Tiscali DSL (88.108.0.0/14)

The abuser in this case is the permabanned editor Light current (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). He edits from a Tiscali UK DSL account, which means that his IP is assigned from the entire /14 range listed above. (Apparently, the ISP Tiscali is assigned the 88.104.0.0/13, but Light current's socks appear to be confined to the top half of those addresses.)

More recent attacks

More recent attacks have come from a new Tiscali range. Tiscali nominally owns the entire /12 pool from 79.64.0.0 - 79.79.255.255 (79.64.0.0/12), but so far attacks have only come from a smaller subset of those addresses—typically something in the 79.76.0.0/16 range.

This is not an exhaustive list. Note that because this is a pool of IP addresses used by Tiscali's DSL customers, some IP addresses may have non-Light-current edits. Since all of the IP addresses listed here share the same WHOIS info, I'll provided the full {{ipvandal}} info just once:

IP addresses that have made only Light current edits between January 1, 2007 and the current time (02:24, 10 July 2007 (UTC)) are marked with a * in the first column. Also noted are addresses which have been used for personal attacks (attack), admin harrassment (admin), edit warring (war - usually on Ref Desk policy pages), vandalism (vandal), and trolling (troll).

Sockpuppet accounts

This is not an exhaustive list. Most are sleeper accounts, created and held until autoconfirmed to allow Light current to engage in pagemove vandalism (Pagemove), personal attacks (Attacks), to attack an admin who has enforced his ban (Admin), or to circumvent semiprotection (Semi) to prosecute an edit war.

Discussion

This editor was permanently banned by the community in February 2007, following a long history of persistent incivility, edit warring, trolling, and personal attacks. He had received several prior warnings and blocks dating back to February of 2006. After his permanent ban, Light current created the sockpuppet account SlipperyHippo (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) in early March which he used to continue editing. This received a winking acceptance among the involved admins, on the condition that he keep his nose clean. Following a resumption of trolling and vandalism (see SlimyCroc (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) for one example), the SlipperyHippo account was permanently blocked on April 18; all subsequent Light current socks are now blocked on sight.

Since his ban, Light current has engaged in extensive sockpuppetry, including the created of 'aged' or 'sleeper' sockpuppets for the purpose of circumventing semiprotection and to engage in pagemove vandalism. His edits now largely revolve around the various Wikipedia Reference Desks, particularly the Science and Miscellaneous Desks. He also attempts to insert himself into discussions of policy, which has led to the semiprotection – and occasional full protection – of Wikipedia:Reference desk/guidelines (edit | [[Talk:Wikipedia:Reference desk/guidelines|talk]] | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) and the associated talk page.

Abuse (including pagemove vandalism and various sorts of incivility and trolling) often targets Wikipedia administrators in general as well as editors who have enforced his block in particular.

The lists of addresses and usernames above are by no means complete, they are only a representative sample.

Great work, ToaT. I hope someone can get to the bottom of this for us. I'd be happy to spend some time contributing more of his socks/IPs to the list if required, but I'm not sure there is anything to be gained by that. Rockpocket 23:00, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
