Wikipedia:WikiProject Israel/Assessment

MainTalk PageHelpParticipantsAwardsArticle AssessmentTemplatesTo doNew ArticlesSister Projects

The assessment department of WikiProject Israel focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's State of Israel articles. The resulting article ratings are used within the project to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work, and are also expected to play a role in the Version 1.0 Editorial Team program.

The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject Israel}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Israel-related articles by quality and Category:Israel-related articles by importance, which serves as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist. The article assessment system is used to rate and improve articles under WP Israel. We use the standard Wikipedia rating system, as follows:

Frequently asked questions

See also the general assessment FAQ
1. What is the purpose of the article ratings?
The rating system allows the project to monitor the quality of articles in our subject areas, and to prioritize work on these articles. It is also utilized by the Wikipedia 1.0 program to prepare for static releases of Wikipedia content. Please note, however, that these ratings are primarily intended for the internal use of the project, and do not necessarily imply any official standing within Wikipedia as a whole.
2. How do I add an article to the WikiProject?
Just add {{WikiProject Israel}} to the talk page; there's no need to do anything else.
3. Someone put a {{WikiProject Israel}} template on an article, but it doesn't seem to be within the project's scope. What should I do?
Because of the large number of articles we deal with, we occasionally make mistakes and add tags to articles that shouldn't have them. If you notice one, feel free to remove the tag, and optionally leave a note on the project talk page (or directly with the person who tagged the article).
4. Who can assess articles?
Any member of WikiProject Israel is free to add—or change—the rating of an article. Editors who are not participants in this project are also welcome to assess articles, but should defer to consensus within the project in case of procedural disputes.
5. How do I rate an article?
Check the quality scale and select the level that best matches the state of the article; then, follow the instructions below to add the rating to the project banner on the article's talk page. Please note that some of the available levels have an associated formal review process; this is documented in the assessment scale.
6. Why didn't the reviewer leave any comments?
Unfortunately, due to the volume of articles that need to be assessed, we are unable to leave detailed comments in most cases. If you have particular questions, you might ask the person who assessed the article; they will usually be happy to provide you with their reasoning.
7. What if I don't agree with a rating?
You can list it in the section for assessment requests below, and someone will take a look at it. Alternately, you can ask any member of the project to rate the article again. Please note that some of the available levels have an associated formal review process; this is documented in the assessment scale.
8. Aren't the ratings subjective?
Yes, they are somewhat subjective, but it's the best system we've been able to devise. If you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!
9. What if I have a question not listed here?
If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the discussion page for this department; for any other issues, you can go to the main project discussion page.

How To Assess an Article

An article's assessment is generated from the class parameter in the WikiProject Israel project banner on the article's talk page. Articles for which a valid class is not provided are listed in Category:Unassessed Israel-related articles. At present, there are over ? Israel articles that need assessment (e.g., that need to have a class inserted in the class parameter of the template).

Israel articles to be assessed have some aspects of the template on their talk page, but the template may be incomplete. First, select an article from the list at Category:Unassessed Israel-related articles. Then, look over the article in anticipation of filling out the parameters of the Israel template. Next, replace the WikiProject Israel template on the article talk page with the following:

{{WikiProject Israel
|class=
|importance=}}

The above {{WikiProject Israel}} template has all the answers that you will need for most situations. From your review of the article, delete those answers and parameters that do not fit the article. Then, fill in the listas parameter (e.g., last name, first name), then save. And, you are done!

Importance parameter

An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter in the {{WikiProject Israel}} project banner on its talk page:

{{WikiProject Israel|importance=???}}

The following values may be used for the importance parameter to describe the relative importance of the article within the project (see Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Priority of topic for assessment criteria):

High (adds articles to Category:High-importance Israel-related articles)  High

Note that general notability need not be from the perspective of editor demographics; generally notable topics should be rated similarly regardless of the country or region in which they hold said notability. Thus, topics which may seem obscure to a Western audience—but which are of high notability in other places—should still be highly rated.

Requesting an assessment

If you have made significant changes to an article and would like an outside opinion on a new rating for it, please feel free to list it below. Please note that an importance rating may not be given in some cases if the reviewer is unfamiliar with the subject.

If you assess an article, please strike it off using <s>Strike-through text</s> so that other editors will not waste time going there too. Thanks!

  • Tel Kabri - Extensive edits and expansion. Also wondering about importance rating in light of media coverage over the wine cellar, but don't know if WP:RECENT applies here or how the whole importance assessment things. More work to be done soon on expanding Areas and Early work section. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 8 Tevet 5774 14:27, 11 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Moshe Mann - First commander of the IDF's Golani Brigade. Started by me. Infobox by CyberXRef. Expansion by Ynhockey. Thank you in advance. --Buspirtraz (talk) 00:18, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Two-state solution: The article has a "high" importance rating. The introduction to the article was very long and very incoherent (it had a "lead too long" tag). I have rewrote the introduction and either moved the material into separate sub-sections, or deleted it because of redundancies (the "diplomatic process" section). I have also added some material, notably in the "history" section, having to do with UN 242, which is the basis for the two-state solution. Would be good if someone takes a look at it. Thanks. Kingsindian (talk) 07:28, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Gerald Blidstein I have added additional material to the article on Gerald Blidstein. I removed the Stub designation and would appreciate someone giving it a new rating. Thank you very much. 183x2hope (talk) 04:54, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Australian_Jews_in_Israel I have expanded this article and would appreciate a revised assessment. Thank you! B0x3rg1r1 (talk) 02:46, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Nubian ibex I vastly expanded this article to include ecology, conservation, physiology, phylogeny, cultural significance, and other elements. I would like to request a re-evaluation on the quality scale --Bbreslau (talk) 21:12, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Nabataean Aramaic: after this article reached Good Article status earlier this year, I've incorporated the GA reviewer's extra suggestions, expanded the lead, and added some sample texts. Would love to get feedback on whether this is an A-class article or what to do to get there. Benji man (talk) 10:49, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  1. ^ For example, this image of the Battle of Normandy is grainy, but very few pictures of that event exist. However, where quite a number of pictures exist, for instance, the moon landing, FPC attempts to select the best of the ones produced.
  2. ^ An image has more encyclopedic value (often abbreviated to "EV" or "enc" in discussions) if it contributes strongly to a single article, rather than contributing weakly to many. Adding an image to numerous articles to gain EV is counterproductive and may antagonize both FPC reviewers and article editors.
  3. ^ While effects such as black and white, sepia, oversaturation, and abnormal angles may be visually pleasing, they often detract from the accurate depiction of the subject.
