short time-window was statistically impossible to be a coincidence. I had missed the fact that despite their low edit counts, these two editors are highly experienced on hewiki. The admin at the SPI said it seems to be off-wiki canvassing.

@Tombah, Eladkarmel, and Atbannett: please could you confirm for us here - did you have any off-wiki communication about the Al-Aqsa Mosque RM prior to your involvement there? Onceinawhile (talk) 09:31, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

I did not. And I was very disappointed to see that someone would accuse me of being a SP, when a simple check would show that I am here for over 15 years, with tens of thousands of edits, in all languages. Atbannett (talk) 10:04, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the confirmation. Please could you explain how you came to know about the closure of the RM? In my experience it would be unusual to have had a page on a watchlist which had never previously been edited or commented on (either here or on other language wikis), and if it had been watched over the last seven weeks, a comment could have been made on the RM previously. An average of 3 edits per month over 15 years, and never once before commenting on another editor's RM, makes this a unique occurrence in your enwiki edit history. Onceinawhile (talk) 10:27, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Against my better judgment, a couple of things. A. Onceinawhile, that SPI was baseless. Atbannett has been here for 16 years and while he or she does not have a ton of edits here, they have some 55 thousand on the Hebrew Wikipedia. Tombah's edits seem miles away from Eladkarmel in a ton of ways, from the substance to the formatting to the level of English. You really should reconsider the way youre seemingly interrogating others, play the ball not the man. If you have actual evidence of misconduct, not this seems odd or it doesnt feel right to me, then you can present that, but nothing in that SPI shows any evidence that those editors are the same. And they are not obligated to answer your questions. B. This section is an abuse of this Wikiproject, and the one below suggesting sometimes it is easier to talk in Hebrew as though this WikiProject, or any other page, should be used to coordinate strategy against an editor or page is risible, and any editor who participates in this WikiProject and doesnt want it associated with such blatantly poor behavior should shut this down asap and even consider reporting the editor yourself. This is unreal, and the admins that I know of that are listed as members should do something about it. Pinging Ynhockey and Number 57. nableezy - 22:13, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Yes I spotted that myself on the SPI - I hadn’t looked at global contributions at first. As soon as I saw their status as experienced editors on another wiki, I knew my initial assessment was wrong. I don’t have the same level of insight you have shown in assessing English or formatting. I have always relied on an Occam's razor-type approach to SPIs – focusing on the relative probability of the scenarios.
Overall, I read the conclusion of your point A above as saying that we shouldn’t bother trying to identify or discourage the possibility of invisible off-wiki canvassing. Because there is no forum for assessing canvassing (maybe I should try to set one up?), and it cannot be assessed like an SPI, it can only be done using a probability-based assessment, and by asking the editors in question. Unless you know of another way? Onceinawhile (talk) 23:59, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
If you dont have actual evidence you need to keep your suspicions to yourself. Yes, the timing is suspicious. That is not enough to badger the users about it. I think lots and lots of solicitation happens off-wiki. Until I have some evidence of it however thats just my own personal opinion that stays personal. nableezy - 01:36, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
Why is statistical-improbability not evidence? Is it really less weighty and objective than the language comparisons you successfully use in SPIs?
Do you see my point that there are only two types of evidence that can be used to identify off-wiki canvassing – probability and ability to explain?
Onceinawhile (talk) 05:50, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
I have been doing a bit more reading on canvassing / votestacking. I always understood it to be on par with sockpuppeting as a deadly sin. But now I see from discussions like this one in 2019 between eminently sensible editors that there is a sizeable view in the community that canvassing - even with the intent to votestack - is fine so long as noone sees it. I really am shocked to see that view, and need some time to digest it. Onceinawhile (talk) 10:02, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
The off-wiki canvassing you're describing is called Meatpuppetry, and is prohibited. Drsmoo (talk) 13:19, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
That is part of it. As I understand it, Meatpuppetry relates primarily to new single-purpose accounts. The broader term is WP:Votestacking. Onceinawhile (talk) 13:44, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
"as though this WikiProject, or any other page, should be used to coordinate strategy against an editor or page is risible, and any editor who participates in this WikiProject and doesnt want it associated with such blatantly poor behavior should shut this down asap and even consider reporting the editor yourself." Isn't that kind of a stretch from what was actually said? Sir Joseph (talk) 13:40, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
I don't think it is. The No Personal Attacks article goes into detail on why this is bad. Drsmoo (talk) 13:45, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
I suggest we examine here Onceinawhile's edits, discuss how to prevent future attacks, and what steps to take here now. But sure, since nobody here wants to deal with it and would rather cheer it on I can report it myself. nableezy - 13:46, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Operation Breaking Dawn

Operation Breaking Dawn

Isn't it a bit weird that the definition of the operation is "was a series of airstrikes from 5 to 7 August, 2022, by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) against Palestinian Islamic Jihad[failed verification] in the Gaza Strip."?

What about the rockets to Israel? Adam080 (talk) 12:32, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

The way it is currently framed, it is "an operation", so it is little surprise that the focus in on the planned actions of said operation. If you think this is incorrect framing, then you can make your opinions known in the ongoing move discussion, where a range of more neutral alternative titles have been proposed. Iskandar323 (talk) 12:57, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

Help Needed: Israel Canada

Hi,

Most companies on the TA 125 index have an article, it seems like a no-brainer. Yet, a draft for Israel Canada was declined recently, even though it is one of the most prominent Israeli real estate companies in Israel and the main sponsor for Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club, as well as having Subsidiaries that are responsible for some of the most ambitious real estate projects in Israel today.

The decline was made by stating that the article was not supported by the references; it was said it only had routine mentions. Which is not true. Obviously, since it is an Israeli company, most mentions are from Israeli websites, but they are notable news organizations such as Globes, Calcalist, The Jerusalem Post, etc.

If I can please have some assistance from active members of this project so I may improve the draft and get it approved, it would be appreciated.

Thank you

"Maccabiah Games" articles for deletion under this project

Articles for deletion:

  1. Judo at the 2009 Maccabiah Games
  2. Judo at the 2013 Maccabiah Games
  3. Judo at the 2017 Maccabiah Games
  4. Judo at the 2022 Maccabiah Games

The above articles, under this project, are currently being considered for deletion (see discussion HERE), following the deletion of the Judo at the 2005 Maccabiah Games article. Some of the deletion supporters argue that ALL "SPORT at the YEAR Maccabiah Games" article should be deleted, not just the judo ones. Feel free to join the discussion. The article is too long when it comes to Halakha and pure theology (although it can be further divided into sub-articles), while too short when it comes to its practical applciation in Israel (how the permit thing is mentioned on packaging, how many Haredim "boycott" the permit etc.)

I believe the article should be more like its Hebrew counterpart. Synotia (talk) 09:43, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

Hebrew citation cleanup help needed

Would someone mind taking a look at the citations to Hebrew sources in the article Party lists for the 2022 Israeli legislative election and checking to see whether they're translated correctly? I tried cleaning them up as best as I could using Google Translate, but I don't understand Hebrew so I don't know how accurately the source names were translated. Since I also don't know how to romanize Hebrew, I left the |title= parameters blank; so, if someone can fill those in, then that would be appreciated. FWIW, I don't know whether the sources cited are reliable; I only was trying to clean them up in response to a question posted at the Wikipedia Teahouse not too long ago. Anyway, there are eight citations to Hebrew sources in the ariticle: Nos. 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13 and 14 . Marchjuly (talk) 01:19, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your contribution! The sources are reliable for the purposes of that article. I found only a couple of very minor issues - I guess Google Translate has become really good! Alaexis¿question? 13:45, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for double checking things Alaexis. Do you think you could add the romanized version of the Hebrew script to the |title= parameter of each citation to a Hebrew source. Google Translate isn't much help with that. The syntax for the relevant citation template parameters should look like |script-title=he:Hebrew script, |title=Romanized Hebrew and |trans-title=English translation of Hebrew. Finally, based on a comment made at the very end of Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1170#Visual edit: value (help), website= (help) by Mcljlm, there might be some other Israeli election related articles that need to be cleaned up in a similar manner. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:09, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
I'm not sure whether the romanisations are needed in this case. Neither Hebrew-speakers nor non-speakers get additional information from them. Alaexis¿question? 06:30, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
That's fine then. I don't understand Hebrew so I'm not sure how often it's romanized. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:25, 24 November 2022 (UTC);[Note: Post edited by Marchjuly to adding the word "fine" to the first sentence (underlined). -- 21:32, 1 December 2022 (UTC)]

There's been a discussion at Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Ori_Gordin relating to this article. I've found sources for most of the biographical details, but struggling to pin down "He was born in San Diego where his parents studied, and the family moved to Israel in 1971" also I can't see a definitive source that his mother was called Rachel. This may be in one of the sources over at הלל גורדין – ויקיפדיה (wikipedia.org) or he:אורי_גורדין but I'm not able to read them, would appreciate anyone sourcing the above either here, and I'll put it in, or at the article directly. Gate identification help

Hey, someone uploaded this image to Commons, claiming it depicts Jerusalem's Lions' Gate some time in the late 1960s. Except it doesn't, numerous details do not fit. So the question is, what does it actually show? Users on Hebrew wiki have pointed out that Lions or Leopards are popular motifs of Sultan Baybars or Lebanon's Shihab dynasty. Also, since it was taken by an Israeli, likely depicts a location in Jerusalem, the West Bank or the Sinai. Any help would be appreciated. Poliocretes (talk) 15:24, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

Nice puzzle. Google image search shows similar motifs at Jisr Jindas and Hasbaya, confirming the connections made by the Hebrew-wiki editors. Post-War Portraits of Israeli Politicians

Due to restoration of US copyright in the wake of the URAA, post-war images from Israel are usually still under US copyright. Therefore, they should not be hosted on Wikimedia Commons or as free files on the English Wikipedia, and they are liable to be deleted from there as soon as someone gets round to it. In particular, this affects the portrait images of a number of politicians such as those in commons:Category:Members of the First Knesset and Category:Members of the Second Knesset etc. It is likely that a large percentage of them are eligible for non-free use as infobox images on the English Wikipedia, but this would have to be considered on a case by case basis. We have made a new article: Iranian democracy movement that is intended as a WP:Broad concept article covering the political movements and many protests calling for regime change, and a new constitutional framework for Iran, in accord with the demands and aspirations of the Iranian people. It follows upon a recent summit meeting of diaspora opposition leaders, but not limited to that group or event alone. I first notified the other project of course: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Iran#New_Article_-_Iranian_democracy_movement, but thought to post it here as well, since its linked on the article Iran–Israel_proxy_conflict. There its noted that the regime often accuses these dissidents and opposition of being "Israel's army". I doubt that's true in any concrete organizational sense, but there may be a confluence of moral and intellectual solidarity somewhere, and perhaps there are some Persian Jews and Israelis who will find this relevant and consider contributing to the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaredscribe (talkcontribs) 22:33, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

Amutat Bat Melech

I'm trying to figure out whether the NGO Amutat Bat Melech (mentioned by The Jerusalem Post) is the same organisation as Bat Melech. Can anyone help me? Thanks Misha Wolf (talk) 19:22, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

Having done some further research, I've discovered the meanings of amuta and amutat. Next question: Is it better to link the organisation's name to the article about the organisation in the Hebrew Wikipedia (like this: Amutat Bat Melech [he]) or to link the organisation's name to the organisation's Web site (like this: Amutat Bat Melech)? I suppose that for a reader who isn't familiar with Hebrew, the latter would be more useful. Thanks Misha Wolf (talk) 00:28, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
I asked about this also at WP:Helpdesk and as a result of the advice I received, I've included both links. I've tweaked the name of the section, and it's now at Thirty-seventh government of Israel § Electronic tagging of domestic violence offenders. Misha Wolf (talk) 00:57, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Mizrachi (religious Zionism)

Came across Mizrachi (religious Zionism) which is really a mishmash of a page. The page began as a stub in May 2004 and went from there. There's no mention of the World Mizrachi Organization and what it does. Id like to improve it and wrote as such on the talk page. These concerns were first brought up in 2004 and then someone followed up with a comment 2 and a half years later!

Anyhow, if anyone has suggestions as to the best way to clean this up, happy to hear :) MaskedSinger (talk) 10:18, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

I have taken the long overdue step of creating an Al-Aqsa Mosque compound page to encompass the full architectural history of Al-Aqsa all in one place. This was not done previously, with there being separate articles for the Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque and Minarets of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, etc., but no single page drawing them all together historically and architecturally. The temple mount page provides some architectural overview, but it is so bound up in narrating the full history of the site and is substructure (so much so that it uses the 'mountain' infobox template, not the 'religious building' one) that it has never done full credit to the actual superstructure. Now there is a page that ties it all together. Iskandar323 (talk) 09:09, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Israel:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Nakba denial

I have created a page on the subject of Nakba denial - a topic of some weight in literature on the historiography of the Arab-Israeli conflict. I have barely scratched the surface of the available source, having prioritized the most readily accessible ones. There may very well be some gaping gaps, not least in that I don't have access to any of the best Ilan Pappé material, so haven't been able to directly quote him. More eyes welcome. English variety?

A question was asked at the IDF Talk page on consistent spelling of defense/defence. I answered as best as I could. Absent some really distinct, well-defined, well-documented Israeli English written variant, would this WikiProject be interested in making some generic guideline, such as to prefer American English spelling for Israel-related articles (or at least those of the past few decades)? (As to the question of 'If it ain't broke, why bother?' -- imo it's much better for everyone to state explicitly somewhere that some US-like style is preferred, with plain reasoning and sources, rather than to just take for granted that the US style will be dominant on WP.) The page Post-Zionism is a disaster of a piece of content at present. It's almost wholly unsourced, could potentially be a personal essay, and the only sources are some op-eds, not scholarship. It's so dysfunctional that it borders on a WP:TNT case, but I thought it might be worth flagging it as a doer-upper first. Iskandar323 (talk) 22:18, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

This isn't within our ambit, or at least not yet. Let's wait for the historiography to happen before we have our own Historikerstreit. And not to put too fine a point on it, the last item on the Post-Zionism's talk page is dated 27 June 2013, so no controversy there. (New Historians 11 March 2022 likewise). P.S. This hasn't gotten any attention on Wikipedia:WikiProject Israel Palestine Collaboration so I'm duplicating here. kencf0618 (talk) 14:43, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Community Council of Jerusalem

Random page patrol brought me to Yaacov Pat, and much to my astonishment the Community Council of Jerusalem did not have an article—one would have thought this ground would have been well covered. Hebrew-language source check

Could anyone here have a look at Draft:Saad Malki and determine whether it meets WP:N and WP:V? As far as I know, we don't have any active AfC reviewers who can read Hebrew. -- asilvering (talk) 17:58, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

The last source "Days with the Arab Israelis in Jaffa" does confirm that he was the chief editor of Ash-Shams in Cairo and then published a newspaper called Reshumot in Israel (though I'm not sure it's that Reshumot), so it looks okay. Any specific concerns? Alaexis¿question? 09:56, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Just looking to see if the sources contain sigcov rather than only passing mentions (that's the bar it has to pass to get through AfC) and that the translation is competent overall. Sounds like we're good on the last one - do you have opinions about whether it's sigcov? -- asilvering (talk) 18:11, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, there are no problems with translation (I've re-checked the article and it's the right Reshumot).
Regarding the notability, it's a bit of a borderline case. In the 1948 Haaretz article he's mentioned as an editor of Al-Shams who emigrated to Israel and started working at Reshumot. In the 1926 Palestine daily mail article he's mentioned briefly but described as an "important writer." I haven't checked the other sources, maybe we can ask the editor who wrote it to tell us which source gives the most extensive coverage. Alaexis¿question? 22:29, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Great, thank you so much. I'll accept it ("important writer" indicates to me that there are more sources, at least enough to justify AfD over AfC) and let the editor know it was borderline. -- asilvering (talk) 22:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Israel Today

There's a page in English WP entitled Israel Today but it's a redirect to Israel Hayom.[1] However a print and online Israel Today is published in English,[2] German [3] and Dutch;[4] an archived page mentions Japanese, Korean and Norwegian editions.[5] At one time it described itself as a news agency run by Israeli believers in Yeshua.[6]

Dutch WP has https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Today. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Israel_today it appears there once may have been an article in English WP. Whether or not an English WP article is justified https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Israel_Today&redirect=no needs editing. Mcljlm (talk) 22:19, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

The redirect gets about 10 visits a day (likely all bots). While Israeli Today (1978) does exist, and is apparently noted on Dutch Wikipedia, I don't believe it's notable under English Wikipedia criteria, and the expectation that Israel Today redirects to Israel Hayom makes more sense as the main target. If the other article is created, we can create a WP:DISAMBIG of course. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 22:22, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Can't anything be done Shushugah to distinguish between them unless an article is created for the actual Israel Today? Mcljlm (talk) 03:23, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
