Burj, -al

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget due to no consensus for the status quo. Opinions are about reasonably split between retargetting to Burj and deletion, and the arguments for both options are equally compelling. It's been relisted once without further input so I don't think it's worth prolonging this further. Normally in this situation I'd simply call it no consensus and move on, but that defaults to keep which is the one action nobody wants, so instead I'm going to call this "no consensus" but retarget it as this is a lesser action than deletion. Thryduulf (talk) 18:57, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know where this comes from or if it's a likely search term. — Gorthian (talk) 22:50, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • I see that I created it with the line "getting rid of red link"....but I cannot recall where that red link was,Huldra (talk) 22:54, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I know, I couldn't figure that out, either. Sorry you can't remember; I was curious! But six years of editing will do that. Thanks. — Gorthian (talk) 22:59, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actually, I went and looked through my edits at the time...and it has to do with my User:Huldra/Morris-list: look at village #236, Morris refer to that as "Burj, -al" (see Morris, 2004, p. xix village #236). So the redir is wrong, it should go to Al-Burj, Ramle! Huldra (talk) 23:07, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh, so it's a form of sorting for different villages? How is it used? — Gorthian (talk) 23:22, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know what you mean with sorting in this context? ....but Burj is a relatively common name in the Middle East, and such names have a tendency to get mixed up. (Just look at Talk:Tira, Israel for mix-ups of the Tira-places, or Talk:Hadatha for ditto, on the Hadata-places) Huldra (talk) 23:30, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • (I refactored our comments with bullets to make them easier to read.) The problem is, this redirect could apply to many titles on Wikipedia. In the form it is, it won't get used as a link in an article, nor is it a helpful search term because of the odd punctuation. I thought it was perhaps for sorting in a category, like some name pages are (lastname, firstname is a common redirect for name lists). — Gorthian (talk) 23:44, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, basically it was a redir made because Morris uses that specific spelling on his lists of villages, Huldra (talk) 23:47, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am not sure what the above jargon means, but if it results in "Burj, -al" being redirected to Burj: then I agree, Huldra (talk) 20:04, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is it intended to be "Burj, al-", like "Tower, The"? --BDD (talk) 22:22, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I believe so, Huldra (talk) 23:27, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. If this indeed involves both inverting the term "al-Burj" and misplacing the hyphen, it's a pretty unlikely search term. Could the hyphen have ended up there due to confusion with Arabic, which is right-to-left? Perhaps, but unless this type of error is systematic, I'm not comfortable keeping this kind of thing. --BDD (talk) 22:58, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. It's true that not everything requires CamelCase, being unnecessary is not a reason to delete a redirect. In this case it's harmless, unambiguous, used and deletion would bring no benefits - all reasons to keep. Thryduulf (talk) 14:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This search revealed the following matches: a character each in The Fall of Hyperion (novel), Black Swan (comics), an organisation in the Netherlands (see Mohamed Rabbae), an Uzbek band (see Pakhtakor Tashkent FK), and a German person (wife of Albert Göring). (Eubot) implausible typo and weird capitalization. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Champion (talkcontribs) 06:15, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • I wouldn't consider the mSA redirects to be implausible or weird. They're redirects for micropolitan statistical areas, typically abbreviated as μSA. This appears to be an attempt to make those abbreviations easier for people to type on a standard keyboard, but I'm not aware of them being used this way elsewhere. - Eureka Lott 16:28, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep all per EurekaLott but some of them aren't redirected to the micropolitan SAs when they exist, but that can be corrected given they are kept. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:47, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all - I agree with EurekaLott that these are probably meant to make μSA titles easier to find, but they have the unfortunate side effect of making every one of them ambiguous with metropolitan statistical areas, which are abbreviated MSA. That makes it more difficult to find the intended target, which hits WP:RFD#D1 and D2. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 22:58, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • It seems like a slight stretch that "mSA" would ordinarily be confused with "MSA" (capitalization matters). It's possible that a few folks won't be able to handle the supposed ambiguity. I think it boils down to the utility of these redirects vs. the few who might be confused about them. My hunch goes with the former. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 00:06, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all. The contrast between µSA and MSA means that mSA is essentially WP:XY. Deryck C. 11:46, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Thryduulf (talk) 14:53, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • The supposed ambiguity doesn't exist in most cases, as it would only occur when changes are made; micropolitan and metropolitan areas do not simultaneously exist for the same place. Usually where ambiguity exists, both would be on the same page, otherwise it could be resolved with hatnotes as is usually the case with similar but not identical names. Peter James (talk) 23:39, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think that would be an argument for keeping Fort Morgan Micropolitan Statistical Area, which specifically discusses the µSA, but not the rest. Deryck C. 11:39, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
      • It isn't a reason for keeping (there's already one, that if we're keeping the "µSA" versions then "mSA" should also be kept for being more accessible) but it invalidates the "XY" and RFD#D1 or D2 argument for deleting (unless you can find any for which both µSA and MSA have existed and would point to different targets). If a redirect can only point to X we should point it to X, if it can point to either X or X (or to X or Y, where Y redirects to X) we should also point it to X. Peter James (talk) 15:32, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have to go with delete as an invented WP:NEO. I'm still unable to find a single example of this formation used elsewhere. - Eureka Lott 15:53, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'd assumed that these were occasionally used, but checking the first of these I've found occasional abbreviation to "MICRO" or "Micro", and one website uses "MISA", but the only "mSA" I found was a metropolitan area mentioned on the same page as a micropolitan area. The µSA versions are not always possible to type, but as there are other alternatives already in use, I don't object to deletion of the mSA versions as obscure and possibly misleading. Doesn't seem to be an alternative name for the target, so could be misleading and possibly a WP:NPOV violation. Steel1943 (talk) 05:34, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete or write a generic article it seems the institute does have such a center [1], but so does the Barshop Institute (see Barshop Institute#Research), Greenwich Hospital (Connecticut) (see Greenwich Hospital (Connecticut)#Pictures), NCH Healthcare System (NCH Healthcare System#History), and also google finds the following University of Copenhagen, Hartford HealthCare (presumably Connecticut), National Council on Aging (based in Virginia), Providence Health Care in British Columbia, St Peter's Hosptial, Hamilton, Ontario, Beverly Hospital, Dancers, Massachusetts, Carillion Clinic various locations in Western Virginia, and others. This suggests that it is a rather generic name, so unless there is significant coverage of any of them (I haven't found any) or there is a general article that can be written (I'm not sure) then deletion is probably the best. Thryduulf (talk) 12:39, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: I created the redirect thinking it was an alternative name, but [2] suggests that Center for Healthy Aging is a parent department of the Stein Institute. • @Davey2010: G8 didn't apply. The reason the target didn't exist is because you tagged it part way through a round robin move I was performing per a request at WP:RM/TR. Delete. This is implausible, especially since these are not the dates of birth and death for anyone listed at the target. -- Tavix (talk) 01:48, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. There are 44 redirects to this target. Nobility do seem to get rather a lot of redirects: not many of them very illuminating, I should think, such as Ernst August (VI) of Hanover, Prince Ernst August (VI) of Hanover, Prince Ernst August of Hanover (heir apparent) let alone every possible style or handle. He is Ernst or Ernest August or Augustus, Prince, Prinz, Duke and King (but not Grof or Kaiser) of or von or Von Brunswick, Cumberland, Hanover, Hannover and Teviotdale, both the VI and the I of Hanover and Hannover, etc. I have doubted the value of these combinatorics for many years but I appear to be in a minority on thinking them more trouble than they're worth. • Delete Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover (1629-1698), Ernest Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1674-1728) and Ernest Augustus I, Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1688–1748)) all lived (partially) within this time frame so it's not a useful disambiguator. I'd like to try to get consensus on what we do with these ones with "o tilde" on them instead of "o double acute". They could kept as {{R from misspelling}} but they could be deleted as WP:RFD#D2 nonsense / WP:RFD#D8 obscure/novel synonym. It seems unlikely to me that someone on an English-language keyboard will go out of their way to find an O tilde but not an O double acute; on the other hand not everyone searching English Wikipedia uses an English-language keyboard, and some may use a keyboard with an easz-to-type O tilde but not O double acute. But primarily this is not a question of searching by typing, within Wikipedia or without; more likely such an error if it exists in the wild will have been copy-pasted into some search engine (WP's or another's); but that search engine will likely find the correct form anyway as it will do its own conversion into some canonical form when searching. This particular one has had three hits in ninety: one site I could find that uses it is this Hungarian wesite, foldhivatal.hu ("Land Registry")/ I can't really imagine why a Hungarian website would make this substitution but perhaps there was a "technical limitation" as seemed to prevent "o double acute" in Wikipedia in the early days (see ES of 2005 edit to Gödöllo): "Gödöllo moved to Gödöllő: preventing technical limitations don't exist any more"). Si Trew (talk) 01:14, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. 'o' instead of 'ő' makes sense as a simplification on English keyboards, as does 'o' instead of 'õ'. Replacing 'ő' by 'õ' does not - they are different characters, and in different alphabets. Narky Blert (talk) 02:01, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(eubot) There are a number of redirects to this Hungarian place, which I have checked and rctatted where necessary: this one's created from a redirect that itself is an incorrect spelling ("Hódmezövásárhely") and substituted "oe" for the Germanic umlaut it doesn't have. WP:RFD#D8. Si Trew (talk) 01:00, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment as you can see, there will be a lot of these on the general pattern: incorrect spelling of "ö" for "ő", which is completely forgivable; thence the substitution of "oe" for "ö", in a game of Chinese whispers. The same will probably apply with "Hungarumlaut" letter "ű" → "ü" → "ue". I'll happily combine but hesitate to do so for different targets. Si Trew (talk) 01:04, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(eubot) Delete asWP:RFD#D8. These were created as variations from the Rs at Gödöllö and Gödöllő, Hungary, the first of which I have marked as {{R from misspelling}} (The last letter is correctly "ő", with a "Hungarumlaut", not "ö") and {{R from name and country}}. See that Eubot thinks Hungarian letter "ö" should be transliterated "oe", but "ő" as plain "o". These are not merely incorrect spellings like "Gödöllö" but nonsense ones. No internal links, five hits in ninety days between them. Si Trew (talk) 00:24, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
