The University of San Francisco (USF) is a Jesuit Catholic university in San Francisco, California. The city's first university, USF was founded in 1855 as St. Ignatius Academy, a one-room schoolhouse with three students. Today its main campus spans 55 acres between the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park, with more than 10,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students enrolled in four schools (Law, Management, Education, and Nursing and Health Professions) and one college (Arts and Sciences). It strives to educate leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world. An urban university with a global perspective, USF offers students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals, and the values and sensitivity necessary to be men and women for others. USF draws from the cultural, intellectual, and economic resources of the San Francisco Bay Area and its location on the Pacific Rim to enrich and strengthen its educational programs.

About the Department of Rhetoric and Language

The Department of Rhetoric and Language focuses on ethical and effective communication in academic, civic, and professional contexts. Through its classes, service, and co-curricular activities, it advances the Jesuit ideal of eloquentia perfecta - reason and eloquence in writing, speaking, and literacy - and guides its students as they learn to engage critically with the texts that influence their beliefs, values and actions. The three divisions of the Department (Rhetoric and Composition, Public Speaking, and Academic English for Multilingual Students) stress all aspects of communication, literacy, and rhetoric.

The USF Gleeson Library provides access to more than 200 research databases. Its Digital Collections include the Printing and Graphic Arts Collection, the Rare Book Collection, the Manuscript Collection, Wasmann publications, Practicing Ignatian Pedagogy collection, the Albanian Catholic Bulletin, materials about WW2 Japanese American Relocation Centers, and Asia Pacific: Perspectives.

• Social justice reformers and reform movements/projects in the Jesuit Catholic tradition
• Social justice reformers or social reform movements and initiatives related, but not limited to the health sciences, library and information sciences, or the San Francisco Bay Area.
• Lesser known social justice reformers or social justice reform movements
• Ignatian/Jesuit educational traditions (e.g. humanism) and spirituality

This Visiting Scholars opportunity comes with a $350 honorarium.
