need help with refs behind paywalls

For Swan Lake Fire

If you look in the recent history, you will see someone is challenging the notion that southcentral Alaska was unusually hot and dry this year. Now, I've lived there 20 years so I'm pretty damn sure it was, and there are also numerous articles in reliable sources such as Anchorage Daily News and the Washington Post, but unfortunately citing them is hampered for me due to paywalls. I'm either over my limit or they aren't giving the "10 free a month" anymore. Googling "Southcentral Alaska hottest summer" brings up plenty of such cites, I'm hoping someone with access can give me some full cites to use so this doesn't become an ongoing problem. Thanks, Beeblebrox (talk) 17:04, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Beeblebrox: If you could give a few examples on which ones in particular you'd like access to, it'd be more helpful instead of guessing which ones you would like. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 17:08, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's kind of the problem, I can find all sorts of headlines, but I can't actually read any of the articles, so I'm not sure which ones would be best for this purpose. I'm trying to establish that not only was it hot in July, it was abnormally hot and dry through the spring as well. I may have found something from NOAA that helps and isn't behind a paywall but something from a media source would be good too. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:18, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Beeblebrox: Just give us a list of all the articles that look promising and we'll send you everything we have access to. Compassionate727 (T·C) 14:58, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate that but I think I've found enough things I can view in the meantime to ward off climate change deniers. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:54, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ghostbusters (1984) related scholary documents

Hola, I am trying to promote Ghostbusters to a featured article and a reviewer wants me to look at scholarly sources discussing the film. This is beyond my area of expertise, and the ones the reviewer provided would cost upwards of $150 to access, which is just not something I am willing to do. If anyone has access to academic resources about the film that they can provide I would be appreciative. The main issue is as I don't know what exists, I don't know what I'm looking for. The reviewer (Nikkimaria) did include these four as examples:

  1. https://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/intellect/ajpc/2015/00000004/00000001/art00003

Compassionate727, yes this is all completed, thank you everyone! Darkwarriorblake / SEXY ACTION TALK PAGE! 15:45, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkwarriorblake: I'm a little confused now. You said, "this is all completed," which Bruce1ee interpreted to mean that all your requests have been fulfilled, but I'm not sure that's what you actually meant. I don't see that anyone above provided #3 (the Peter Lang article). Did you receive it elsewhere? Do you think you no longer need it? If either of those things is true, we can indeed mark this as resolved, but if you have not received #3 and would still like it, we should leave this open. @Compassionate727: Maybe I was a little hasty in closing this, but my take on Darkwarriorblake's remark is that the Lang article is no longer required and that the request can be closed. Please correct me if I'm wrong. In the meantime I've removed the resolved tag. —Bruce1eetalk 17:41, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

9th (Highland) Infantry Division

  • Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (1952). "Historical Records of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders". 6. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons: pp. 39–44. OCLC 222265108. {{cite journal}}: |page= has extra text (help); Cite journal requires |journal= (help)

I am currently working to update the article on the 9th (Highland) Infantry Division. The above source and pages contain information on the 5th Battalion during its time with the division. From what I can see on snippet view, it would seem to be quite beneficial and help flesh out some detail about the division during its brief existence. If anyone is able to access the pages, it would be greatly appreciated. In addition, does the source mention a specific author?

Thanks, EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 19:04, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Wugapodes:, would it also be possible to also request pages 178-187 in regards to the 1st Battalion, Liverpool Scottish and pages 188-? in regards to the 2nd Battalion, Liverpool Scottish? The pages for the 2nd Battalion would only have to cover their history up until 1942. These pages would be used to add some additional detail to the 55th (West Lancashire) Infantry Division article. The article currently provides a general overview of the division's Second World War service, but it is potential that these pages could provide more specific information especially the opening year of the war were few sources discuss what happened.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 04:10, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@EnigmaMcmxc: thanks for pining me again. I'm back this week so I've placed the request; hopefully it's here soon. To be clear you're requesting pages 39-44 and 178-187, and you would also like however much is available on the 2nd Battalion, Liverpool Scottish starting on 188; am I correct? It's around 20 pages so I'd be fine sending those additional sections along. Wug·a·po·des 20:51, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No need to say sorry, your help is incredibly appreciated! The 55th Div article is being prepped for its GA-review, and while the 9th will not be able to move forward to FA status (due to the use of doctoral work that has yet to be published elsewhere) following the conclusion of its A-Class review, it can still benefit from additional information to provide a more full picture for the readers.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 17:51, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not entirely. I see no realistic chance of this getting filled through this page. Also, while I do not know what you intend to do with it, this being an unpublished License thesis (~ Bachelor's thesis) it would very likely not qualify as a reliable source under Wikipedia:Reliable sources#Scholarship ("Masters dissertations and theses are considered reliable only if they can be shown to have had significant scholarly influence" [Bachelor's theses are not even mentioned]). Also, as per the instructions at the top, "We cannot perform full book copy requests due to copyright" (this thesis is over 100 pages long, according to the RERO record, [8]). Best, — Pajz (talk) 14:22, 17 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info! I have posted an honors bachelors' thesis (publicly posted) from the 1960s - a time when way fewer people were getting degrees - in a references section for a Russian novel, a topic with not a lot of English sources about it. The Japanese School of Geneva doesn't seem to have a lot of published sources and I was hoping this document would help, but the unpublished bit if anything concerns me.
I'm a bit surprised a bachelor's thesis would be over 100 pages in length. My American bachelors' degree theses were about 25 pages or so, if I can recall correctly. Anyhow since it's lengthy to the point where the full work is not available, I would instead ask for the table of contents and/or index so I know what's inside and I can request specific parts/pieces I need. If this was published, even if it was a bachelor's thesis, I'd be happy to get the table of contents and/or the index.
WhisperToMe (talk) 03:40, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Pajz, ETH Zurich says "In order not to discriminate against holders of the «old» Licentitate/Diploma, it declares these officially equivalent to the «new» Master's degree." So this should be equivalent to a master's degree. However, if it is indeed unpublished it would still be a roadblock. This degree is from 1988 so this seems to be from before Bologna.
The RERO profile does say the work is available although I don't know if it is electronically available or if one must scan pages in person. Either way for now if it's a published work I would like just the table of contents and/or index so I can determine what content is inside it.
WhisperToMe (talk) 03:59, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
WhisperToMe, sure, just a note that a Lizenziat thesis is not the same as a Mémoire de licence. The Lizenziat was the old equivalent to the German Diplom (usually a 5-year programme) and is indeed comparable to a Master's Degree, a mémoire de licence is something that I've only ever come across in the French-speaking part of Switzerland where it completes a 3-year programme (an "undergraduate" programme in Switzerland/Germany). So one has to be a bit careful there. (Not that that would make me much of an expert but I've studied in Switzerland - it's all a bit confusing ...) The RERO record just says there are two physical copies in Geneva, I'm confident that no electronic version exists. If you want a small portion, you could ask their university library, maybe you're lucky. Best, — Pajz (talk) 09:19, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That is quite interesting! I would like to find some documents about the differences in the university systems of the Swiss regions so I can cite the info in that section. Anyhow I made a post on FRwiki and I'll also contact the university library directly. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:07, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Parthian and Early Sasanian Empires: Adaptation and Expansion

The Parthian and Early Sasanian Empires: Adaptation and Expansion [9] The chapters: (1) Some Aspects of Political History: Early Arsacid Kings and the Seleucids (pp. 3-7), (2) The Arsacids and Commagene (pp. 8-22), (5) Remarks on the Location of the Province of Parthia in the Sasanian Period (pp. 42-46), (10) Parthian Studies: Two New Notes (pp. 76-80).

Since this is quite the seminal work, if more material from this book can be provided apart from the chapters requested, then that would be even better, since there are lots of articles that can benefit from it (I already have chapter 3 and 4, which I got from academia.edu).

Review of The Plumed Serpent

Hello, I am looking for the text of P. Kaganoff's review of The Plumed Serpent in Publishers Weekly, for use at the article The Plumed Serpent. Publication details: 4/13/1992, Vol. 239 Issue 18, p56. ISSN 0000-0019. Note that EBSCO has only a listing of the review, not its text.

Thanks, FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 09:48, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@FreeKnowledgeCreator: I presume you've seen the online version? Also: Gale has full text coverage from January 5, 1990 - Current. However, I checked Gale and there's only the citation for some reason. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 17:52, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The review you linked to above is dated "Reviewed on: 06/01/1992". The review I requested is dated "4/13/1992". They could be the same review, posted on different dates, in which case Kaganoff's review is not helpful. However, if they are different reviews, I'd still like to see Kaganoff's. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 00:41, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gale doesn't have it on June 1st 1992. I suspect that date is incorrect or the online date of publication. Again, Gale doesn't have a fulltext of April 13th (though it should), so someone else would need to confirm whether the online version matches the print version. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 00:59, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MrLinkinPark333 and FreeKnowledgeCreator: When I looked into this on Friday, I found a number of book reviews by Kaganoff in the April 13, 1992 issue and other issues of Publishers' Weekly on Gale, but none of the entries were reviews of The Plumed Serpent. Did you find something my previous search missed? Compassionate727 (T·C) 13:09, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Compassionate727: It's still there on Gale. The Plumed Serpent Publishers Weekly. 239.18 (Apr. 13, 1992): p56. Problem is it's blank when it should be full-text. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 17:49, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@FreeKnowledgeCreator: Oh, you'll enjoy this (I hope). So, I checked the microfiche. Turns out, the "review" is actually a summary, and a 30-word one at that. I can't be bothered to obtain your email address and send a PDF of such a thoroughly useless item, so I was just going to copy the thing in full here. But I actually don't even need to do that, because the webpage MrLinkinPark333 linked to back on July 12 is the "review," in full. Lmao. Compassionate727 (T·C) 18:46, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am looking for Dennis Altman's article "In's and out's of sexuality", for use at Sexuality and Its Discontents. Publication details: The Advocate, issue 438, page 110, ISSN 0001-8996. Unfortunately these are the only publication details I am aware of.

Thanks, Freeknowledgecreator (talk) 02:56, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The date is January 14, 1986, assuming I did math correctly.[a] There is no other important information for this publication, as far as I can see. Compassionate727 (T·C) 18:18, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  1. ^ The date is derived. I was able to pull the issue numbers and publication dates for a couple of other Advocate articles from ProQuest. I looked up the publication and found it was bi-weekly at this time, which I confirmed by comparing the dates and issue numbers of the articles I had. From there, I simply went backward 210 weeks on a calendar (210 being twice the difference between your issue 438 and my oldest issue 543). If I did that math correctly, the date should be January 14, 1986.
