Artoday, 1995 or 1999 edition, for check of potential copyvio.

  • Lucie-Smith, Edward (1995). Artoday. London: Phaidon. ISBN 9780714838885.

For Karel Balcar

I am concerned that the linked article may be a copyright violation of this source. Unfortunately, I have not been able to access the 1995/1999 (the ISBN matches the 1995 edition, the reference states the 1999 edition) to confirm or deny this. Could someone with access please look into this?

Thanks, BilledMammal (talk) 06:49, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@BilledMammal:. The article is not a copyright violation of Artoday. As near as I can tell, that book doesn't contain a single word about Karel Balcar. Lucie-Smith does write something close to the sentence that was italicized in the article. Wikipedian NoJin changed words here and there in an apparent attempt to paraphrase him. Perhaps that's why they didn't use quotation marks. Accurately quoting a single sentence is not a copyright violation, so I've edited the article to use Lucie-Smith's original language, placed it in quotation marks, and cited the page number on which it appears. Is there any more information you need from Artoday, or are you ready to mark this thread {{resolved}}? --Worldbruce (talk) 22:22, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Worldbruce:. That does bring up other concerns about the article, but none that are relevant here; I am ready to mark this resolved. BilledMammal (talk) 06:44, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1980s Newsbank search request (Texas sources)

{{resolved}}

Hello. I'm looking for specific sources for my article draft at Annette Smith-Knight. I have a February 5, 1987 Denton Daily Lass O source that says she had worked for Myra McDaniel, who was the Texas Secretary of State at the time from 1984 to January 1987. I also have a July 21, 1993 source from the Victoria Advocate (Texas) saying that Annette Smith-Knight worked for the Texas Secretary of State for three years, making this either 1986 to 1988 or 1987 to 1989. I'm looking for several things:

  • 1) A source that shows she worked for Jack Rains, who was Texas Secretary of State from 1987 to 1989.
  • 2) Any sources that gives specific positions she worked in for the Secretary of State
  • 3) A source that states if she was hired in 1986 or 1987.

At the time, her name was Annette Smith but it might also say Annette Smith-Greene. If there's any mention of her playing for the Texas Longhorns at Austin or Bay City, this is the same person. Thanks! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:24, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1970s to 2000s Newsbank request (Texas) for Barbara Brown / Barbara Brown-McCoy

{{resolved}}

Hello. I'm looking to make an article on Barbara Brown (basketball) (now Barbara Brown-McCoy), who was a 1979 FIBA World champion in women's basketball. As I'm struggling for sources, I like to request if anyone with Newsbank access see if there's indepth coverage for her. I have these two sources and a July 15, 1977 Abilene Reporter News article, but that's it. I know she played basketball at Stephen F. Austin. In 1979, she won gold at FIBA world championship, Pan American Games and Jones Cup. She also was going to compete at 1980 Olympics before it was boycotted. Otherwise, I know she coached high school basketball at Bryan Adams and South Oak Cliff before becoming an athletic director at Dallas Independent School District. That's all from the first link above, but I don't have in-depth articles that mention it. TLDR I'm looking for any coverage of Barbara Brown / Barbara Brown-McCoy between the 1970s to 2000s. She might have also been named Barbara Brown-Robinson, but I'm not sure. Thanks! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:47, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Copy of ST Format #5

I am looking for someone with a copy of ST Format #5 (December 1989) which I could not find at archive.org because according to this index: http://www.stformat.com/stf05/index.html there is a review of three games by the same company, including Grand Fleet (video game), Kriegsmarine, and Main Battle Tank. Unfortunately the index does not give a page # but if anyone can help me get a copy of that review it would be appreciated. :)

Thanks, Störm (talk) 05:18, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Störm, What is the evidence that this is a reliable source? Cambridge Scholars Publishing is effectively self-publishing as far as editing and fact-checking go, so Eftekhar would need to meet WP:SPS for this to be admissible as a reliable source. (t · c) buidhe 05:29, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps they meet WP:SPS point "Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established subject-matter expert, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications." as they were awarded PhD on the subject by the University of York (link:https://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4552/) and is the best available source in English-language which discusses the subject in detail. Störm (talk) 05:59, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would just cite the thesis, which is publicly accessible. (t · c) buidhe 06:08, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
They do seem to have some kind of advisory board (https://www.cambridgescholars.com/pages/eab-social-sciences). I am new to this publisher. Can you please share some reliable sources where this publisher has been reviewed. Störm (talk) 06:17, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know, but the book is held by 450 libraries worldwide (if this book is not reliable then they will not do this). Störm (talk) 06:36, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

David Irving's books[15] are also held by hundreds of libraries, doesn't make them reliable. There are a few discussions on RSN about them as well as being marked as predatory by User:Headbomb/unreliable. More info at the wikipedia article Cambridge Scholars Publishing. Major Taylor by Andrew Ritchie, citing Brooklyn Daily Eagle

{{Resolved}}

  • Ritchie, Andrew (1996). Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer (5 ed.). San Francisco: John Hopkins Paperbacks. p. 65. ISBN 0-8018-5303-6.

For Madison (cycling), Six-day racing.

The articles in question have a quotation from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle:

The wear and tear upon their nerves and their muscles, and the loss of sleep make them [peevish and fretful]. If their desires are not met with on the moment, they break forth with a stream of abuse. Nothing pleases them. These outbreaks do not trouble the trainers with experience, for they understand the condition the men are in.

This is cited to Ritchie's book. What I'd like to find is the date of the original Brooklyn Daily Eagle article, and (ideally) what expression Ritchie has replaced with "peevish and fretful" - I imagine that it's considered offensive these days, but, per WP:NOTCENSORED, I believe that, in this situation, we should be able to see the original language used.

Thanks, Tevildo (talk) 23:59, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In Google Books, the paragraph reads in full:

The riders are becoming peevish and fretful. The wear and tear upon their nerves and their muscles, and the loss of sleep make them so. If their desires are not met with on the moment, they break forth with a stream of abuse. Nothing pleases them. These outbreaks do not trouble the trainers with experience, for they understand the condition the men are in.

I am doubtful that this is really from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. In Google Books, the source is given in endnote 11. On Amazon, note 11 reads, “Unidentified newspaper clipping in Taylor scrapbook.” Note 10 goes to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, the probable reason for the miscitation. John M Baker (talk) 17:36, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! I've updated the articles accordingly. Tevildo (talk) 22:02, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Jo-Jo Eumerus: Does this one work for you with Google Books? It was published at Berlin in 1900. Anything published in German is 70 years after death of author or 70 years after publication for anonymous authors. I dont know which country youre in, so you could try changing the domain name for the google books link to see if theres a copy there. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:22, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MrLinkinPark333:No it doesn't work (Switzerland). I think that the visibility is controlled by IP not by domain, anyway. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:52, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
      • @Jo-Jo Eumerus: Hmm. In that case, this should work. Otherwise, you can use the Problem melden link at the bottom of the page to explain why you believe it's Public Domain in Switzerland, so you can access it. Commons shows Switzerland has the same copyright lengths as Germany per above. Therefore, I think anything PD in Germany would be PD in Switzerland. I'm not 100% sure if theres a rule for works published outside of Switzerland. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 17:13, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Two pages from a history book

Hello, I'm in need of two pages (p.227 and a bibliographic reference) from this book:

For Salitis#Identification; beside of the content of the requested page (227), I hope to identify that "Allbright and Dumont" source(s) mentioned in the article, so I would be grateful if someone can also get the page(s) from the bibliography mentioning this specific source(s).

Many thanks, Lone-078 (talk) 10:14, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

{{resolved}} Добрый вечер! работаю над статьёй Хетлинг, Фрэнсис (Francis Hetling). Для продолжения работы и доведения до статуса хорошей или избранной есть достаточно материалов, но никак не могу найти статьи:

For Therese Forster. I have so far used only the snippet view on Google Books: [27], which unfortunately keeps me in the dark about some aspects. The easiest to use other version is probably a microform available at UWisconsin, Madison. Oddly enough, Worldcat finds very different places for ISSN compared to the other results.

London Times query

{{resolved}} Is the London Times available in Wikipedia Library Bundle? I can't log in to check.

  • Griffin, Jeremy & Nico Hines (October 28, 2008). "Who's the greatest? The Times US presidential rankings". London Times.

For Historical rankings of presidents of the United States -- trying to find polls done outside the US. I wrote to the Times, but they weren't much help.

Thanks — kwami (talk) 10:30, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@kwami: If you mean The Times (London Times redirects to The Times), then it is available in the Wikipedia Library Bundle in The Times Digital Archive via Gale here. —Bruce1eetalk 11:26, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, you should have access to it. You appear to meet the criteria at the top of this page. —Bruce1eetalk 11:30, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my bad. WP forced me to change my password, and I was trying to use the old one. Thanks!
But how do I search with Gale? I'm copying the title, authors and date directly off the Times website, where they display the first few lines and say I need to sign in to see more. But Gale returns no results. Or, if I broaden the search, it returns thousands of results that have nothing obvious to do with my search.
Here is the Times link, BTW. — kwami (talk) 06:13, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@kwami: I can't find it either, and I searched through the entire October 28, 2008 issue in The Times Digital Archive. I suspect that what may be happening is that not all articles published in The Times online appear in the print edition of the paper. —Bruce1eetalk 07:33, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking the time to do that. I searched the issue too and didn't see it. I wondered if I'd gotten the date wrong or something. Didn't occur to me that the e-edition might be different.
How would you suggest going from here?
There's a different preview here. — kwami (talk) 17:25, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@kwami: Hopefully someone with a Times subscription will be able to help you. —Bruce1eetalk 17:39, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've signed up for a free trial. The links between subarticles no longer work, but a Google search was able to find them. — kwami (talk) 20:48, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Couldn't find the article in question, but the following article seems relevant.
MacIntyre, Ben (1 November 2008). "The big question: who is the greatest president of all time?". The Times. London. p. 42.
