Dear Valereee and Cwmhiraeth, we really need to space out the Russian cemetery hooks a lot more. We currently have 139 approved hooks, so we can afford to run them once a week (or more) rather than every few days. Hi, I wonder if I could ask you to stop placing these sexual-innuendo nature hooks in the quirky slot. Quirky means light, different, unusual, funny. Wow, never occurred to me that there was anything sexual about this, as it's a pea crab and a slipper limpet. I assume they can't reproduce together. I just thought it was a quirky bit of interesting nature lore. The fact the pea crab's lifecycle involves something that affects its host's ability to reproduce doesn't seem remotely sexual or sexually deviant to me; it's just "Wow, no, I didn't know that! How interesting!" If someone is asking us not to put this kind of hook into the quirky slot -- for no reason other than the fact someone might think of it as remotely sexual -- I'd want to argue with them about it. That just seems kind of...well, I hate to use the word silly, but it certainly seems hypersensitive to anything that could be remotely called sexual. --valereee (talk) 22:12, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Well, you promoted a hook with a similarly raunchy angle only 4 sets before (now in Queue 1). We see stuff like this in the April Fools set; I personally would never highlight it by putting it in the quirky slot.

I'd also like to mention that you should feel free to edit hooks after you promote them. Often the nominator isn't familiar with DYK style of putting the target article in the front of the hook, or there are too many blue links. It doesn't help that many of these hooks are reviewed by editors who know even less than the nominator. Here is an example of fixing hooks after promotion. Thanks, I've been wondering about how much editing I can do, and I've been reluctant to do it without pinging nom and reviewer to the talk page. I'm building this set today with the intention of spending tomorrow morning doing a re-review of each of the hooks. Not sure that's the most efficient way to do it, but trawling through the approved noms over and over didn't seem efficient either, so I'm giving this a try. Advice appreciated.

Re: Calma glaucoides. There is nothing inherently sexual or even raunchy about an anus. It's how an organism removes food waste from its body. This an organism that doesn't require what most people would think was an essential organ for any organism bigger than a cluster of cells. To me this seems inherently quirky, just as it would if it didn't need a means of taking nutrients in. I'm sorry, I just don't see this as in any way raunchy. It's just interesting. I'm totally not trying to be obtuse; if there is past discussion of this that can make it clear to me, I want to go through it. No, I don't think there is previous discussion about it. I'm just hypersensitive about running language like this in the quirky slot.

And in general, I don't put nature hooks in the quirky slot unless they are really exceptional. If they're good hooks, they run in the middle of the set. If they have a good hook and a good image, they go to the image slot.

Just wanted to say that this hook promotion is a classic example of what I answered you on my talk page, about why it takes so long to build a prep set. The hook you promoted with the image is not that good. The hook you suggest is better. In such a case, I would have continued the discussion on the nomination page before promoting anything. After I worked out with the nominator what exactly can be promoted (the good hook or the bad hook), I would promote accordingly (yes image slot or no image slot). Because now, if the answer to your query is negative at WT:DYK, you're going to move the weak hook out of the image slot and risk hurting the nominator's feelings after they've seen it there.

Take your time building sets. You can stop at the end of the day and continue the next, and nothing will happen to them. And if someone (me, Cwmhiraeth) does add a hook you didn't plan on including, just move it to the next set and put in the one you want. The main thing is that the hooks you promote shouldn't be subject to question by other editors. Yoninah (talk) 11:22, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

For a minute there I was thinking, "Why did I promote that...?" because I've actually been trying to do what you suggested for the past few days -- asking questions at the nom review while I'm looking for a hook, then moving on to the next nom as I look for the next hook. I've even started trying to remember to start my questions with, "Came here to promote, but I've got a question..." as I've seen you doing and which seems to me is more likely to get someone's attention than a question from what looks like a random drive-by crank. And I guess the other thing I could have done, and maybe it would be more productive, was move that hook to a later prep so that a promoter who actually likes the hook could work with it. Hello Valereee , I'm not sure if this is the place to ask or if requesting a specific user is allowed, but you've been so helpful and communicative that I thought I'd try. I have more information to add to my article, 1963 Freedom Ballot, but I feel I could improve the flow of what I already have before adding to it. I also wanted to know what to do if I can't find a non-licensed image. Most images I've found belong to a Matt Herron and The Image Works. Is it fine to leave out an image if there are none? MalachiReschke, hi! This is a fine place to ask for help. You can work on the article in any way that makes sense to you. Improve the flow first, add more information first, it's up to each editor to decide how exactly to do their work. If you want to put it up for DYK, though, that has to be done within seven days of the date it was moved to main space, so that would be this coming Sunday. The article does NOT have to be perfect by then; it just needs to fulfill DYK requirements, with which I'm very familiar, and it likely already does fulfill requirements.

Articles don't have to have images; many don't, usually because there's no free-use image available. You can use a non-free image for some articles in some situations, but it's very limited. There's information at Wikipedia:Image use policy.

Hm, looks like Herron makes his photos free for educators in an effort to improve understanding of the civil rights movement, so it's possible he'd be willing to donate one to Wikipedia for this article. You can always ask. It's probably a long shot, but I've gotten multiple photos uploaded just by asking. His contact page is here. If you want to approach him, explain that you're a volunteer working on civil rights articles for Wikipedia, give him a link to the article (I always tell people that if they understandably are reluctant to click on a link sent by a stranger, they can google the article; almost all WP articles come up on the first page of a search of their title), that WP isn't allowed to use purchased photos because of our licensing, and that uploading is fast, free, and easy, though he would have to register at Commons, but that's fast, free and easy, too. You might actually want to upload some of your own photos yourself first at Wikimedia Commons so you can be familiar with the process here and then click on "Upload file" on the left side of the page. --valereee (talk) 11:33, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi, in reference to your recent posts on hook wording in Prep 1 and Prep 4, I'd like to ask you to consider a standard format for a posting. Name the article in question in the subhead, provide the current hook for easy reference, and then ping the nominator, reviewer, and promoter. It appears that in that long discussion about the crab in Macau, the nominator was never pinged to participate; the nominators in the prep 1 just found there way here, also without a ping. Here is an example:

Prep 4:Crab in Macau

• ... that researchers discovered a new species of freshwater crab, genus Nanhaipotamon, in Macau, one of the most densely-populated regions on Earth?

With so many people living in Macau and the city being a prime tourist destination, one would assume that researchers or citizens would have discovered the new species just by chance a long time ago. That it happened only last year shows how there are still lots of things to explore and discover where we least expect them and that many people do not really care for their immideate environment.

When building prep sets I like to concentrate on the oldest nominations. Just now, in the top third of the approved nominations page there is an accumulation of hooks that I have reviewed and approved but cannot thus promote. Cwmhiraeth, thanks! I've been starting at the top and going down. I usually do all the bios first, or all the non-bios, then start back through. (Advice welcome and appreciated!) I do always watch to see if you or Yoninah have nominated or approved a particular hook; for one thing, I know that any hook and/or article you two have created or passed is likely to be in very good shape! I usually skip over because the set already has an X hook, or already has too many Y hooks, or because even though it's been promoted, there's still discussion going on. That's fine. It's just that I don't mind doing some extra reviews to whittle away at the backlog, but I don't like doing that if it means the approved nominations will have to wait longer than they otherwise would. Hey, The C of E! That source is using the term 'illegal' in the way journalists often do, but they're using it sloppily. From our article on gay marriage in NI, it looks like sources are saying it's not legally recognized, which isn't the same as illegal. I moved the DYK because the prep was second in line to be queued, all queues were empty, the article needed a copyedit, and I was getting in the car for an all-day drive, so I knew I wasn't going to be able to get to it myself yesterday and didn't want it to be sent to queue and possibly end up on the main page without the copyedit. I'd been hoping someone from Guild of copyeditors would come along, as they're better at this than I am, but you removed the CE tag so I've gone ahead and done it myself this morning. Usernameunique, I have no objection to pulling it, but the quirky slot is a high-interest slot! There isn't an image slot available, though -- there's a bio image already in prep 4, and prep 5 is the only one that hasn't been filled. We've got five full preps, zero full queues right now. So I'd have to slot it into a random prep 5 bio slot and hope that we can put it into a later image slot. There could be pushback on that, as simple portraits aren't often considered inherently interesting. --valereee (talk) 19:32, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

MagicatthemovieS, the other editor said they didn't want to do a re-review and suggested you template the nom. You can ask them if they'll remove their question, but quite honestly the fact they had one (and the fact the reviewer literally didn't mention ANY of the DYK review criteria) would make me skip over the nom until I saw someone else had reviewed or I had time to review myself (which would then prevent me from moving to prep). I'll ask again: is there some reason we need to get this into a set now? The nom is one of the newer on the list and likely wouldn't normally be slotted for at least a couple of weeks unless there was a special occasion request or it was the only hook that could be fit into a set because of the other hooks that were already there. I'm sorry to not be able to do what you're asking. I first asked Valereee about adminship on 25 March. I had planned to run a group of RfAs in July, and I told a bunch of people at the Manchester meetup that I would be doing so. All this happened before Framgate, and I assumed that most people would be sensible enough to realise the RfA was planned in advance and run as scheduled.
