The Situation

  • Yearly articles are the first target and the progress is shown blow
  • With respect to the classification leadership tables, they can be expanded as some have incomplete day by day leaders and just try to check the listed newspapers for the leaders on the missing days or try to find new newspapers
  • Create images of the yearly race route similar to those seen on the 1988 Giro d'Italia page or more recent Tour de France yearly articles
  • Double over the final standings sections (add the complete final standings for GC) and cross-reference with newspapers to make sure that each table looks as it does on the featured articles and no classifications were left out and unexplained (i.e. 1988 Giro d'Italia)
  • Ultimately the goal is to achieve FA status on all these yearly articles and make adjustments to each year's article to get them in line with the current FA articles we have
  • Review importance and quality of existing articles according to the WikiProject Cycling assessment department suggestions
  • Identify articles for creation
  • Identify articles for improvement to GA and FA status as well as lists for FL status
  • Recruit interested Wikipedians using the invite template {{subst:Wikipedia:WikiProject Cycling/Giro d'Italia task force/Invite}}.
  • Remove non-neutral statements from all articles, mostly in opposition or support of a rider.
  • Any articles that are within the scope of this project should be tagged with {{WikiProject Cycling|gdi=yes}}. This will automatically put the page in the appropriate categories. To set a different importance level use {{WikiProject Cycling|gdi=yes|gdi-imp=top/high/mid/low}}.

Sources to use for Expanding the Articles

Typically when writing an article it is good practice, especially with some of these sources, its a great idea to use the Wayback Machine to save the page or PDF that you're using to make sure that it will be there in case the original site shuts down for some reason (i.e. l'Unita). The sources are in English, unless otherwise noted. The sources for the newspapers are somewhat arranged in terms of reliability. Happy editing!

Websites

  • Bike Race Info (1909-Present)
  • Cyclingnews (1997-Present)
  • The link takes you to a page of previous winners, where year of each edition is a link to the homepage for that edition and you can access stage reports and previews from there
  • Mémoire du cyclisme (.eu) (1909-Present) (in French)

Newspaper and Magazine Archives

  • El Mundo Deportivo (1909-Present) (in Spanish)
  • La Stampa (1908-Present) (in Italian)
  • Il Littorale (1928-1944) (in Italian)
  • l'Unita (1920-Present) (in Italian)
  • Corrierre dello Sport) (1943-1972) (in Italian)
  • For whatever reason when you click the individual date of the article you want to select with this newspaper it won't load the page. So to bypass this follow these instructions: Find the page you want (i.e. 1954 May 10) so click on that link and it'll take you to a page saying it won't load the paper. Take a look at the url (for this example: http://dlib.coninet.it/?q=node/6&f=9616&p=1&c=1) and where it says '9616' is the entry for that day of the newspaper in their catalog. So place that '9616' in this link (http://dlib.coninet.it/bookreader.php?&c=1&f=00000&p=1#page/1/mode/1up) in place of the '00000' and then place that as the url and viola, you have the page you want to see (http://dlib.coninet.it/bookreader.php?&c=1&f=9616&p=1#page/1/mode/1up). Hopefully that is clear enough. This is a very well scanned source.

Structure

  • Infobox: Every article should have an infobox that shows the main information
  • Competitors/Teams: There should be something about the competitors. For this table, any information, no matter how little, is enough.
  • Race Overview: Every article should have a body of text that describes the race's events.
  • Stage Table: Virtually all Giro articles have tables that show which stage was won by which cyclist, but they should be in the right format, and sourced.
  • Classification Leadership Table: The leaders of the important classifications should be mentioned per stage, at least for the classifications that awarded jerseys. Sourcing is difficult here, so not needed for now. In early Giros, there was only the general classification, so this information can then be included in the stage table.
  • Final Standings: Virtually all Giro articles show the final general classification, but they should show all important classifications, and be sourced. Important are at least the classifications that awarded a jersey, and at least the top three should be shown, but preferably the top ten, but this depends on the available sources. The final should appear roughly like this when there are as many classifications.
  • For the earlier editions try to put all the finishers of the race, but the top 10 will suffice. Although in the long run all the finishers would be nice.
  • Classification Explanation: There should be a small explanation of how the classifications shown in the final results are calculated, and how the leader was identified
  • Doping:There should be a section covering doping positives in the race. The race started testing in 1968, so all races after that should have this section. Cyclisme Dopage has a general list of positives that were obtained during the race, but it is not comprehensive so one must check other sources as well. Use it as a basis to search in the above reliable sources sections to get proper references. In addition, do the best you can at finding when riders got tested, how frequently, method of selection, punishments, etc.
