Suspected sockpuppets

  • Vector2022SucksBalls (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki)

Vector2022SucksBalls was created at 14:32 on January 20, and within 5 minutes of being created the account made a user page protesting the existence of Vector 2022. There was apparently some vandalism that I can't see because the page was deleted, and the user was blocked by Bbb23 as a VOA with a username violation.

Lo an behold, Vector2022isTrash was created on 21 January at 16:47, and created an (apparently) anti-Vector2022 userpage six minutes later. It was deleted as an attack page by PhilKnight. After the first version of the userpage was deleted, the user re-created their userpage with an anti-Vector2022 protest message and gave a kitten to Vector2022SucksBalls.

That Vector2022isTrash was able to find Vector2022SucksBalls, knew how to give a kitten, and also created attack pages within a few minutes of opening their account that were apparently deleted makes me suspect that the two accounts are related.

I am requesting checkuser to confirm a technical connection between the two accounts, in light of the behavioral evidence presented above. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 17:59, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

With respect to I really really really do not want to have to process 20+ SPIs with various permutations of insults at the new skin, I get that, and there's a reason I didn't list basically every SPA here; the thing that sealed me coming here was the interaction between the two accounts. It is now apparent that they are not technically related, and I would like to thank Firefly for running the check, which wound up revealing the master of the sock reported here. Should this be moved to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Tortuga666, since that is the oldest master identified here? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 18:48, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If I may add to Red-tailed hawk’s comments, I have also noticed that several users (who had similar messages and may or may not be related to each other), including IWantTheOldInterfaceBack, Iwant2010vector, and Redesign is utterly awful have made comments on certain pages, including Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) and on userpages, that they all made accounts to change the format back and mentioned how bad the redesign is. ...seriously? Is it that hard to imagine that numerous people disliked the change and created accounts to use the old interface, and named their account after the thing that was on their mind at the moment they created it? Go ahead and investigate me though, I have nothing to hide. IWantTheOldInterfaceBack (talk) 18:19, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Howdy. This is my first and only account, I have a pretty static IP and regularly use Wikipedia so should be simple enough to verify. Redesign is utterly awful (talk) 19:14, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk, CheckUser, and/or patrolling admin comments

  • These two are Red X Unrelated, but I did find Tortuga666 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log) · investigate · cuwiki) which is confirmed to "Vector2022SucksBalls" and blocked as such (also NOTHERE to boot). That said, I will say that we will get a lot of throwaway accounts complaining about Vector 2022, either genuinely or in order to troll and waste time.
  • Can I please request that absent any exceptional circumstances, we do not report them to SPI as that would either be a regular waste of time, or giving the trolls exactly what they want. If they are disruptive they can be blocked for cause. I really really really do not want to have to process 20+ SPIs with various permutations of insults at the new skin. firefly ( t · c ) 18:24, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • +1 to Firefly. It's quite possible that a number of similar-looking accounts were created by various (unrelated) users unhappy with the new design who are "venting" with their usernames; this point has been raised at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Rollback of Vector 2022. I strongly discourage making accusations of sockpuppetry based only on usernames in this case. Any such accounts that engage in disruptive editing can be blocked for that, as necessary.
