Clifters

Hi there. I just closed the AfD on this, but it is still a copyvio since it is overwhelmingly the same text as on their website. I've listed it at WP:CP as a result: if you should rewrite the article, please do so on Clifters/Temp, and indicate that on Talk:Clifters. Regarding the "List of high value detainees" article

First off, it was a bad choice of name. The article needs a better name. The term was coined by US officials, and picked up by the press. Prior to starting the article I had only seen it used to refer to the most senior al Qaeda captives. But, googling for it showed me US officials had also used the term to refer to Saddam's most senior cadre. My mistake.

I have responded, at length, on the deletion page. I thought I would respond on your talk page, and ask you, would you have any other concerns if the consensus was to change the title of the article? If not, I am drawing a blank on better titles, although I now see the current title has to go. Is any better title occurring to you? Thanks. -- Geo Swan 18:06, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

Right then.

  1. Josephine's fears are quite a major factor in the books too. They are what inhibit the Baudelaires whilst they are there. Can you imagine a life without hot food? She does things like leaves piles of cans around to stop burglars.
  2. She doesn't have lifejackets floating around. Towards the end of the books, she is pushed into the lake by Olaf and supposedly she gets mauled (because of her eating a banana only half an hour beforehand) and the lifejackets are all that's left. But, the Queequeg submarine may have been in the lake at the same time therefore some fans believe that she may have been rescued.
  3. Sir is the owner of the Luckly Smells Lumbermill, to where the Baudelaires have to work in book the fourth: The Miserable Mill. In the end, he fires the Baudelaires because they are too much trouble. He is one of the few Guardians not killed by Olaf because the only reason Olaf kills any of them is it get to the Baudelaires.

Well, it might be a bit spoilt by me telling you all of these details (and you reading them in the articles) but they are very entertaining. And with V.F.D. thrown in, they get quite deep towards the end of the series (although I was quite disappointed by The Penultimate Peril). --Celestianpower háblame 09:39, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Talk: Multitrack recording

"These days, digital recording has improved tremendously, and since most classical music's going to end up on CD anyway, there's not much reason not to digitally multitrack it."

Technologically, yes, but many musicans, music groups and orchestras in the following genres cosider it more sophisticated to record "direct to master":

  • Concert Music
  • Jazz
  • Certain folk genres (I been wondering for a while how Leonard Cohen's studio albums have been recorded)
  • Latin, I remeber watching a documentry about the Buna Vista Social Club on *SBS television (I live in North Calrton, a suburb in Melbourne, Australia) and being rather suprised, when seeing studio recording sessions, by the the whole group performing together in the studio without any multitrack recording.

"So, there are probably still some snobs recording orchestras through a single microphone directly onto gramophone record in the misguided belief that this somehow produces better results than CDs recorded with state of the art digital multitracking equipment."

They prefrence is not due to a musiguaded belief, it is just a sophisticated personal taste. They are not snobs! Furthermore digital recording is inherently lossy, in comparsion to the very best analog recordings.

"Bloody Luddites."

This is a powerful insult to many classical musicians (even ones that do not reconrd this way) as well as classical producers and recording engineers that work with them, and many classical composers and fans. If you continue to use such insults on Wikipedia articles, including discussion forums, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Highly inappropriate.

You're a frequent contributor to the Maine Coon page. What are your thoughts on the picture issue. I think there should just be three and I have voted my top three picks. It's a unique enough cat with alot of diffrent markings and features that I think a few pictures are appropriate, but it seems to be getting out of hand. Your edit[1] took the page back to 13:50 on November 11th[2], that's over four days worth of input. It was also a whole page edit, not a section edit. It happened at a time when the servers were heavily loaded, so, given the time and number of attempts for edits to take, I was concentrating on rolling back the change, so the edit comment didn't take account of your edit history, but did take account of the major disruption to the page.
When I did look at your edit history, my first interpretation of a more recent edit was that that was vandalism as well, although that was in error as the nature of the content meant that the sort of phrases that might be substituted by vandals was normal in the context. Howeever, by then, I had already written the first version of the message, based on what I had assumed to be later vandalism, and was struggling trying to get the server not to timeout on the reinstatement of the edit after yours (and also not to waste too much work time). I did realise that mistake and changed the message to use the definitely disrupted page.
The actual message is the boiler plate second level warning (of four levels). I didn't start with the first level warning because your edit history didn't look like that of someone who had just discovered that they could change pages. My impression is that real vandals often get away with it for a long time because people don't put up the warning notices, so it cannot be escalated to adminstrator level.

WarGames

What is it you don't understand? /user/games/wargames is a shell script included with BSD systems which will ask you what you want to play and start the game if it exists or say the quote if it doesn't, how hard is that to understand from what is already given? What alternative wording do you believe would better convey this? Just deleting stuff you don't get is counter productive. "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play" is the key quote in the film, what in the world do you mean "the relevance of the quote is not clear." Janizary 06:05, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

abo-teni articles

I was looking around on wikipedia and found that you'd also found the Abo-Teni article suspicious. Further poking around on google yielded tiberius lowang's xanga, which appears to be a diary by someone who's created the (I'm now convinced) completely fictional Tiberius Lowang article, and most likely some of the other linked articles.

Thanks for that - I noticed the cleanup you've done as well! The Coombe is famous in Dublin folklore as one of the three maternity hospitals of the city. It's central to a very vibrant inner-city district. A stub would definitely be worthwhile - I'll try to find some time, but have some work on arrondissements to finish first. Dlyons493 Talk

I agree with you, but I don´t think that Yok-sha puddin´, Tripe and Yok-sha hotpot should go. They´re integral to food in Yorkshire.

Hallo MadBaron, I saw you did some editing on pizza delivery. I think the article is very American Centric. Therefore, I have added some aspects on pizza deliverym in European countries. I saw you have a Thai background. That is the reason why I am asking this question. Do you know somethin about pizza delivery in Asian Countries? Transliteration of Thai names

I agree that articles on Thai people should note their preferred spelling, the IPA pronunciation, the Royal Institute transliteration, and preferably even an audio file of the pronunciation. However, I do not agree that each article deserves a separate section on transliteration. It would be much preferable to include links to each of those systems, like the way I modified the introduction of the Bhumibol Adulyadej article. Detailed discussions of the pros and cons of each system should be covered in the articles on those systems. Patiwat 23:09, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

The Hostile Hospital

Thanks. The phrase "Torch Up Murder" does not appear anywhere in any of the books. I left it in until I could determine how Rupert Murdoch was related to the series. Who the blazes is Allan Gray?

The mention of Allan Gray as the composer of the music for Forty-Ninth Parallel is what is known as, to use the technical jargon, a mistake :) Probably made by copying the info box from other films by The Archers and not editing it properly. Thanks for noticing it. Allan Gray was the composer for quite a few of the other films of The Archers (Powell & Pressburger) from The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp through to A Matter of Life and Death. But he's got nothing to do with that South African bank so I've modified the links on the other films. The article on the bank is fairly new and that picked up the links to the composer which didn't go anywhere - waiting for an article to be written about him -- SteveCrook 14:13, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

The Hurricane (1999 film)

I would add a section on Critical reaction and Box office as sub-topics of Reception (Awards should be a sub of it too). I would also add a section about the movie's production entitled Production (kinda obvious). That section may include information such as development of the script, casting changes, etc... The Storyline section could be expanded (and entitled Plot if it is expanded). The Controversy section should be totally converted to prose and Trivia should be moved to other sections, such as Produciton. Images could be added to help illustrate the plot or production (cast shots, books it was based on, images of filming...). Anything else I can help you with? Cbrown1023 21:19, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
