WikiProject X pilot testing

Hello WikiProject Food and drink!

Based on the recommendation of Northamerica1000, I am happy to announce that WikiProject X has selected this project as part of a round of pilot testing.

The goal of WikiProject X is to improve the WikiProject experience through research, design, and experimentation. On that basis, we've prepared a new WikiProject design template based around modules. These modules include features you are already familiar with, such as article alerts, but also new features such as automated work lists, a feed of discussions taking place on the 27,304 talk pages tagged by WikiProject Food and drink, and a new member profile system. To see what this new setup looks like, you can browse the first round of pilot tests: WikiProject Cannabis, WikiProject Evolutionary biology, WikiProject Ghana, WikiProject Hampshire, WikiProject Women's Health.

If there is consensus among the participants of this WikiProject, I will proceed with implementing this interface based on the current contents of Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink. Please let me know if you have any questions or requests. Harej (talk) 23:35, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

  • Leaning support – provided there is minimal loss of content as per what presently exists, particularly text. This is a detailed project due to the diverse nature of it's scope, hence it has a lot of sections and information. North America1000 00:53, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
    • I can work with that. What is the most important thing for anyone visiting the WikiProject to know before diving in? Presenting that information as efficiently as possible will help make sure people read it. Harej (talk) 01:39, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
      • @Harej: Back in September 2013, interested project members had a lengthy discussion which resulted in the present order of content on the page. As such, the present order is optimal, in my opinion. Something to keep in mind is that the project also has a great deal of subpages (see here) that need to be taken into consideration. I've been out of this for months so I may be a tad rusty, but 'Category:Hermano (band) albums' and 'Category:Wolfmother songs' in the 'Not tagged by the Wikiproject' for Wikiproject Cannabis? Does that link to you guys or is that Reports Bot's fault? MM (WhatIDo WHATIDO?) (Now THIS... I did.) 11:55, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Matticusmadness, the list of suggested pages is based on pages (including other categories) that are not tagged by the WikiProject but belong to categories that are tagged. It works reasonably well but then you get far enough down the category tree that you start getting less relevant data. The bands you mention are considered to be "stoner rock" bands apparently, so they could tangentially be relevant, but I would leave that as a matter of discretion for the WikiProject. Down the line there will be an option to mark suggestions as false positives so that they don't show up in future updates. Harej (talk) 15:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Ah so you're not actually with this WikiProject. Right. Well the suggestions don't majorly break the syntax so from what I saw of the proposition for the style of WikiProject Cannabis, I think it'll be okay. MM (WhatIDo WHATIDO?) (Now THIS... I did.) 16:13, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Support Per above comments. MM (WhatIDo WHATIDO?) (Now THIS... I did.) 16:13, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Neutral - I am still actively working on wikis, but currently not any WMF sites (only ones that I administer). If this is something that may end up rolling into the core and eventually end up affecting me on my own wikis, then I would be interested. Otherwise, I need to keep my focus on building my wikis (since that's what I have to do if I want to eventually see a return on my investment). Two thoughts though... I understand the whole switch to modules, and it's probably wonderful for here on en.wiki, but modules kinda suck for off-site wikis. At least now there is a precompiled version of Lua included with the MW distro, so it's more portable. However, it's still a pain forcing users to learn a new language just to edit templates, er, modules. While advanced templating is a skill and nearly a language of its own, a third of learning it is just learning how to edit wikitext, another third is just basic algorithm design, and the final third (if that) is learning to template. Modules are faster, they do more, they are nifty. But they also have down sides. Then again, so many of the original templates here have become vast sprawling meta templates that incorporate a good dozen or more sub-templates, child templates, and wrappers to do the most basic things, that templates aren't really an answer either. So I guess I will end with this... one design consideration I would like to see incorporated is ease of portability to offsite (i.e., non-WMF) wikis. Even if that means Lua, even if it means a little more complexity in design to make it easier to port it, that's okay. I'm all for keeping things simple, usable (as in usability), quick (page load times and server demands), and reliable (difficult to crash). I have very little time to spare, but if you think my input would be helpful, I am willing to share some of that time for the betterment of the community. Neutral - Please provide an example of the design you wish to implement. I have been trying to implement structural changes to the format of the page and would like to see what you intend to do before discarding literally months of work. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 21:07, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

Proper location for US restaurants and chefs - specifically Atlanta, GA

I am about to embark on a personal project to add pages for Atlanta restaurants and chefs to Wikipedia.

My question is can I create a Category for "Restaurants in Atlanta" as well as "Chefs in Atlanta"? While WikiProject Food and Drink focuses specific foods and drinks - it also include restaurants to some degree.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

tdempsey (talk) 15:38, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

@Tdempsey: Category:Restaurants in Atlanta, Georgia already exists, so you can work with this. I personally see no problem with creating a category for Category:Chefs from Atlanta, Georgia, although others might, as per potential concerns that may arise about inclusion criteria, such as whether or not the chef currently lives in Atlanta, was born in Atlanta, etc. As a comparison, check out List of artists from Brooklyn and the AfD discussion that occurred about the article here. Can someone have a look at Atlantic Giant? It seems as though the article was rewritten in 2014 in an NPOV manner, and now consists of an intro that does not reveal the topic of the article, but instead is a criticism of the name. Armstrong's Barn

Bit of a difficult situation on Armstrong's Barn. I was corrected about the history of the restaurant, with somebody else pointing me at the fact that Armstrong's Barn was an existing restaurant when Paolo Tullio opened it. So that opening was in fact a reopening. To make it more complicated: Paolo Tullio got the Michelin star as a present on the merits of his predecessor Peter Robinson. Robinson sold the restaurant, due to personal circumstances, to Tullio between the Michelin assessment and the publication of the Michelin Guide.

The point is: should Peter Robinson be recognised as a Michelin-starred chef and as so, warrant an own article? The Banner talk 23:25, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Help with Kinder Surprise correction

Hi there, I'm looking for editors who might be interested to help with a quick correction in the Kinder Surprise article and thought WikiProject Food might be the ideal place to ask! I'm working on behalf of Ferrero SpA via Glover Park Group and have a financial conflict of interest, so I will not be making any edits to this article: instead I wanted to ask editors about correcting an erroneous mention of different product—Kinder Joy—from the first line of the introduction. The article currently opens: "Kinder Surprise, also known as a Kinder Egg or Kinder Joy..." As Kinder Joy is a totally separate (albeit also egg-shaped) item, this isn't correct. I've left a full request on the Kinder Surprise Talk page providing some sources to show that these are indeed separate things. If anyone can take a look, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 22:48, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Visit by President Obama to Sukiyabashi Jiro restaurant noteworthy?

An IP editor has now twice removed from the Sukiyabashi Jiro restaurant article a short paragraph (and news photo) about President Obama's visit there in 2014 with the comment that it is just a political photo-op and not noteworthy. My view is that a visit by two heads of state (President Obama and Prime Minister Abe) to a restaurant is noteworthy, and it naturally garnered a fair amount of press coverage at the time. The same will also apply to the Jiro Ono (chef) article (about the chef), as that also includes a similar mention of him serving Obama. I'd be interested to hear what other editors here think. Thanks. --DAJF (talk) 06:58, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
