Nominator's rationale: Given that we have Category:Video games by country of setting, this is a non-defining characteristic for the categories it contains. UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:47, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

  • Relisting comment @UnitedStatesian, Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars, and MattLongCT: after the procedural oppose of User:Fayenatic london I have taken the liberty to add the following categories to the nomination:
- Marcocapelle (talk) 20:37, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What has "uninhabited islands" got to do with this CFD? Isn't the distinction between an island and a continent arbitrary anyway? These categories may not add category clutter on articles, but they do add unnecessary complexity to the category structure and in particular are an example of the sort of thing that impedes the use of category intersection as they cause categories such as Category:Films set in Oxford and Category:Films set in Rhodesia to be in Category:Islands. DexDor (talk) 20:11, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I mentioned the "uninhabited islands" part of this hierarchy to make sure nobody proposes nuking the entire structure as non-defining.
Can you find a more convincing example of a category intersection problem caused by these categories? The examples that you gave are both within Category:Films set in the United Kingdom (because "British Empire" is within "UK") – which is within Category:British Isles, so they would will still be within Category:Islands anyway, even if these nominated "fiction by island country" categories are deleted. – Fayenatic London 23:24, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There may be more than one problem in the category structure. Articles about Rhodesia should not generally be in Category:British Isles (and hence in Category:Europe). DexDor (talk) 15:29, 13 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm inclined to support this, even though it would make this group of categories inconsistent with the parent Islands hierarchy. A category explanation should then state the scope as fiction for which the island location of setting is WP:Defining. – Fayenatic London 23:24, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The defining characteristics of an article such as Tumbledown include that it's a film about the Falklands War; that it's set on an island is incidental (e.g. the article doesn't use the word "island"). It wouldn't be put directly in Category:Islands in fiction so it shouldn't be put indirectly in that category.  Similarly, few, if any, of the films in Category:Films set in Dublin (city) belong under Category:Islands. A country may have many characteristics (e.g. being a monarchy, being in the EU, being in the G20), but in most cases that's not directly relevant to  novels etc set in it - e.g. Germany is categorized in Category:German-speaking countries and territories, but we don't put every film set in Germany in a Films-set-in-German-speaking-countries etc category; we categorize by more relevant characteristics (including the language of the film). The result of the discussion was: merge Category:Theories of economics to Category:Schools of economic thought. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:39, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:OVERLAPCAT, we already have a category like this, it is called Category:Schools of economic thought. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:13, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:24, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Propose deleting Category:Red Arrows pilots (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: A single use small cat used in a redirect for a former pilot that flew with the Red Arrows aerobatic team, not a particularly defining category and we dont normally categorise pilots lower than service level and not at unit or team level. MilborneOne (talk) 13:51, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:C1 as essentially empty: one redirect to an article that's already in Category:Red Arrows. (No objection if anyone wants to create a hidden redirect category.) RevelationDirect (talk) 23:00, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. I am personally not sure this is a good idea, but consensus is clear. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:19, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: up/downmerge, these are two categories with the same scope, nicely illustrated by the fact that the target is parent category and subcategory at the same time. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:23, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support This is the typical format for ethnicity categories. Dimadick (talk) 09:37, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support -- The converse to this is Category:Moroccan people of Berber descent, though I suspect that the distinction is largely one of language, rather than strictly of ethnicity. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:00, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • In fact the converse is Category:Berber Moroccans. But Berber Moroccans may make more sense than Berber descent since Berbers were the more original inhabitants of Morocco. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:54, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Propose renaming Category:Health-related timelines by country to Category:Healthcare-related timelines
Nominator's rationale: All the articles are timelines of healthcare Rathfelder (talk) 10:22, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, all articles of this category have "healthcare" in the title. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:10, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
