The result of the discussion was: Textbook WP:NFCC#8 violation. No prejudice to restoration if the article is significantly expanded to explicitly discuss this image in-depth -FASTILY 05:02, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot see how this helps in readers' comprehension and visual understanding of the article SpongeBob SquarePants. The article is about the show and not the characters. There is already the list article, "List of SpongeBob SquarePants characters," featuring another (but better) fair use file File:Nickelodeon SpongeBob SquarePants Characters Cast.png. This fair use file in question fails WP:NFCCP, #8. Removal of this does not deprive Wikipedia; readers are expected to go to List of SpongeBob SquarePants characters if they want to see the characters. Keep Characters are indeed a focus of the article; the section "Premise" describes the characters and setting in detail, since an understanding of the characters and setting is crucial to understanding the show. The show's characters are modeled after undersea animals in a distinct, cartoonish way. The setting is also designed in a distinct way, with gradient backgrounds and "flower clouds" rendered in a painterly style. This image shows all of these key elements, so I believe that the character image is important for readers' comprehension and visual understanding. Squittens (talk) 04:15, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Squittens we already have the list article List of SpongeBob SquarePants characters for characters, and people should just go to that article to see the appearance of the characters. Also, would it be wise to use the image in the list article for the section itself (just only add another NFUR table), instead of uploading another unfree image? JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 09:19, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Keep - A reader looking for a quick rundown of the show will expect to see a character image, since it's a character-driven, hand-drawn show with iconic designs. There's a lot of text in the article that directly talks about the characters as opposed to solely production info. Also, I personally think both images aid their respective pages, as the list image has each characters in a row for easy identification purposes, while the main page image illustrates more of the painting style that the show uses whenever there's a closeup or freeze-frame. FunhausFrank (talk) 04:00, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@FunhausFrank: the presence of both images of the same subject (the nine characters) leans to violation of WP:NFCC: the minimal number of files of the same subject. It is wise to use the same image from the list in the same article itself, just adding another NFUR table. We should not have two images, only one is sufficient. • Delete. Textbook example of WP:NFLISTS, point 4: "If another non-free image of an element of an article is used elsewhere within Wikipedia, referring to its other use is preferred over repeating its use on the list and/or including a new, separate, non-free image." A second non-free media file inherently violates WP:NFCC#3a; the image at List of SpongeBob SquarePants characters suffices. plicit 02:57, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I found a photograph (direct link) of Dorner that could be used as a free alternative. It was published in the LAPD newsletter, in which case {{PD-CAGov}} would likely apply. Ixfd64 (talk) 19:49, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: I found a cropped version at USA Today (direct link) that has an even higher resolution. Ixfd64 (talk) 19:59, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
