Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Science/Collaboration of the Month

  • WP:HOSCOTM

Every month, a History of Science Collaboration of the Month will be selected using this page. The article may or may not yet exist. The topics can be related to the history of science, history of medicine, history of technology, or the history of philosophy of science; non-biographical articles are preferred, but biographies can be nominated as well. This collaboration is part of the History of Science WikiProject.

The History of Science Collaboration is On the Origin of Species.

The project aims to fill gaps in Wikipedia, to give users a focus and to give us all something to be proud of. It also provides an opportunity to recruit professional scholars to participate in Wikipedia. Any registered user can nominate and vote on articles (see Voting below). This collaboration uses approval voting. You do not have to be involved in the field of history of science or a related field to participate; the opinion of laypeople is valued both for article suggestions and to help ensure that articles are not too technical. New articles will be selected at the beginning of each month (see the record of previous collaborations).

For individuals wishing to notify others of articles being created or for which they are seeking collaborators, or to ask for completed pages to be peer-reviewed, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Science and the WikiProject discussion page.

Voting

Please vote in favor of as many candidates as you like; oppose votes have no effect (approval voting is used). Any registered user may vote for an article, provided that account's first edit occurred before the nomination. You do not have to have any special knowledge of the topic to nominate or vote for an article. To vote for an article, simply edit the appropriate section and add # ~~~~. If you believe that a topic does not fall within the scope of this project, please mention your objections in the "Comments" section. At the beginning of each month, the article currently with the most votes will be selected to be the new collaboration, although collaborations may be extended from time to time (for instance, during featured article candidacy). In the case of a tie, the article nominated first will be selected. When the number of nominations becomes large, old nominations with few votes will be removed. You may wish to see the archive of past nominations.

Nominations

Nominations may be made at any time. Nominators must be registered users. To make a nomination, follow these steps:

  1. Edit the list of nominations and paste the following text at the bottom: {{subst:HOSCOTMnew|article name|~~~~~|your reason for nominating|~~~~}}.
  2. Change the text accordingly (for example, {{subst:HOSCOTMnew|Social construction of technology|~~~~~|The article doesn't use any sources published since 1993 and society has constructed a lot of technology since then.|~~~~}}).
  3. Please add {{HOSCOTMnom}} to the top of the article's talk page.

Nominations for the next HOSCOTM

Islamic science

Nominated at 04:35, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

This article has recently been improved substantially by a few editors interested in the history of Islam. Attention by people interested in History of Science could do much to improve it further.

History of chemistry

Nominated at 21:21, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

This is one of the older articles in the collection and needs to be brought up to the standard set by more recently developed articles such as History of biology.

Robert Hooke

Nominated at 00:19, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Right. Robert Hooke (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) is a reasonable article, but I think we should make it an FA. I have in my possession Margaret 'Espinasse's copy of the five volumes of Gunther's Early Science at Oxford covering Hooke, I also have two other books on Hooke. I have never been involved in an FA, but I would love to work on a collaboration on this article. What say?

On the Origin of Species

  • Collaboration of the Month: January 2009
Nominated at 20:28, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

This article could potentially be the centerpiece of a history of biology-themed Main Page for November 24, 2009. 2009 is the 150 year anniversity of Origin and the 200 year anniversary of Darwin's birth, so if this article could be brought to Featured status in time, it would make for a high-profile chance to show off this and possibly other history of science content.--ragesoss (talk) 20:28, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, it made FA so it is time to get serious about picking another one. Rusty Cashman (talk) 10:29, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For info, The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs and Fertilisation of Orchids are now up for WP:GAN#Natural sciences. Any help or comments will be greatly appreciated. . . dave souza, talk 15:53, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

History of geophysics

Nominated at 04:51, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

This is a significant field with lots of interesting subjects like seismology and plate tectonics, yet the history is little more than lists of names. Lots of potential for improvement! RockMagnetist (talk) 04:52, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

{{HistSciAnnounce}} is our announcement box, highlighting collaboration articles that are undergoing peer review or are featured article candidates. It may be used for other history of science-related announcements as well. It will be blank when there are no announcements. It may be placed on user pages or user talk pages for convenience.

The History of Science Collaboration is On the Origin of Species.

{{HOSCOTMnew}} sets up new nominations. It should always be substituted.
