Hey, this is where you can ask me questions if you want. If you have questions about Wikipedia itself, your best bet might be the Teahouse, but otherwise, just click 'New Section', sign your name with those quadruple tildes ('~~~~'), and I'll get back to you when I can. It helps if you ping me. If you don't know how to do this, just copy and paste {{ping|TheTechnician27}}, {{re|TheTechnician27}}, or {{u|TheTechnician27}} before your message.

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello TheTechnician27,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Reminders:

  • You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
  • Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

Re: Big Boss

While I do agree an AfD is a better route there, one person can, in fact, decide to merge an article. It's covered under WP:BLAR and its encouraged in the event someone feels being bold is necessary. You can still disagree and counter but your approach was a bit heavy handed. Kung Fu Man (talk) 01:01, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:BLAR links the following WP:BLANK: "Under normal circumstances, Wikipedia articles should not be blanked. If you think an article has no useful content, then either fix it, or else leave it in its present state and propose it for deletion. However, it is acceptable to blank an article for libel or privacy reasons as an emergency measure, as described in the policy on biographies of living persons. It is also sometimes necessary to blank an article which is a copyright violation in its entirety – for instructions, see Copyright problems." Maybe Big Boss is a real person and we were being too libelous about his ideology? What Pickle did was almost comically ridiculous and completely out of line, treating Wikipedia like their own little fiefdom. This article has absolutely no reason to be blanked outside of a decision made at an AfD – absolutely, categorically none. 3500 contributions made over 20 years about a clearly notable subject within a well-cited, reasonably well-structured article with seemingly no instances of copyvio (let alone ones so systemic it would warrant a blank). My approach was not heavy-handed; Pickle was subverting the AfD process using this backdoor approach with the full knowledge that their nonsense would absolutely not fly there. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 01:17, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PS: They didn't "merge" anything; they turned the article into a redirect and then left everything in the 'Characters' article as it was. That's not a merge; that's a closet deletion. So even if this argument for their actions did somehow hold up to scrutiny, it doesn't accurately describe what they did. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 01:28, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging pages for speedy deletion

Hello, TheTechnician27,

None of the redirects you tagged were eligible for CSD R3. The tag specifically says This criterion does not apply to redirects created as a result of a page move, unless the moved page was also recently created. See CSD R3. which was the case with all of these redirects. CSD R3 is generally for redirects that are created that are not the result of an article page move but just as a straight redirect. All I can advise is that you can take all of these to WP:RFD if you would like to see them deleted, I think you'll find agreement there. And be more careful with the article page moves so these mistakes don't happen. Happy editing. Liz Read! Talk! 05:33, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I really appreciate it, Liz. I was reading WoRMS while trying to get Decapoda articles up-to-date, and some wires got seriously crossed. Maybe I need some sleep. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 05:39, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
