Wikipedia:University of Edinburgh/18th Month Report

Strategic Goal 1

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Outcomes

• The Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference 2017 was hosted by the University of Edinburgh's Learning, Teaching and Web Division on partnership with Wikimedia UK at the University of Edinburgh Business School on 6 July 2017.
• The Celtic Knot 2017 had 53 attendees with representatives from Wikimedia UK, Greek Wikipedia, Basque Wikipedia, Welsh Wikipedia & partners at Llên Natur, Wikimedia Nederland, Scots Gaelic Wikipedia, Wikimedia Norway, Wikimedia Ireland, Wikimedia Switzerland, Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia Estonia, Catalan Wikipedia, the Cornish Council, the Gaelic Language Team at the Scottish Government, the University of Glasgow, Queen's University Belfast, Edinburgh College, the Welsh Language Team at the Welsh Government, staff from the Language Technology Unit at Bangor University, staff from the University of Edinburgh's School for Literatures, Languages and Cultures, researchers from Dublin City University, Edinburgh University Library, Leeds University Library, the National Library of Wales and the National Library or Scotland.
• Storify of the day in images and tweets.
• 1070 tweets archived on TAGS
• Graphic representation of the Twitter conversation using #CelticKnot hashtag.
• 22 videos of the Celtic Knot conference sessions added to Media Hopper channel on Creative Commons licences.
• New Celtic Knot mailing list created.
• Eleven slide decks added to Wikimedia Commons.
• 72 images of the conference added to Wikimedia Commons.
• 4 blog articles arising from the conference so far:

Strategic Goal 2

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes

• Attended Copyright lecture and workshop given by Naomi Korn at the university on 13 June 2017.
• Attended Wikimedians in Residence meeting on 7 July 2017 discussing best practice and how to move things forward.
• Met with the University of Glasgow staff: Samantha Fiander (Knowledge Transfer and Communications Manager), Dr Gillian Fergie (Research Associate, Informing Healthy Public Policy Programme) and Linsay Gray from the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit with a view to them undertaking their first forays into sharing knowledge openly through the Wikimedia projects.
• Continued discussions with Navino Evans to simplify the process for data to be added to Wikidata, in bulk and in individual statement form.
• Wrote an article on Wikipedia in the Classroom on the University of Edinburgh's Teaching matters blog.
• Hosted the Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference on 6 July 2017 with a view to Celtic and Indigenous language communities being better supported. The hope is that from this initial event, we have engendered enough impetus and goodwill to continue this knowledge sharing in future years (potentially 2018 in Wales and 2019 in Norway based on correspondence following the event).
• Edited 21 videos from the Celtic Knot conference which have now been shared to the University of Edinburgh's Media Hopper channel with a view to surfacing the conference sessions.
• Davyth Hicks at ELEN (European Language Equality Network) has subsequently emailed to see of Regional and Minority Language Wikimedia projects can be better integrated into the ELEN Network and their newly developed ELEN digital working group.

Strategic Goal 3

To support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK.

Outcomes

• Met with Alex Chow, Lecturer in World Christianity MSc to discuss Wikipedia assignment platforms for use on the 2017/2017 World Christianity course.
• Confirmed workshop with Karen Gregory, Digital Sociology, who is scheduling an introductory Wikipedia workshop to take place as part of the course in October 2017 with a view to doing further work in Spring 2018.
• Confirmed with Felix Stein that Anthropology will be running a 200 word Wikipedia assignment in 2017/2018.
• Confirmed with James Loxley, professor of Early Modern Literature, that a AHRC-funded 'Being Human' editathon will take place in November 2017.
• Confirmed with Jane Macdonald, Centre for Design Informatics at the Edinburgh College of Art, that an editathon on 'Scottish Living Artists' will take place at the Fruitmarket Gallery in conjunction with the Centre for Design Informatics on Friday 24 November.
• Met with Dr. Michael Seery, Reader in Education at the School of Chemistry, on 3rd July 2017 to plan an Ada Lovelace Day event on 10 October 2017 focused on Women in Chemistry to be held at Kings Buildings and involving colleagues from the other sciences and School of Chemistry. He has also asked his postgraduate students to attend monthly Wiki Women in Red meetups at the School of Chemistry to work on articles ahead of the event in order to identify a bank of resources. He is also liaising with the Royal Society of Chemistry for a separate Wikipedia event to be held there.

Collections identified for potential future upload:

• Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator, has uploaded a test case of Thomas Jehu's PhD thesis to Wikisource during the History of Medicine editathon on 23 & 24 February 2017 and is looking to upload another PhD thesis at our next Wikisource workshop in Autumn 2017 as part of a short transcribe-a-thon.
• A WiR and Library proposal has been drafted and passed to colleagues at Library & University Collections.
  • Update 25/07: This is on hiatus. Kirsty Lingstadt (Head of Digital Library) has met with Jason Evans, Wikimedian in Residence at the National Library of Wales, on Friday 7 July 2017 to learn more about his particular residency with a view to seeing how GLAM residencies work.
• Paul Barnaby was to liaise with Navino Evans to see if Histropedia can be employed with the Our History site along with a Visual Editor plugin.
  • Update 25/07: Time and resources are not currently available to proceed with this planned improvement to the Our History site but content may be migrated across to Wikipedia in due course.
• We have been given permission to upload images where WW1 nurse orderly Ethel Moir is the creator from the Capital Collections website.
  • Update: Have uploaded one image to Ethel Moir's Wikipedia page on 12 May 2017 as part of International Nurses Day and am looking to upload more at Wiki Women in Red meetups in coming months ahead. **Update 25/07, this original image has been deleted from Commons as OTRS approval did not come through in time. 20 images from Ethel Moir's collections have been approved by Ethel's family so will upload this week and request urgent OTRS approval from Capital Collections.

• Arranged with Stephen Kaye on the Mastercard Scholarship Foundation to hold an African Alumni & Swahili editathon in December 2017 (to be followed up in September 2017).
• An editathon themed on Scottish Contemporary Artists will now be held in Friday 24th November 2017 with confirmed involvement from the School of Design Informatics and potential involvement from the History of Art course.
• Finalising preparations with Pauline Ward and Navino Evans about a Wikidata Showcase event at Repository Fringe 2017 - a 90 minute workshop will show how to add referenced verifiable data to Wikidata and how to add data in bulk working with the Wikidata plugin in Google Spreadsheets. A further 45 minute workshop will demonstrate how to get data out of Wikidata; querying, analysing and visualising it as part of a practical workshop. We have also now confirmed a 3rd workshop - how to build SPARQL queries - will also feature at the event.
• Liaising with Ewan Klein and Lorna Campbell around writing a Wikidata element to any new Open Data Policy (focused on 'how').
• Arranging to meet with James Loxley, Professor of Early Modern Literature, in early September 2017 to help facilitate an AHRC-funded 'Being Human' editathon in November 2017.
• Confirmed with Felix Stein at Social Anthropology about a Wikipedia editing assignment for 2017/2018.
• Confirmed with Karen Gregory for a Wikipedia workshop to take place in October 2017 on the Digital Sociology course with a view to further work in Spring 2018.
• Planning an Ada Lovelace Day event focused on Women in Chemistry and liaising with Michael Seery, Reader in Education at the School of Education, about supporting his postgraduate students to write articles on Women in Chemistry in the run up this event as well as another proposed event with the Royal Society of Chemistry. First planning meeting for Ada Lovelace Day 2017 was held on Monday 3rd July. Next one on 28 August.
• Continuing discussions about the use and implementation of Open Badges at the university. Met with Charlie Farley, Stuart Nicol and Jon Jack to discuss how they are currently being utilised at the university to see how a Wikimedia Open Badge could be incorporated. Creation of initial few designs can take place now use of a platform, Badgr, has been identified. Liaising with Richard Nevell at Wikimedia UK on next steps.
• Confirmed with Sophie Nicholls at Teeside University about doing an editathon and Train the Trainer events down there - dates now to be finalised as the next step.
• Discussing with Karen Howie at History, Classics and Archaeology about an archaeology-themed editathon to mark Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017 in conjunction with Sara Thomas's work at Dig It! and SLIC.
• Discussing with Tomas Sanders (Open Ed. intern) about a student History Society editathon as part of Black History Month and seeing if there is interest from Amy Burge at the Institute for Academic Development in combining this with a medieval-themed editathon following recent discussions about Wikipedia at the International Medieval Congress.
• Discussing with colleagues at Learning, Teaching and Web Services about holding a Wiki-Halloween event; possibly utilising the database of witches held at the university to create more content such as Margaret Aitken (the great witch of Balwearie)
• Collating use cases of Wikidata and preparing documentation with Navino Evans for how to add data to Wikidata, individually and in bulk.
• Continuing to produce materials to simplify process of working with Wikisource: the free digital library (pdf handouts, video tutorials etc.)
• Exploring how a Wiki MOOC could be implemented which builds on the work of Wikimedia France.
• Continuing to support colleagues at the University of Edinburgh's Digital Skills team to run their own Wikipedia training workshops.

• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Media Hopper now has 180 videos. 21 more have newly been uploaded as a result of the Celtic Knot 2017 conference.
• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Youtube now has accrued 14077 views of its 33 videos with 65 subscribers (Two thousand more views approx. than last month and 7 more subscribers than last month).
