Performance History

Ian Smith has achieved success with his own and other local ensembles such as the Tony Schilder Quartet and Concert Boulevard. He played with th SA Navy Band and has been the soloist with the UCT Big Band, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the CAPAB Band. Ian along with Prof Mike Campbell founded the Cape Jazz Orchestra. He has backed visiting international artists such as Pavarotti, Shirley Bassey and Liberace. His own quartet Virtual Jazz Reality was formed in 1990 and has received local and international acclaim.

Teaching

In 1990 Ian Smith joined SACS school as a music teacher/bandmaster and toured Europe with the school band.

Awards

  • Contribution to Performing Arts: Music from the Department of Cultural Affairs
  • Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated humanitarian services

Community Work

In 2008 Ian Smith was approached by the Department of Social Development to start a music project in the township of Delft. The aim of the project is to offer youth at risk of gangsterism, drugs an after-school programme to equip them with life skills.
