I made changes per my suggestion – I dropped in a note – about the place of Denisovans in Human evolution. If that works, we could copy those changes to the other article in the DYK. Please take a look. 7&6=thirteen () 12:34, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Looks good to me! --valereee (talk) 12:46, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
I'll take it there. Cheers. 7&6=thirteen () 14:39, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Too many cemeteries and burials

Dear Valereee and Cwmhiraeth, we really need to space out the Russian cemetery hooks a lot more. We currently have 139 approved hooks, so we can afford to run them once a week (or more) rather than every few days. I returned the double hook that had been moved to Prep 2 to WP:DYKNA for later promotion, as Prep 3 already has another one of them. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:56, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Yoninah, that's perfect, it gets a musical hook out so that Halca can move in and the spec occ hook replace the Halca hook! --valereee (talk) 19:57, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Prep 5

Hi, I wonder if I could ask you to stop placing these sexual-innuendo nature hooks in the quirky slot. Quirky means light, different, unusual, funny. For the same reason, I've often been told not to run deviant-sex hooks in the last slot, no matter how quirky they seem to me. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:03, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Wow, never occurred to me that there was anything sexual about this, as it's a pea crab and a slipper limpet. I assume they can't reproduce together. I just thought it was a quirky bit of interesting nature lore. The fact the pea crab's lifecycle involves something that affects its host's ability to reproduce doesn't seem remotely sexual or sexually deviant to me; it's just "Wow, no, I didn't know that! How interesting!" If someone is asking us not to put this kind of hook into the quirky slot -- for no reason other than the fact someone might think of it as remotely sexual -- I'd want to argue with them about it. That just seems kind of...well, I hate to use the word silly, but it certainly seems hypersensitive to anything that could be remotely called sexual. --valereee (talk) 22:12, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
Well, you promoted a hook with a similarly raunchy angle only 4 sets before (now in Queue 1). We see stuff like this in the April Fools set; I personally would never highlight it by putting it in the quirky slot.
I'd also like to mention that you should feel free to edit hooks after you promote them. Often the nominator isn't familiar with DYK style of putting the target article in the front of the hook, or there are too many blue links. It doesn't help that many of these hooks are reviewed by editors who know even less than the nominator. Here is an example of fixing hooks after promotion. Best, Yoninah (talk) 22:43, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, I've been wondering about how much editing I can do, and I've been reluctant to do it without pinging nom and reviewer to the talk page. I'm building this set today with the intention of spending tomorrow morning doing a re-review of each of the hooks. Not sure that's the most efficient way to do it, but trawling through the approved noms over and over didn't seem efficient either, so I'm giving this a try. Advice appreciated.
Re: Calma glaucoides. There is nothing inherently sexual or even raunchy about an anus. It's how an organism removes food waste from its body. This an organism that doesn't require what most people would think was an essential organ for any organism bigger than a cluster of cells. To me this seems inherently quirky, just as it would if it didn't need a means of taking nutrients in. I'm sorry, I just don't see this as in any way raunchy. It's just interesting. I'm totally not trying to be obtuse; if there is past discussion of this that can make it clear to me, I want to go through it. This just seems like interesting zoology. --valereee (talk) 22:58, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
No, I don't think there is previous discussion about it. I'm just hypersensitive about running language like this in the quirky slot.
And in general, I don't put nature hooks in the quirky slot unless they are really exceptional. If they're good hooks, they run in the middle of the set. If they have a good hook and a good image, they go to the image slot.
Thank you, this is a much better quirky. I moved the 2nd nature hook in the set on to Prep 6. Best, Yoninah (talk) 23:33, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
You're the expert here. I'm totally willing to follow your lead at this point. I'll try to avoid reproductive and waste elimination hooks in the quirky slot for now, reserving the right to revisit discussion when I've got more experience. :D --valereee (talk) 23:38, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
Two female singer hooks? --valereee (talk) 08:36, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
Not really same topic but close: today we have a Japanese voice artist because it's her birthday, fine, but do we need another one (Halca) tomorrow? And is simply Halca even a good article name? It could be anything, a plant, a dish, a poem, you name it. (Was moved by JHunterJ, for "precision", as usual.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:01, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

Immaculate Conception

Just wanted to say that this hook promotion is a classic example of what I answered you on my talk page, about why it takes so long to build a prep set. The hook you promoted with the image is not that good. The hook you suggest is better. In such a case, I would have continued the discussion on the nomination page before promoting anything. After I worked out with the nominator what exactly can be promoted (the good hook or the bad hook), I would promote accordingly (yes image slot or no image slot). Because now, if the answer to your query is negative at WT:DYK, you're going to move the weak hook out of the image slot and risk hurting the nominator's feelings after they've seen it there.

Take your time building sets. You can stop at the end of the day and continue the next, and nothing will happen to them. And if someone (me, Cwmhiraeth) does add a hook you didn't plan on including, just move it to the next set and put in the one you want. The main thing is that the hooks you promote shouldn't be subject to question by other editors. Yoninah (talk) 11:22, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

Got it, ask questions first, shoot later. :D --valereee (talk) 11:29, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, wait, are you talking about the image hook? I didn't promote that one, or Lady Ponce, or the Taylor Swift (which made a second female pop singer), or the Molniya orbit, which made a second military hook. :D --valereee (talk) 12:18, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
Facepalm Facepalm Mea culpa. I neglected to check the page history. You did good, commenting at WT:DYK on the hook promoted by someone else. But my point about spending too much time still applies :) Yoninah (talk) 13:03, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, lol no worries! For a minute there I was thinking, "Why did I promote that...?" because I've actually been trying to do what you suggested for the past few days -- asking questions at the nom review while I'm looking for a hook, then moving on to the next nom as I look for the next hook. I've even started trying to remember to start my questions with, "Came here to promote, but I've got a question..." as I've seen you doing and which seems to me is more likely to get someone's attention than a question from what looks like a random drive-by crank. And I guess the other thing I could have done, and maybe it would be more productive, was move that hook to a later prep so that a promoter who actually likes the hook could work with it. Which I think I may do with Taylor Swift. --valereee (talk) 13:10, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Zhang Dongju

On 7 June 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Zhang Dongju, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Zhang Dongju, Chen Fahu, and J.-J. Hublin discovered that a fossil jaw from Baishiya Cave belonged to the first known Denisovan outside Siberia and the first known human on the Tibetan Plateau? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Zhang Dongju. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Zhang Dongju), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Question

No Vacancy Lounge

Hi again! You helped with the Nostrana article recently. I was curious, do nightlife articles interest you as well, or more just food/restaurant content? Curious because I'm considering nominating Holocene (Portland, Oregon) and No Vacancy Lounge for Good article status after they receive copy edits from the Guild of Copy Editors. Your review of Nostrana was very helpful and thorough, so I was wondering if you might have any feedback on either article. If not, no worries, just figured I'd ask, and I'll still keep you in mind for restaurant articles. Either way, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:09, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Another Believer, defunct nightlife articles interest me. I think I may have done such a review for you once before -- a gay bar called Three Sisters or something like that? If you nom them, let me know, and if I have time I'll help! I've got an article at GA myself right now, though, and another one I'm prepping for FA so have at peer review, so depending on whether anyone picks one of those up I could get busy fast. --valereee (talk) 10:56, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
Valereee, Oh! I did not realize you had reviewed Three Sisters Tavern. Very cool! I will let you know. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:04, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Actually, the copy edit for NVL is done, so I've nominated No Vacancy Lounge for Good status. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:13, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Not defunct, but I've nominated Holocene (Portland, Oregon) as well. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:09, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
Another Believer, sorry, wasn't ignoring you! I've suddenly become super busy as I've been taking on a new role at DYK, and there's a steep learning curve on top of a fair workload as I try to improve my skills there. It's pretty likely that I won't have much time or mental energy for GA reviews for the short term, I'm afraid! --valereee (talk) 11:39, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
Valereee, No problem at all! You had asked to let you know if I nominated either, so that's all I was doing. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:42, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

Help With My Article

Hello Valereee , I'm not sure if this is the place to ask or if requesting a specific user is allowed, but you've been so helpful and communicative that I thought I'd try. I have more information to add to my article, 1963 Freedom Ballot, but I feel I could improve the flow of what I already have before adding to it. I also wanted to know what to do if I can't find a non-licensed image. Most images I've found belong to a Matt Herron and The Image Works. Is it fine to leave out an image if there are none? Thank you! --MalachiReschke (talk) 19:25, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

MalachiReschke, hi! This is a fine place to ask for help. You can work on the article in any way that makes sense to you. Improve the flow first, add more information first, it's up to each editor to decide how exactly to do their work. If you want to put it up for DYK, though, that has to be done within seven days of the date it was moved to main space, so that would be this coming Sunday. The article does NOT have to be perfect by then; it just needs to fulfill DYK requirements, with which I'm very familiar, and it likely already does fulfill requirements.
Articles don't have to have images; many don't, usually because there's no free-use image available. You can use a non-free image for some articles in some situations, but it's very limited. There's information at Wikipedia:Image use policy.
Hm, looks like Herron makes his photos free for educators in an effort to improve understanding of the civil rights movement, so it's possible he'd be willing to donate one to Wikipedia for this article. You can always ask. It's probably a long shot, but I've gotten multiple photos uploaded just by asking. His contact page is here. If you want to approach him, explain that you're a volunteer working on civil rights articles for Wikipedia, give him a link to the article (I always tell people that if they understandably are reluctant to click on a link sent by a stranger, they can google the article; almost all WP articles come up on the first page of a search of their title), that WP isn't allowed to use purchased photos because of our licensing, and that uploading is fast, free, and easy, though he would have to register at Commons, but that's fast, free and easy, too. You might actually want to upload some of your own photos yourself first at Wikimedia Commons so you can be familiar with the process here and then click on "Upload file" on the left side of the page. --valereee (talk) 11:33, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for the advice, I'll follow the steps you provided and see what I can do. Thanks again! --MalachiReschke (talk) 15:08, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

DYK credit lines

BTW, when you add the "DYKmake" lines for the last slot, if there is no nominator, please delete the line that says: * {{DYKnom|Example|Nominator}}. Otherwise someone else will have to do that. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 11:57, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Yoninah, so sorry, I thought I was checking for that! --valereee (talk) 17:49, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

WCU Updates...

So I'm working on clarifying the citation on the WCU edit I made. I don't understand how to properly do it. I also feel like it's being taken down inappropriately anyways as that's what everyone refers to it as once they've graduated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wcu199930342 (talkcontribs) 14:38, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Wcu199930342, and welcome to Wikipedia! The source doesn't seem to support your assertion -- it calls Rice the Harvard of the South, and doesn't seem to mention WCU at all?
Assertions on Wikipedia need to come from reliable sources. You can find more information about those here: WP:Reliable. Whether alumns refer to it that way isn't something WP can use to prove an assertion. --valereee (talk) 14:42, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Posts on hook wording at WT:DYK

Hi, in reference to your recent posts on hook wording in Prep 1 and Prep 4, I'd like to ask you to consider a standard format for a posting. Name the article in question in the subhead, provide the current hook for easy reference, and then ping the nominator, reviewer, and promoter. It appears that in that long discussion about the crab in Macau, the nominator was never pinged to participate; the nominators in the prep 1 just found there way here, also without a ping. Here is an example:

Prep 4:Crab in Macau

  • ... that researchers discovered a new species of freshwater crab, genus Nanhaipotamon, in Macau, one of the most densely-populated regions on Earth?
@Bubbleleg96: @DannyS712: @Cwmhiraeth:
Not clear from hook how Macau being densely populated has any relation to discovery of a new species? (etc.)
Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:52, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
@Yoninah:@DannyS712: @Cwmhiraeth:
With so many people living in Macau and the city being a prime tourist destination, one would assume that researchers or citizens would have discovered the new species just by chance a long time ago. That it happened only last year shows how there are still lots of things to explore and discover where we least expect them and that many people do not really care for their immideate environment.
Hope that clarifies the issue Bubbleleg96 (talk) 6:32, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, thanks, that was really stupid of me. I'm sorry! Will do in future. --valereee (talk) 10:49, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Daniella van Graas

On 18 June 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Daniella van Graas, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that spokesmodel Daniella van Graas thinks she has been largely typecast as a model, but wishes to gain 20 kilograms (44 lb) and play a Monster? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Daniella van Graas. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Daniella van Graas), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

A heads-up

Hi, since you, Cwmhiraeth and me are the ones primarily promoting hooks, and Cwmhiraeth has a lot of approved nominations which she is unable to promote herself, please try to promote one of them at least in every other set, if not every set. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 20:51, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Yoninah, will do! I do generally try and pick one of her nature hooks if I can fit it in -- if I don't already have another nature/science hook, that is, or I don't need a long hook as most of hers are pretty short. I think I didn't put one into the set I was working on today was because it needed a quirky. --valereee (talk) 20:57, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. Yoninah (talk) 21:09, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
I didn't put the poop song in the quirky, btw! :D --valereee (talk) 00:07, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
Whoever did, I think they made the right decision! Yoninah (talk) 11:55, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, lol! I'd have totally put it in the quirky but I felt like you'd consider it an 'earthy' hook! :D --valereee (talk) 17:51, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
Yes, but readers like this type of stuff. Yoninah (talk) 18:47, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
When building prep sets I like to concentrate on the oldest nominations. Just now, in the top third of the approved nominations page there is an accumulation of hooks that I have reviewed and approved but cannot thus promote. I hope you will be able to prioritise these when doing promotions. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:22, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Cwmhiraeth, thanks! I've been starting at the top and going down. I usually do all the bios first, or all the non-bios, then start back through. (Advice welcome and appreciated!) I do always watch to see if you or Yoninah have nominated or approved a particular hook; for one thing, I know that any hook and/or article you two have created or passed is likely to be in very good shape! I usually skip over because the set already has an X hook, or already has too many Y hooks, or because even though it's been promoted, there's still discussion going on. Please leave me a message if you see me pass over something I shouldn't have, I want very much to be working with you and not against you! --valereee (talk) 17:53, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
ETA for both of you: I am nearly impossible to offend. I never assume questions are criticism, so asking me "Why didn't you promote hook X when you were loading set Y" is never going to bend me out of shape. I consider well-intentioned feedback a gift, even when it smarts. Tell me what I'm doing wrong, and I'll take the critique at face value and try to improve. --valereee (talk) 18:05, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
That's fine. It's just that I don't mind doing some extra reviews to whittle away at the backlog, but I don't like doing that if it means the approved nominations will have to wait longer than they otherwise would. I am always delighted to see that other people are filling prep sets, because then I can get on with something else (I like writing articles best). Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:12, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

All-Around Editor Award
Dear Valereee,

I'm admiring you for contributing a whole toolbox of talents to DYK: reviewing, new hook proposals, article editing, and image cropping! Thank you for making DYK a better place! Best, Yoninah (talk) 12:11, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Wow, thanks, Yoninah! I was literally wondering this morning whether I were being disruptive by querying already-promoted hooks at talk; while I'm doing it to avoid someone ending up calling something out when it's already on the main page, that maybe I should dial it back a bit. I appreciate the vote of confidence and all the help you're giving me. Thanks for the templating that crop, btw...wasn't sure whether I'd break something if I put a second image template into the nom. --valereee (talk) 14:12, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
I think "if you see something, say something". I often see errors and think, "I'll just let them slide; no one will notice", and then an administrator goes and makes the very same change after the hook is in queue or on the main page. Yoninah (talk) 09:42, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Lee v Ashers

I note your comments on Lee v Ashers and I have added a source confirming the illegality of same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland. I also note that you moved the DYK hook back a few days? Can I ask why you did that as it was not related to the hook? Furthermore as your concerns have been fixed, please can you put it back to where it was? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:46, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey, The C of E! That source is using the term 'illegal' in the way journalists often do, but they're using it sloppily. From our article on gay marriage in NI, it looks like sources are saying it's not legally recognized, which isn't the same as illegal. I moved the DYK because the prep was second in line to be queued, all queues were empty, the article needed a copyedit, and I was getting in the car for an all-day drive, so I knew I wasn't going to be able to get to it myself yesterday and didn't want it to be sent to queue and possibly end up on the main page without the copyedit. I'd been hoping someone from Guild of copyeditors would come along, as they're better at this than I am, but you removed the CE tag so I've gone ahead and done it myself this morning. The hook is in prep 3, which is due to hit the main page the 24th, I believe. --valereee (talk) 11:52, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi there Valereee, with apologies for what is a somewhat self-interested request, would you perhaps consider rethinking your decision to not place this hook in the picture slot? Herbert Maryon is a large article that I have been working on for several years, and for which—with hopes of it being used in the main slot—I tracked down a photograph from a family member. No worries, however, if this is not possible. Thanks, —Usernameunique (talk) 19:09, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Usernameunique, I have no objection to pulling it, but the quirky slot is a high-interest slot! There isn't an image slot available, though -- there's a bio image already in prep 4, and prep 5 is the only one that hasn't been filled. We've got five full preps, zero full queues right now. So I'd have to slot it into a random prep 5 bio slot and hope that we can put it into a later image slot. There could be pushback on that, as simple portraits aren't often considered inherently interesting. --valereee (talk) 19:32, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the fast response, Valereee. Would prep 6 be a possibility, now that it is (substantially) empty? If that doesn't work for some reason, however, no need to press the issue. Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 19:14, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
Usernameunique, good news! Yoninah already moved it to the image hook for prep 1! I had just gone to ask her if she had any objections and discovered she'd slotted it. She may have seen your request here. I love that hook; I think I may have heard that story at some point in the past, but it's delightful. I'll be interested to see what the page visits are like! --valereee (talk) 11:13, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
That’s great, thanks for doing that Yoninah (and Valereee)! Very much looking forward to it. Valereee, did you know of Maryon before reading the article? —Usernameunique (talk) 11:55, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Usernameunique, I don't think I recognized his name when I first saw the review, but the anecdote rang a bell! :) --valereee (talk) 12:15, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Usernameunique and Valereee, I did see the request here. I also thought it didn't work well as a quirky, and also that there was already an archaeologist hook in the set, so it was a natural for an image slot! Yoninah (talk) 12:34, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, why did you think it wasn't a good quirky? I'd thought it made a great candidate for that slot! What am I missing? --valereee (talk) 12:51, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks again for doing this, Yoninah and Valereee. Both fun and satisfying to see on the main page today. --Usernameunique (talk) 14:33, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

DYK for La Soupe

On 23 June 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article La Soupe, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that every week Cincinnati's La Soupe turns 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) of rescued food into 3,000 meals for people in need with the help of sixty local chef volunteers? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/La Soupe. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, La Soupe), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK for Line marker (sports)

On 24 June 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Line marker (sports), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that lines on sports fields were once marked by young children and are now marked by robots equipped with GPS? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Line marker (sports). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Line marker (sports)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Valereee,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
Thank you for going above and beyond to help me and other inexperienced editors. It is users like you (including specifically you) who made me feel welcome to stay and learn more instead of running, when I made mistakes (and still do) or got stuck with a problem in wikipedia. Usedtobecool ✉️  19:16, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, I've figured out how to give one of these. So, when I was pleasantly surprised by an RfA notification that refreshed my memory, I HAD to get back here and express my long-overdue appreciation. Good luck with the RfA. Usedtobecool ✉️  19:21, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Usedtobecool! That's very kind! --valereee (talk) 18:24, 1 July 2019 (UTC)

Robert E. Lee fact

Would you be so kind as to move that DYK back to the prep area?MagicatthemovieS (talk) 17:32, 27 June 2019 (UTC)MagicatthemovieS

MagicatthemovieS, it looks like there is still a question at the nomination, another editor has suggested a re-review? If I moved it back, someone else would just revert again. The nom is less than two weeks old; is there some reason we need to get this into a particular set? --valereee (talk) 17:40, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
The editor told me that he has no interest in a re-review If I have no interest in a re-review, and I don't. Would you be so kind as to add the nomination into a set?MagicatthemovieS (talk) 17:57, 27 June 2019 (UTC)MagicatthemovieS
MagicatthemovieS, the other editor said they didn't want to do a re-review and suggested you template the nom. You can ask them if they'll remove their question, but quite honestly the fact they had one (and the fact the reviewer literally didn't mention ANY of the DYK review criteria) would make me skip over the nom until I saw someone else had reviewed or I had time to review myself (which would then prevent me from moving to prep). I'll ask again: is there some reason we need to get this into a set now? The nom is one of the newer on the list and likely wouldn't normally be slotted for at least a couple of weeks unless there was a special occasion request or it was the only hook that could be fit into a set because of the other hooks that were already there. I'm sorry to not be able to do what you're asking. I can tell this is frustrating for you, and I hate that a DYK experience would be frustrating to a clearly well-intentioned editor. --valereee (talk) 18:21, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
Would you re-review the nomination so it can go on the homepage on my birthday?MagicatthemovieS (talk) 18:41, 27 June 2019 (UTC)MagicatthemovieS
MagicatthemovieS, did you see that I'd done the review? --valereee (talk) 12:48, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
@Valereee: Thanks for that. I don't know if or when I will expand the article.MagicatthemovieS (talk) 13:53, 2 July 2019 (UTC)MagicatthemovieS
MagicatthemovieS Okay, sorry! FWIW, if you take it to GA, it becomes automatically eligible for DYK -- no expansion needed -- as long as you submit within 7 days of being designated GA. --valereee (talk) 14:16, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
Would you like to review the GA nomination?MagicatthemovieS (talk) 15:22, 2 July 2019 (UTC)MagicatthemovieS
Did we already miss your birthday? I'd be extremely happy to review it on July 8th, when I'll have oodles of time. I might be able to get to it before then, but I have some things on my plate right now that are keeping my ADD brain very distracted, so unless there's still a time crunch? --valereee (talk) 16:37, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

welcome to the mop corps

Congratulations on your successful RFA!
It's your turn to hear what the puppy told me after my RFA passed –
twelve long, sordid, jeez-Katie-are-you-still-talking?-go-stick-a-handknit-sock-in-it years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable. I'd be shocked if you haven't done it already.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

If you haven't figured out how to find this ... on my computer, the link is under the Tools sidebar. Click on Page Information. — Maile (talk) 11:01, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Maile66, oh, yes, I knew it was there -- it's just that on pages with fewer than 30 watchers, it always just said 'fewer than 30 watchers.' Now it gives me the actual number, even if it's under 30. I hadn't realized that would be different. valereee (talk) 11:14, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, Liz! --valereee (talk) 16:52, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

What elephant?

Long, boring navel-gazing, I wouldn’t bother. TLDR version: I was very concerned about the timing, I made a judgment call, and I have no issue with those who think I made the wrong call. --valereee (talk) 16:58, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

An excellent piece of writing - I've no way of testing it, but I wonder whether the majority who didn't want the FRAM-aspects to generate more opposes felt that asking about it could be counterproductive and/or drag the RfA off-topic. Nosebagbear (talk) 17:06, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
This is just more evidence that you will be an excellent administrator. Thanks. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:23, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
I first asked Valereee about adminship on 25 March. I had planned to run a group of RfAs in July, and I told a bunch of people at the Manchester meetup that I would be doing so. All this happened before Framgate, and I assumed that most people would be sensible enough to realise the RfA was planned in advance and run as scheduled. In the event, the community does have enough sensible people on it to pick up on these things and ensure the RfA passed. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:58, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Cullen! And big thanks to you and MegaLibraryGirl, Ritchie! I appreciate the vote of confidence from both of you. --valereee (talk) 16:53, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Queue 6

Hi, I think your tweak needs a "that" added: thought her father's suggestion that she audition. Yoninah (talk) 17:11, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Yoninah, done! valereee (talk) 18:12, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. Please hold off on promoting any more sets for another day, okay? Two sets in the queue is plenty. I often swap hooks in the prep set area while building new sets. Yoninah (talk) 18:24, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
Sure thing! It took me all morning to do all the checks for prep 6. :D I agree two queued is plenty, and I'd ideally like to have two sets in queue as often as possible. --valereee (talk) 18:42, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

Somewhat ironic that the first message after a successful RfA is a comment on sadomasochism..... Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:59, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Ritchie333, hahahaha...yeah, that masochistic part for sure :) --valereee (talk) 16:48, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
It doesn't fit yours, though. My friends RexxS (probably remembered), Montanabw and PumpkinSky suffered more, and Montanabw because of me (my name in 21 times) which disturbed me. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:14, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, ugh, I'm sorry. That sounds hideous. It's quite the process. --valereee (talk) 23:17, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
If she ran again, do you think people would again look at one specific discussion, of 100k edits, and in that discussion only at her anger, but not what caused it? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:21, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
