On "either ... or"

Hello Takuya,

after you reverted twice my deletion of "either" in the statement of Krull's intersection theorem, I write you a few words here:

The English language is not completely accurate when it comes to the use of the word "or". It can mean both inclusive and exclusive or. With "either" it generally speaking means exclusive or, but even there are exceptions, in particular with negation.

But in English as used by mathematicians, the convention is completely clear: "or" means inclusive or and "either ... or" means exclusive or.

In the situation here, inclusive or is correct, so "either" should be deleted.

To say it specifically, the phrase "a proper ideal I in a commutative Noetherian ring that is either a local ring or an integral domain" excludes the case that the ring local and an integral domain. Claus aus Leipzig (talk) 08:21, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"the convention is completely clear". I don’t think this is true. For example, one often says "assume either of the following assumptions is true: ...". This does not exclude the possibility more one than one assumption is valid. See for example local criterion for flatness. In fact, in logic, when you say A or B is true, it does not imply it is invalid that both A and B are true. —- Taku (talk) 08:31, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The last sentence of your reply is clearly valid. As said, in logic (and in mathematics) "or" means inclusive or, that is, it corresponds to the operator OR in programming languages. Please note that this is the form of sentence present in the article after deleting "either".
Unfortunately, the word "either" has a range of meanings depending on the context, for example there is the phrase "either way" which means "in any case". The phrase you mentioned goes in this direction.
Nonetheless, in mathematics and logic "either .. or" simply means exclusive or, abbreviated by XOR.
According to dictionaries, this is also the case outside of mathematics and logic. In every-day language "either - or" often used in situations involving a choice between two alternatives. Have a look here: [1] or here: [2]
Finally, on your example of the article local criterion for flatness: This is just badly written here in Wikipedia. When one follows the reference, one finds this in Matsumura's book: "In the above notation, suppose that one of the two following conditions is satisfied: ..."
Claus aus Leipzig (talk) 14:06, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we need a Wikipedia article to tell us what usage is correct :) I did a bit of Googling and I found the following [3]. It includes the example "If x is a real number, then either x≤0 or x≥0". Here the statement does not exclude the possibility x = 0. So, I don’t think your usage is universally followed; maybe some do follow it but I don’t think it is necessary common in mathematics. —- Taku (talk) 05:52, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just added a corresponding section in the talk page of the article Exclusive or; see On the expression "either_– or" in mathematical texts. It has been an interesting discussion already, let's see what comes out of my request there. Claus aus Leipzig (talk) 17:17, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Connes connection moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Connes connection, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 10:30, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I assume the above is a template. So, for example, the interview bit isn’t relevant here. Note that what types of sources are needed really depends on types of article. For math articles, the references in the article seem enough; for instance, the notability is quite clear in this case. —- Taku (talk) 10:44, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
